It was a cool cloudy day, way different than the usual sunny days on the beach, usually days like this attracted nothing but seagulls and maybe hard core beach goers, but today Sweet Valley's beach was filled with a impromptu bachelor party.
Winston was wearing his favorite shirt, the same shirt he wore last night during Todd's grand reopening, Winston wanted to celebrate his last hurrah as a single man, especially when he promised Brooke he was going to get rid of it for good. Winston was sad to lose this shirt, but as a promise to his future wife, he agreed to burn it. He waved to Bruce and Reggie who pulled up in Reggie's SUV.
"Bruce! Reg!" He waves them over. "Have a hot dog!" He had a small bonfire, he and Todd were roasting various foods and marshmallows.
"Nothing for me. Thanks." Reggie wanted to surf, and preferred to do that in a empty stomach. He did indulge whenever he was finished. He was getting wheeled by Bruce, he wasn't ready to walk yet, he was just starting his rehab. His nurse says he can body surf and swim, it helped him keep him fit. "Save me a beer."
"Sure buddy. Bruce?"
"Is it gourmet?"
Winston laughs as Todd pulls out a package.
"Was shipped all the way from the butcher shop in France." Both Todd and Winston tried them, they didn't taste any different from regular hot dogs
"I'll take two."
"Winnie!" Winston waves at his old friend. Wendy wasn't staying, she was heading to Brooke's party across town, but her husband Paloma was staying for the bonfire. She was in the wedding party, she and Todd were sharing Best Man/Woman duties.
"Want a dog? Burger?"
"Nah. I'm going to the Dairy Burger remember? But hand me a beer." She thanks Winston. She was considered the 'Plain Jane,' of the group back when they all worked as lifeguards back during that one summer, but once she allowed her true personality to shine, she was pursued relentlessly by the opposite sex, to her shock. But she only had eyes for one man, her now husband Paloma, who was still crazy about her. Now a successful influencer, she and her husband enjoyed a comfortable life. "Just wanted to congratulate you both." She knew Todd back during those days, they were coworkers, and good friends along with Winston. "Todd, don't worry about the limelight! Paloma and myself were in a reality TV show back in the day. It's no big deal."
"It was South Big Brother." Todd didn't understand Spanish, but watched it with subtitles. He was disappointed when Wendy was voted off early in the season. But it was either her or Paloma. He managed to make it to the finals, but lost to a major Latino pop star. "But thanks. Having all of you there made me forget about everything."
"Anyways, I just came here to see Winston's last day as a single man. But first a selfie with the lucky groom. "Say Hog Dog!"
Winston and Wendy smile as they take bites of their dogs, it was a tribute to Winston's summer job at Sweet Valley Shores when he failed his lifeguard training and was forced to peddle hot dogs to pay the bills. It ended up being one of Winston's best summer vacations, he and Wendy became life long best friends, he considered her the twin he never had.
"Hot dog!" He smiles huge. "Thanks Wen." He gives her a huge hug. "Tell my bride to have fun, and eat enough Dairy burgers for me."
"Will do! See you tomorrow at the wedding!" She hops on her rented moped and drives away.
"Win!" Winston waves to Aaron Dallas. A good friend of his back in high school, Aaron went to Europe to try his hand at European Football. Now gunning for the Olympics for one of Europe's football teams, Aaron was ultra busy training hard for a spot.
"Dallas!" They bro fist. Winston couldn't help but feel a twinge of jealousy. Aaron was always athletic, but these days was ripped thanks to his training and hard work. "Mind autographing my magazine?" He blushed when Aaron laughed.
"Sure buddy." Winston pretended to swoon.
"You know how much this would be worth on EBay?" Winston joked. Aaron was hugely famous on the soccer circuit, he was in talks to be Gazette's newest spokesperson for men's razors.
"I can't believe you kept that rag!" Aaron was always so humble, he was embarrassed about being featured in nothing in his underwear in Men's Fitness as the cover model.
"Why wouldn't I? Your honesty about you know..." Winston remembered Aaron's temper in high school. It was explosive. He was treated, but Winston and their friends never pushed for details about his therapy.
"Don't worry about it." Aaron cut Winston off. "Mental health issues shouldn't be stigmatized, EVER. I got so many letters from troubled kids, they thanked me for being honest, many were afraid to seek treatment." Aaron's interview talked about the disorder he suffered, how he fought everyday to hide it. But after videos of him leaked online destroying a hotel lobby, he sought help. Aaron's agent was afraid Aaron's soccer career would suffer, but the opposite happened. By opening up to the public, he told the world about how rough it was after his parent's divorce, and how he spiraled out of control lashing out at everyone. That article caught the attention of many journalists who wanted a television interview. He agreed and did many television interviews, talked at seminars, and even was a guest at Danny Wyatt's talk show. Now with the upcoming Olympics, he was offered millions by corporate companies to shill their products. So far he was the face of Propel Water and was selling vitamins with his name on them as the official spokesperson.
"Well, I'm glad you are doing well. How's Heather?" Aaron was one of the few that married right after high school. It was admittedly a shotgun wedding, since Heather Sanford was three months along. But after all these years, both were still happily married, living with their teenage son and adopted daughter.
"She's doing good, her new line of clothing will be sold here in the States." Heather dreamed about being a fashion designer, she was hoping to attend F.I.T, (Fashion Institute of Technology) but after finding out she was pregnant, she was forced to change her plans. Especially after Aaron got offered a position in Norway's soccer team after a tryout.
Aaron at the time was forced to skip college to support his family to his family's disappointment. He ended up working in a warehouse, disappointed and angry about losing his dreams. But his wife always pushed Aaron to never give up. She said it was a bump, not a roadblock. It took Aaron three years to find his big break, but not until playing his dues first. Now a successful athlete, he was able to give his family a very successful life.
"She worked hard for this." Aaron gushed. He loved Heather, she was the only one that truly believed in him, unlike his parents, and never blamed Aaron for his outbursts. "Hope you and Brooke buy big, her summer clothing will be better than that shirt your wearing." Aaron says with a laugh. That shirt was legendary in Sweet Valley.
"Again with the shirt!" Winston pretended to be wounded. "You'll be happy to know, it's going to the great big shirt heaven in the sky after the bonfire."
"Good."
Once the rest of the guests showed up, Winston announced it was time to party.
"Attention fellow partiers! Welcome to my last hurrah as a Sweet Valley's most eligible bachelor!" He laughed as everyone groaned. "Anyways, no speech! Let's party!" Winston downed his beer.
"Woooo!" Almost everyone ran to the water, or drank and ate the food.
Winston smiled as everyone had fun. He looked at the surfers.
'Denise.' He smiled a sad smile. 'Thanks for everything. Thank you for giving me that confidence I never had in high school. Thank you for being a kind soul. Thank you for being there.' He salutes her spirit with a cheeseburger, their private joke when they broke up and got back together. Smelling her perfume, he knew Denise came to say goodbye.
"Egbert! Come in the water!" Shred called.
"Be right there!" Winston took one last look. He was finally ready to let go of the past. Denise would want him to be happy. 'Goodbye Denise.' When her perfume smell disappeared, he knew Denise was at peace.
"Win!"
"I'm coming! Sheesh." Winston picks up his surf board and runs in the water.
