Author's note: The story is based on the movie, Tears of the Sun. It does not follow the movie plot, there is no rescue mission. Instead, it is set in a mission similar to the one in the movie where the SEAL team is stationed. It is set in the present and all the characters from the movie will appear. I am aware that some of the descriptions and events may not be realistic, they were created solely for the story.

WARNING: the story contains references to sexual assault, drug use, swearing and descriptions of violence and sensuality. There will be a warning in the beginning of all chapters.

I am aware that Tears of the Sun is all old movie, but it is my all-time favourite and I finally got the courage to publish it.

Chapter 1

Yesterday Lena informed all the hospital staff that an elite team of navy SEALs will be stationed at the mission. They will help the other soldiers to guard the premises and will be sent out to special missions from here. As they also had a doctor in their team he will be also helping in the hospital. Our mission had two functions. It was half a military base due to its importance in maintaining diplomatic relationships between Nigeria and America since the start of the civil war. It also functioned as a refugee camp with a hospital and a church. Since the civil war started a lot of staff have left. Currently there were 15 nurses, 6 doctors, 2 nuns, who helped caring for the injured, a priest and a lot more refugees than we could look after. I have been here for a year now as the charge nurse of the hospital. Despite the suffering and despair that I have witnessed every day, I have enjoyed every second of it.

Since Lena was in the operating theatre, it was my task to welcome the new doctor and show him around. I was walking around, making sure all the tasks that were needed to be completed were in fact completed when sister Siobhan came in to inform me that Dr Kelly has arrived.

After landing on the base, the team was standing in front of what looked like the hospital. A man was walking away from it with the help of crutches. He had a bandage on his leg which was soaked in blood. Then suddenly the door slammed open, and a woman came out. She was small with a slim frame. She had olive skin, and her hair was dark brown, thick and wavy and she wore it in a high ponytail, but it looked like it would reach her waist if she let it down. From her uniform it looked like she was one of the nurses. She was followed by one of the nuns. To the soldiers' surprise she did not go up to them but addressed the man with the crutches.

- Mr Ugubere – she said sternly – I believe I told you that you are not allowed to leave your bed – the man was about to say something but she cut him off.

- Sister Siobhan will escort you back and I better not see you trying to escape from the hospital again – her voice did not leave space for any arguments. The nun escorted the man back but before she left, she looked at the soldiers for a few seconds. Finally, the nurse turned to the team.

- Dr Kelly I assume – she looked at Doc who was standing at the front of the group. She had a truly beautiful face.

- Yes ma'am.

- Araminta Marquez – she said and shook hands with Doc. She had a surprisingly strong handshake for a woman her size.

- These are my team mates, Lake, Silk, Flea, Zee, Slo and Red – Araminta looked each soldier in the eye with her light brown ones.

- I assume you are one of the nurses? – Doc asked.

- Yes, I am the charge nurse of the hospital. Now if you could follow me.

Before following Araminta, Red, who was standing behind Doc, leaned over his shoulder.

- You might be a doctor and a navy SEAL but she is definitely in charge – he said smirking, in a mocking tone with a slight awe in his voice. Doc just shook his head smiling. Red and strong fiery women.

Araminta showed them the hospital. At the end of the tour, she said;

- It is not much but we are doing all we can.

Suddenly another man entered the hospital.

- Lieutenant Waters ma'am – he introduced himself to Araminta and they shook hands.

- The head of the hospital, Dr Lena Kendricks will be with you this evening. She is currently in the operating theatre – Lieutenant Waters nodded.

- We are having a meeting in 10 at the base – he addressed the soldiers who followed him out. Before turning around, Red took another look at Araminta. Their eyes met for a second and then he followed his team. After all of them left, Siobhan appeared next to Araminta.

- They are cute – she said giggling like a schoolgirl. Araminta rolled her eyes. This woman should have never become a nun. She likes man in uniform too much.

- Especially the one with the dirty blonde hair and blue eyes – she continued fawning – what was his name?

- Red I believe – Araminta said before she left to insert a canula in one of the patients.

It was the evening, and I was walking to my favourite spot. It was a bit further in the jungle, hidden from the camp. I just needed to relax after a shitstorm of a shift. I have just sat down to look at the stars when I heard leaves rustle. I turned back quickly, and I saw one of the soldiers from Dr Kelly's team. The one with the dirty blonde hair and blue eyes that Siobhan couldn't shut up about since he arrived.

- Ma'am you need to come back with me – he said scanning the surroundings.

- Why?

- It is not safe here during the night. My orders are to bring you back.

- I have been coming here for ages during the night and no one had a problem with it.

- Ma'am my orders are to bring you back – he repeated, still scanning the surroundings, and holding his rifle.

- Who gave you those orders? – I asked stubbornly. He stopped scanning around and zeroed in on me. His gaze was cold and stern. With his military uniform and rifle, he looked deadly.

- Ma'am this is for your safety. Now please follow me – I gave up. I knew his is not going to budge. We started going back and I could feel him glancing at me several times. When we reached the camp, he looked at me.

- Ma'am please go back to your room. And if you go back to that clearing, I will find you and bring you back again.

- Wow you are a mind reader as well? – because he said exactly what I was planning to do.

- I am a SEAL, it is my job to read people – I did not reply but we had a bit of a staring contest. I just realized that he had striking blue eyes, and they were looking at me sternly. After a few seconds, I turned around and went back to my room. Around 20 minutes later, I decided to go walk around. I felt restless and agitated and walking always calmed me down. I was wandering through the different buildings when I saw a shadow coming up behind me. I turned around and it was him again.

- Wow, you are everywhere, aren't you?

- I am making sure that you are safe….and you are not going back to the clearing.

- So, what, you have been assigned to follow me around? Like a personal bodyguard?

- I am assigned to keep everyone safe on my shift. Especially the ones who have a difficult time obeying rules – I could see a small smirk on his lips. Was he teasing me?

- Fine, I'll go back to my room. Do you want to follow me there as well? –This time I smirked. We had that staring contest again.

- Fine, I will go back and go to bed, I promise – I finally said.

- Have a good night ma'am - I was walking back when he called after me.

- And ma'am if you leave your room again, I will know.

- Of course you will – I replied.

The next few days, I saw him around the camp. I could feel that he was keeping a close eye on me, having that same intense, stern look. Every time he looked at me, it gave me shivers. Not exactly the bad kind. I also caught myself glancing at him a few times when I saw him around.

I came out from the hospital after my shift. The night air was humid and warm. I sat down a bit further from the hospital on the ground and looked at the stars. It was the thing I loved doing here the most. It made me feel calm and it's not like you could Netflix and chill here with a glass of wine after a long day. Then I felt someone standing behind me.

- Oh, it's you again – I said when I saw the same soldier. Red.

- I could say the same thing ma'am. I hope we are not going to have any problems tonight – he gave me that stern look again. His eyes were shining like crystals in the night. It was mesmerizing.

- Maybe – as I said it, I saw him narrowing his eyes – Oh for God's sake it was a joke. I will be a good girl, I promise – he just kept looking at me sternly.

- Have a good night, ma'am - When he turned around, I rolled my eyes. Yeah, me and him will not get along. I never would have thought how wrong I was.
