A/N: And so, we have reached the end of Arc IV. A bit shorter than Arc II, but MK II was arguably the game with the most plot movement of the original trilogy, so that made sense. I have many things I want to say but will wait until afterward. Enjoy the dissection of Shao Kahn's character and the man himself.

40th Street Cathedral Rooftop, Manhattan; 4:00 PM: Day 2 of the Invasion
Callie's POV:
Seeing the mighty Shao Kahn restrained like a punished dog is something I never thought I'd be seeing in my lifetime. But here he is, and everyone who he's tortured in some way is bearing witness to this.
I guess we should rewind the clock to reveal how the grand idiot found himself in this situation.
Fifteen minutes earlier:
After Xan had woken up and was comforted by Mom and Mileena, we quickly came to think of the next step of our plan. Rain was dead as Xan killed him with the Black Star. Sindel and Mileena became turncoats on Earthrealm's behalf, and most of Shao Kahn's court was either killed or crippled. Xan and Kim wounded Shang Tsung, Ko'atal was beaten up by Detective Koga and Benji while Shana killed Baraka. From what Benji reported, Kim left a gaping chest wound on Tanya and nearly killed Reptile. The only person left was the one heading the invasion force in Manhattan, but we don't who that is. For all we know, he or she could've fled to Outworld when they got word that Sindel and Mileena betrayed Shao Kahn.
All that's left to do now is push Outworld's forces back to where they either retreat or run out of numbers and support. Both are possible now, with most of Shao Kahn's pillars either dead or crippled. A return to the field would be ill-advised.
Now that we're rested and fresh, we can finish off the rest if they show. Everyone's so convinced that the war is won that Johnny went back to Hollywood. I planned on sending Jax, Kenshi, and Cyrax back to Special Forces with some of the remnants of the Cyber Lin Kuei. With them, we can possibly find Sub-Zero and perhaps help get rid of the rest. Hopefully he's alright. Benji said he was one of the few alongside Cyrax to oppose the Cyber Initiative and has been on the run since he beat Scorpion in Outworld.
"Sergeant," Sonya called for me as we began cleaning the place. "A word before I go."
"What is it, Sonya?"
"Thanks for giving me a second chance."
"Sure. I realize that I've been too harsh on you when we were in Outworld. Even though you lied to Sergeant Michaels on Jax's mental condition, you both proved yourselves out here. So good work, soldier."
She saluted me. "Thank you, Sergeant."
"Drop the ranks, Sonya. I told you when I retired to call me by my name."
"I know. But my calling you by your title is for respect. It's the only way I know to show it since I don't answer to you."
"Very by the book, Sonya. You need to loosen up a little. I'll appeal to Sarge about giving you some time off. He told me about how you've been working yourself to the bone at HQ." I lowered my voice to a whisper so no one else could hear us. "Is there somethin' going on? You usually pace yourself perfectly."
Sonya looked around the Cathedral to make sure no one else was eavesdropping. "It's... Cage."
"Johnny? He isn't here right now."
"I know he isn't, but... He's been hitting my line with constant flirting, asking me out to dates and the like. At first, I brushed them off, but now-"
"You're having second thoughts?" I finished.
She nodded. "Yeah. It hasn't hampered my job, but it's starting to get ridiculous."
"Then humor him. Call Johnny out, be the dominant woman I know you to be, Sonya. Test him and see what he does. I'm certain he'll give you his true self. And if you don't like what happens, move on. Simple."
"But what if I do enjoy myself?"
I gave a light laugh. "That's the whole idea, Sonya. Fallin' for someone isn't the end of the world, y'know. I juggle my relationship with Red and Lao despite being Drill Sergeant."
While being the Messenger and a primary catalyst for why an entire realm of reality may be restored. But details.
"Take him up for it as it's better than to let it run your thoughts." I patted her back twice. "You heading back to HQ?"
"Yes, I'm assuming you're staying here for now?"
"Yep, gotta make sure we get rid of Cow Face's cronies for good. But don't worry about me, Sonya. We both know that I can defend myself, and we have almost everyone else here to not be defenseless."
"Okay, Sergeant." Sonya saluted me one last time. "I will see you back at HQ."
I returned the salute. "Yes, General. Dismissed."
She then left the Cathedral. Johnny's caught her eye, huh? Can't say I saw that coming. I walked up to Xan, who sat down with a lit cigarette in hand, Shana next to him.
"Xan, walk with me, will ya?"
"Sure, Sergeant." He accepted and whispered for Shana to follow him. "What is it you want to talk about?"
"First off, I want to say thanks for helping us out here in New York. You were key in a lot of the positives out here. I see how you stopped a prophetic Catastrophe with skills like those."
Xan nodded. "Thank you, Sergeant. We all did our part. Singling me out for exemplary work isn't fair to everyone else."
"Well said. Mom told me of what happened between you and your patron deities. You'll be jobless for the first time in centuries, yes?"
"I'm afraid so. A reward and apology for them taking control of my life, so they said. This will be the first time in forever that I'll be living peacefully. What that means to me, I don't really know."
"Well, if you ever need a place to work, you can always work with my group. We're off the record, but you'd fit right in with us," I offered. "In fact, I might have the perfect job we can discuss later if you decide to join us. Think about it."
"I will, Sergeant. Thank you for the opportunity," Xan said as we walked throughout the Cathedral halls. "What are we going to do about the invasion? Things are starting to wind down, but until we stop Shao Kahn directly, it's not really over."
He had a good point.
"That's what I'm trying to figure out. Have any ideas?"
"Ever tried luring him out here for a personal confrontation?"
"Why would we do that? That's the opposite of what we want."
"Really? I imagine that if he sets foot on Earth without a justified reason, then someone has to intervene. Who else is going to show in his stead with everyone else out of commission or dead? It's not unlikely Shao Kahn will continue to sit on his butt while his plans continue to fall apart. He'll make the rash decision to invade personally at some point."
I then understood what Xan meant. "And he can't do that since he hasn't won the Mortal Kombat Tournament. You're correct, Xan. How are we gonna bait him to come here?"
"You lost me there. Nightwolf, Sindel, Ermac, and Mileena may have a good idea on how to do so."
"You're right. Let's discuss this with everyone else."
We gathered everyone who's still here, and I relayed what I just learned.
"That's some plan, dear. If we can coerce Shao Kahn to come to Earthrealm himself, he'll be done for. It's just a matter of reeling him in."
"Nightwolf, do you know of any incantations of the like?" I asked the Shaman.
"I do, Panthera. However, without a source, there's no guarantee it'll work."
"What do we need, Nightwolf?"
"Anything that Shao Kahn can recognize would be good enough."
Sindel turned to Mileena. "Milly, did you get rid of your old clothes?"
She shook her head. "No, Mother. It's still in the room where Mommy made my new outfit."
"Will that work?"
"It will do. We will place the seal that'll summon Shao Kahn on the rooftop. Edgemaster, if you are free, I request your aid in marking it."
"Of course, Nightwolf. Lead the way."
They both headed to the rooftop.
"Mileena, find your old clothes and give them to Xan, so he doesn't have to go through the trouble of finding you after they're done."
"Yes, Sergeant."
She went off to find her old outfit, the plan set into motion, finally.
"Hopefully, after this, we can all go home," I said to everyone.
I meant that regardless of the land of origin, whether it be here in Earthrealm or Edenia. It's good for me because I can travel anywhere I want. They all nodded, thinking similarly.
"I'm already missing Suchin, so hopefully we can do this quickly," Kenshi remarked.
"Nothing is keeping you all here. I dismissed you all already. Go to your wife, Kenshi. Isn't she pregnant?"
"She is."
"We agree with Sergeant Maddox, friend. Go and comfort your wife, Takahashi Kenshi. We will help the Sergeant finish things here." Ermac added.
"Good work, Kenshi. But you should go."
"Thank you, Callie. I will meet with you later," Kenshi replied as he left the Cathedral.
"Well, if we're dismissed, I'm gonna head out too. I plan on taking a long nap with my girl when I get back home."
"You're seeing someone, Jax?"
"Yeah, Sarge. Vera's her name, and she's sweet to me."
"Then go to her. She'll be happy to see you. I'll run down everything that happened when I next see you, Jax. Dismissed."
He saluted me before leaving.
"I take it I'm free to go?" Cyrax asked.
"Yeah, Cyrax. A shame that Sektor wasn't here. Take some of the Cyber Lin Kuei remnants and scan them for the whereabouts of any others. Or Sub-Zero."
"Yes, Sergeant."
Cyrax took the troupe leader's head before exiting. That left me, Mom, Red, Ilah, Ermac, Mileena, Sindel, Shana, Nightwolf, and Xan.
"I'm going to check on the boys upstairs. I'll be back soon." I told the group.
"Okay, dear. Be careful," Mom said as I head up to the roof.
Nightwolf and Xan were hard at work, and it seemed like the marks were almost drawn.
"How much longer until it's finished?" I inquired.
"Not much longer, Panthera. We are placing the finishing touches. Edgemaster has made the process much quicker."
"Please, Nightwolf. Just Xan will do."
Within a few minutes, the marking was complete. "Done. All we need now is the source, and we can effectively cast it."
Mileena came onto the rooftop. "I have my old clothes here." She handed Xan her clothes before pecking his cheek. "Here, lover."
"Thank you, Mileena."
Xan placed them in the middle of the floor markings. "Gather the rest. In case this doesn't work, and no one intercepts, we'll need all hands on deck."
"Got it. I'll be right back," I said before running down to the lower levels.
I had just reached the door before hearing a loud noise.
*BOOM*
They couldn't have cast the incantation already. Unless... Oh no.
"EVERYONE ON THE ROOFTOP NOW!" I yelled at everyone there as I rushed back upstairs.
I made it outside with everyone else following me shortly after. The sky darkened with the incantations glowing. Mileena's old clothes were immolated with black fire, meaning Xan set them ablaze to leave the facade that his former daughter was in danger. Pretty damn smart on his part.
The ground started to shake violently as a green portal appeared... and out he came.
Shao Kahn.
Outworld's warlord marched out like he won this whole exchange, War Hammer in hand. We all prepped ourselves for the fight of our lives. Like we were going chat this one-eyed bastard up. But before anyone could speak, the portal behind him turned from green to indigo, chains appearing to bound the Emperor from behind as his War Hammer dropped to the ground.
"Phenomenal job, everyone! Now it's our time to shine. Right, Okada?"
"Yes, my Lord."
Out came Duffeck and Okada.
"Duffeck?"
"Okada?" Mai responded in tandem.
"Messenger, Mrs. Maddox. A pleasure to finally meet you. Okada has told me a lot about the White Swan of Edenia. You're quite the legend in the Netherrealm."
"Who in the hell are you!?" Shao Kahn bellowed.
"Watch your tone when addressing an Elder God, Shao Kahn. If you must know, I am Duffeck, Emperor of the Netherrealm." He slammed his cane head against the tyrant's face. "Messenger, I suggest you gather your friends. This momentous occasion is a must-see."
He didn't have to tell me twice. "Xan, Nightwolf, let's go."
I opened a portal to the Trainer's Estate and was immediately joined by Dakini, Kim, and Sareena. Jade revealed herself after we arrived.
"Where's Benji?" I asked them all.
"At the Wu-Shi Academy," Sareena answered. "Why, what's wrong?"
"Nothing. Things are starting to look up. I was requested by an ally to bring everyone to Manhattan. But if Benji's at the Wu-Shi, someone has to go get him."
"I... will go," a shy, tired-sounding voice volunteered.
We all glanced around the room for the owner of that voice. "On... the table, in the kitchen."
Looking in that direction, we saw Everest, almost fully grown, speaking. "I... will get the Master. I'll be back... shortly."
She flew in the direction of the Wu-Shi. I'm sure no one was expecting that at all. But at least someone's getting him. Hopefully Benji brings Liu Kang, Lao, and Kitty.
"Cal? What's going on?"
I faced him with a victorious smirk.
"Oh, it must be good news if you're smirking like that."
"Boy, is it. But it's better to show than tell. Come on, you all have to see this."
I opened a portal to Manhattan, and we all reached the other side.
Okada and Duffeck both smiled at us all.
"We're happy you all could make it. We're about to bear witness to Earthrealm's permanent liberation, and it would be a shame for anyone to miss this momentous occasion," Duffeck turned back to face Shao Kahn. "Isn't that right, Konqueror?"
Present:
And that's how we ended up here. That's good; a physical battle with Shao Kahn is miles harder than a mental one. Good thing Duffeck and Uncle intervened on our behalf.
But what were they doing here? They're deities of the NetherRealm, not Earthrealm.
"Care to explain why you're even here, Duffeck?" I asked the Elder God.
"Yes, why are we here? A good question indeed, Callie Ann. And you are deserving of an answer," Duffeck revealed. "Each Elder God is given a task that must be done. If they cannot perform, then the duty falls to the others. And since the other Elder Gods are borderline incompetent at this time, their work all falls to me in tandem with my normal duties. Which means it's up to Okada and I to establish the justice of wrongdoings in the realms."
"The Elder Gods have a Justice System?"
"Correct. The task fell to Argus to report them to me since I am the Executioner of the punishments. But since he is corrupt, I had to do his job for millennia. That explains why we are here."
"B-but the Elder Gods cannot interfere in mortal matters," Shao Kahn managed to get out.
"Who gave you permission to speak?" Duffeck coldly inquired as he slammed his cane against the Emperor once more with so much force that he broke the binds that kept him in place as he crashed on the floor. "Tch. Okada, stand him back up. If he talks out of turn again, gouge his other eye out."
"Yes, milord," Okada complied instantly as the chains captured Shao Kahn again and held him tighter.
"Where was I? Ah, yes. I am here to do my job. We always intended to help Earthrealm, as Benjamin can attest. However, since we're deities from another realm, we couldn't help directly."
"Which is why we sent Ilah in our place. She's not of the Netherrealm as she lives there with me. By all terms of the record, Ilah's still an Edenian since she never died, only having her soul trapped."
"Correct. While Ilah was helping you directly on our behalf, we scoured the Netherrealm libraries for information that might aid you. We have found some pertinent information regarding Shao Kahn and his race. Have any of you heard of the Konquerors?"
Duffeck's question prompted us all to shake our heads. Besides a few mentions here and there, we've never heard of them.
"That makes sense. Since the Elder Gods agreed to a 4/6 majority rule to exterminate them all millennials ago. Argus and Orion, the Elder Gods of Edenia and Outworld, respectively, were the two who were against the notion. From then on, the rest of us knew they were plotting something behind our backs, though we did not know the details. We made a guess as to why when we researched the Konquerors," Okada continued.
"What was it?"
"The entire race of Konquerors were composed of the remnants of the One Being's consciousness. Hence why they're all obsessed with merging the realms together and why we mass-murdered them all. All except Shao Kahn, who is the last remaining Konqueror. The One Being's influence is mighty, and those under it are unaware."
"Impossible... I became Outworld's ruler because I am deserving of ruling all of creation. It is my divine right," Shao Kahn countered. "You speak lies, Elder God."
"That is a possibility. Without proof, we are swinging in the dark. But while working to find the truth, we caught wind of a married couple who have taken to call themselves the World's Greatest Detectives. Koga and Ana. I believe Benjamin and his family have met them before."
"We have. Koga did say he had to report his findings to you."
"Yes, on the Red Dragon. I then sent him to Outworld to find evidence of Shao Kahn's influence under the One Being," Duffeck explained further before revealing a thick journal. "And he found this."
"That's Shao Kahn's journal! It was through it that I knew of the Red Dragon in Earthrealm! I stole the texts from there and fed it to AOI," Benji answered.
"Precisely. Koga took the whole thing and gave it to us, not the only hidden texts hiding what the tyrant wrote. The essence of that journal was eerily similar to that of the One Being. This evidence was enough for us to intervene. As the invasion commenced, Shao Kahn plunged himself deeper into the doghouse. We failed to find out why he didn't notice that he was screwed the moment he set foot in Earthrealm, successful invasion or not. We then figured out from past events what Argus and Orion were planning," Duffeck answered.
"Lord Duffeck had mentioned to you, Callie, that Argus and Orion had tried to have him killed so they could co-run the Netherrealm. It also brought forth the decision for Mortal Kombat to be used to prevent invasions. That allowed the invasions period to be legalized, and Shao Kahn was to be their tool to control," Okada added to it all.
"What? How corrupt can they be!?"
"We do not know, Messenger. So while I was recovering, thanks to Okada, we started planning to expose them both."
"It was my saving Lord Duffeck that granted him my position as Netherrealm's Protector God. An unexpected plus was Shao Kahn himself because he didn't know of his influence before Outworld's throne for himself. So he plotted to have Onaga, the previous Emperor, killed."
Onaga? He was Shao Kahn's predecessor? How long did he rule for? Since he was around when Mom was my age.
"Shao Kahn killing Onaga set Outworld back a solid 3,000 years, following Orion and Argus's plan. In the chaos, they would calm everything down between the two realms and would ascend to the title of Titan. A rare status that even Elder Gods find difficulty attaining. My predecessor, Jonas, was the only Elder God ever to become a Titan. So those two are done for when we confront the other Elder Gods. It was just a matter of dealing with you, Shao Kahn." Duffeck's expression changed again. "And don't act like we didn't notice you talking out of turn again. Okada."
"Yes, milord."
Okada grabbed his helmet and tossed it aside so he could reveal his face, his left eye covered since, you know, I shot it. After infusing his hand with the same hue of indigo as the portal, he mercilessly jabbed his hand through the tyrant's eye, blinding him completely. Shao Kahn yelled, defenseless as two beings more powerful than he force-fed him his crow and forced the albatross across his neck.
"Well done, Okada. Preserve the eye. I plan on putting it on display in my throne room. I can finish things here."
"Yes, Lord Duffeck. I will see you shortly."
"Of course, my friend," Duffeck said as Uncle Okada left, his expression serious once more. "Shao Kahn, your death is at hand. Is there anything you wish to say before you die?"
"I... am the Mighty Shao Kahn. I will... have Earthrealm," he weakly spoke.
"Not very classy for your final words. Not a goodbye to your wife and daughters? Very well."
Duffeck took a step back as his cane shifted and transformed into a King Cobra. The Cobra then lunged at Shao Kahn and buried itself into his soul, the Emperor howling out loud in tremendous pain. Moments later, the Cobra violently exited the body with a bleeding heart, a deep green hue emanating from it. Shao Kahn then fell over on the floor...
Dead.
Good riddance. The torture of Outworld was over at last. The Cobra slithered up Duffeck's arm as its master rubbed the top of its head in affection.
"Good girl. The heart."
She opened its mouth as Shao Kahn's heart fell into Duffeck's hand. "Such taint like this is rare. His soul was so corrupt that it started to infect his body."
Duffeck snapped his fingers, causing the heart, the Emperor's lifeless body, and even his War Hammer to be swept up in a purifying aura. Picking up the now purified War Hammer, he called for Xan.
"Edgemaster." Xan revealed himself to the Elder God. "Catch."
The War Hammer was tossed at Xan. He caught it, the weight pushing him back slightly. "My thanks for killing Abyss and helping with Earthrealm's defense. The weapon had a soul corruption trap, but I have removed it. The War Hammer is yours now. Wield it well."
"Thank you, Duffeck."
"It's nothing." Duffeck then addressed everyone. "You all, as well as those who aren't here to witness this, have my eternal gratitude. Stopping Shao Kahn was move number in restoring true balance to all of reality."
He bowed at us all. We all did the same in respect.
Raiden then teleported to our location. "Lord Duffeck." In reverence, Raiden bowed to him.
"Raiden. It is good to see you well. Cetrion was worried about your health, but she picks her Protector Gods well." Duffeck pointed at Shao Kahn's lifeless body. "I wish I could say the same for Orion."
The Thunder God couldn't believe the sight with his own eyes. "By the Gods... Earthrealm is saved!"
"I am only doing my job. If you wish to thank anyone, do so to those behind you. But while you're here, allow me to make a statement."
Duffeck walked up to Raiden, and when the distance minimized, he motioned for a handshake. Raiden shook it without hesitation. "Earthrealm will always have an ally in the Netherrealm. I will ensure of it. May this be the beginning of a long and prosperous partnership."
"Of course, Lord Duffeck." Raiden then turned to us all. "I am in all of your debt. There is nothing I can do to repay you all for the good you've done for Earthrealm's defense.
"As am I," Duffeck added himself. "Messenger, I think it's time to take Argus and confront the other Elder Gods. Queen Sindel, Princess Kitana, and Princess Jade, as well as yourself, your brother, your mother, and your niece, need a home, yes?"
"Yes, Duffeck. I think it's time indeed."
He nodded in agreement. "Wonderful. When you are ready, meet me in my throne room. I will retrieve Argus from his cell."
"I will see you shortly," I told the Elder God as he walked through his portal with Shao Kahn's corpse in tow as it closed.
"Callie Ann." Kitty faced me. "You will... restore Edenia?"
"Nothing is set in stone yet, Kitty. But with all the dirt we have on Orion and Argus, it's a very distinct possibility. I will head home and rest a bit before going to Duffeck."
"Very well, Callie Ann Maddox. I must return to the Wu-Shi and tell Bo' Rai Cho and Fujin the good news."
"If I may, I wish to accompany you, Raiden. I would like to tell Fujin the news myself," Mom chided.
"Of course, Doctor." Raiden bowed at us all again. "Thank you all once again. May the Elder Gods watch over you."
"Alright, Sareena. We should get you home. It'll be hard for you to get anywhere with your bump becoming more pronounced," Kim mentioned to my sister-in-law.
"Yes, Kim. We should head back to China at once," Benji agreed.
Before JJ left with them, I called for her. "JJ. Let me chat you up for a second. You too, Ilah, Sindel, Mileena, Kitty, and you, Mom."
JJ gave my brother a hug before pecking his cheek. "I'll see you soon, Benji." She then hugged Dakini. "And I'll see you soon, child."
"Okay, Mama. Don't be too long." She and the rest of her new family left.
Skarlet gave me a long kiss on the cheek. "I will see you at the floor levels, beloved." She went downstairs.
"As will I, Callie," Lao said as he followed her. Now that it was just the Edenian women up here.
"So, Callie Ann. What is it you wish to speak to us about?" Sindel asked me.
It was clear everyone was on edge for what I was about to say.
I got straight to the point. "When Edenia's restored, which might as well be guaranteed since Argus and Orion are up against the wall, I want the Freedom Fighters to be reestablished."
"Agreed, General," Sindel voiced her sentiment. "In fact, I want you to lead them once again."
"I'm honored, but I must refuse. I'm already the Drill Sergeant for Special Forces on top of being the Messenger. That's too much even for me," I admitted.
"I see. I understand, Callie. At the least, pick your descendant. I trust whomever you choose, as your judgment is second to none."
"I accept your offer, Sindel. In fact, I won't have to search for long as I already have a replacement in mind."
"Really, sister? Who could you have in mind?" JJ inquired, confused.
I turned to her with a genuine smile. "I'm looking right at her."
Jade blushed in embarrassment. "M-Me...?" She seemed to be at a loss for words. "I... I'm not worthy of being your successor, sister, nor fit to lead. Especially after everything that's happened the past few days, even a few months."
She's referring to all of her mistakes. Our argument while butting heads in Seido, the constant bickering with Xan and Kim, and her sometimes overprotection of Dakini. I can't blame JJ too much for the latter. Every mother would want to defend their child from any danger or slander no matter who's behind it. I would too if I was in her shoes.
Regardless... JJ has more than earned this opportunity.
"Quite the contraire, JJ. You expressed an undying loyalty to Edenia that no one I've ever met before or since has. It was you who convinced not only me to help restore Edenia but Benji as well. You are strong, charismatic, and have a high battle intelligence. In what ways are you not qualified?" My smile was still present all the while.
Sindel, Kitty, Mom, and even Mileena smiled in agreement.
"But of course. There isn't a more qualified individual to take over the mantel. I'm a fool to not notice the perfect candidate. I thank you for opening my eyes, Callie."
Kitty gave her bestie a hug. "Come on, Jade. This is your destiny. Follow in your father Manuel's shoes and become the Edenian Freedom Fighters' new leader. They deserve a leader like you."
"I can only imagine how happy he and Destiny will be in heaven. We can even visit their graves together, daughter. You, Ilah, and I can tell them the good news. Right, Ilah?"
"Of course, Mai. She'll be elated to hear the news."
JJ, surrounded by the overwhelming support, broke down in tears as she hugged me tightly. I gladly accepted the embrace with open arms. It baffles as to why we couldn't get along like this in the beginning. It doesn't matter now as I have two sisters I care for a lot.
I wiped the tears off her face. "You can do this, JJ. No one else is fit to be my replacement."
JJ finally surrendered and nodded in acceptance of her new job. "I... I humbly accept to become your successor, sister. Thank you for giving this opportunity to me."
"Always, sister. Always."
She pulled away from me. "However, I would like to make two requests."
I raised an eyebrow before we stood up, JJ facing everyone. "First, I want to be assured that this job won't impact any quality time with my family. I wouldn't be here without their love and support. Plus, it will give me a chance to work on being a better mother."
Sindel nodded, knowing full well how time missed with her children was detrimental. "Of course, Jade. I can speak from experience that time with family is invaluable."
"Thank you. For my second request, I will not take the position until... I receive help." JJ turned to Mom. "Mrs. Mai-"
"Jade, dear. You don't need to say anything else." Mom took JJ's hands in hers. "I'll make sure you won't be plagued by this ever again. Benji, Sareena, and Dakini will help too."
JJ smiled. "Thank you."
"I thought you were going to mention you know who."
My sister shook her head. "I won't, Callie. Tanya has taken enough from me, and the last thing she will rob me of is my sanity. And honestly, I want us to serve her justice... together."
I nodded. "It's only fitting, sister. Seeing as we both have a bone to pick with that harlot. Tanya's days are numbered. For now," I summoned another portal. "Let's go home and celebrate."
Going downstairs to reunite with my two lovers, I hugged Skarlet while sneaking a kiss on Lao's cheek.
"It's finally over, Callie Ann. The architect of my pain and suffering is finally dead. We can finally return home."
"You can. But I still have one last thing to do. I need to go to the Netherrealm, so Duffeck and I can confront the other Elder Gods. Argus will face justice for the scheming he's done over the millennia. I'll join you at home when Argus is punished, Skar." I kissed my girlfriend's forehead. "I promise."
"Okay, beloved. Go rest, then bring justice to Edenia."
"Of course, Red. Then we can look into your origins since you have no idea where you're even from."
Her face brightened. "You remembered? I would enjoy that immensely."
"Red, you'd enjoy anything if I was with you."
"Do not attack me so personally, my love." She kissed me one last time. "Go rest. You must be tired from working without it."
We separated as I walked up to Lao. I gave him a sneaky kiss on the lips. "I wish we can spend some time together. But the invasion and exposing Argus-"
"I understand, Callie. We were all busy. But promise me one thing."
"What is it?"
He took my hand... and slid an engagement ring on my fourth finger. My eyes almost fell out of my sockets as Lao bent down on one knee. Even Skarlet was shocked as she audibly gasped.
"Promise me after everything has calmed down, Argus is brought to justice and my graduation from the Wu-Shi... That you would do me the honor of becoming my wife?"
I fought down tears, almost not believing this was happening! "You... You want to... marry me?"
I've done nothing but work and spend time with Red, and Lao still built the courage to propose? I haven't done anything to warrant this!
"Of course. I love you. Our relationship hasn't been as established as the Doctor, Sareena, and Jade. But it's just as cemented, even more so since we're not always together like them. I have faith in us. All I ask is you to place the same faith as I do."
Faith? We do have that, do we? Despite our time apart, I've only grown to love Lao more and more during my hours at Special Forces and the spare time spent with Skarlet. I still thought, dreamed, and masturbated about him. (Don't tell Skarlet) I nodded frantically at my now fiancee before pulling him up and kissing him as hard as I could.
"Yes! Yes, Lao! Yes!" I accepted his proposal, eyes filled with joyful tears. "But... What about Skarlet?"
She hugged my side before wiping my tears away. "Do not worry about me, beloved. I am still not a woman worthy of you yet. I'll continue to strive for your love and affection as I have not returned your kindness and love you've given me. Until then, I will stand by your side willingly. Only then will I make that same proposal. But I am elated for you,, my love. After you free Edenia, you should tell our brother the good news."
I kissed Skarlet on the cheek. "Thank you, Skar. You're too good to me. And you too, Lao." I pecked him one last time, feeling completely reinvigorated. "Hell, I don't even have to rest anymore. I feel more awake than ever."
Looking at my engagement ring, the jewel wasn't a diamond but an Amethyst, the same color as my eyes.
"I love it."
"I knew you would, Callie. Go free Edenia. And know that even if we aren't together, that ring will remind you that I will always love and watch over you."
"Okay, wish us luck."
I reluctantly separated from my Fiance and my Muse of Compassion, spawning my Scythe to slash open a portal to Duffeck's room. Upon my arrival, Argus was in a worse condition than yesterday.
"Some of the prisoners got to him and showed no mercy," Duffeck responded. "Are you ready to be transported to the Realm of the Elder Gods?"
"I'm ready, Duffeck. The question is, are you ready? It's been millennia since you've been there."
"I've anticipated this moment for eons, Messenger. It's safe to say that I am ready." He opened two portals. "Take Argus and head to the portal on the right. I will head to the left one."
"What are the names of the other Elder Gods?"
"Cetrion is the Elder God of Earthrealm, Brium is of Seido, and Aamir's Chaosrealm. Orion's obviously Outworld." Duffeck pointed to my portal. "After you. Also, make sure you have the Messenger's Scythe out, so they know exactly who you are."
"Got it."
Once again, I spawned the Messenger's Scythe before hurling Argus' through my portal before following him inside. "Let's do this."
The sight before me was insane.
A primarily white and blue realm as if we were inside a cloud. Six giant thrones the size of the Empire State Building were all in front of me, two of them empty. That was because Argus is right here, and Duffeck has been 'dead' for who knows how long.
The four Elder Gods looked at me speechless until the farthest to the right spoke. "Argus? What have you done to him, woman!?"
"Are you Orion?" I asked bluntly in response.
"Yes, I am Orion! Now explain yourself!"
So I did...
By immediately throwing the Messenger's Scythe at him after he confirmed his identity. A barrier briefly appeared, but the Scythe shattered it and then grew to his size before impaling his chest.
"How's that for an explanation?" I responded coyly. "Traitorous bastard."
Duffeck then appeared behind his throne as the center most woman started laughing at Orion's pain. "Hehehehe. I don't know who she is, but I like her already."
"Hello, everyone. I see you've met my Messenger, Callie Ann Maddox of Edenia."
The others gasped in shock. "Duffeck? We thought you were-"
"Dead? Yes, I'm aware, Cetrion. But I faked my death to govern the Netherrealm in peace. The bickering Orion, Argus, and Brium made me go through was its own layer of hell. But it's good to be back and to see you again, Cetrion, Aamir. I even started missing you, Brium. As for the reason why I went missing, I think the Messenger can answer that for me. Callie?"
"Argus and Orion had plotted many schemes over the millennia. Some of them you probably knew about already, but there are a few that slipped through the cracks." I lifted up Argus's bruised face. "Argus's bastard son, Rain, is one of the former. His, as well as Orion's plan, to kill Duffeck and spark chaos in the Netherrealm only for them to co-rule it is an example of the latter."
"Tch. We had a premonition, but they reassured us that he was killed in a Civil War." The man next to Duffeck commented. "Messenger, I am Brium, Elder God of Seido. I have heard that an Edenian woman who goes by your name and her family helped stop the civil unrest in my realm. Is that your doing?"
"Correct. My brother, sisters-in-law, niece, a family friend, and my girlfriend stopped the Resistance in Seido."
"I thank you for doing so. I see you have at least heard of Orion, thanks to Duffeck. The woman to the far left is Cetrion, Elder God of Earthrealm. Your home, yes?"
"It is."
I bowed at Earthrealm's Elder Goddess. Ability to kill or not, you still have to show respect. Even I am not above that.
"Raiden has told me a bit about you, Cetrion. It's nice to finally meet you." I pointed at the only person not mentioned by name. "Which makes you Aamir?"
"Aamir, Maria. Makes no difference to me, Messenger. But you've certainly caught my attention. I prayed that someone would knock Orion down a peg. And then you impale him with your Scythe. Hehe! Look at him writhing in pain! That image will stay in my mind for the rest of my immortal life. If you have a pitch for something to be done, you already have my vote."
"Thank you, Aamir. Duffeck, if you don't mind doing the honors?"
"Why, thank you, Callie. I will accept your proposal. So you have all heard of Earthrealm defeating Outworld in the Mortal Kombat two years ago. Did you hear about the second tournament that Shao Kahn, Orion's Protector God, forced upon Earthrealm?"
"What!?" Brium glared death daggers at the man beside him. "Orion! Explain yourself!"
"He's still in pain, Brium," Aamir pointed out, a smile still present on her face. "Messenger, explain in his place, please? I like the sound of your voice."
"Okay. Shao Kahn forced Earthrealm to compete in a second Mortal Kombat tournament against your consent. Raiden accepted despite the unfair stipulations. We won, and Shao Kahn lost his claim to Earthrealm forever. You all signed off on it."
"Yes, I remember that day. Orion never had his pride so wounded before or since," Brium commented.
"But Shao Kahn invaded Earthrealm anyway. And Argus' bastard, Rain, was a high-ranking member of the opposing army. After Argus here," I mentioned before kicking him in the stomach. "Promised that Rain would not cause trouble for Earthrealm anymore. He clearly didn't keep his promise since an Edgemaster killed his son in front of me. Argus also promised he'd look into separating Edenia from Outworld. I'm originally from Edenia, so I was excited at the prospect of having her restored. But I assume he didn't do anything of the sort."
"Not once did he mention Edenia or her restoration, Messenger. Which means he broke that promise as well?"
"Exactly, Cetrion."
"Thank you, Callie. I will take things from here." Duffeck expressed his gratitude. "Orion and Argus also spared a Konqueror."
That caught everyone's attention.
"They did what?" Aamir inquired, smiling expression gone.
"You heard me, Aamir. What did you all think Shao Kahn was?"
"Shao, a Konqueror? We thought he was a Tigrar Shokan who lost his upper arms in a mutation! What the hell, Orion!?" Aamir asked furiously.
I snapped my fingers, and the Scythe left Orion's chest, leaving a gaping hole in its place.
"Oh, yes. Did I mention that the manipulation of the Messengers was a thing since Argus's two past predecessors?"
That really caught their attention. Even with the chest wound, Orion looked pressured beyond comprehension. "All because they want to be Titans like Jonas once was."
"Messenger, tell me you have something you want for Outworld so I can agree. Hopefully, it'll involve removing Orion from his position."
"I agree with Aamir. Callie Ann, if you'd allow me to call you that. Do you have anything that you wish to be done?" Cetrion asked. "As Elder God of our home, I will do what I can to make it so."
"Well, Cetrion. Funny you should ask. See, through Shao Kahn's perpetual self grave digging, he resurrected Queen Sindel from the dead despite resurrection being a big no-no. In doing so, he reunited her with her real family after Okada and my brother, Benjamin Maddox, purified her soul tainted by him. Princess Kitana, as well as Princess Jade, are also alive and well. I believe it's only fair for them to rule their own realm. So, I order, not, request, Orion," I kicked Argus again. "And this idiot writhing in pain next to me to do whatever the hell is needed to separate Edenia from Outworld forever. I also want a permanent ban on realm invasion and Mortal Kombat as a preventative measure. Follow those demands, and I won't remove Orion or Argus from their positions. The crimes both of them committed in an attempt to become Titans would normally be punishable by death, bare minimum."
Brium gravelly nodded. "Indeed, Messenger. All in favor?"
All the Elder Gods (Even Orion with his gaping chest wound) raised their hands in the air.
"Thankfully, the first demand is actually the easiest one." Brium eyed the Elder God of Outworld, fed up with his antics. "Orion?"
"Tch..." That was all Orion got out as he and Argus snapped their fingers.
I heard a loud rumbling sound coming from below us. It got stronger as the seconds went by until it stopped after a few minutes.
"It's done," Orion muttered.
Edenia has at last been freed.
"As for your other demands, Callie Ann, I'm afraid those will take time. But rest assured, we will ensure the bans will take hold."
"Fair enough. I can't expect everything to be done in a day. Running multiple armies taught me that."
"Well! Now that's covered, can we go?"
"Aamir, what's got you in such a rush?" Brium asked her.
"I haven't seen my husband in 30,000 years, Brium." Her tone then turned dead serious. "And I want to fuck."
Wait, Duffeck and Aamir are... husband and wife? I didn't know the Elder Gods even married, let alone slept together. I mean, he has good tastes. Aamir is the most attractive out of the Elder Gods despite being from Chaosrealm. Duffeck must have a thing for black cakes, apparently. Okay, I'm thinking too deep on this. I picked up Argus and tossed his carcass in the direction of his throne seat. He fell on it and passed out from all his injuries.
"Well, I guess this surprise meeting has ended. Thank you, Messenger, for restoring balance to the Elder Council. I'm looking forward to working alongside you," Brium said as he left.
"As will I, Callie Ann. A pleasure to meet you. Do not hesitate to summon me if you need anything. I am always willing to help with restoring balance to Earthrealm," Cetrion promised as she too departed.
Duffeck and Aamir moved to my platform as they matched my height. "I don't think that could've gone any better. You did a phenomenal job, Callie. If you didn't notice, Aamir and I are married."
"I noticed now. You look good together, if that means anything," I commented. "So, what is it that you do for the Elder Council, Aamir?"
"I'm the keeper of the moral balance, ensuring the good and evil in reality remains equal. Balance is preferred, but too much good isn't so bad. Too much evil, and I'll have to balance it all." She took my hand and shook it. "With you as the Messenger, we may finally have the ability to keep Orion and Argus grounded. It's been too long since that happened." She then turned to her husband. "Will you return to your throne, honey?"
"No, I have my throne in the Netherrealm, as well as a Protector God of my own."
"Really? You should have me meet him. Make a day out of it."
"Certainly, Aamir." Duffeck turned to me. "You have done well, Callie. Return home and get some rest. You of all people deserve it. After you tell the others the good news, of course. We will speak at a later date. I believe Aamir wishes to 'make up' for lost time."
"Sure, Duffeck. I'll see you soon."
Within moments, I returned to the Trainer's Estate, where mostly everyone was staying at the time.
"Sister?" JJ first noticed me and approached. "What happened at the Realm of the Elder Gods?"
I smiled like an idiot. "We are free at last."
Dakini's POV:
I couldn't believe it. I'm finally going to see the realm that represented my true identity. Words can't express the happiness I feel right now. I've always heard stories from Mama about Edenia and the beautiful land it was despite its fickle populous. Don't get me wrong. Earthrealm will always have a special place in my heart, but it's not my birthplace.
There's no replacing my actual origin.
The night went on with constant celebration after Auntie Callie came back and announced that the realms were free forever. You should've seen everyone's reaction as the fighting, planning, and strategy had finally ended. Even Mr. Xan allowed himself a smile with Mileena right by his side. I have to say that they look rather cute as a couple. I've also never seen Auntie Callie so happy, and for good reason. She showed off her spectacular engagement ring from Uncle Lao. You could hear the numerous squeals of joy from Mama, Ms. Sareena, Kitty, and Grandma Mai. Dad's smile stretched across his face before giving his student a cheeky elbow.
Before things got too crazy, Auntie made another huge announcement that Mama would be the Freedom Fighters' newest General. I failed to fight back the tears as everything had come full circle. I gave Mama the biggest hug I could as I knew how much this meant to her personally. Grandma Destiny and Grandpa Manuel would be elated beyond words. Benji and Sareena also gave their congratulations by giving Mama a sweet, tender kiss.
"Get a room," I joked.
From the looks of it, they were considering that notion. And judging from what took place last time, things could get even worse. They all laughed and assured us that they wouldn't do it with everyone here. Thank goodness.
No longer do I have to worry about the bleak future that almost robbed me of my friends and family. That's all in the rearview mirror now. Shao Kahn's invasion was a complete failure, and he suffered the worst possible death one could receive. Outworld will also never worry about him ever again, either. However, a few things still bother me even now.
Tanya and Ko'atal are still out there.
I can tell Mama's still a bit apprehensive about her two tormentors. Yet, I believe they won't come out of hiding for a long time with no plan or backup to rely on. That doesn't mean we can become complacent. Not to mention Daegon's psychopathic. But now's not the time to dwell on them.
"So, y'all ready to leave?" Callie asked.
"But what about the Trainer's Estate? We didn't tell Raiden about the possibility of us leaving," Dad pointed out.
Sareena touched his face. "Dear, Raiden said we can still own the place for as long as we please. His gift to us after our efforts."
Auntie nodded. "Exactly. The way I see it, think of it as your getaway place. Besides," She said before looking at me. "I'm sure my little niece is ready to learn more of her rich history. Right, Daki?"
My smile grew. "Yes!"
With that, Auntie drew out her Scythe and created another portal. "Then onward we go!'
Arriving on the other side, the scene was absolutely breathtaking. The imaginative stories my parents told me do not do the entire scene justice. Nature was abounded throughout the plains, reaching far as the eye could see. The central kingdom wasn't too far from where we were, this pasture featuring common homes.
"And I thought the forests back in Japan were serene." Mr. Xan commented.
"It feels like home, despite this being my first time being here." Kim added. Considering that they've been Earthrealm their hold lives I half expected a response like that.
"Hey, Jade," Dad got Mama's attention. "Isn't this where your parents lived?"
"Yes... yes, it is." She looked farther down and pointed to the middle house. "That's it there. Come."
We all followed her lead inside. The house itself had all the bare necessities here, almost like it was never touched. I could feel traces of magic and wisdom within these very walls. Everyone else did too.
"Such memories," Grandma Mai said softly. "Every Sunday, Ilah and I would come here to see Destiny and talk into the wee hours of the morning. We shared countless stories and talked about the possibility of having kids."
Ilah nodded. "Yes, those were the times. I was undecided if I ever wanted to bear a child as motherhood seemed difficult, let alone childbirth."
"Mother said the same... until she had me."
Mama walked into the living room, where we saw a rocking chair with a small green blanket. She carefully picked it up, a tear in her eye. I assumed that was what she was wrapped in while Grandma Destiny cradled her as a baby.
"This was my favorite blanket. Both Mother and Father used to sing lullabies to me before tucking me in..." Mama whispered. "I... am truly home."
Dad and Ms. Sareena hugged her. "Yes, we are home. But what about the rest of the populous?"
"Do not worry, Benjamin," Sindel interjected. "I'll ensure those matters are handled. Of course, this will be the perfect opportunity to groom Kitana and Mileena for their eventual leadership. Edenia is now in great hands."
"I know we'll probably have to take the General's house, but is there any way we can reserve this house as a landmark?" Dad inquired.
"A terrific idea. Leave that to me," Kitana added.
Then, both Mama's and my necklace began glowing again, the light nearly blinding us all. The message was subtle but got its point across.
Home is where the heart is.
Grandma Destiny and Grandpa Manuel's voices... Truly unreal.
A/N: Arc IV is over! We made it this far, I can't believe it myself. Before I go, I want to shoot the shit with you all for a minute.
First as usual. Thanks for keeping up for this long. I really appreciate it, never did I imagine that this story would blow up like this. We're only going up from here.
Second, some news about this story. Don't worry, I'm not ending the story here (even though I definitely could with how it ended.). I'd probably receive death threats if I do. But it's no secret that Arc V whenever I start it will take place in MKX which means there's going to be a large time skip. Twenty Five Years to be exact. I plan on getting to the 3D Era games, except Armageddon. So, you all can make a safe guess as to who the villain of the last Arc is. If I had to guess, then there are at least three Arcs left.
With that being said, after the 'Bonus Chapters' that being the Kombatant Koncepts and the Arc Dialogues, I'm gonna take a small break on GbNF to focus on a couple of other stories (especially a certain Second POV story that people keep asking me to bring back, despite it being Completed.). I want to focus on YGJ for the time after I'm done with those.
Thanks again. I'll see you all soon.
