Chapter 317 The Wandering Madness
Evan felt his heart pounding as he watched the monster above him apprehensively.
His body was completely hidden in the stone wall of the ceiling, wrapped, showing only half of its head and its huge blood-red eyes.
There were no other organs in its head besides the eyes, tentacles, and rough skin.
It whimsically waved its tentacles, looking extremely repugnant, completely worn out. The strangest thing about the monster were its huge blood-red eyes, in which no emotion was reflected. They were cold, indifferent, and ruthless, and its long, thin pupils were almost in a straight line.
Within the pupil was a deep darkness, as if connected to the universe, like a small black hole where even light twisted.
'Just come closer and you won't escape, you will be devoured mercilessly...'
What exactly was this monster?
It was exactly what had been depicted by the dark wizard in the previous murals, but it actually looked even more striking.
Evan gasped. His previous attack had not worked.
The spell seemed to pass right through the Enemy's body. Without much thought, Evan instinctively waved his magic wand and a red glow struck it once more.
This time, he could clearly see his magic passing through the other monster, disappearing in the blink of an eye without a trace, as if the light was swallowed.
Strange, what was happening? Was this monster immune to magic?
"Resistance is futile, your soul will end up being devoured by me!" echoed a deep whisper directly in Evan's mind.
"What on earth are you?" Evan subconsciously asked, tightening his wand.
"To you, I am God, entrusted with death and eternal life. Only by believing in me can you understand the meaning of peace!" it whispered, "Lost sheep, I will save you and help you escape death. Believe in me! Believe in me!"
"I do not need your salvation, nor do I desire eternal life!" Evan shouted. "Your temptations mean nothing to me..."
"Oh, really? You told me you do not fear death, that you watch me suspiciously, but you do not know that in your dream, I know you like the back of my hand!" the whisper continued. "I know your deepest secrets and your ambitions! Look around you, infinite darkness is surrounding you. In this sunken ruin, you will fall into a dream. Will you have the same dream again?"
"I JUST TOLD YOU I HAVE NO DREAM AND I DO NOT WANT TO SLEEP!" Evan shouted at the top of his voice. "I am not going to dream, you will not control me!"
He felt the air around him becoming increasingly suffocating, finding it hard to breathe. With the thought of being thousands of feet underground, facing the unknown monster, his mind was filled with horrible and cruel thoughts one after another...
The beast's whisper seemed never-ending, accompanied by the suffocating air, echoing in Evan's ear, uttering strange and insane words.
These words made no sense, many were even senseless.
Evan kept telling himself not to listen, but the voice slipped uncontrollably into his ears, even echoing directly in his mind, forcing him to internalize it.
Bloodshot eyes, cold gaze, insane whispers, suffocated breath...
All of this mixed together, overwhelming Evan.
He only listened for a while and felt like he was about to go mad.
"This ruin has witnessed countless ancient and wicked crimes. These sins are completely beyond your imagination. Where you cannot notice, hopelessness is omnipresent, madness is wandering," it continued, "As you will see, lost sheep, life fades from the boy in front of you, but you can do nothing, you can only watch him die. In the end, you will be alone forever..."
"Shut up already!" exclaimed Evan.
He had not even thought about it. He simply waved his wand and cast a dark green light. This was the most sinister spell of dark magic he had learned from "Secrets of the Darkest Art". It was potent and had obvious side effects. Evan never truly intended to use this spell.
But he had to admit that the voice was driving him mad.
To silence it, he was willing to use malevolent dark magic.
Now, there was only one thought in his mind: to kill the monster.
Evan gasped and watched as his curse reached out to him. A cruel smile spread across his face. This time, he should surely be able to kill his foe...
In front of him, the dark green light pierced through the monster's body and vanished.
Evan frowned; the power of this spell should not be so weak.
He nervously waved his wand, and about five seconds later, the curse finally seemed to hit the wall, and the whole room shook.
A constant thunder rumbled, and a large amount of debris fell from above.
Evan did not duck but let the debris fall upon him. He raised his head like a madman to look at the monster above his head. It seemed unaffected at all.
It couldn't be, what on earth was happening here!
As before, its ruthless blood-red eyes stared at him, and the stones falling through its body did not even faze it.
"Your soul is suffering, but this is not the real you!" the whisper continued, "What can change a person's nature?"
Evan gasped violently, watching the monster, forcing himself to calm down.
He tried to ignore the constant voice in his mind and attempted to analyze the current situation.
Undoubtedly, the current situation was very peculiar. His curse had lost its effect, and this seemingly powerful monster did not seem eager to kill him.
Was it that it did not want to, or that it could not?
From the beginning until now, it did not move at all, just staying on the ceiling flailing its repulsive tentacles, gazing at him with those large and terrifying eyes.
Apart from its constant delirious whispers, it made no other movement.
Upon careful consideration, all of this was excessively abnormal.
Furthermore, based on previous assessments and information provided by Aragog, the monster now appeared very weakened and should not have much strength left.
Even if it were absorbing strength from Malfoy to recover, the time was too short to regain much...
