So I'm back with an update, yes this isn't a oneshot where the creator just forgets this for years. Please let me know what you think in reviews and what you want to see in future chapters.
"Milord? Why did you form an alliance with the wolf prince of the eastern tribe and offer your half sister as payment? Surely there are more prolific clans to choose from and worthier allies?" Jaken questioned. He had never questioned his masters intentions before, he had never faltered, never made mistakes and the results had always succeeded. He was a proud and powerful DaiYokai, he was from a long lineage of warlords, his growth in power and influence was unrivalled, yet he didn't understand why he still involved himself with his half sister. There were people far better suited to keep in his life, people who made him look better politically and aesthetically. She was a wild, untamed, impolite brat who caused him nothing but grief, she showed him no respect, many other powerful clans had offered gifts and their hand in marriage to InuYuki, asking her brother for her as their wife. Many whom would be able to control her, teach her lessons and give her the wake up call she so desperately needed. But he had chosen a wild mountainous tribe of fellow canine demons but of a lesser breed, the wolf pack rather than a stronger more elegant demon. Prince Kouga had a reputation, he was tactical, educated, a good leader, he was a strong provider and a skilled fighter. However, much like his father Kouga lacked a hatred for humans, though he protected his tribe from both human and demon threats. He was a curious case indeed. Though he had never questioned his master before, he was curious of his decision.
Sesshoumaru stared into the distance, as the new lord of the western lands, inheriting their fathers title, responsibilities and political duties. Meaning he was also responsible for the care of his younger half sister, despite his dislike of her. He had been closest to their father and to carry on their traditions and a new era of Inu-Daiyokai. He had no time nor interest in a romantic partner himself, no woman fit his interest as a suitable mate and it felt trivial, he had no lovers, no companions, no tedious romantic ties. His father had mated with his mother for many centuries before divorcing her amicably to marry the human princess Izayoi. A commoner who found wealth and became a lords daughter, she was indeed lovely for a human and had swayed his fathers heart, but she had no political education, she was a private person nor could she fight in battle. She was a weakling, but she was not to be underestimated according to his father. Touga had been smitten with her and wed her instantly, birthing InuYasha his half brother. That woman had led to his fathers demise, as soon as he fell in love with her, his story had come to an end protecting her. He had no interest in sacrificing his life for a weakling. InuYuki had spent her life causing problems, reminding him of their fathers death, of that woman. Though her demon form strongly resembled their father, her lightly tanned skin, the same silver hair and intense golden eyes. She had her mothers heart, that stubbornness, causing problems for him wherever she went, she was a weakling, a crybaby, a disgrace to their family lineage. Though she had power, she had no idea of how to wield it, how to reach her full potential and how to become a proud demon, let alone how to act like a princess. She had run away from home when she was young, before she came of age, deciding to strike out on her own after he disowned her. She found herself in danger and mischief, causing rumours and ruckus in her wake. Unaware of hows she was embarrassing herself, him and her stepmother. At least by marrying Kouga, she could continue the demonic heritage of demon blood although mixed, half DaiYokai, a quarter wolf demon and a quarter human, the lesser the human blood of their offspring the better. The child would be either wolf looking or Inu-Yokai in appearance, fangs, pointed ears, tanned skin and canine appearance. Meaning when they did lose their demonic power, it wouldn't be as frequently as their mother, at the very least once a year. Less shame as brought by their mother.
"I will not allow her to insult the family lineage any longer, she cannot run around on escapades and embarrass me any longer. She will settle with a suitable partner and learn her responsibilities to this family" Sesshoumaru warned. They tolerated each other at best, despite being family neither of them behaved in an affectionate manner towards the other. But she was his responsibility and he would care for her as he saw fit. She was a princess, a lady, of noble royal blood, even by a half, she needed to act like it. Her actions, her choices, her behaviour, it all reflected upon them, the rumours would bounce back at them. She had no idea of how reckless she was being and how frustrating it was. She was insulting them by marrying a human, a priest of all people.
Jaken bowed his head respectfully "Aye milord"
InuYuki gazed at Kichirou longingly, her ears drooped and a pout evident on her face, she had no idea of how utterly adorable she looked in his eyes right now. Her heart was on her sleeve for the world to see. She knew he had fought enemies before, prior to her becoming a part of his life he had faced dangers on his own and handled them without failure, he had earned his reputation for his strength and experience. He had innately powerful spiritual abilities, a pure heart free of corruption, he valued his people and his duty above all. He was respected and admired, he was the most wonderful person she had ever met. But she still worried for him, he wasn't immortal, she'd lost enough people to know, he could still be harmed and he could still be killed. "I should come with you, thanks to being involved with me you have more enemies" she pressed, at least then she could guard him, she could watch out for surprise attacks. She knew her father had enemies who came after her out of spite, Sesshoumaru had sent enough over the years. Kichirou had formed enemies of his own too, their enemies would now come after each other, trying to kill their beloved. She'd been hated her entire life for merely existing since birth, but she would protect Kichirou from such a fate with every fibre of her being.
Kichirou smiled, reaching out to caress her head affectionately, playing with her ears "I had enemies before I fell for you InuYuki, though your concern for me warms my heart. The village needs your protection, I'm relying on you" he reminded her. He had always known the threats, dangers and responsibilities of his duty, many priests, priestesses and monks rarely lived past a certain age due to the risks of their careers. Whether it was strain on their bodies, wounds, sickness and more, their lives were known for being short. But with her by his side he had protection. But now he had something else to fight for, someone else to protect, she was his reason to survive the battle. Many of the village children were fond of her and they would need her help. There were many village tasks that she would need to aid in, many people still requested her mothers liver potion, though she didn't realise it, many people relied on her for help.
InuYuki softened but relented, she knew he was right, she remembered the first night she met him when she was in human form, hiding in a tree after he collapsed after battling demons. Laid in the mud unconscious and exhausted, watching over him curiously until help came and she could escape into the darkness. He had fought with his life until it nearly killed him, at her mercy had she been in demon form, instead she let him live. She had never told anyone of his weakness, the same as he had protected her secrets. "You better come home safe you hear? I'll be mad if you come back with so much as a bruise!" she warned.
Kichirou chuckled "I promise", he knew that if he came home with a single injury she would be fretting for weeks, following him around like his shadow. He leaned forward, pulling her closer to him, breathing in her perfume, memorising her shape and warmth, until he returned home, her silver hair tickling his cheek. He wanted to remember this moment, holding her in his arms as he headed out for battle "I love you InuYuki" he whispered. She was worth coming home to, knowing she would always welcome him no matter if he was bringing medicine, fighting demons or helping the sick and injured. InuYuki felt her cheeks heat, her heart fluttering, he said the sweetest things to her, gentle words of affirmation that made her feel so loved and safe. He kissed her cheek fondly, before parting ways, approaching his horse with a quiver of arrows and his bow, as well as necessities he may need.
InuYuki watched longingly as he departed the village, her amber eyes filled with sadness and her heart longing, part of her wanted to scream at him not to leave. She knew she couldn't protect him from everything, but she knew firsthand of how dangerous and cruel the world could be. She hated being apart from him, the loneliness that consumed her in his absence, like a piece of her was missing.
"Milady InuYuki, many of us have field work to tend to this afternoon, would you be so kind as to entertain the children? They are so very fond of you" a villager suggested. It would keep her distracted, put her mind at ease and would be of great help to them. Many of them loved catching frogs, foraging for mushrooms, hearing her stories, playing catch and more with her. She was so attentive and patient with them, she would make a fine mother someday. They would be safe in her care, assuring no harm came to them, her keener senses would pick up on their scent and footsteps. InuYuki blinked, when she first arrived at the village, she would have never been handed such a responsibility, so much had changed. Kaede had his training at the temple and would be gone most of the day, though he would show up again soon. She may as well try and have some fun while Kichirou was gone. She nodded patiently, before following the villager to find the children, stretching in boredom.
InuYasha sat in a nearby field with the children, surrounded by flowers, a ball, and other forms of entertainment. Children were so easily distracted by the world around them, they could make anything a game. The childish innocence that blinded them of the daunting future ahead of them. Many played ball nearby, catch or some merely sat near her for company. They behaved, didn't cause much trouble and didn't bully one another, knowing she would be upset if they did. So she tried to make them all feel involved, while keeping them entertained as their carer for the afternoon. Carefully styling her hair, asking her questions while she observed the others. It had taken so long for the children to trust her as they did now, learning she wasn't a monster, that she meant no harm to the village, she wasn't their enemy. Now she was one of them, now she was family, someone they cared for. The villagers even suggested she babysit them, that they trusted their children's care with her, something she still found hard to believe. She remembered the first time she appeared in the village, many kept their distance, whispered about her and saw her as an enemy. She was used to their judgemental stares, their whispers, their gossip, she had faced it all her life, nothing had changed. But in time she earned their trust, they welcomed her and came to love her as they did Kichirou. He had entrusted her with such an important task because he knew it made her happy, he knew she had always wanted to belong somewhere and now she did. She knew it warmed Kichirou's heart to see her bonding with them, protecting them, nurturing them. Making him wish for children of his own with her, she blushed at the thought.
She hated thinking of her future, knowing how many people tried to involve themselves. It was bad enough her brother and stepmother were both pressing her on marriage, children and how she had humiliated the family by having an affair with a human. Neither of them approved of her life choices. Inukimi was not nearly as cold towards her as Sesshoumaru was, though she wasn't exactly a loving stepmother either. She understood why, she was the child of her husbands second wife, a reminder of the woman her husband had remarried and left her for. She had given InuYuki food and shelter in her castle after her mother passed ensuring she would be raised as the royalty she was. She made sure she had servants to watch over her and keep her out of trouble, making sure her son didn't bully InuYuki. But she pressed InuYuki into ladylike lessons, etiquette, flower arrangement, dressing like a princess, learning politics, how to compose herself and act like a noble. She taught her how to do makeup, she had taught her about her lineage and even prepared kimonos for her to wear around the castle. InuYuki had grown bored with the lessons, fallen asleep, become frustrated, and often had a hard time focusing. She appreciated that Inukimi put such effort and care into her upbringing, she had no reason to. But it wasn't the sort of life she wanted, however, she excelled at combat training, medicine lessons and literature. She had later inherited her fathers sword the Tetsuigha.
Inukimi had always seen InuYuki as a child, never wanting to involve her in such complicated political matters such as marriage until she came of age. She knew her stepdaughter had faced trauma's growing up from a young age that deeply effected her. She needed to heal and grow before she could make such mature decisions with her life. But was offended when she learned InuYuki had not only mated outside of marriage, but with a human priest of all people. She never fully trusted InuYuki for her human blood, but she was one of them through her father, she saw her as an equal but didn't treat her special, she was as hard on her as she was on her son. She was angered that InuYuki had risked so much by allowing herself to fall for the enemy, but also someone who didn't influence or prosper the family in any way. They had a complicated relationship, but she would rather be in the presence of her stepmother than her half brother. But she knew Kimi would prefer her to marry and mate with Kouga over a human, agreeing with Sesshoumaru arranging this political alliance. She wished Kichirou was here to help chase away these intrusive thoughts.
"Milday?" a voice questioned, snapping her from her thoughts, realising she had forgotten all about the children, she'd been spacing out more than before. The children watched her with looks of worry, empathy burning from their eyes, something was bothering her but she remained silent on what it was. She didn't want to worry them, this was something they didn't need to be involved with.
"Yes?" she stammered, confused as to whom was speaking to her, she had been so far away she had forgotten where she was. So many thoughts racked her brain, clouding her judgement and consuming her, she was so stressed. But she wouldn't let the children see her like that, she couldn't let the children know what truly bothered her.
"You miss lord Kichirou don't you?" the child stated, they were always together, always flirting, always bonding. They made medicine together, helped tend to the villagers and repair their homes. They were a team as well as lovers, always working together. It was evident that Lord Kichirou cared greatly for her, she was special to him and everyone in the village could see it.
InuYuki blushed, she hated how perceptive the human children were, she could never lie to them as they would reveal the truth, seemingly knowing her every thought. Yes she was worried, though he returned safely to her, she always worried about him being targeted. She had been attacked for being different her whole life, but she didn't need Kichirou being dragged into it. Now that her brother knew she was romantically involved with him, how far would he got to tear them apart? Anything to ruin her perfect life. The first man she had ever opened her heart to, ever trusted, ever truly loved, losing him was a feeling she never wanted to experience. Now that Kouga, the eastern wolf prince was involved, her life was only going to become more chaotic. Sesshoumaru and Kimi would undoubtedly spread gossip of their engagement among the demon realm. Stories of her engagement to the wolf prince, the alliance of the wolf and and Inu-DaiYokai clans, their marriage. She sighed "Lord Kichirou can handle himself, he's a strong priest who's battled many demons before and triumphed, however, he's not like me, he's not as powerful, he can't bounce back as easily. I'm worried of him being hurt" she explained. Humans were weaker than demons, even half breeds, they couldn't bounce back or heal from wounds the same way. Their lives were painfully short and life passed so quickly for them. She never wanted anything to happen to Kichirou, not if she could help it, she would always act as his sword and shield, until her dying breath.
The child blinked before smiling "So that means yes?" they teased, she was lonely, she was deeply in love with him, the village felt strange without his presence and they all felt it. InuYuki wasn't as mean as she came across, she was just stubborn, she was truly a kind person.
InuYuki blushed before huffing, pinching their cheek lightly, she wasn't about to be teased by a child, she ha a reputation to uphold "Don't be a smart-ass" she scoffed. The child mocked a whine and burst into laughter, knowing she had been caught out on a lie. She continued to watch the children play, but a sense of fondness filled her, watching these children naively enjoy their adolescence the way she wished she could have. But also reminding her of the future children she would have with Kichirou. Suddenly, she stiffened, it seemed her peace was not to last as an uninvited guest had made themselves known, picking up the familiar scent of a demon. She growled lowly, why had he come back? Was this a new game he had chosen to entertain himself? Hadn't he learned his lesson? Did he mean to scare the children? She stood protectively in front of the children, bearing her fangs. Times like this she was glad she took up fighting instead of ladylike traditions like InuKimi suggested, "What are you? My stalker?" she snapped.
A familiar whirlwind appeared, glowing blue eyes and a mischievous smile, she was always so stubborn but he loved that. He never wanted her to change, she was so perfect. Kouga appeared before her, grinning playfully. He had noticed the priest had abandoned her in the village, going off on an adventure by himself, leaving her to protect the village and tend to the children alone. He had hoped to flirt with her, tease her and possibly play games with her to see if she could be honest. However, watching how gentle, nurturing and playful she was with the children, it stirred something in him. Making him think of how she would bond with her own children someday. She was so different from any other girl he had crossed paths with, she was so exhilarating, free spirited and unconventional. She followed her own path, she was true to her heart and never put up false airs. "Nice to see you again princess" he smiled. The children panicked, hiding behind Inyuki quickly, panicking at the sight of a rogue demon appearing before them. All of them watching Kouga hesitantly, watching him with fear, reservation and curiosity. Who was this demon and how did he know InuYuki? Was he going to kidnap them or her?
"Seriously, you need to get a life, following me around the village" she scoffed, ever since he had shown up here he had caused mischief. The villagers were uneasy by his presence, wondering if he was stalking them out. If he planned on stealing livestock, kidnapping anyone, harassing them or making demands. Though he was harmless they had reason to be worried now that her brother was involved.
"I mean, without the priest around you lack the spiritual ward, your demonic aura won't be enough to ward them off alone. At least with me around you'll have twice the protection" Kouga reminded her. The barrier he formed around the village was now lowered, other demons would become braver and try attacking. The only reason they hadn't was because of InuYuki's demonic presence. Now that he was here, their combined demonic auras would ward off any rogue demons who got any ideas about attacking. He knew this village meant a lot to her, he knew how upset she would be if anything happened to it or the villagers.
InuYuki pouted, her day just kept getting worse, it felt like all her bad luck just kept piling up lately and she couldn't escape it. What had she done to deserve this sort of thing? Most women would be delighted by two men fighting for her affection, but is just stressed her out and frustrated her. She hated to admit it but he was right, she still had enemies out there and without Kichirou many would get braver. At least with the eastern wolf prince, they would be protected, she could tolerate him for a brief period. She retracted her claws, still guarding the children but lessened her anger and defensive stance. "Fine, just don't cause me any trouble" he growled, she wasn't in the mood for any of his games, she didn't need more gossip getting back to her in-laws. As long as he didn't try to flirt with her, harass her or seduce her while she was alone, she didn't those kinds of rumours spreading around. The villagers assuming she had abandoned Kichirou for her own kind, that she was plotting against him or having an affair. None of which was true.
Kouga smiled, she seemed worried about something, hidden thoughts consumed her mind and made her worry "You have my word". Someone as pretty and gentle hearted as her didn't deserve to worry. She deserved to be showered with affection and loyalty, to be made to feel as special as she was perceived. All he wanted was to keep her company, bond with her and understand her world. He wanted to understand her dynamic in the village, her skills, her talents, her hobbies, he wanted to know about the Inu-DaiYokai princess who would be his wife. In such a short period of time he had learned so much about her, she loved flowers, she was stubborn, she loved children and she harboured a soft, empathetic heart under her cold demeanour. He was excited to see what else he would uncover about her, what secrets she held deep in her heart, he was falling even harder for her.
InuYuki relented, before kneeling to face the frightened children, she needed to calm them, they were still shaking, wide eyed and nervous.
"Milady, who is that man?"
"He's a demon isn't he?"
"He's scary"
"Is he going to hurt us?"
"What does he want with you?"
InuYuki could sense their fear, their innate aversion of demons due to the attacks on the village, the fear in their eyes, desperate for answers, planting seeds of doubt in their mind. Due to their experience with violent, hateful and wicked demons, they assumed they were all monsters. The divide between species was strong, ignorance and hatred ran deep. If she could influence them, change their views on demons, she could make them aware that not all demons were monsters, the same way they once looked at her. "That man is a wolf, a mountain man who has crawled out of his dark cave to cause mischief" she explained. Kouga pouted, his ear twitching in annoyance as he overheard her conversation to the children, she made him sound like a goblin or a troll. He knew the children were afraid of him for good reason, but she didn't have to make him sound so creepy.
"He lives in a cave?" a child gasped, didn't he get cold? How did he find food? Did he sleep in there all day?
InuYuki nodded, the caves would protect them during intense weather, shielding him from the worst of it. Wolves were used to dealing with the worst of nature, overcoming it and adapting. They knew how to hunt and forage, they made a skill of it. "He won't hurt us, he knows that if he tries that I or Kichirou will kick his ass. He's become bored and seeks to relieve his boredom by harassing me" she explained. Kouga had been offered her hand in marriage for political reasons, but for whatever reason she couldn't understand was different than how she expected. She had faced so many cruel, narcissistic and prideful demons before. He didn't hate humans, he wasn't a brute, he didn't mindlessly attack humans for sport, he wasn't bloodthirsty and he wasn't corrupt. He was a mischievous, playful but gentle natured and awkward person, with a mutual stubborn side, he enjoyed teasing her but not maliciously, he wasn't a bully. He enjoyed making her smile and making her laugh, he had a good heart and was softer than he admitted. He wasn't the jerk she expected him to be, but she didn't fully trust him yet.
Kouga felt a twang of pain, he knew the rumours that demons were beasts who hated humans, often tormenting them, being an outsider he would be seen as a threat and an enemy. The last thing he wanted was for the villagers to assume he was getting some form of amusement out of visiting their village and causing them grief. He was merely bonding with his promised mate, getting to know her. They were legally to be wed after all, he wasn't doing anything wrong. But he would never harm any of these children, they were the same age as many pups from his pack, he would never lay a hand on any of them.
One of the children approached Kouga with a suspicious expression, trying to seem as brave as possible, ready to start a fight "Do you wanna hurt Miss InuYuki?" they demanded.
Kouga was impressed by the confidence of this child, they were all prepared to protect her despite being weaker than him. He knelt so he was on a better eye level with the children "I came to your village, because I was drawn here after learning about a pretty half breed who lived in your village. Her big brother promised me a bride in compromise that he wouldn't hurt my people. But it just so happens that I met her and fell in love with her. But she doesn't like me very much" he explained. He had learned from her brother that she had decided to remain here, making it her territory for whatever reason, it did seem absurd a royal blooded half breed living among commoners, let alone humans. He had come into this blindly, he had no idea of what to expect with a bride to be, he wouldn't risk the safety of his people, but he wouldn't back down from this. He would make her his mate, his bride. They would have a future together, whether she wanted to accept it or not.
"You think Miss InuYuki is pretty?" one of the other children gasped, everyone else in the village had always kept away from her and knew she was in a relationship with Kichirou. Other men found her pretty? Did this mean other men would ask to marry her too?
"She's the prettiest girl I've ever seen" Kouga confirmed, no woman had ever met had made his heart race the way she did, nobody had ever gotten under his skin before. He'd met all sorts of women, human, other demons, all of them bored him. They tried too hard to impress him, some willing to act as obedient wives rather than his equal, many just wanted to use his political power. But he had never met a DaiYokai dog demon before, never one as lovely as she was. Her royal blood and potent bloodline were prominent and made her lovelier than anything he could have expected. Spending his life with her, he couldn't think of anything better, having this strong beautiful woman by his side.
"He thinks you're pretty" one of the children confirmed, causing InuYuki to blush profusely.
"I'm not a bully, I'm not a monster, I don't want to hurt anyone, I just want to get to know her, maybe make her my wife" Kouga grinned. He had never started fights without a good reason, when people robbed from his clans food storage, when they attacked his guards, the children. When they intruded on his territory, insulted his people. When humans invaded his land, killed his wolves for pelts and threatened the safety of his people he had attacked. He would protect his clan with his life, no matter the threat, he never attacked villagers, he never attacked at random, he didn't enjoy ceaseless violence. InuYuki hated war and violence as much as himself, she had endured enough of it growing up, which gave them something to bond over. His people had been targeted by other demons before, they had taken damage and had to protect themselves, sometimes asking other tribes for help. They always looked out for one another. InuYuki would be one of them, anyone who insulted her would be insulting his pack.
The children's eyes widened in surprise, gossip escaping their lips with vigour "An affair! this is a love affair! Miss InuYuki, you have two men in love with you!" one of the older children stated.
"Isn't she with Lord Kichirou?"
"She's so popular! Because she's pretty!"
"I'm jealous"
InuYuki blushed, though their words were harmless she was still embarrassed regardless, she couldn't remember the last time she was this popular or a topic of discussion. She had never craved peace and quiet more than she had right now. She didn't plan on cheating on Kichirou, she didn't plan on abandoning him or the village, but somehow her personal life had become more complicated. She wasn't unfaithful, she had never given any implication that she was, many of the humans of the village had their own issues with their marriages. But the villagers may take this into speculation of her future intentions. "Kichirou had to go on a hunt, some demons are tormenting travellers and another village, I've been left to protect the village and the children. I'm guardian until he comes back, meaning I have to be cautious of you. So don't take it personally, but I'm protecting my home" she explained. She didn't trust him not to get into mischief and if the villagers saw another demon lurking around the village they would become anxious. The last thing she needed was the villagers assuming she was incompetent. "So long as you behave, you can help watch over the children and check the perimeters for any lurkers and maybe I'll send you off with some medicine for your tribe" she warned. She would happily give them some of her mothers liver potion and some of Kichirou's herbal medicines, but not too many.
Kouga softened, he could understand the strain she was under, though it angered him how easily the villagers could be swayed to turn on her purely because of some outside drama happening. She was protecting this village, the people, despite being an outsider and many still being wary of her, she still gave them her loyalty, it was admirable. They didn't deserve her, she had proven herself loyal to them and that she wasn't the monster they believed demons to be. Much like himself, she would do anything to protect the people she cared for. "Hey, you had a life here before I came into the picture, I won't judge you for that. But I wont allow anyone to hurt you, human or demon" Kouga expressed. She was his future mate, future wife, her wellbeing was his priority, once she was his, he would treat her as she had deserved. With all of the loyalty, adoration, affection and devotion she deserved. He knew her brother cared little for her happiness, so to spite him Kouga would assure she was never miserable. He knew her brother didn't respect her or see her as worthy of equality, he tolerated her at best. If he could protect her from her brother and anyone else who sought to harm her, he would be relieved.
InuYuki blushed, she was finding herself swayed further by the day by his charms, he just found ways to get inside of her heart. She had never believed that another demon could ever be kind to her. It changed her perspective of humans and demons, both men affecting her in different ways. "You're helping me babysit wolf" she huffed, he wasn't getting out of this.
"Can I have a piggyback?" one of the kids begged. Kouga scooped up some of the children, letting them climb onto his back causing them to squeal in delight. He was more than used to children in his pack asking for favours and wanting to play. Though they lacked the strength of the pups back home, they were equally as energetic.
InuYuki collected some of the smaller children and holding them on her shoulders and back, gripping onto her robes, hair and body for support. She knew all this excitement would tire them out and they would sleep soundly. Meaning they would be less hassle for their parents later. Kouga ran around the flowery field, kicking petals while she watched, the kids collectively squealing with excitement. The kids were already becoming attached, curious of their new visitor and hoping to make a friend out of him. She had to admit seeing his softer side melted her heart, allowing her to lower her suspicions a little "He's innately paternal, but I suppose that's the canine in him" she reflected. Wolves were pack species, a mentality of a pecking order but fiercely loyal to their clan, they got revenge on those who wronged them and never forgot their fallen pack members. If she had chosen Kouga, if she had met him before Kichirou, what would he be like as a mate? As a father? She shook her head of these thoughts, sighing heavily.
InuYuki watched as the children returned to the village, to the awaiting arms of their parents, bright smiles and stories to tell. Today had gone better than she thought, her loneliness had been alleviated and she had been able to cast aside her worries. She had to admit Kouga wasn't bad company when he wasn't flirting with her all the time, it made him more approachable. "You're good with kids" Kouga smiled, the softness she showed around them, how willingly she protected them, how she smiled from her heart. He wondered if she had always desired children of her own, or a family.
InuYuki blushed, she was still getting used to the fact that she was lowering her guard around Kouga. She hadn't done that around anyone in a long time "Kids are innocent, they are swayed by the influence of their parents, they don't know better. It's the adults who are fuelled by hatred and ignorance" she reflected. Many kids had been cruel to her growing up, but because their parents told them she was evil and wicked, some had wanted to play with her but their parents chased her off. She had always been alone. The last person to be kind to her before she met Kichirou was her mother, the person who brought her into the world. After that she had been alone, though raised by her in-laws, she had felt like an outsider among them. Here she felt welcomed, appreciated and protected.
"You'd make a good mum" he hummed, he could imagine how loving and nurturing she would be. She had a kind heart, the way she handled the children, she would dote on her own children. He admitted that seeing her like that made him want to have children with her all the more. Knowing she would be a fine mother, the children they would have. She would be a good mentor, strict but kind, she would never let them suffer. Envisioning a future with her, the pair they would be, it gave him butterflies.
InuYuki blushed, someday it would happen but it was too early to say, she wasn't prepared for that sort of responsibility. "Yeah well, if me and Kichirou ever consider it, the next generation of Inu-Yokai will continue".She wished her mother could see how happy she was, that her parents could see their future grandchildren. She had always wanted a family with Kichirou, he was the only man she would ever consider having a family with. Knowing she would be loved, as would their children. All her mother had wanted was for her to be accepted, loved and felt guilt at the life she had placed upon her daughter.
Kouga hardened, he was surprised that despite all the hardships she had faced in life she still harboured optimism. She had forged her own path in life, but she wouldn't be allowed to keep it. He hated to say something so cruel to her, even if it was true, shattering her dreams and delusions. "You think that asshole will acknowledge a quarter Dai-Yokai as family? Hell, you think he'd let you carry that guys child?" he pressed. They would find ways to prevent such a thing, regardless of how much it would hurt InuYuki. He knew InuYuki loved Kichirou, he was deeply embedded in her heart and soul, they were soulmates anyone could see that. But Sesshoumaru would take offence to the next generation of their family being pathetically weak and mostly human. Which was why he chose Kouga, mostly demon offspring and similar in species. He hated the thought of tearing them apart, even with his feeling for her, the fact that by making her his wife he was ripping her away from the man she loved. But she was have a more accepted life with him, at least her brother would be less hostile and acknowledge her, because her children would be mostly demon.
InuYuki flinched, her eyes becoming cold and bitter, why did he have to ruin the moment by reminding her of her fate? She had almost forgotten the reason he was here was because of her brother. She felt sick just hearing his name "Sesshoumaru has never treated me as family, he made that choice when he abandoned me as a child. He only see's me as a political tool" she snapped. He had never acted as a brother to her, he had never acted like family towards her. He only used his title when it suited him.
Kouga took a shaky breath, his cheeks flushing lightly, god why was he sweating suddenly? "You know, if we mated, I wouldn't treat you like that, you'd be welcomed in my pack. Nobody would treat you lesser because of your human blood, you would be respected and acknowledged as a princess, of noble birth. You'd never know hardships or torment and you would be treated as one of us. Our children would be the next generation of pack leaders and of noble blood..." he reflected. His people already knew about her, they had heard all of his stories about her and had fallen in love with her. Ginta and Hikaku were his wingmen, they were preparing for her arrival. Many had even been making a kimono for her, traditional wolf talismans and jewellery. All of them couldn't wait to meet her. He was already prince, though his nobility couldn't compare to her ranking in the demon realm, but she would be safe, she would be honoured and she would never be mistreated. She would be welcomed in meetings with the pack, she would be accepted as princess, all her needs and wellbeing would be met. She would have robes, armour, a kimono and more made for her, honouring her position in the wolf tribe as their princess. Gifts would be sent, she would be spoiled endlessly which she wouldn't be prepared for. She would be cared for in every way possible.
InuYuki shifted, over the years she had become perceptive, able to tell when someone was trying to manipulate her. She knew he was being genuine, Kouga would never mistreat her and he hadn't given her any reason so far to think otherwise. He would make her happy, he would give her a good life and treat her as an equal partner and he would never control her life.
"But... given I'm a wolf and you're a half Daiyokai, if our child could transform like your brother, they would be smaller in stature as a wolf/Inu-DaiYokai transformation" he laughed. Their combined bloodlines would be interesting indeed, they wouldn't be tiny by any means, but in size compared to Sesshoumaru, they would be smaller. They would be bigger than the wolves of their pack that was for damn sure. He wondered if they would have his blue eyes or her amber, would their pelt be black like his or white like hers? Imagining that Inu-DaiYokai wolf hybrid peaked his curiosity.
InuYuki hummed, she couldn't help but imagine the life they would have together, allowing her mind to wander. She would live in a mountainous area, in caves, in a pack, she would be among the wilderness, away from the peace of this village. With a ranking system still based on power but everyone would be crucial, all pack members had a purpose and were valued. She would have a home, a place to sleep, welcomed among other demons, among a canine species like her own. Instead of being bullied, demeaned, isolated and outcasted, she would be worshipped, respected, loved and adored, seen as a princess. She would create a generation of children that would be infamous among both the DaiYokai and lower ranking demons, carrying mixed blood and powers. But she hated the thought of abandoning this village, the life she made for herself, the family she found, the people who had come to love her, she felt so torn. She'd made so many decisions over the course of her life, but this had to be the hardest she had made in a long time.
"So, has that guy seen your human side yet?" he questioned, there was only so far you could go to hide something like that. The villagers had to become curious or suspicious, demons would sense her weakened demonic aura. She had lived here long enough that she couldn't hide it, a glimpse of it had to have been seen. She had to trust him enough to show her human face to him. She couldn't deny that part of herself, she couldn't lie about it, everyone knew she was a half breed.
InuYuki hardened, glaring at him with piercing amber eyes, anger, hostility and fear filling her, the aura of emotions forming around her, warning him to shut up. Her human blood, her human side, her most protected and guarded secret that she had never let anyone see. That time of her life where she was at her most vulnerable, where enemies would hunt her down for her life. Though she had trusted Kichirou with some information after much time and communication, she didn't need outsiders knowing such information. Sesshoumaru had bullied her for her human side all her life, treating it as something repulsive and shameful. She had always hid herself from him, scared that he would find her. InuKimi had seen her human form, but avoided and neglected her during that time, due to her strong resemblance to Izayoi. Kouga was a stranger, he was an outsider and he was someone she didn't fully trust yet. If he thought she was willing to show him that side of herself just because of an arranged marriage, he was mistaken, she would find ways to hide from him.
Kouga held up his hands defensively "Woah now puppy, I ain't going to brag to anyone. Like I said, I don't hate humans, I don't care that your a half breed. But if you've been living here long enough he has to have seen it, that vulnerable side of yourself" he pressed. He would never force her to show that side to him, not until she was ready and comfortable. He wasn't naive to the fact that many Hanyou had lost their lives due to stronger demons hunting them down for sport during their human form. The knowledge of that sickened him to his core, he would never allow such a thing to happen to her. She couldn't hide her human side, she couldn't lie about it or pretend it didn't happen, the one night when she lost her demon blood and became vulnerable. He just hoped someday he would get to see it for himself. To see what human blood her mother had passed down to her mother, how she looked when she resembled her mother, if she was as lovely as she was now.
InuYuki softened, but her expression was still stubborn, "He has, he puts up wards when I become human and seals me within the village, so I'm protected" she explained. He knew the risks she was under, how dangerous it was for her and how exposing herself was never an option. No villager was ever allowed to enter, nobody could see her human face, it was private. He summoned all of his spiritual power, forming a barrier around the village, where nobody could enter or leave. Though she was still brought food, nobody could enter her room. She refused to leave or come out until morning, when her demon blood returned.
Kouga whistled "I'm jealous, I mean if you're this cute as a demon, how adorable are you as a human?" he teased. Would she resemble her mother? What colour eyes would she have? What about her hair? Her complexion? her voice, her body? His mind wandered. Though she would be immensely weaker and he would have the upper hand, he would never hurt her or bully her. He wanted to see how she changed, he wanted to see her alternate side, her mothers blood. To compare her appearance and change in personality when she was human until she changed back.
"Horny wolf" she scoffed, but she was fighting back the urge to smile.
The sun had set, orangey red glow burning into the sky like a wildfire, the silhouettes of the villagers making their way home, children hiding within their huts to protect themselves from what hid in the dark. The animals were fed, the food and collections for trade were all locked away, to be ordered into what was to be sold and what was to be kept. The sounds of insects, animals and gossip fluttered through the village. InuYuki was still guarding the village while Kouga remained by her side, making sure nobody was hurt, nobody came to harm and everything was in order. Kouga enjoyed watching her, how she showed innate leadership and empathy for those around her. Bonding together in ways neither of them expected. The figure of a horse wandered into the village with a weary rider, people whispering and conversing in delight as their priest returned home safely.
"Lord Kichirou"
"He has returned"
"He's safe"
"He has defeated the demons"
"Welcome home milord"
InuYuki felt her heart flutter, Kichirou had returned, she had waited all day for him to come home, watching the distance and worrying herself sick. Praying that he would return to her, that he wouldn't be harmed, that he would be proud of her guarding the village. Seeing him again, she couldn't stop herself, the happiness filling her, she rushed towards the edge of the village, her eyes shining with adoration. "Kichirou!" she cried in delight. She wanted to hold him in her arms, feel his heartbeat, breathe him in, remind herself that this wasn't a dream. Kichirou halted his horse, slowly climbing off the back of the animal, approaching the ground. He was relieved to see the village was still in one piece, no damage, no attacks, no casualties. He was exhausted, he smelled like blood and war, the memories of the demons faces haunted him, their warped faces perished at the hands of his arrows, destroying them. Unfortunately the village had suffered casualties due to the attacks occurring prior to his travels, but he had managed to prevent further losses and injuries. Protecting another village from demonic influence, though he had sent word out for another priest or priestess to be sent out to guard the village as soon as their training was complete. He had finally relieved himself of his daily duties and could relax at home with his loved ones, being home again relieved him, to be around the people familiar to him. InuYuki rushed into his arms, wrapping her arms around his neck, pressing herself against him and kissing his face, breathing in his scent and remembering him. She withheld her strength as to not hurt him, her emotions running wild and she was shaking like a leaf. Comforting herself as well as him, she didn't want to let him go, she could smell blood and other demons on him "You're home" she beamed.
Kichirou smiled, holding her close to him as he eased against her, relief filling him, he had been away all day and all he could think of was returning home to her. She had coped well and protected the village, she had driven away any attackers and she had kept everything in order. She didn't give herself enough credit for how capable she was, he knew she could handle it "How were the children? I hope they weren't too mischievous" he asked.
"They were well behaved, nobody ran off... we... had a lot of fun" she babbled, they had remained within her sight, none had wandered off and got into trouble, no attackers and everyone had been well behaved. None of them caused her any trouble or bullied one another. They were in good hands.
Kichirou felt a shiver run through his body, a familiar presence of demonic aura, he realised that by leaving her alone she had been in danger. How could he have been so foolish? So oblivious? Without him there to protect her, his rival had taken this as an opportunity to strike. His eyes darkened, holding InuYuki tighter, his eyes hardened with anger, his gaze directed at the rival male standing at a distance. He felt rage pour through him like fire, anger burning within him as he imagined the two of them alone together.
Kouga observed the two, watching curiously, his hand on his hip, he knew that if he got too close right now Kichirou would threaten him. He had every right to be upset but he hadn't done anything wrong, he hadn't taken advantage of InuYuki in any way. Though admittedly he felt jealousy, watching InuYuki rush towards Kichirou without hesitation, smothering him in affection. They had a bond, they were in love, they had opened their hearts to one another and developed a relationship. This sort of affection, loyalty and trust had been earned, the way her eyes sparkled in his presence. He knew InuYuki was still learning to trust him, still adapting and getting to know him, he hoped that someday she could come to care for him too. He hoped that she would stop seeing him as an enemy, that he was trying to replace Kichirou, he was in fact hoping to earn his own place in her heart. That she would open her heart the same way, that same smile, that same love and that same tenderness could be directed towards him.
Kichirou approached Kouga warily, still holding his quiver of arrows and his bow, "I see you've returned to the village, have you come to harass InuYuki? Surely you have better ways to pass your time?" Kichirou huffed. They were married, she had chosen to mate with him and she resided in the village of her own free will. Nobody was forcing her to stay here and she wouldn't change her mind. Why was he so obsessed with trying to force her to accept his proposal and arranged marriage, couldn't he see how unhappy it made her? Couldn't he find another woman? One who would accept his proposal while benefitting his clan?
"N.. No! Kichirou he didn't! He hasn't hurt me nor the children, he's been warding off demons all day! He's been watching the village borders, scaring off rogue demons and helping me watch the children!" she pressed. She pressed her hands to his chest to hold him back, using all of her demon strength, he couldn't fight against her if he tried. He needed to listen, jumping to conclusions would get him nowhere. Though he could be a threat, Kouga hadn't made any implication he was a threat so far. He had kept an eye on her all day, helping her with tasks and protecting the village. She was grateful for his help, even if she was frustrated and flustered by his presence.
Kichirou softened, caressing her head tenderly "Only if you are safe and unbothered by his presence" he soothed, he hated the thought of her being distressed. She was very important to him.
"I am" she promised, she wouldn't allow Kouga anywhere near the village if she suspected that he meant harm to any of the villagers. She would have chased him down herself and left a warning. She could sense no malicious intent or hidden agenda, he was truly intent on just bonding with her. He was doing this to prove himself to her as a future companion and lover. Admittedly he was sweeter than she had previously realised.
Kichirou sighed, he wouldn't back down from this male demon pursuing his lover but he was grateful of his help "Thank you, not many demons have shown InuYuki such kindness over her life. I hope you wont take it personally, but as guardian priest of this village and past guardian of the shikon jewel. My responsibility of this village is higher than most" he explained. He knew the cruelty she had endured growing up, even from her own family, something that angered him. He didn't trust Kouga fully and he was jealous of his interest in his wife. He had fought off many threats before, this village was his responsibility. He'd had many duties over the years after becoming a priest, many threats and many dangers, he could never afford to let his guard down.
Kouga smiled "I was promised her hand by her brother, I may be a demon but I ain't heartless, we aren't all beasts. I have people to protect back home too, spending time with her, getting to know her. It's been intriguing and entertaining to see the person she truly is. But more so, understanding her world". Sesshoumaru may have arranged the marriage to suit his own agenda, but he never predicted Kouga would actually fall in love with his sister. Now she had two men fighting for her affections. He had a fondness for InuYuki, he was curious about her and he wanted her in his life. Though he was spending his time between here and his home, he wanted to see more of her. Hoping she would understand how much he cared about her.
"I promised him some medicine, my mothers tonic, to help his people" she pressed, Kouga had medicine but nothing nearly as potent or helpful. She had plenty to spare and she had promised to help him, after he had aided her today it was the least she could do. She wasn't going to be so rude to him after his kindness, for all he could be annoying she wouldn't do something that cruel. Making a false promise only to hurt him. Kichirou raised an eyebrow, she had promised him medicine, was this another trick? Why would a demon need medicine?
Kouga held up his hands defensively "My people have healers, but the medicine we have ain't nothing like yours or her mothers tonic. I accept if you don't want to aid us, but she promised on her own volition" he explained. Many had been poisoned, suffered stomach ailments, fevers and more, despite being demons even they could be severely sickened or wounded by certain wounds and poisons. Only DaiYokai were immune to all ailments, lesser demons were not so fortunate. He had children to consider. Kichirou wasn't forced to help him in any way, priests and demons had been enemies for centuries, but InuYuki had made a promise out of kindness. Nobody was forcing her to do this.
"Despite your interest in my lover, you haven't harmed my people nor have you caused distress in the village. I will gladly send you off with a pouch of medicine, though use sparingly as we cannot be offering it regularly" Kichirou warned. He wouldn't send Kouga away and allow his people to suffer because he was jealous, he needed help and he would offer it. However, he would appreciate it Kouga didn't take advantage of his kindness in the future. The villagers were wary but made no complaints of Kouga's presence, they trusted Kichirou's judgement. Once he had the medicine he would leave.
Kouga nodded, breathing a sigh of relief, his people would be glad of the medicine "Appreciate it".
Kouga placed the jar of liver potion and herbal tonic in his pouch, he would protect them until he reached home and they would be handled by his healers. He hoped that the spiritual influence from Kichirou wouldn't hurt his people or he couldn't accept any more of it. As much as his people needed medicine, he wasn't willing to risk their wellbeing for it. He had been offered some food before he left for his journey, which he humbly accepted as to not be rude to them. He would be visiting again, though he had some diplomatic stuff to take care of beforehand. As brief as it had been, spending time with InuYuki was worth it.
"Running off with your tail between your legs?" InuYuki teased, he always came and left so quickly, despite being so smitten with her. Like he was watching from afar and testing the waters. He was definitely loyal, she smelled no other females on him, no other demons, so she was the only one he was pursuing. He could have any woman he wanted and yet since his proposal he hadn't been anywhere near another woman. She had expected him to be a flirt given how forward he was with her, but it seemed he was the monogamist type.
Kouga blushed, had she come to see him off? The thought of her sneaking away from Kichirou to say goodbye to him made his heart flutter, like she was breaking the rules to see him. Like something out of a romantic story or poem, forbidden love. The sunset made her even more stunning than before, her eyes appeared even more golden, illuminating her in an orangey glow, beaming off of her. He felt his heart flutter, the hold she had on him, the way she consumed his thoughts. "I get the feeling your beloved doesn't like having me around, unless you want me to be your little secret?" he winked. Hiding away together out of sight and talking in secret, where roaming eyes and curious intruders couldn't see.
She scoffed, Kichirou trusted her and knew she loved him, he knew she could handle herself. She followed her heart and did what she knew was right "Thank you for today, helping with the kids". He probably had children back home in the pack that admired him, smaller members of his tribe he had to care for. She noticed him carefully storing away the medicine she gave him, aware of how fragile and precious it was. It was the small things that mattered, that probably would have meant nothing to someone else, but everything to her. She shifted "My mum taught me the liver potion, it's great for fevers and colds, it's better dried but fresh it's rather pungent. So be prepared for a strong smell" she warned. Kichirou's tonic was bitter in taste at times but the smell was fragrant and less repulsive, easier to swallow and worked well.
Kouga smiled, the love and patience it had taken to make, passing down a treasured memory her mother had taught her. He understood its value and how much it meant to her "Sometimes medicine is hard to swallow but it does the job". He then swallowed nervously, reaching out to take her hand, his heart racing, lightly intertwining his fingers in her hand, raising her small hand to his lips and kissing it softly, making her blush. He was still testing the waters on what would make her comfortable, but showing affection was slowly becoming comfortable. "I'll be back again princess, I won't make you wait too long" he winked. InuYuki watched as he disappeared in a tornado, vanishing into the distance and back to the mountains once more.
"That wolf guy has been visiting more often" Kaede reflected, he'd heard about the arranged marriage that InuYuki's half brother had decided. He was glad he had never met the guy, he sounded arrogant as hell. But Kouga didn't give the appearance nor attitude of someone who was cruel, heartless or planned on forcing her to marry him. He'd learned through his friendship with his sister in law and older brother that not all demons were monsters. Kouga could truly have feelings for InuYuki, but that made the situation complicated, due to her involvement with his brother.
"Wolves are loyal, when they make a promise they have to stand by it, knowing my brother, he's probably harbouring something against them alongside this political deal" InuYuki reflected. Kouga wouldn't back down from this, once wolves made a promise they followed through. Kouga didn't seem like a bad person, in fact he was very charming, but she had fallen in love with someone else. Maybe if they had met before Kichirou she would consider such a match. She wouldn't be surprised if her half brother was threatening his clan in some form to make him go through with this. Nobody was foolish enough to make an enemy of her half brother. She knew how cruel Sesshoumaru could be.
"He's truly a devious individual, how intertwined he has made this, effecting all of us" Kichirou hummed, Sesshoumaru had done his research into his sisters life, following her and gathering all the information he could use against her. He saw her as a pawn, an object in his schemes, he dehumanised her in every possible way. He wanted to make her miserable, knowing she couldn't defy him. Trying to make choices on her life that she didn't want. He hoped they never had to meet in person, he sounded like a loathsome individual.
"The village kids like him, they were all gossiping about how you and that wolf prince let them play piggy back all afternoon" Kaede stated. They were all saying how handsome, playful and funny he was, talking about the jokes InuYuki made about Kouga, gossiping and laughing. He had barely been around the village for a few weeks, less than a month and he was very popular.
"Hey if it saves me back pain from playing horse all day I'll take the opportunity" InuYuki smiled, admittedly having him around to help was an alleviation from the responsibility and stress she faced. It connected her to a positive side of the demon realm, showing her that not all demons were assholes like her brother or the ones that tormented her growing up. Now understanding why her mother married a demon. If more demons were like Kouga with a responsible and kind heart, less humans would hate and fear them.
"So, he's already got children on the brain, he's got some nerve, implying his intentions with you" Kichirou reflected, he had come here to show off his paternal skills, feed on her sensitive side and seduce her into marrying him. He wanted her to bear his children, to create a demon hybrid child, taking her away to his pack to become his wife. He was doing so subtly, which was clever as nobody would assume. He was already winning InuYuki over which was what hurt more. Thinking of his wife that way, thinking of InuYuki that way, it angered him, that another man was making his feelings known.
"He really wants you to have his babies" Kaede agreed, they were both canine demons so they had similar genealogy. Though InuYuki was of royal blood and hierarchy of demons, they would still be prominent demons and similar in bloodlines. They had a lesser chance of being deformed and carrying similar looks to their parents. Sesshoumaru had really thought all of this through.
InuYuki blushed "B... babies?" she stammered, why was everyone so pressed on her reproducing and carrying on the family line? Why hadn't InuKimi been pressuring her son to marry lately? Surely he had potent genes that could be passed along. Why was all the pressure on her? Why was she being bullied into marrying another demon to appease her older brother? She was born of her mothers love for her father, her father chose her mother because he fell in love with her. To some extent Touga must have loved InuKimi to be married to her for so long and birth Sesshoumaru. Though she loved Kichirou she wasn't prepared to bring a life into the world just yet, but now that Kouga was in the mix the pressure had become worse.
"I mean he says he's your betrothed right? Your brother set this whole thing up, why else would he want you to marry another demon aside from making stronger offspring?" Kaede pressed. Sesshoumaru had made it known he despised that she was a half breed, he didn't acknowledge her marriage to a human, he saw it as a disgrace. He wanted to wipe out any remaining human blood in their family lineage. Marrying her off to someone like Kouga would ensure that, along the line unless their children married a human, the human in their lineage would die out.
InuYuki wilted, he wasn't wrong, Sesshoumaru was a devious person and he lorded over everyone, punishing them for their mistakes. Though he had ignored her when she was taking lessons under her stepmother, he approved of her learning. At times giving backhanded and strained compliments such as "You're a fast learner", "Educating yourself on your history", "Knowing your place" among many other comments. But when she took up medicine, combat and more he began to insult her. "Why do you insist on embarrassing me?", "Father may have left you his sword, but I am responsible for you". Until she chose to leave, until she abandoned them, Sesshoumaru made it clear she wasn't wanted. InuKimi at times comforted her as best she could, saying that tears showed weakness and that was something they didn't allow in the family. That by showing Sesshoumaru her tears would only cause him to distance himself from her. Thus InuYuki never cried in front of him, and bottled up her emotions from her half brother.
"Marrying off his sister to a fellow canine demon, I don't know if that's classed as desperate or manipulative" Kichirou scoffed, finding a demon in closer genetics to their kind to make the children closer in ties. He knew he was the only residing male of the family line, while his mother and half sister were the only other two living members. He took on the leadership role as lord of the western lands, while his half sister was to create new progeny. But instead of breaking tradition, he followed through and forged new rules to fit his agenda.
InuYuki wilted, Kouga had so far proven himself to be a good person, he could have kidnapped her, he could have stolen her from the village, forced her to become his wife already. He could have threatened her, bullied her or hurt her, he had the upper hand, but thus far he hadn't. He could have forced her to live with him in the mountains and arrange the wedding ceremony to become his mate officially, but instead chose to visit her where she was comfortable. He could have slaughtered the village using more of his pack and wolves, but he didn't threaten the villagers whatsoever. He brought her flowers, he helped her babysit, he had aided her in chores and kept her company, he proved himself with gestures and kind words. He spoke honestly from his heart and accurately perceived her dormant feelings, he knew of her inner conflict and how she felt torn to follow her heart. He didn't push his boundaries around Kichirou, but he showed affection when they were alone, flirting with her, getting her used to his company and expressing his feelings for her. Admittedly, she was starting to enjoy his company, that she was starting to miss him when he left. That mischievous smirk, his playful smile, those intense blue eyes, the sound of the wind when he approached.
Fuck
Ok, so she was a little attracted to him, he had just gotten under her skin so easily. She didn't know how it happened, she never thought it possible, another man could sway her feelings. He was nothing like how she expected him to be, he had caught her off guard and influenced her heart. "You'd be surprised how low Sesshoumaru is willing to go to fit his own agenda, he cares little for the feelings of others" she sighed. She knew what he was capable of, how tactical, cunning and scheming he could be, how he could use anyone to follow through with his plans. Watching from the sidelines as it unfolded. The worst was that he hated being embarrassed and humiliated, he held a grudge.
Kichirou softened, caressing her head affectionately "He has no power over this domain, he cannot force you to make a choice, soon he has to accept that" he soothed. While he ruled over the domain of the western lands, they were out of his reach, Kouga was part of the east so he was out of Sesshoumaru's influence too, unless they formed an alliance. He had no right to overstep his bounds here and force her to make a decision. She was safe here, she was safe with him and he wouldn't allow anything to happen to her. She was part of his family now, she was an older sister figure and mentor to Kaede, together they had formed a bridge between humans and demons, bringing them together. He wouldn't let her slip through his fingers. InuYuki felt a sharp pain in her chest, she loved how kind Kichirou was, how pure his heart was, his intentions were always selfless. But he had no idea of the dangers he was involving himself with. Demon politics were far more complicated than humans, she was of royalty, superior to any other demon, Kichirou was out of his depth. How could she protect him from this.
"This medicine is incredible" Ginta praised, it was fast acting, healthy and nourishing, aside from the strong taste it worked wonders. So Kouga had not found himself a beauty from a prominent royal lineage, she was skilled in medicine too. He had found himself a winner, a high quality girl for a bride. They couldn't wait to meet her in person.
"It's going to help us immensely, where did you get this Kouga?" Hikaku begged, they needed to know the recipe to replicate the ingredients if they ever ran out. The fact that InuYuki had given him this to him, it showed a great level of consideration. Their pack healer would appreciate this immensely.
Kouga blushed, he didn't know the recipe exactly, only InuYuki did probably from years of memorising it. He wouldn't take something like that away from her. "I uh... I visited InuYuki, she...she had some of her mothers medicine, she was able to give me some of the priests as well" he babbled. He would need to thank her for this, she had no reason to give him any, whether it was out of sympathy or pity, she was trying to help his people. She was an amazing girl and every time she managed to surprise him. She could have sent him packing but instead she chose to give him a gift before he left for home.
"She gave you homemade medicine?" they yelled in unison, a gift this special from a girl, let alone his future wife was a special token. This was her way of saying she cared about him, trusted him and she was opening her heart to him. He couldn't brush his off so easily.
Kouga rubbed his head awkwardly, he didn't want to get his hopes up but he was very happy deep down. He was still in the early stages of forming a courtship with her, he didn't want to make her uncomfortable. "She was being nice, I mean... it was sweet of her but she still..." he babbled nervously. InuYuki had a kind heart, she'd been neglected and abused her whole life, truly trusting someone and letting them in wasn't easy. They were both of age to marry and he wanted her more than anything, arrangement or not. He wanted to keep her safe, he wanted to live his life with her and he wanted to make her happy. He didn't expect her to fall for him right away, especially given she was in love with Kichirou, but he hoped she would develop feelings for him someday.
"Kouga, she gave you something special, like when you gave her the flowers, she wouldn't give you a family recipe if she didn't like you" Ginta pressed. Kouga had gifted her with presents sincerely as a form of courtship, not to just seem impressive and cocky. He visited her everyday when he could, she was always on his mind, everyone in the clan could see he was smitten. He was always thinking about her, when he couldn't visit her he was sulking. They had never seen Kouga so infatuated with a girl before, it was rather adorable.
"She's warming up to you" Hikaku agreed, she didn't turn him away, she didn't attack him, she didn't insult him and she didn't ignore him. Meaning whatever he was doing was working, he had been raised well and he was treating her with respect. They were very proud of him and hoped he would prove himself to be a good husband to her. Of course Sesshoumaru would want to know updates of their courtship and engagement in due time. The last thing he needed to do was scare her away and force her to become his wife, it would only lead to her distancing herself.
"So, what did you get up to? Did you make any progress we can tell the tribe?" Ginta asked, did they go on a walk? Did they go hunting together? Did they get food? Did he bring her flowers again? Kouga was a romantic at heart, though he would never admit it. When he was in love, he showed it, he wore his heart on his sleeve. He did everything in his power to prove she was special to him and that he valued her. All of the pack members were eager to know of their development, how far their relationship was going and what the princess thought of him. Had she slapped him? Yelled at him? Run away? Or had she teased him, been kind to him? They were all so curious given how private he was being.
Kouga sighed, it was nothing special, nothing overly romantic but he had enjoyed himself. It felt so natural, so ordinary and yet so memorable "She... she was babysitting the village kids, playing with them. I... I was able to locate her, so we spent the afternoon taking care of them and talking" he mumbled. The children had been wary of him at first but after she soothed him they all warmed up to him, instead of being scared they played with him. Carrying them on his back, on his shoulders. It was similar to how the younger pack children acted around him.
"WHAT?! Kouga! That's amazing!" Ginta praised, she had not only allowed him to help her with village duties, she had introduced him to some of the younger members. The children getting used to his presence would allow him to warm up to them. She had asked him to help her, she had asked him to stay, that was a huge deal.
"What else happened?" Hikaku pestered, this story kept getting more interesting by the second and they needed to know more. Kouga had been keeping so much important stuff secret which was frustrating. But understandably he was nervous, this was his first serious relationship. Everyone forgot that Kouga was still a teenager mentally despite how old he was in demon years. He was going to make mistakes, he was going to be embarrassed and get nervous, but he was doing an amazing job. They would offer as much advice as he needed in his endeavours of love, so that he would succeed in winning InuYuki's heart.
"Uh... we talked, I explained about our life in the pack, how she would be respected, cared for and how everyone was excited to meet her" Kouga explained. He knew she had her reservations towards other demons, due to how she had been treated her whole life which was understandable. But he wasn't one of them, he was nothing like that, and he needed her to know that. He wanted her to understand the life she would be living, the people she would be living among, what kind of people they were. He trusted Ginta and Hikaku with his life, they weren't just his guards they were his best friends, he'd known them for years. If he wasn't there to protect or comfort her, they would in his place. The children would adore her, she would have a handmaiden to make sure no harm came to her. She could roam and explore as much as she wanted, she wouldn't be a prisoner. But she needed to understand once they were mated and married, it would be for life.
"Telling her about us, showing a sensitive side, that's good" Ginta nodded, opening up to her, letting her see his true self, trusting her. It took a lot for Kouga to trust people, he'd been hurt before and many false allies had betrayed him. Kouga was risking a lot by marrying her, Sesshoumaru could hurt his people, hurt his clan. But Kouga had a big heart and he was showing that to his would be bride.
"She uh... she was nervous about her human side, when I asked her about it" Kouga confessed, he knew her human side was her most vulnerable, a part of herself she had been shamed for. A part of her that her brother had called dirty, shameful, weak and worse. She had been made to feel isolated and hated for her mothers blood, that it was something she needed to hide and repress. But he didn't want that, he hated that she was made to feel that way. Her mother had given her life, nurtured and raised her, she was the first person to accept InuYuki for who she was. Kouga wanted to understand her human self, see what kind of person she was and what kind of girl he was marrying. To accept that side of her and know she was safe with him.
"Did she get mad? Did she run off?" Hikaku asked, he would understand why she would be nervous, many Hanyou were bullied, abused and beaten for their identities. Many were hunted as a form of amusement to other sadistic demons, born with a target on their back's. She would be wary, nervous and scared and she had every reason to be.
"She... she was sensitive about it but she wasn't angry, I may have implied I was eager to meet that side of her" Kouga trailed off, he understood why. But deep down he meant every word, he'd dreamed about meeting her, seeing her. His mind wandered to their future, the life they would share and what kind of person she was. He couldn't help being curious, it was in his nature, he just wanted to learn all about her.
"Did the priest show up?" Ginta asked, she lived in the same village as him, she had that protection, he was very powerful. He was surprised Kouga wasn't fatigued from the influence of his spiritual power, draining him.
"He...he did, but he was gone all day so we could be alone together. But... he didn't chase me off and she prevented an argument, so... it was kind of a date" Kouga confessed. He had blessedly been able to bond with her without interruption or being caught, it felt like a date. He could speak to her without worry of Kichirou chasing him off. He counted his blessings that he had that sort of luck. But he wished it could have been longer, they could have planned more, they could have fit more in, but instead they just made the best of it. Ginta and Hikaku's eyes welled up with happy tears, this was the best new they had heard all day, slow or fast progress was still progress. He was thinking rationally and not jumping into things. Their leader had met his future wife, he was caught in a love triangle but he was handling it so well, he was warming up to her, earning her trust, flirting with her but proving himself, he was being himself. He was growing up, finding a wife and proving himself as a future husband and leader, it was so wonderful to see.
"We can't wait to meet her" Ginta smiled, soon they would need to visit the village with him and greet their future princess. They needed to make themselves known and welcome her to their pack.
"You need to give her a wedding gift" Hikaku agreed, it was the symbol of a wedding, to give the bride a gift to show a token of affection and her position in the tribe. It needed to be well thought out and designed, to show sincerity.
Kouga reflected, he already had the Goraishi, his clans strongest weapon but he wouldn't use that against Kichirou, he could attempt to use it against Sesshoumaru but they would become enemies. When he became clean leader with a wife he would have it on his person nearly at all times, his battle armour. But InuYuki needed something too, she already had her fathers sword which she scarcely used unless for emergencies. He wracked his brain for what he could give her, something meaningful, he remembered his father gave his mother a precious token as proof of his feelings for her, maybe he should do the same. "I need the finest wood we can find, sacred, some old fangs from some bones, a few moon pearls. I need them to be carved perfectly with moon symbols, beaded with the fangs, a small carved wolf and the moon pearls beaded together. An engagement gift and protective seal" Kouga babbled. They lived in the mountains surrounded by trees but some trees were very old, ancient and sacred, making beads from such wood made them more valuable than common wood, they took more damage. Fangs from old bones made them from past generations, stronger and more durable, inheriting past power. Moon pearls were even rarer on wolf tribe grounds, they took many years to form perfectly, both resembling the moon and glowing in the darkness with bio luminescence. They would add some beauty to the bracelet. By infusing it with the same power of the Goraishi, a barrier from the wolf tribe, it would protect her and keep her safe. However, it would also be a marriage gift from himself as proof of his feelings for her, he would gift it to her when he was ready.
"Of course Kouga, we'll get the men on that" Ginta agreed, he was putting so much thought into this, proving his sincerity to her. Kouga would never ask such orders for anyone if they weren't special to him. Using sacred pieces from their tribe was a meaningful and sacred offer from the wolf tribe, already welcoming and accepting an outsider as one of their own. So long as she wore this bracelet she wouldn't only be labelled his bride, but she would have the protection of the tribe. Any other wolves would see it and know she was one of them.
"I'm sure she'll love it" Hikaku smiled, girls loved special presents from admirers, showing their value in their eyes, their devotion and sincerity. I saw this and thought of you.
Kouga softened, he'd already given her flowers which she still treasured and kept inside the hut she shared with Kichirou, meaning she had some feelings for him. She wouldn't do that if she didn't feel something for him, he could sense it. He could smell her change in feelings, mood, how flustered she became around him. He had to prove himself, he had to prove his feelings for her were genuine, he hated to make her choose, but he really did love her. He knew Kichirou was her soulmate, someone she had found and who had loved her as she was, but so did he. Sesshoumaru may have chosen this alliance to spite her, but Kouga accepted out of love.
