We both knew this type of life
Didn't come with instructions
So I'm trying to do my best to
Make something out of nothing
And sometimes it gets downright
Shitty in fact
Josephine paced nervously. Juice was supposed to be on his way home today, but she hadn't heard from him. Why the fuck am I panicking? She thought to herself as she got the twins down for bed. It wasn't like her to worry about anyone else but herself and the twins, but here she was, worrying about a guy she barely knew. It was nine o'clock, and she felt herself growing drowsy when she heard the familiar sound of a motorcycle. Jumping to her feet, she headed for the door and swung it open. To her surprise, there was not only a motorcycle but a van sitting in front of her house. Chibs was opening the side door to the van as a guy she hadn't met was getting off his motorcycle and running to the van. She was frozen at the door, not knowing what to do. It wasn't until Chibs and the other person were carrying someone towards her that her heart dropped into her stomach. Juice was supported by the two of them, and he looked pale and out of it.
"What the hell happened?" she snapped as they came up onto the porch. She backed out of the doorway so they could carry him inside.
"We ran into some trouble, lass," Chibs explained.
"Bedroom?" the other guy asked. Josephine pointed down the hall. They followed her direction as Josephine shut and locked her door. She quickly returned to her bedroom to see the guys had gotten Juice onto the bed. Springing into action, Josephine approached the bed, assessing Juice head to toe.
"He got shot," the other guy explained. Josephine quickly glanced at him to see the VP badge on his kutte. She eyed him before turning back to Juice.
"One of you go into my closet and take out my medic bag. And then, in the kitchen, right above my coffee cups, is a giant bottle of whiskey. He's gonna need it." Chibs followed her instructions and headed out of the room. Josephine immediately grabbed for her trauma sheers and started cutting up Juice's pant leg. At that time, Juice let out a low chuckle.
"What's so funny?" she asked, quirking an eyebrow.
"Didn't think you'd be getting my pants off before the first date," Juice laughed through clenched teeth.
"Funny," Josephine said with an eye roll, turning her attention to the guy on the other side of the bed.
"Hey, um…"
"Jax." Josephine's eyes widened, and she nodded. So that's the one that's dating the doc, she thought.
"Yeah, Jax. I'm gonna need you to help Chibs hold him down. There's no exit wound, so I'm gonna need to get the bullet out to prevent infection." Chibs reappeared, dropped the medic bag on the bed, and handed her the bottle of whiskey. She stepped into her bathroom for a moment before coming out with a pill bottle. Handing Juice two tablets, she told him to take them and held out the bottle of whiskey. Juice did as he was told before laying back.
"So much for a first date," he sighed, closing his eyes.
"Pretty sure after this, you won't want to date me," Josephine smirked before looking at Chibs. He nodded and got in position to hold Juice down. Rifling through the bag, Josephine pulled out what she needed and threw a pair of gloves on. Rolling up a small towel, she passed it to Juice, who looked confused.
"You're gonna wanna bite on this." He nodded, biting down on it as she got to work. After a few minutes of fighting, he passed out from the pain just as Josephine pulled out the bullet fragment. She cleaned the wound and applied pressure before moving on to take his vitals and start an IV. Just then, the doorbell rang. Her head shot up in panic, and Jax caught her eye.
"Just Tig and Tara," he said, heading towards the door. When Jax returned, a brunette followed him, which Josephine quickly recognized.
"Dr. Knowles!" she said, "We got a gunshot. No exit would. Vitals are stable for now. He's diaphoretic, and I have fluids running wide open." Tara nodded at her, approaching the bed to assess Juice. She quickly glanced up at Josephine, offering her a light smile.
"Dr. Knowles isn't needed. Just call me Tara." Josephine looked down sheepishly.
"He's gonna need antibiotics and more fluids," she looked at Tara. Just then, she heard crying coming from the twins' room. She went to strip her gloves off, but Chibs touched her arm to stop her.
"Don't worry, lass, we got 'em. Just take care of Juicey boy." Chibs nodded at Tig, and the two headed out of the room.
"Should I trust them with the twins?" The words tumbled out of her mouth before she could stop herself.
"Actually, out of all the guys to trust, those are the top two on my list," Tara told her confidently, "Tig even watched Abel for us. He's great with kids." In less than a minute, the crying stopped, and Josephine felt the anxiety melt away.
"I'll swing by the hospital and grab some meds and supplies." Josephine nodded as Jax ushered Tara towards the door.
"We'll be right back!" Jax yelled to her. After a moment, she heard her front door open, followed by a motorcycle revving to life. She rechecked Juice before dipping into the living room to check on the twins. Tig was lying on the floor doing tummy time with them. Chibs emerged from the kitchen, holding two bottles in his hands.
"Lass, found the milk in the freezer, warmed it up," he explained and she nodded in response. Tig sat up, picking up Rory.
"Go take care of him. We got the babes," Chib said, passing Tig a bottle before reaching down to pick up Ollie. Realizing the twins were in good hands, she returned to her bedroom. She sat down and took a damp facecloth to wipe Juice's forehead. It caused him to stir and open his eyes, which swept the room before falling on her face.
"Hey you," he whispered hoarsely. A smile grew on Josephine's face.
"Hi. Glad to see you awake." He attempted to adjust in the bed, letting out a loud hiss and collapsing back.
"Don't do that," Josephine ordered. He shot her a forced grin.
"Doing my best," he whispered before falling back asleep. Shortly after, she heard her front door open. A moment later, Tara appeared in her room and passed Josephine a bag of items. Glancing in, she saw not only fluids and antibiotics but vials of dopamine, epinephrine, and Dilaudid.
"Thank you," she said as she began to pull stuff out of the bag. She quickly swapped out the bag of fluids and gave him a dose of Dilaudid and antibiotics through his IV. Taking his vitals, his blood pressure was a little lower than she wanted it to be, but she knew it would improve.
"I can take the twins for the night." The offer made Josephine's head swivel.
"No, it's ok."
"Josephine, he needs to be monitored. I know how it is with infants. You'll have your hands full," Tara reasoned. Pausing to think it over, Josephine let out a loud sigh.
"It's not that I don't trust you. They've just never been away from me unless I was working."
"Well, technically, you are." Tara gestured to Juice laid up on the bed.
"Ok. Fine. I'll pack the diaper bag, and I have breast milk in the freezer for them."
"Go ahead. I'll sit with Juice," Tara said, sitting on the edge of the bed. Josephine hesitated, looking at Juice, before turning and walking to the twin's room. She packed their diaper bag with the necessities, dropping it onto the couch in the living room when she was done. Taking in the scene before her, her heart warmed. Chibs was standing quietly, rocking Ollie and talking quietly to Tig. Tig, on the other hand, was leaning back on the couch with Rory sleeping on his chest. He was lightly patting her back. Not wanting to disturb the peace, she headed into the kitchen and grabbed her mini cooler. She grabbed bags of milk from the freezer before packing them in the cooler, along with freezer packs and bottles.
"Heard we're taking the twins for the night." Jumping, Josephine turned to see Jax leaning in the doorway.
"Shit, I should've made sure Tara checked with you before I said yes."
"It's fine," Jax said with a chuckle, "I was the one who suggested the idea. Plus, you're doing the club a favor. Least we can do."
"I'm not really doing the club a favor. I'm doing it for Juice." Jax nodded before shoving his hands into his pockets.
"Still a favor for the club. You're patching up one of our brothers." Josephine nodded, zipping up the cooler and passing it to Jax.
"Take care of him," Jax said as Josephine headed into the living room. She stopped and looked over her shoulder, "I will. You take care of them."
"Of course," Jax said with a nod. Without saying anything else, she got the twins' car seats set to go. She turned to Chibs and Tig.
"Thanks, boys." Chibs had started to put Ollie in his car seat.
"Anytime, darling," Tig said, standing up to pass Rory to Josephine. She kissed Rory on the head before placing her in the car seat and buckling her. She then leaned over to kiss Ollie on his head.
"Ready to go?" Josephine realized Jax wasn't talking to her but to Tara, who had just joined them in the living room.
"I'll bring them back in the morning," Tara reassured her, hugging her.
"Sounds good," Josephine said as she returned the hug. She watched nervously as Tig helped Jax carry out the car seats while Tara grabbed the diaper bag and cooler. Tara followed Jax out of the house, turning to give Josephine a light wave. Chibs pulled Josephine in for a hug.
"Thanks again, lass," he whispered.
"Anytime," Josephine replied as Chibs pulled away and started to head to the door.
"Chibs?" Josephine started causing Chibs to freeze and turn to face her.
"Why'd you bring him here? Tara's a doctor. I'm just a nurse," she finished with a sigh.
"Lass, he asked us to. Apparently, the boy trusts you." Chibs waited as Josephine processed it before giving him a nod.
"Take care of him, lass." He walked out of the door, shutting it behind him. Josephine proceeded to lock all the locks before heading back to her bedroom.
