Chapter 8: Original Episode 0.1

Alexandra was mumbling. Her good mood was slowly fading after two full days working with Rodney McKay.

She took a deep breath and looked around the location they were working on. At a distance she could see the marines that Major Lorne had brought for this so called quick mission that was extending to more than just a couple of days.

Deep breath taken, her brown eyes fell on the pillar she was to work on later. However, Rodney McKay had other ideas and started to open it up without asking her.

"McKay!" She ran towards him. "I haven't started working on it yet."

"It's not that important." The scientist didn't even look at her, looking at the crystals inside. "You can take a look at it back in Atlantis."

"But I wanted to work on it here and not in an office. You do realize this is not Ancient or Wraith. It can mean…"

"Gibberish."

Alexandra was now quickly losing her patience.

"Do you always do this? Interrupt other people work for your own pleasure?" She narrowed her eyes.

"Pretty much, yeah."

"McKay!" John Sheppard's voice was heard not so far from them.

Rodney turned around, not expecting the Colonel to be on that location.

"What are you doing here, Sheppard? This is Lorne's mission."

"Apparently, I'm needed here to keep you in check." John said, stopping near them. "Are you slowing things down on purpose?" He looked between the two scientists. One was contempt and the other looked drained.

"No, I'm actually trying to make it quick but Dr. O'Neill here wants to examine this at this moment."

"It's a matter of preservation, Rodney."

"Well, what is important here is the energy source anyway. The rest is nonsense."

"How can you possibly know that?!" Alexandra was baffled. She knew McKay was difficult, but this was the most extreme she had seen him.

"I just do!"

"McKay!" John narrowed his eyes at the older scientist, who just shrugged.

"No. It's fine, John. It doesn't matter. I have other work to do." Alexandra walked away from them, resuming her work on the area that she had previsously been.

"What do you think you're doing, Rodney?" John turned to him, with a frown.

"My job."

"As does she. Why do you keep pushing her away? She's here to help."

"Oh, shut up, Sheppard. You're just trying to charm her. As usual."

"I am not." John stood in attention, watching McKay turn his back on him.

"Right. Because now that you heard that Alex and who knows who had broken up you would pass on that chance."

"What?" John looked at him, dumbfounded, not expecting that retort from his friend.

"As if you didn't know that." Rodney turned to the Colonel and saw his surprise. "How come you didn't know?"

"I don't snoop around other people's life, Rodney."

"Right." Rodney rolled his eyes and turned away from the Colonel.

John looked around the area, finding where Alexandra was hunched down over to the place she was working on.

"I'm sorry about Rodney." He said as soon as he got near her, watching her write on her notebook without sparing him a glance.

"It's fine." The way she said it made him think she was angry. John frowned. It was not usual of her.

"Are you okay?" He felt uncomfortable. He didn't know how to act with her like that. "Alex…"

"I'm fine… Didn't get much sleep last night. Rodney snores. A lot."

John snorted at the roll of her eyes. That was more like her.

"Do you want me to talk with him?"

"Nooo… That would only fuel him. And I don't need a flyboy play knight in shining armor just because McKay doesn't want me here."

"Hey!" John feigned being hurt, then turned serious, scooting down to her level. "You're wrong, you know? He does want you here. He likes, and needs, the competition. Especially regarding Ancient knowledge."

"Just so you know, I hate competition, Sheppard. Least of all with McKay." She sighed. "I hate him."

"That's the spirit." John chuckled. "I hate him too."

"I think I'm more used to work with Sam or Daniel."

The colonel watched her for a moment and was about to say something when he got interrupted through the radio.

"Yes, Major?"

[The gate is dialing, sir.]

"I'll be right there, Lorne. Ready the men." John stood, serious and commanding. "Gather your stuff, Alex. Take cover if you see a Wraith dart."

Alexandra nodded as she stood upon his words, seeing him leave.

All of a sudden, darts came from the gate area and shots were fired. She was about to go and try to help when she noticed McKay was out in the open, still gathering his own stuff.

"Rodney, c'mon! Leave it!"

"We need this for my research. We don't know if we'll be able to come back."

"Rodney!" She said, exasperated with him, since the reasons he didn't want to leave his work were the same as hers.

From one moment to the other, Alexandra pulled her P90, shooting to the sky as one of the darts was getting closer to their location.

However, nothing happened, except for the light that came upon them.

"Is everyone accounted for?" Col. Carter asked, watching her personnel come through the gate as it shut down after both Sheppard and Lorne came last.

"Yes, ma'am." Lorne said. "Except..." His anxious eyes found his C.O..

"Alex and Rodney. They were both taken by one of the darts." John said in a serious tone of voice.

Samantha's lips turned into a thin line.

"Let's talk."

Alexandra tried to keep her ears shut as she heard McKay mumble as they walked.

"You're lucky my shield worked and we were able to beam down from the dart." She said out of patience.

"They already know we are not there! Most likely. Probably. For sure!"

"We just need to find our way back to the campsite, Rodney."

"I just can't believe that Lorne didn't know there was a hive ship on the planet."

With a sigh, Alexandra kept walking, feeling her energy drain after her shield, the only thing the Ancients had left her with the last time she interacted with them, was used.

"What is wrong with you?" Rodney stopped next to her, seeing her lean forward with her hand pressing on her flank. There was a sharp a continuous sharpe pain annoying her.

"We need to take cover before nightfall." She said, trying to avoid the scientists eyes. "I won't be able to walk much further if I don't get some rest."

For the first time, Rodney turned serious and nodded.

"C'mon." He took her arm and placed it around his neck to help her walk.

"We didn't know there was a hive ship around, Ma'am."

"Why didn't we?" Sam looked between John and Lorne. Each was standing on either side of her office, as if there was a force pulling them apart. Which, in hindsight, was good, since she could feel that if there was a sudden a move, they would explode.

"It must have arrived during the night. The censors only picked it up when the darts didn't go back to the gate after the culling." John explained, jaw tense.

"We need to go back, Ma'am." Lorne said, resolute. "Dr. McKay and Dr. O'Neill are my responsibility."

The leader of Atlantis looked at the anxious Major. She nodded.

"Well, at least Alex is with McKay…"

"If you think McKay is going to protect her, Col. Carter..." Sheppard mentioned.

"Oh, I was not talking about him. She will be the one doing the protecting." Samantha Carter stood with a knowing look. "Perhaps a small team is best, Colonel, Major. We don't want the Wraith alert of our rescue mission."

John nodded, curious abour Samantha's words. To be honest, he had never seen Alex in combat, but she had gotten up to the Major post for some reason, right?

"Don't worry, McKay. If I die you don't have to worry about me anymore."

Rodney, who was making a sort of a makeshift bed after they had found a spot for the night in a cave, looked up at her with a frown.

"What do you mean?"

"C'mon, Rodney. You don't want me in Atlantis."

"Where could you possibly got that idea?"

Alexandra gave him a look from where she was keeping an watchful eye with a P90 in her hands.

"The way you talk to me. The way you explain things to me as if I don't understand them. You do realize what I am, right? And how hard I worked to be here?"

The older scientist looked her over for a moment. And sighed.

"Why now? Why come to Atlantis now? I know you weren't ordered to come here."

"Really? You think what? That I have an ulterior motive to be here?" Alexandra couldn't understand.

"So?" He asked impatiently.

"Rodney, c'mon… Don't you think I needed some space after everything that happened in the last few months on Earth?"

Hearing her, remembering some of the reports he had read about the Ori and Adria, Rodney ended up nodded.

"Hold on. John's right, isn't he? Or was… were you afraid that I was competing with you for a place… your place in the Atlantis science team?"

"Weren't you?"

Alexandra snorted, tiredly.

"God, no, Rodney. Do I look like I can lead anyone?" A flash of pain struck her upon remembering what the Asgards had taught her. "First of all, I am no expert on Ancients. Second, between you and Daniel, he's the expert. Between you and me, I'll give you the title because you've been in Atlantis longer."

Rodney listened to her. What had he been thinking?

"I'm sorry, okay? It's stronger than me." He sighed, being truthful.

Suddenly there was a sound coming from the outside of the cave. Alexandra was up in a second, with her P90 in her hand and Rodney behind her.

"We have to go." She whispered, looking around.

"We can't..."

The woman pulled him outside the cave as she felt a bomb go through the entrance.

The pair was thrown onto the ground as the blast hit them. She moaned in pain. Her shield was not yet ready to sustain something like that.

"Dr. McKay." They heard a voice, known to Rodney.

"Michael." Rodney frowned, standing up, being immediately grabbed by Wraith guards. "What do you want?"

"Who is your friend?" The Wraith looked Alexandra over as she stood with difficulty.

"None of your business." Rodney said, taking a step forward.

"Alexandra O'Neill." Alexandra said, standing up. "And I've heard of you. The Wraith turned human." Her eyes scanned him.

At the mention, Michael groaned and stepped closer to her.

"An unfortunate mistake made by your kind."

Amazed by the Wraith, Alexandra stared at him, not afraid of what he might do.

"A mistake that could have led to something." She simply said.

Michael gave her a sneer. He held his hand up.

"Don't you dare, Michael!" Rodney tried to pull on his guards.

Alexandra was confused until the moment Michael's hand connected with her chest and she felt air explode out of her lungs.

The moment lasted a second as Michael immediately took his hand off her and looked at the scientist, surprised.

"Bring her." The half Wraith ordered, turning around to where the personnel ship was.

"What?!" Rodney squealed.

"I guess we won't be needing you after all, Dr. McKay. Give my best to Col. Sheppard. And Teyla."

Two Wraith footsoldiers grabbed Alexandra by her arms. She barely had energy to fight as she saw one of the others knock Rodney out cold.

"Where are you taking me?"

"Somewhere no one can find us, Alexandra." Michael savored the name. "Do some experiences. That's all."

All of a sudden, P90's shots were heard. She fell to the ground, groaning in pain, not caring about what was happening.

A shadow fell on her and she opened her eyes. Looking up, she recognized some of Atlantis marines. She sighed as she turned her body up.

"Hey, doc." His voice sounded relieved.

"Hey, flyboy." Her eyes found hazel ones and she felt like she could stop fighting.

When Alexandra opened her eyes, she saw John Sheppard sitting next to her bed. In the Atlantis infirmary.

"Hey." She croaked out, moving her body to a more comfortable position.

"Morning, doc. How are you feeling?" John stood to get closer.

"Much better. What are you doing here?"

"Keeping you company. For a moment you gave us all a heart attack. Especially Rodney. Did he give you a hard time?" He pointed to a sleeping Rodney in the other bed.

"Nothing that I couldn't handle. And I think we came to an understanding."

"It seems like you two bonded." His smile was playful.

"Shut up, Sheppard." But she smiled at his chuckle.

"So, first encounter with the Wraith. And Michael, nonetheless."

"He's... disturbing. Reading about them and actually deal with them is quite different."

"True. But listen, all Wraith are disturbing."

"Perhaps. By the way, where's Evan? I wanted to speak with him."

"Evan?" John raised his brow, confused.

"Major Lorne."

"Ah. He's somewhere. He already heard a reprehension from me."

"You didn't! John… He did his best. He didn't know."

"Mhmm… He should have known there was a Wraith hive ship nearby. And how come you treat him on a first name basis?"

"He's my friend. We worked together at the SCG." Alexandra offered. "Anyway, what are you doing here? Shouldn't you be doing your job, Sheppard?"

"I am. Keeping a close eye on one of my scientists." John gave her a wink. "My shift is already over." John sat back down with a shrug.

"Then you probably have better things to do."

"Not really."

"Don't you have a date or something like that?" She narrowed her eyes, teasing him.

"Nope."

"John, c'mon… Just go. I'm fine. I'm just going back to sleep."

The pilot sighed.

"Fine. I can see my company is not wanted." He stood, practically pouting.

"You know... That cute little flyboy pout doesn't work on me."

"Ha! At least you know it's cute. And don't call me that."

They were falling back to their usual banter.

"John?" She made him turn as he walked way. "I know what you're doing."

"And what's that?" He placed his hands in his pockets.

"I know my uncle's work when I see it. He asked you to keep an eye on me. The same way he asked Evan. That's why he asked Sam to place me in his team."

"I think Gen. O'Neill is just worried." John said.

"I know. And you or I won't tell him that I found that out, deal?"

"Deal." John nodded, reluctantly. "But now you owe me a beer."

"For what?" Alexandra raised her brow.

"Well, I do need a bribe to not write in my report that you almost died." There was a playful glint in his eyes.

"I didn't almost died… Oh, you're mean, Sheppard." Alexandra narrowed her eyes.

"Payback, O'Neill." He winked.

"Fine, fine." She sighed, dramatically. "If I have to."

"I'll hold you onto that. Now, rest up, doc."

"I will. Once you leave."

With a nod and one last look, John left Alexandra with her own thoughts.
