I don't know if anyone reads this, but here's an update with even more drama going down. Kouga and Kichirou both see Inu's human side
I'm considering that Sesshoumaru attack the village later on, kidnapping her and forcing her to reside in the castle with Kouga until marriage. But Kichirou comes to save her. IDK it's an idea
InuYuki growled under her breath, oh this was perfect, how could this get any worse? She had been happily content, separated from her paternal side, free to make her own choices, living her life on her terms. She was never dragged into anyone else's problems and she felt free. Until that dream was shattered to pieces and she was reminded of her place in the world. It felt like lately her life had become more complicated than before, she had finally found belonging and peace. She had never involved herself in his life and she would have thought the sentiment would be returned, he may have been blood but he never acted like it. She'd thought he would respect her privacy and they could continue to act like strangers, only to be dragged into her brothers schemes, becoming a puppet pulled by his strings, forced to make a decision. She felt so suffocated, her brother breathing down her neck from the shadows, taunting her to make a choice. That he would never accept anyone of her choosing, whomever she married he would approve on his terms, her brothers political alliance with Kouga pressuring her not to go against him. But her love and devotion for Kichirou, how he had accepted her, she was bound to him and heart and soul. Her brother and stepmother both disagreed with the fact she had slept with Kichirou before marriage, as had her stepmother. Neither of them approved of her supposed promiscuity, as they took is as a personal insult to their lineage. Finding a husband better suited for her that would be better for the family reputation. She was being pressured by her half brother to marry another demon for political reasons, now she was being courted by two men. This was all so much to cope with, realising how socially awkward she was, she had never been so popular in her entire life, she had avoided romance all her life, and now she was overwhelmed by two men fighting for her affection. Giving her flowers, tokens of affection, pet names and trying to win her heart. And now of all times, the dark moon had fallen, meaning she had lost her demon blood, rendered into a human. She had been able to protect herself until now, using her demonic power to handle herself and make sure nobody bothered her. If her brother chose to attack she would be at his mercy, if he sent an enemy to hunt her down she would be killed. He knew what phase of the moon she became human, he knew what time of the year she lost her demonic blood. He was acutely aware of this and could use it against her, but he never had. It was the one moral he had never gone against, as cruel as he could be. She was at her most helpless, she couldn't use any of her DaiYokai powers to protect herself, she was a weakling, with no potential to fight back, forced to go into hiding. So she relented to accepting her fate, relying on Kichirou for protection, curled up in futons, hiding herself in shame, crying with frustration. All of her pent up emotions pouring out of her all at once. Her life had become such a mess she deserved to cry and sulk about it. Kichirou had promised to protect the village, keeping wards upon the door to protect her, making sure no demons could enter. He knew she was at high risk, she had enemies and she had no way to defend herself. All of the villagers promised to do what they could to help, making sure she had all the support she needed, many had become fond of her. Forming guard rounds, using torches, weapons and whatever else they could get their hands on, at least the brave ones had. InuYuki was at her most vulnerable, anyone could attack her right now and it would be fatal, as a human she couldn't protect herself against demon attacks, she had no spiritual power like he did. She hated having to rely on other people, she was distrustful and she was cautious, but many understood this. Her childhood causing her to become resilient, independent and cautious. All the villagers knew to leave her in peace, knowing that disturbing her was not an option, waiting for her demon blood to return and things to return to normal.
"Damn it, damn it all to hell, why did this have to happen now?" she whined, she could always sense when her human form was becoming dominant, she could sense the change within herself. The demonic abilities she was adapted to became weaker, her senses dulled, forcing her to go into hiding. She needed something or someone to take this rage out on, this frustration, she wanted to punch something, run into the night and just let herself think. But instead she was trapped in a hut, hiding away in a dark hole, relying on her lover for protection. She had no way of venting her feelings, expressing herself, instead forced to withdraw into herself and sulk. Kouga was still pursuing her, but so far he had only ever seen her as a demon, he had never seen her human side, he had never seen her without her powers. He'd brought her flowers, he'd spent time with her and respected her boundaries. He'd earned her trust to an extent, he wanted to understand her world and was taking the time to court her. However, his connections and history still worried her, given how their engagement was formed. He had heard about the alluring demon princess who was the half sister of Sesshoumaru, princess of the great general Touga. Everyone knew of her brother, everyone knew of her father. Everyone looked up to them, respected them, admired them, worshipped them, two infamous figures. While she was seen as the hanyou bastard, he had never seen the weakling human side of her, the shamed daughter. The reason why Sesshoumaru hated her so much, why he mocked her and disowned her, he would surely be disgusted.
"InuYuki?" Kichirou soothed, he had heard her crying and came to comfort her, he knew she had a lot of mixed feelings right now. As soon as the sun began to get low, as soon as her human blood became potent, she had locked herself away. The fear of being discovered filling her, avoiding everyone in the village, refusing to show her face. She accepted meals, but she remained isolated, hiding herself away, she was deeply upset, frustrated at her weakness and unable to do anything about it. She didn't want to lower her guard to anyone, she needed privacy and she wouldn't allow anyone to intrude. Though she had come to accept it, she was still traumatised by the hatred and bullying she had endured growing up, alongside the abuse from her older brother. Her human blood from her mother was something to be ashamed of, it was something embarrassing. Despite her love for her mother, her human blood was dishonourable as a member of the Inu-DaiYokai clan, he knew part of her would never trust anyone like this. Her broken trust and childhood trauma would never allow it, knowing that if the wrong person knew, her life would be at risk. She had been traumatised at a young age, any optimism she once had was long gone, her trust in others shattered. No matter how much he loved and cared for her, accepted her, part of her would always be cautious. Part of her would always be distrusting, she had learned to be alone, she wasn't used to being loved.
InuYuki flinched, nearly yelping in surprise, she had been so lost in thought, had she not been protected this would have killed her. Her senses dulled, her keen senses rendered to a humans, unable to hear him coming. This is why she hated her transformation, how weak she became, how vulnerable she became. Kichirou was still checking on her, he was worried about her, he knew how she would be feeling. She hated that he was being so kind and she was hiding away like a coward, she didn't deserve his kindness. He had forged a shield around the hut so nobody could enter, using his spiritual power against anyone who would do her harm, assuring her safety until morning. "I... I'm fine" she mumbled.
"Would you like some tea? More food? Company?" he questioned, she had to be hungry, her stamina and energy levels back to human levels, meaning she needed to keep her strength up. She had avoided everyone all day, she wouldn't speak to anyone, people had even brought offerings but she rejected them. She had to be starving, she needed to eat, she needed to rest. He wouldn't let her harm herself in human form out of spite, he would make sure she remained healthy.
InuYuki wilted, he was so kind to her and she was pushing him away, she could feel the distance between them and it hurt to do so. She had let him into her heart, she had opened herself up to him, and yet now she was putting up walls. She was so focused on herself that she was ignoring how this was affecting him, how worried he would be. His lover had transformed, he had no idea what she looked like, what had happened to her, if she was in pain, all he knew was she was the same person. Right now she shared the same blood he did, she was fully human, the person she had fallen in love with. But she was hiding away like it was something to be ashamed of, like she was ashamed of him. She needed him to know she loved him, that this didn't change anything, she was just scared "No.. I.. thank you... I just... I can't let anyone see me like this.." she mumbled.
Kichirou nodded, as much as it hurt him to be apart from her, he knew it was for a good reason. Someday he hoped she would trust him enough, someday she would show him this side of herself. The blood of her mother, resembling the human princess who brought her into the world, but she wasn't ready yet. This was a delicate matter, a part of herself she had protected since she was young, it would be a huge step in her life. "I understand, I'll be patrolling and watching the village borders" he soothed, he had plenty of arrows, the villagers had weapons and patrols around the village. He had formed many sutra scrolls around the village forming wards, making sure no strays entered and tried to harm her.
Kouga lingered near the edge of the village, it seemed these days he was spending more and more time around the humans who had sheltered InuYuki. Learning all about her world, how humans adapted and formed a community. How these people had accepted her, how she had found a home among them were she didn't before. He knew other demons would gossip, rumours spreading about his involvement with her but he couldn't cares less. He had left the mountain, Ginta and Hakaku had sensed that something was bothering him, that he was thinking about InuYuki. They knew how much he had come to care about her, Kouga had never felt this way about any girl before, having a previous disinterest in marriage. They had encouraged him to go and check on her, to ease his concerns, they could handle things without him. This was his future wife he was worried about, the next princess of their tribe. He belonged with her and he needed to know her wellbeing was safe, he'd been right to trust his fears had been rational, relieved he made the journey to the village. The closer he got to her domain, the stranger things felt, for some unknown reason, the demon presence was stronger around the village. Causing his suspicions to grow stronger, trying to formulate answers as an explanation. He could smell them for miles, fighting off any stragglers who tried to come close, making sure they never bothered her again. Though usually driven away by Kichirou's spiritual aura and InuYuki's demonic energy, nobody would dare approach, they had gotten braver. It was as though they were mocking them both, seeking an opportunity that they hadn't before. But something felt off, he could feel it in his gut, there was something ominous about the village. The moon was gone, a darkened orb in the sky, almost invisible to those with human eyesight, while to demons they could still see the dark shape in the sky perfectly. The shining silver light that usually illuminated the sky was gone, causing humans to hide within their homes for protection. He couldn't sense InuYuki's demonic energy, it was if it had vanished overnight, something felt wrong. A gnawing in his stomach that he couldn't ignore, a feeling he couldn't quite explain but it was important. The fact that she was his bride had never deterred him, her bloodline had never bothered him, she was perfect. Humans were surprisingly durable, despite all hardships and torment from demons they endured. The wars among themselves, poverty, sickness and more, they still survived. Demons were far from perfect too, many despised humans and even had their own vanity and ignorance, mistaking power for superiority. Fighting among themselves and often killing one another to gain what the other lacked. Though too blind to see it they had more in common with humans than they realised.
But what could cause this feeling? He racked his brain, deeply in thought, before the answer slapped him in the face. Wait, it couldn't be? Now of all times he had to fortuitously sense that she was in danger and it just so happened to be the worst possible timing. He knew she would lose her demon blood eventually, although temporarily, the curse of all children born to two parents of such origins. All Hanyou eventually discarded their demon appearance briefly, showing the blood of their human parent. It was a prized secret, making sure to avoid danger, all creatures innately harboured self preservation. But Hanyou had enemies on both sides, human and demon, so their desire to avoid danger was stronger. Though many were killed during this time by stronger demons, some survived by going into hiding, remaining in isolated lives around trusted people as to avoid danger. Forming their own packs. It couldn't be tonight? Now of all nights she had become a human? No wonder he couldn't sense her demonic aura, no wonder there were stragglers scoping out of the village, they could sense it too. They had been drawn to her weakening demonic power and now wished to enact revenge or kill her.
His curiosity spiked, knowing all of this, he knew that his friends had sent him here for a good reason, though they were still strangers, all of them cared about her. He knew she had reasons to keep secrets and he didn't judge her for that. She never wanted anyone invading on her life, she never wanted anyone to take away what she had found for herself. She endured enough loss and wanted to preserve what she had. Where was she hiding? Was she safe? Of course that priest would know, only he would be privy to such important information. His mind filled with her, worry flooding him, she wasn't safe here, these humans could only do so much to ward off demonic attacks. They wouldn't be able to fight off an army, she could be killed. But he also found himself drawn to how she had changed, wondering what she looked like as a human, whether she was as beautiful in that form as she was a demon. What colour her hair was, what colour her eyes became, how much she changed from what he remembered. But then he didn't want to scare her, she still had reservations about him, boundaries, she was warming up to him but she still had her guard up. He knew she would be more distrusting than ever, prepared for rogue demons to attack her. He needed to protect her, he needed to prove he would ensure her safety and wasn't a threat to her, that he was different from other demons. Moments like this he was glad of his night vision, able to see things that humans couldn't.
"It's no use hiding, I can sense you, why don't you make this easy and desist with your games" Kichirou warned, he had sensed a demonic aura approaching and went to investigate. He had to be alert, InuYuki was relying on him and he was the only protection she had. After Sesshoumaru had arranged her fiancé, making a deal with the wolf tribe, he wondered if spies had been sent. But then it was only a matter of time before he appeared in person. Had Sesshoumaru sent him to spy on her? Had he come to kidnap her when she was at her weakest? Knowing she couldn't fight back? From what he had heard of his brother in law, he was despicable enough to attempt such a thing. They were getting braver.
Kouga sighed, of course the priest sensed him, admittedly he was impressed by how sharp his skills were, no wonder demons were wary of him. He'd earned his reputation for a good reason. He was adamantly protecting her and he admired that, he could do some harm to whoever tried to come after her. His spiritual power was like smoke, pouring from him in waves, making his skin tingle. Even with his demonic power, Kichirou could do some damage to him, ones that would take a while to heal. "Lower your arrows priest, it's just me" Kouga sighed, appearing from the shadows, he meant no harm, he had no interest in driving fear into the villagers, he came here to check on InuYuki. He could assume the worst of him if he wanted, but he would be honest with his intentions, but he had committed no crime.
Kichirou's eyes widened, Kouga stepping from the shadows, he was the last person he expected to visit at a time like this. Kouga had been making it habitual to come and visit her ever since their engagement, imprinting himself onto her. Involving himself in both of their lives, bringing her gifts, developing a relationship with her and hoping to swoon her. Creating a wedge between his relationship with InuYuki. However, he was suspicious of his alliance with Sesshoumaru and how much was happening behind the scenes. What they had in store for her and what would happen if this marriage was confirmed. "Kouga? What... why would you come here? Unless you mean to do her harm?!" Kichirou demanded, why now of all nights would he choose to come?
"I sensed something was wrong, I can't explain it but my gut told me InuYuki was in trouble, I had no idea tonight of all nights was when she became... human" he pressed, his voice lowering at the last part. He knew how this looked out of context, how suspicious his coming here looked, but it was mere coincidence. He had no idea this was the night she became human, but at least he was informed for the future, it would become valuable information to him. His clan could offer protection to them, making sure no harm came to her, atop that when she became his bride, he would know when she lost her demon powers, knowing when to protect her. They would be able to increase barrier protection, increased guards on their borders, hiding her away and making sure she wasn't disturbed.
Kichirou lowered his bow, he sensed no lies from him and thus far hadn't harmed InuYuki. His demonic instincts were sharp, it was impressive, picking up on her change in scent, as well as her demonic aura. "You're a keen one wolf, yes she's under my protection for the time being, she's sealed away until morning. She's hidden herself away for protection" he sighed. If he was to eventually marry her, he would be privy to such information, but he feared that Kouga like many other demons would abuse and torment her. The blood of the enemy, the blood of a weakling in the eyes of a demon. Kichiroi knew she didn't want to be seen, her privacy invaded and he respected that, it didn't mean she loved him any less.
"She's alone?!" Kouga snapped, how could he be so foolish? He was picking fights with him instead of guarding her? She was at her most vulnerable, she would need his protection now more than ever and he was wandering around the village. Surely he should be by her side, protecting and guarding her, offering emotional support so she felt safe and loved. How could he leave her by herself? Was he so intent in forming a fight with him based on jealousy and spite? Proving who was more deserving than her? They needed to put her first, they needed to take care of her. Instead of sitting and having a competition over who loved her more.
"I'm not so stupid as to leave her unprotected. I've placed wards around her, so no demon can enter. She's hiding until morning" Kichirou scolded. Even if they were apart, he had her wellbeing on his mind always, he would never let anything happen to her as long as he was alive. He had faced worse demons before, he knew how to prepare for risks and how to drive them away. InuYuki had once crossed paths with him before, back when they were still enemies, he had been severely wounded by a demon in battle and could have been killed. However, she spared his life, watching over him until the villagers came to his aid. Kouga softened, so she was safe at least, they had assured she would protected until her demonic powers returned. But he felt saddened at the image of her hiding away, like something shameful. "Now, you may leave, I have matters handled here" Kichirou warned, the villagers were already on edge with InuYuki's demonic power weakened, the threat of demon attacks and more. They didn't need further fear inflicted upon them, Kouga's presence made them wary, he had no reason to stay, so he could make his leave.
Kouga scoffed "I wouldn't be so sure buddy, you may be a powerful priest, but with her DaiYokai blood gone, she's got a lot of enemies. You think someone won't still try and take her life? Demon's can possess humans, you think they won't lure her out using that?" he reminded him. Spirits could use human shields, protecting them from the harm of priests, monks and priestesses alike. Many demons possessed humans to use them as a shield to attack others, like a puppet. Given how hated Hanyou were, given how Sesshoumaru had many enemies and her father had a reputation of his own. Many of his enemies would possess others and then come after InuYuki to spite them. Her father had made enemies over the course of his life that would come after his children, enacting their revenge on his children without hesitation. Her brother made it known he despised her, that he merely tolerated her, he would easily send an enemy to harass or harm her out of spite, just to put her in her place. Of all the people to worry about, he was not one of them.
Kichirou frowned, he was being patronised by a demon of all people, he was raised and trained in a temple to hone in his powers. He wasn't incapable of protecting her, he had keen senses and he was unmatched by any other priest or priestess living. The only person capable of matching him was Tsubasa, the dark priest, he was efficiently trained and lived through every encounter he faced. Of all people to be insulting him, demeaning him, he never thought it would be a demon 'You underestimate me?" he growled.
"Not in the slightest, I think you underestimate demons, I know how they think" Kouga huffed. He didn't underestimated Kichirou's power, he knew how powerful he was and he wouldn't like to make an enemy of him. However, he was ignorant to the ways of demons, their culture, powers, food chain, hierarchy. Not all demons were equal, none were the same, his assumptions would cost him his life. Being a demon himself he had an inside of the demon world, their rules, their laws and their traditions. "Listen, you may not like me, you see me as a rival to her affections, but I do care about her. And right now you need me" he reminded him. He knew Kichirou hated him and he wasn't too keen on him either, but right now they needed to work together as allies. Together they would protect her and keep her safe.
Kichirou sighed, he hated to admit it, but the wolf prince was right, two was better than one. He would tolerate a temporary alliance until morning, when her powers returned, until then they would be working together. He would feel at ease once the wolf prince made himself scarce "Very well, but if I sense you have ulterior motives and may harm her, I won't hesitate" he warned.
Kouga felt a pang of rage and hurt fill him, the distrust and the insult, though he knew it came from experience and ignorance. He hate that his demon nature immediately made him distrustful. He would never harm someone without a reason, he hated unnecessary violence and often avoided conflict. However, he would always protect his pack, and he would never harm people unless necessary. "No worries, once I know she's safe and the sun is up, I'll make myself scarce" Kouga huffed. He knew Kichirou didn't want him around, he didn't want him to corrupt InuYuki, despite her being a half demon.
InuYasha hugged her pillow in sulky silence, she was impatiently counting down the hours until the sunrise came, when her demonic abilities came back. Until then she was stuck in waiting out this painfully long absence, forced to endure the human condition. She had no idea how humans coped, knowing how vulnerable they were, it was both admirable and utterly terrifying. The only protection she had was the Tetsuigha and her robe of the fire rat, though she couldn't use the swords demonic energy, it still formed a barrier and protected her in other ways. She was immensely grateful for the barriers that Kichirou had formed, putting his mind and body to the limit, exhausting himself by working diligently through the night, keeping enemies out. She was mentally and emotionally exhausted, her anxiety at an all time high, her body was trembling, her stomach was in knots, she felt nauseas and her emotions were all over the place. She was too anxious to eat or even sleep, terrified of what would sneak through the darkness to kill her, what if her food was drugged or poisoned?
"Hey Inu, how are you holding up princess?" a familiar voice questioned, no wonder Kichirou wanted her to stay hidden. She was in the worst state he had ever seen, he could sense her through the walls of the hut. She was terrified, anxious and alone, closing herself off from everyone, including the villagers. He could only imagine how stressed and scared she was, having to rely on others for protection, at the risk that she could be killed.
InuYuki flinched, panic filling her as she recognised the voice, no; it couldn't be? What was he doing here? She thought he would be back at the mountain, having meetings with her brother, discussing their wedding and other matters. Why had he come here? She was trying so hard to trust him, he hadn't given her any reason to consider otherwise until now. But why would he come here when she was a human? Had Sesshoumaru informed him of her human night? Had he been lying to her the whole time? How was she supposed to feel? "K... Kouga?" she stammered in disbelief.
"Your voice still sounds the same, that a relief" Kouga hummed, he didn't know how these transformations worked, given he had never experienced it for himself. Being a full demon he never went through such a transformation. How much of her changed? Just her appearance? Her personality? Did her voice change too? But to his relief, she still sounded the same, which was a comfort to him. Kichirou really had kept her safe, using the most drastic measures to ensure she wouldn't be disturbed until morning came.
"Where... how did you?..." she panicked, how long had he been in the village? Did Kichirou know he was here? How had he gotten past the barriers that had been formed to protect her? Did Sesshoumaru send him? Did he know that Kouga was even here? How of all nights had he come to the village when she was at her most vulnerable? This had to be the worst timing possible. He couldn't stay here, she couldn't let him see her like this. Panic began to rise in her stomach, her mind whirling and her fear building, trying to keep herself calm.
Kouga sighed, he owed her an explanation and he could already sense the panic forming. She had every reason to be suspicious and scared, so he couldn't lie to her. "I was worried about you Inu, something in my gut told me you were in danger, Ginta and Hakaku sent me to check on you. Kichirou sensed me around the borders of the village" he explained. He wasn't able to settle at all, no matter how much he tried to distract himself with tasks, no matter how much he tried to bond with his friends. She was persistently on his mind, all he could think about was her, that she was in some kind of danger. Ginta and Hakaku told him to travel to the village, he wouldn't be able to focus if he was worried about her. So he had travelled all the way to see her, to make sure she was safe.
InuYuki pouted, conflict filling her, this changed everything, so far he had come to see her when she was still in demon form. He had paced their meetings and made sure she had time to adjust, though he liked to surprise her. The last time they met she sent him home with medicine, to help his people, a token of trust. Kouga had thus far done nothing to break her trust in him, showing nothing but patience, kindness and respect, he was even charming. However, this changed matters, she had never informed him nor implied of her human night, making sure to keep it secret. But why would he come and seek her out when she was a human, when she was her weakest? But then, he was worried about her. Her father had always harboured a curiosity for humans as her stepmother had called it. Showing a rare sense of empathy for humans, which caused him to fall in love with her mother. She had never met another demon who showed such an emotion, could Kouga be similar to her father in that sense? "I... I'm fine" she stammered.
Kouga chuckled "You can't fool me princess and you can't fool that priest either, I can smell the fear radiating from you. Your voice is trembling, you're scared shitless" he soothed. She was putting on a brave front to avoid how scared she actually was, trying to ease the concern of others. Kichirou knew how scared she was but instead of pressing the matter he left her be and allowed her to work on her feelings by herself. However, as a demon he could pick up things that humans couldn't. The scent of the salt from her tears, the scent of fear that was pouring from her, the overwhelming fear and anxiety. He wanted to comfort her so badly but he wasn't able to do anything. InuYuki panicked, damn his demonic senses, he would immediately notice that something was wrong. He'd be able to smell that she was a human, that her demonic blood was repressed. "You smell really sweet, like honey and spring blossoms... who knew you smelled even better as a human" he smiled. Her scent changed from when she was in demon form, in comparison to her human form, but was still intoxicatingly sweet. InuYuki felt her heart flutter, he was saying he liked the way she smelled? As a human? All her life she had been told she was disgusting, that her human blood made her smell strange, off-putting, like she was something shameful. Why was she so nervous? "You don't need to freak out, I wont come in and I won't make you show your face, when I see your human side I want it to be on your terms" Kouga soothed. She didn't need to worry about him trying to sneak into the hut, trying to coax her out, trying to reveal her secret. He knew how important this was to her, he just hoped he got to see it someday.
InuYuki blushed, why was he being so charming and why was she so flustered? She'd never had this sort of experience with men before, she'd always been used to their cocky, pushy and arrogant ways. Her brother used her as a tool to their clan as soon as she was old enough, making sure she was taught of her future as a bride. InuKimi was distant but at times loving, due to her being her stepdaughter from her husbands second marriage. She managed to convince her son to hold off on proposals until she was of age. Despite her being over 200 years old, the latter still saw her as a child in comparison, though she didn't fully trust her stepdaughter due to her human blood. Though like Sesshoumaru, she was offended by her supposed "promiscuity", for sleeping with a man while unmarried. She hated herself for being so emotionally weak, that she was so desperate for affection and approval, that she would be swayed by compliments. But then the only man to ever show her attention and affection had been Kichirou, the only man to be so sincere with his courtship of her. To have another man, let alone another demon was a surprise, for someone from her brothers world to have feelings for her, it was strange. "I'll hold you to that promise..." she mumbled.
Kouga sat outside the hut reflectively, she still sounded the same, but her scent had changed, it was as though he was speaking to a stranger despite having met her before. Trying to form an image of her in his mind, he could imagine she was smaller, weaker and more fragile. In comparison to demons, humans were susceptible to damage, it didn't take much to harm them or even kill them. They were at the mercy of demons and were wary of their power. Though he wanted to see what she looked like, he wouldn't invade her privacy. He could imagine how Sesshoumaru felt about his sisters transformation, given how eager he was for them to marry. Sesshoumaru made it clear he didn't approve of her relationship with Kichirou, he didn't approve of her love for him. He wondered how many times he'd bullied her when she transformed, how many times she had hoped to gain protection from him just to be pushed away. How often he'd shamed her, reminding her of her place in the family. Her appearance reminding him of his fathers second wife.
But InuYuki would still need his help, which was something he couldn't ignore. Maybe he could send some wolves every month she transformed, making sure they patrolled the village or guarded her hut, keeping her under protection. Returning to the mountain once her demon blood returned. He could imagine how scared she was, bringing back unpleasant memories. Her human blood had always brought her misery and trauma, her brother had disowned her, never protecting her or looking out for her like siblings would. He made it known from a young age that she wasn't accepted or wanted within the family. Nothing like how his pack acted towards their own, no loving affection, no loyalty, no connection, no trust. She'd raised herself, fighting for her life, evading harm and attacks, she had learned she didn't belong anywhere and that nobody would accept her. How many times had she been hunted when she became a human? This sort of fear didn't come out of nowhere, it was born of trauma, experiences and hardships. He could smell Kichirou nearby, still making his rounds, he wondered if Kichirou had ever seen her human side, if he had ever seen her transform. He couldn't help but feel a surge of jealousy, thinking of how much time it had taken to form this bond, how he wanted InuYuki to treat him the same way. He cared for InuYuki as much as Kichirou did, he had fallen in love with her the same way he had. He was just developing his relationship.
"Lord Sesshoumaru, isn't it that time where that half breed sibling of yours loses her power?" Jaken asked. The night where she became a human girl for one brief moment, showing the blood of the human princess their father married. Where she was helpless, seeking protection in order to survive the night. She was truly hopeless, asking for the help of others to protect her, otherwise she would be killed. If she still resided at the palace with Lady InuKimi, she would be protected and guarded. Instead she chose to run around like a rebellious fool and nearly got herself killed in the process.
Sesshoumaru glared, this was a matter that he didn't wish to acknowledge. How their father had never considered marrying that princess would lead to such a troublesome matter, bringing a half breed into the world. He was forced into the position of babysitting her, to prolongue her life all out of respect for their father. Another month had passed and she had become a human again, where she was as helpless as a newborn. She was reminded of her place and how compared to him she was a remembered when she was small, locked away from sight and protected by Izayoi until morning came. Up until Izayoi passed she had been protected, until she chose to run away from home. InuKimi and himself had tolerated raising her until she became too much trouble to handle and let her do as she pleased. "I do not wish to be reminded of such matters" he growled. He was surprised she had survived as long as she had, be it out of stubbornness or her instinct of self preservation. Many had sought out her life, by running her mouth and picking fights she made enemies wherever she went. His half breed sister whom somehow despite all the troubles she found herself in, had never been slain. When she showed her weakness, when she lost the sacred blood of their father, the only reason she was still alive.
"Aye milord, I merely meant, she has the protection of that priest, but perhaps that Prince Kouga may seek her out" Jaken pressed. He could sense this was a delicate matter that his master didn't like to be reminded of, but they could use this to their advantage with their current alliance. As a human she couldn't fight back, she had none of her DaiYokai powers, he could easily spirit her away. She had spent enough time in that cursed human village, making a mockery of them and choosing to be rebellious. If they chose to make themselves known, to teach her a lesson on defying her paternal family. She could be taken to the wolves mountain, she would be married and they would be mated. They would be rid of that cursed human priest, they could finally have her wed a demon like she was suited for. It was a golden opportunity. Sesshomaru raised his eyebrow, giving the imp a warning look, while he was impatiently awaiting their marriage, he wasn't so distasteful as to have the reputation and rumours that he encouraged such things. He would gladly hand over his half sister to the wolves if that was what it took, he would remind her of her behaviour, her manners and her status. But even he had limits. He didn't approve of that priest she was in a relationship, but he wasn't so petty as to kill him. The only thing he disliked about the priest was the control he had over her, seducing her into relationship. He would by any means assure she married Kouga, that she discarded her old life, but he wished to do so as conveniently as possible. Jaken shifted, he had angered his master and he needed to explain himself. "She's aware she cannot disobey you, but she still still throw a tantrum about this arrangement. If he were to kidnap her as a human, she couldn't escape. Then arrange the marriage when she is finally among the wolves, making it her new home". Lord Sesshoumaru had inherited his fathers title as family patriarch and lord of the western lands. InuYuki couldn't go against him as the family head and she knew it. She couldn't avoid this arrangement much longer, eventually she would have to accept her situation, he had found her a suitor and they would be married eventually, it was inevitable. Her foolish courtship with this human priest would come to an end, they would part ways eventually, it was inevitable. In her human form she couldn't fight, all she had was the robe of the fire rat, if taken to the wolves territory she would be trapped, she would have no choice but to marry him. Finally putting an end to this.
Sesshoumaru frowned, while he understood as a vassal, Jaken was as frustrated about all of this, he wasn't thinking rationally. InuYuki would lash out if anything happened to Kichirou, she would come at him for blood. The best they could do was separate her from the priest, pressure her into abandoning him and accepting she couldn't continue her foolish daydreams any further. Unfortunately he would need to involve his mother in this eventually to make her see sense. "While that would be easier, I doubt Kouga would attempt such a thing, he has morals and honour. He will court her until she finally wavers and gives in". Things were progressing, which was at least a relief to him, he'd heard the whispers. His sisters guard was lowering, she was becoming interested in him, attracted to the wolf prince. She was wavering, slowly growing closer to the wolf prince as he had hoped, soon she would choose him. But her connections to the human world were strong, she had forged a life for herself, she wouldn't relent that easily.
"So... we wait?" Jaken asked, anything could happen in that space of time, they couldn't be reckless with their waiting. Something had to be done.
"InuYuki knows she cannot avoid this engagement, she knows the pressure she is under and how she would be accepted among demons if she married him. Her desire for belonging is stronger" Sesshoumaru explained. She knew that it would just be getting worse, for the time being Kouga was merely visiting and courting her, trying to win her over. But soon, her stepmother would be involved, helping to arrange the marriage. He had preparations to arrange himself, making sure that everything was in place. She knew that if she married Kouga, she would gain more respect in the demon world, she would curry favour and she wouldn't be harassed. Kouga provided more protection than that human ever could.
InuYuki crawled from under the blankets, her silky black hair falling down her back. She knew she couldn't hide under here forever, she was bored out of her mind and yet she knew better than to leave the safety of her hut, what dangers would await her. She longed for company, she longed to be free, but she needed to put her safety first, so she had to find other ways of entertaining herself for a brief period. Searching around the hut for whatever she could get her hands on, there were ways she could sketch, using the paints and pencils in the cabin to keep herself occupied. If he was around she could have babysat Kaede. Maybe help Kichirou with the medicines of his hut and prepare some for later, but they all seemed tedious and pointless, it wouldn't make her feel any better and would merely distract her. She couldn't sleep, she was too anxious, her entire body was on survival mode, all she could think about were all the dangers surrounding her, of getting through the night alive. She was exhausted but she was scared to close her eyes, knowing what monsters hid in the dark waiting to kill her. She remembered the first time she became a human, when she was a toddler, the first time she was ever aware of her transformation, back when her life was happier and she was naive. How her mother beamed down at her lovingly, staying with her all night until she reverted back. She never treated her differently, she looked her exactly the same, telling InuYuki of how much she loved her, how beautiful she was and how nothing changed, how she was still her daughter and still precious. She kept her daughter entertained all night, making sure she was never alone and always safe. But she also remembered the passive cruelty, how the servants whispered and muttered. How many of them considered throwing her out while she was human to fend for herself. How they questioned how Princess Izayoi could love such a child. After her mother died when she became a human, she was acutely aware of the dangers around her, that she had nobody to protect her. Demons seeking her out, trying to hunt her down, taunting and mocking her, fending for herself, just trying to make it through the night. Unable to trust her demonic senses, for her blood had rendered her human, finding caves to hide in, trees to climb and other forms of protection so she wouldn't be killed. Unable to hunt for food no matter how hungry she was, unable to leave the protection of her sanctuary. One one occasion she found a temple while she was human, using the powers of the priests to shield herself, hiding out of sight, the owners unaware of her presence.
She had always been different, always unwanted, always isolated. The love her birth parents had shared for one another became her hindrance, her burden, her shame. She was never accepted in the world of humans for her demon blood, seen as a monster, a beast, a freak of nature. But then demonkind never wanted her either, she was a weakling, a half breed, unworthy, a fraud. She was always in the in-between of worlds, never truly able to fit into either. Her human blood made her a bastard to her brother, a stain on their legacy as DaiYokai, the one weakling among their pureblood status. Her demon blood made her untrustworthy and wicked in the eyes of humans, merely wearing a false mask of innocence before she turned into a monster and hunted them down. The brief period she had lived with her paternal family, she had been miserable and even lonelier than ever, acutely aware of how she was viewed, that she was only one of them due to her DaiYokai blood. Her brother never showed her love and kindness, only disdain and bullying. Her stepmother was kinder to her but still harsh, she would never be one of them, she would never be accepted. She was of noble blood, but she would never be enough for them, corrupt. She could never belong, so she made her own way, she forged her own path and tried to find peace within herself. She found meaning with Kichirou, a priest who loved her as she was, gave her sanctuary and accepted her. They both shared a mutual loneliness in the world, seeking a sense of belonging, someone who made her feel like she belonged. But now her brother was interfering because his reputation was at risk, suddenly she had value, after years of neglecting her, suddenly he was invading on her life. As the only female child of their late father, she had to continue their lineage through marriage, due to his current disinterest in such a thing. Forcing the responsibility onto her, reminding her of her place in the family, he refused to accept her decision to marry and mate with a human priest. So he had chosen her a fiancé, the demon wolf prince in order to continue a demonic legacy, believing he was the best choice for her. Though their DaiYokai lineage in his eyes would be tainted by a wolf demon blood, it was better than a quarter demon child. He would rather she marry and reproduce more demon offspring for their bloodline than taint it with human blood. The loneliness she felt, the isolation she felt, it would never desist.
"How you holding up puppy?" Kouga asked, she'd been awfully quiet for a while, but she wasn't crying anymore. He wondered if she had fallen asleep, but he still heard her moving around. He wondered what she was thinking about, how she was feeling.
InuYuki flinched, he was still here? She thought he would have become bored and returned home to his pack, but instead he was waiting this out. She was surprised by his patience, it was touching. But that still left her with questions, where was he? Wolves lacked invisibility powers, but they could camouflage, cloak and hide themselves, due to their hunting abilities. Certain types of wolf demon could even transform, but it wavered with every kind. "Are you spying on me? Where are you?" InuYuki snapped. She wasn't in the mood for any games.
Kouga chuckled in amusement, she was truly adorable when she was mad and it was hard to take her seriously "I'm on the roof". He wouldn't invite himself in if he wasn't welcomed, it wouldn't be polite, so he would converse with her from the roof. He'd slept in worse places before and the roof wasn't terribly uncomfortable.
InuYuki softened, he really was keeping his distance, he was keeping his promise and making sure to give her the space she wanted, respecting her boundaries. She had to admit he was surprising her, every time she thought she had figured him out, he kept surprising her. "Where's Kichirou?" she asked, he had been gone a long time. She couldn't ask the villagers and she was worried about him getting hurt.
Kouga couldn't help but feel jealous of her empathy for the priest, he was always on her mind. She was always thinking of him, worrying about him, trying to protect him. She'd truly fallen in love with that human. He'd never known that kind of devotion from anyone, it was different from the loyalty of his pack, the love of a woman. "Making his rounds, fighting off stragglers, making sure nobody enters the village" he hummed. He was patrolling the village borders dutifully, making sure the seals never got damaged or removed, killing off any demon that tried to get close.
InuYuki smiled, both of them were watching out for her, making sure she wasn't harmed. But somehow she still felt lonely, despite the fact that two men who cared about her so much were so nearby, like there was a wall between them. She couldn't let them in, couldn't let them see her like this, terrified that she would be judged, that they wouldn't love her anymore. "Kichirou is out there by himself?" she asked, what if something happened to him.
"He didn't seem pleased that I'm here, tolerating me at best" Kouga admitted, the sooner he made himself scarce, the happier Kichirou would be, but he wasn't going anywhere. Kichirou was protective, he didn't want another man trying to steal his woman, fighting for her. But he knew he was stronger than him, and he would need his help. But he made it known he wasn't welcome, trespassing on his domain.
InuYuki hummed, he was jealous, she wondered if Kouga had ever been in love before, if he had ever had a crush on anyone. Surely he had met other female demons before, wolves, other species whom had found him attractive. He was so smitten with her she wondered if she was his first love. He always seemed so happy to see her, he truly enjoyed the time they spent together, always smiling from his heart. She was Kichirou's first love and he was hers, without him she never would have learned to trust someone. "Hey Kouga? Are you bored?" she questioned.
"I mean the stars are rather pretty" he hummed, it was strange watching a starry sky with no moon, it was darker, more intense, a different kind of night. But then he at least had something to pass the time, free entertainment. He was used to responsibilities back on the mountain, taking care of his pack, hunting, political meetings, checking the borders. Making sure his people had enough food, helping the midwives and more. Being able to relax, have some fun and spend time with the girl he liked, there was nothing else he would rather be doing.
InuYuki smiled, he sounded like he was having fun, while she was trapped within the confines of the hut "I wish I could see them" she smiled. She loved her freedom too much, she loved being able to live her life on her terms. How much her human night took away from her, how much Sesshoumaru tried to control her, she hated it.
"It's a date" Kouga hummed, the moongazing on the mountain was the best, the views were unbeaten from so high up. She would enjoy such sights she had never seen before, and he wanted her to see them for herself someday.
Kichirou gripped his bow, so far no demons had entered the village, his barriers around the borders keeping them at bay, but he didn't know how long that would last. They were persistent, stubborn and angry. They were intent on hunting her down and killing her, but he wouldn't let them pass into the village. InuYuki was still safely sealed away within the hut out of harms way, she would stay that way until morning. Kaede was back in their hut, though he was worried about InuYuki, he didn't know what was wrong with her just that she didn't want to be seen. He cared about her as much as Kichirou did but she wanted to be alone. They were all waiting, counting down the hours for sunrise, waiting for the night to end so it could all be over, they still had a long way to go. Demons all trying their luck to see who would be the one to kill her. InuYuki's life had been at risk since the moment she was born, she was born with a target on her back that could never be erased, running for her life. "This is the first time she's become human, where she had someone who could protect her" he reflected. He was the first person she had ever trusted, ever relied on, ever truly cared about. Her own blood, her older brother never shielded her, leaving her to fend for herself since adolescence. Any other living family she would have as in laws neglected her, she had nobody she could trust. So she raised herself, she learned that the only person she needed was herself, hiding away, hiding her human blood, keeping it a secluded secret, guarding it with her life. He wished he could do more to comfort her, to erase the scars on her heart caused by the people who inflicted them. To put her mind at ease, to reassure her he would never let anything happen to her.
"Well, well priest, haven't you been busy?" Kouga teased, he'd been around the clock working, he hadn't stopped. He had better stamina than most humans thanks to his training, any normal human would have collapsed by now. When was the last time he ate or slept?
Kichirou glared, he had forgotten about the wolf demons presence for a while, putting it to the back of his mind. His gaze diverting towards Kouga, sat atop the hut where InuYuki was hidden. It seems his demonic senses had allowed him to find her faster than he predicted. He was getting some form of entertainment out of this, mocking him, but he wouldn't fall for his ploy. "Not all of us can sit around and waste time wolf" he scoffed, he had more than just InuYuki to protect, the entire village was vulnerable to demonic attacks, slaughtering their livestock, kidnapping villagers for food, killing for fun.
"Somebody's grumpy" Kouga teased, but then he did understand the pressure he had to be under, protecting his home. But then this was the most stressed he had seen the priest since they met, usually he was so stoic, calm and organised. He seemed tense, worried even, was this because of InuYuki?
Kichirou frowned "Since you've been guarding this entire time, I assume InuYuki is safe" he questioned, he had left his rival, a demon in charge of keeping her safe. He hoped he hadn't made a mistake in doing so, or there would be consequences. If anything had happened to her he wouldn't hold back, he would be sure to enact revenge on the wolf. He needed to know she was safe, that she was unharmed, his mind racing of the worst case scenarios. He had already lost his parents, making himself and his brother orphans, he couldn't lose her too. She meant everything to him, she was his family.
He could see the worry in the priests eyes, the fear that while he was absent the worst had happened. He sensed this came from a place of experience rather than malicious intent "She's riddled with anxiety, I can smell it coming from her like smoke, she's not going to be sleeping until morning comes" Kouga explained. This fear was instilled into her over time, coming from experiences and being hunted for sport growing up. She had never known family protection or care, she had been forced to become resilient and independent. She was forced to raise herself, Kichirou nodded, entering the hut, eager to see her.
Kichirou sat outside InuYuki's room, the bamboo door to her room shielding her from sight. He wondered if she was asleep, though that seemed impossible as she would never fall asleep in front of anyone she couldn't trust. He would have heard her breathing, her snores, talking in her sleep. She had to be hungry, he had prepared some medicine and soup for her, though she would be too scared to leave her room. Refusing to lower her guard or even show herself to anyone. However, he needed reassurance that no harm had come to her, he couldn't live with himself "Inu?" he questioned softly.
He heard her shift from within her room, as if she had been waiting for him to return, wishing he could see her expression, gasping in surprise "Kichirou?" she panicked. He'd been gone all night and she was still worried about him, scared of whether he had been hurt.
"I've finished my rounds checking the borders, there are seals in every possible entry to the village, a barrier guarding us until morning. Nobody can get in or out until it's lowered" he soothed. He had been efficient, no enemy could enter without him knowing it, he would sense any and all demonic presences and threats in the village. He would ensure the night went smoothly, InuYuki would make it through her human night without being harmed.
He heard her sigh in relief "You're using your energy and stamina to protect me until morning, you must be exhausted" she apologised. Though his priest training made him stronger and more durable than average humans, he wasn't superhuman. He could still be wounded, he could still be killed, he still had weaknesses. He wasn't immortal and he could still be hurt.
Kichirou smiled "My duty as a priest is to protect others from harm, if we cannot exorcise demons we seal them away. We protect humans from wicked demons but we can purify corrupted souls too. However, not all demons were evil, much like you. Meaning we can protect Hanyou like yourself and good demons from harm too" he soothed. He had known what would become of his life as soon as he was born with these powers, that he would never lead a normal life. But he would be able to protect the innocent and his loved ones from demonic influence. Now he could use them to protect the woman he loved.
"You're always so kind to me, but I'm too embarrassed and ashamed to let you see me like this" she whimpered, she didn't look the same, she lacked the demonic power she used to protect him. She wasn't the same girl he met before, he wouldn't recognise her, she had a different face, a different appearance. He had such a pure heart, kinder than any human she had ever encountered before. She was relying on him for safety, all because she had become a human.
Kichirou softened "InuYuki, you cannot help the way you were born, you cannot help where you came from. Your human side is as much a part of you as your demon blood. I love you, no matter what face you wear" he reassured her. She was born of the love her parents shared for one another, they brought her into the world because they desired a family. Touga had impregnated his wife but passed before he could meet her. He would love her no matter what face she wore, no matter what she looked like.
InuYuki felt her heart flutter and tears sting her eyes, he was so sweet to her, he had such a pure heart. She wished she had met him sooner, then maybe she wouldn't have hated people so much, then maybe she wouldn't have trust issues. Maybe if she had met him sooner she would still have an optimistic view of the world around her "You... you promise you wouldn't be hate me?" she mumbled.
Kichirou nodded, fate had brought them together, once possible enemies turned allies and then lovers. He had welcomed her into the village and made it her home. She belonged here, with him and she always would. Nothing could ever make him hate her "I swear" he promised.
InuYuki took a shaky breathe, what the hell was she doing? She'd never shown this to anyone and until now that had been a hill she was going to die on. She would live her life never letting a living creature see her human face. "Kichirou, would you please get Kouga from the roof?" she questioned shakily, she hoped they both understood the risk she was taking here, the sacrifice. If Kichirou knew her weakness he could easily harm her, he had more than enough power to do so. If Kouga knew her weakness, he could tell his entire clan, other demons would know and hunt her down. This could cost her life, but she was choosing to have faith in them.
Kouga awkwardly sat within the hut, it was homely, small and the scent of medicinal herbs were strong, they had a decent stock of food but given how poor the village was, not much. He considered bringing food from hunts to share among the village, at least so they would have enough provisions. Kichirou was a fine blender, he knew his herbs and he was knowledgeable about a great variety of them. He wondered how he got his hands on all of them, he had to go to rather deep parts of the woods where demons lurked to get his hands on them. Two beds, one for someone else, one for Kichirou and InuYuki, so they shared a bed? A flare of jealousy formed within him at the mental images "You uh... live here together?" he asked awkwardly.
"My brother shares the hut with us, but for InuYuki's privacy I sent him to stay with another villager until morning. He's also a priest in training" Kichirou explained. Before InuYuki came into their lives it had just been the two of them, training his brother to become a priest someday. Kaede had been a mere baby when their parents died, he didn't remember them much at all. He idolised his older brother, hoping to be like him someday. He was at first sceptical of InuYuki when they first met, due to his naivety and young age, but over time he came to care for her.
Kouga raised an eyebrow, so he had a little brother too? Did he look anything like him? He hadn't seen him around the village, wondering what he looked like. "So, you said she wanted to see me?" Kouga questioned, didn't she want privacy?
"InuYuki mentioned that if she was to show you her human form, it would be on her terms" Kichirou replied, he had never crossed any boundaries with her, he knew it was a sensitive subject. But now InuYuki wanted to share something deeply personal with them, a prized secret she had held close all her life. This was truly an honour, and the wolf better respect that.
Kouga huffed, was this priest trying to pick a fight? Because it was working "I'm not some jackass that would put her life in danger, this is something important to her. Believe it or not, not all full Yokai hate humans or Hanyou" he snapped. The divide between humans and demons had existed for generations, but then the hatred of the offspring from a human/Yokai love affair was even stronger. He knew the influence and reputation demons had, but he tried to be better. He tried to be the exception. He knew that InuYuki had trust issues due to her childhood, he wanted her to love him on her terms, to grow to care about him.
Kichirou frowned at him "You've made that clear wolf, what I am conveying is, what she is willing to show you. You must never share with another soul, you must take it to your grave. If we discover you have revealed her human form, both of us will hunt you down" he warned. How was he so smart and yet so foolish? How many times did he have to explain before he understood. This wasn't something trivial, this was a serious matter. He had to keep this secret with his life, if word got out about this, the risks would be grave. Both he and InuYuki would be unforgiving in their revenge and assure he would pay for the consequences dearly.
Kouga stared in confusion, before he slowly began to piece it together, his eyes widening in shock. Oh shit, when he was invited into the cabin this wasn't what he expected at all. Was she? Was InuYuki going to show them her human form? He couldn't help but feel excited about this. He would remember this moment for the rest of his life. Burning the image of her into his brain to always think of when he had to leave and return to the village. "My pack knows how loyal I am, someone kills one of ours, they pay with their lives as debt. The only people to know of this will be me, if and when she becomes my wife the only ones to know will be me, Ginta, Hakaku or her servant. Ain't nobody seeing her if she's not comfortable" Kouga pressed. If someone wronged or betrayed the wolf clan, they paid it with their lives, if someone hurt a member of their pack; they were hunted down and killed. If anyone tried to reveal this secret, they would know the consequences. Ginta and Hakaku were his best friends, his most trusted followers and guards, they would never tell a soul, they had been through hell and back together on multiple occasions. They respected and admired him too much, they knew the weight of this secret and how important it would be. They would protect InuYuki in his place when he couldn't. Any servant who would tend to her needs and care for her, would be sworn to secrecy, keeping her weaknesses under lock and key. Never speaking of it unless it was with Kouga in person. Kichirou softened, so some demons had morals, it was good to know, every demon he had ever faced had only been corrupt and wicked. Kouga was slowly changing his perception that demons could be good, well, reminding him of it since he met InuYuki. But given his alliance with Sesshoumaru, he was still sceptical. Given the pain and suffering he had caused his half sister.
They heard creaking, InuYuki walking across the floorboards as they heard the ruffle of blankets, she was finally ready to reveal herself. Coming out from her makeshift cave to show her face. She was hesitating, but they were patient, "You better not laugh, if you guys make me regret this I'll kill you myself" InuYuki warned. She wouldn't forgive them if they made it a joke, made fun of her or mocked her. She was mustering all of her courage, she wouldn't forget this. She would get payback if they took advantage of her trust.
"You got it princess" Kouga soothed, she was safe with them, they wouldn't mock her, they wouldn't tease or bully her. They would be as supportive as possible and reassure her she was still loved. It was only her outside appearance that had changed, she was still the same person she had always been.
"You have nothing to fear" Kichirou agreed, she was among people she could trust, people who cared for her. They would inflict no harm onto her, no enemies could see her, she was protected. If she wished to change her mind, she could do so, nobody was forcing her to make this decision. She was very brave and he deeply admired the sacrifice she was about to make. InuYuki took a deep breathe, shakily walking towards the door, her heart in her throat, trembling from anxiety. The room felt smaller, she felt like her head was spinning, her hands trembling. If Myoga was here, he would question if this was a good idea, making matters worse like the coward he was. Fidgeting with her fingers, her stomach in knots, wondering if this was a good idea. She had never done this before, she'd never let anyone see her as a human, she'd always hidden, always locked herself away, never let anyone see her human face. Making up whatever excuse she could not to be found, so people would stay away and not disturb her, protecting herself. Now she was about to show her lover and arranged fiancé her human form, they had better not make her regret this. She opened the bamboo grass door, pushing it aside to reveal her human form, candlelight illuminating the room. Kichirou and Kouga's eyes widened in shock, of all the assumptions formed in their mind, nothing could compare to the real thing. This was beyond any and all expectations they had. Both of their heats fluttering at the sight of her, Kichirou blushed, Kouga's mouth dropping open and his eyes wide, his tail wagging gently. She was even more stunning as a human than she was a demon, her mothers blood was strong, she was a beauty too. Her silver hair replaced with silky black hair that fell down her back in the same style, her tanned demon skin from her father changed to a paler complexion. Her golden amber eyes replaced with a dark brown, the same feline eyes and soft lips. But she was smaller in stature, but she still had an amazing body, the only other give away being her robe of the fire rat. Her ears, claws and fangs were gone, all demon traits had vanished.
"Inu..." Kichirou mumbled, trying to form words but they died in his throat, he'd never been rendered speechless by a woman before. He felt as though he was falling in love with her all over again. InuYuki shifted shyly, bowing her head nervously, avoiding their gaze. This girl, this woman had chosen him, deciding to become his woman and eventual wife. "Gods, she's even more beautiful than she was before, this woman is my lover? How did I get so lucky?" he reflected.
Kouga felt his eyes staring out of his skull, enraptured by her, no female wolf Yokai could compare to her, InuYuki had inherited some good genes. He never thought he'd be rendered speechless by any woman, human or demon. Yes she was gorgeous as a demon, but her human side was something else. She smelled like fresh honey and springtime, an innate sweet scent coming from her that was almost addictive. Her silver hair replaced with the most stunning black he had ever seen, her golden amber eyes replaced with intense brown. Confused as to why her demon family could cast her aside, Sesshoumaru hated this side of her? He hated this form? He was disgusted and humiliated by it? What kind of fool was he? There was no woman alive like her, she was truly a princess by birthright, whether people wanted to acknowledge it or not. He'd marry her in a heartbeat, human or demon form. Sesshoumaru being an oblivious fool had arranged him to marry his ideal woman.
InuYuki sensed them staring, self doubt forming in her stomach, their silence was even worse, she probably looked strange. Remembering all the cruel words directed at her when she was small, the judgemental glares of servants. Reminding her she didn't belong, that she was unwanted. "I know... the ears and claws are gone, I don't have fangs anymore" she muttered.
"You are perfect InuYuki, you are still the same person, your appearance has merely changed" Kichirou smiled, she was still the same woman he cared for. Nothing about her appearance would change the way he felt about her. Her personality shone through, unwaveringly herself, always loyal and always wearing her heart on her sleeve. "You are still my lover, my partner, I feel honoured to see this side of you". InuYuki softened, blushing slightly.
Kouga growled in frustration, breaking the silence as he spoke his thoughts aloud. "I don't get why her jackass of a brother can speak so badly about her, he makes it sound like her human side is repulsive. She's the most beautiful creature I've ever seen, human or demon. Is that imbecile blind?!" Kouga blurted. Sesshoumaru's hatred of humans warped his view of not only his sister, but fuelled his ability to insult her to such a harmful degree. The way he shamed her for it, abused and neglected her for it, despite it being something she could never control, or had any choice in. Hoping to marry her off to him to thin out the human in her bloodline, trying to erase any memory or trace of Izayoi from their family. Like it was something repulsive. InuYuki blushed, pouting, she had so many emotions pouring through her all at once, she didn't know how to feel. She knew Kouga wasn't being mean, he was just angry, but she agreed with most of what he was saying. But then she could imagine the things Sesshoumaru would have said to Kouga while describing her. Anything that would convince him to marry her.
"Please join us InuYuki, you are still locked in this form until morning, isolating yourself won't make it pass faster" Kichirou soothed. She was around people she could trust, familiar relationships. If she isolated herself she would only feel more anxious and she would become lonelier, at least with friends she could distract herself. InuYuki hesitated before approaching them both, sitting down between them in silence, avoiding their gaze. "The borders are secure, demons have attempted to get past my wards but failed, I'll need to make a second patrol soon but you'll be safe here" Kichirou explained. Nothing would get past him, he had made sure to prevent any intrusions into the village. InuYuki nodded, she appreciated all he was doing for her, how much thought he was putting in. Kichirou reached out his hand to stoke her hair fondly "I won't let anything happen to you Inu" he promised, he would protect her with every fibre of his being, he would gladly give his life to make sure she was safe.
"I know..." she smiled softly, Kichirou had proven again and again how much she meant to him, that she was irreplaceable to him. They had formed a bond, both lonely, unable to find their place in the world, but they found one together. He didn't demean her, he didn't undermine her, he didn't try and give her false hope. He understood her reasons to be scared, he comforted her and allowed her to express her feelings. Kouga pouted, somehow he hated how innately drawn InuYuki was to him, even as a human, how easy it was for them to flirt, to communicate their feelings, but then they had a bond. The look of affection in her eyes, how she so easily trusted him, her faith in him. She looked to him for comfort and reassurance. He spoke calmly and rationally as the voice of reason, telling her the truth while also being empathetic to her feelings. They were so well matched for one another it hurt.
Kichirou turned to Kouga, he was leaving again, but he better not try anything funny while he was gone. He was giving Kouga the benefit of the doubt, despite their rivalry "I'm trusting you with guarding the hut, to watch over her while I'm gone, if anything happens to her you will regret it" he warned. As a demon, he had keener senses and he would be a strong fighter, if anyone tried to attack he could protect her. If he failed, if he messed up, if he harmed or betrayed her, he would not only no longer be welcome in the village, but he would have made enemies.
Kouga understood his reasons, but he was sick of being patronised by a damn priest "I'm Prince of my own tribe priest, I'm more powerful than I look, I ain't no DaiYokai but I'm not a fool nor a weakling" Kouga scoffed. He deserved some respect, Kichirou was speaking to a royal, hell he was in the presence of two noble bloods. In comparison to them he was a commoner, and he needed to remember that. He'd been training since he was young, forging his powers, focusing his senses and becoming the strongest member of his tribe. Though in the demon food chain he was weaker than InuYuki's DaiYokai family, and other demons, he still deserved respect.
Kouga got to his feet, Kichirou was patrolling, making sure no demons or spirits entered the village to harm his lover. He'd made it clear he wasn't welcome, only tolerated and he wouldn't hesitate to throw him out if he had the chance. He had threatened him with the consequences if he failed to protect InuYuki, or make him regret trusting him. He could sense InuYuki was still cautious, anxious and adapting to the fact that the man she trusted most, and her fiancé had seen her human side. She had finally told someone, shared it with someone, a huge relief unburdened from her, and yet a whole new anxiety filled her. Knowing that if her enemies found out about this, she would be at a huge risk of attacks who would come for her life. And he was left in charge as acting like a demonic guard dog, shielding her from any who slipped through the cracks, his demonic senses would pick up enemies that Kichirou couldn't. He felt insulted at the fact that Kichirou saw him that way and he had a few choice words to say about it. They were unwilling allies for the time being, he knew Kichirou trusted him to an extent otherwise he wouldn't have left him with her. If he sensed or noticed that she was harmed in any way, he wouldn't hold back on getting revenge for her. But he was giving him the benefit of the doubt, putting faith in him, this was a chance to prove himself, whether or not he could be trusted as an ally to them in the future. Admittedly, Kouga respected that, he was looking past their feud not only as rivals in love but as a priest and demon, for the sake of InuYuki. "Well, I best watch the hut, don't want anyone trying to sneak in" he reflected.
InuYuki groaned irritably, she had no way of entertaining herself and admittedly having company had helped. She knew they had duties, they were supposed to be guarding her, but that didn't mean they had to leave her on her own anymore. She needed someone to talk to, even if it was about something utterly mundane or ridiculous, it was better than cowering alone in fear with her own thoughts. They could share a conversation, about anything and everything, so long as they didn't suffer through awkward silence. "I'm bored off my ass by myself, I need someone to talk to" InuYuki huffed.
Kouga stiffened, he didn't want to push her boundaries so soon after she revealed her identity "You... you're sure? I mean... you don't trust people... human or demons" he protested. The last thing he wanted was to mess anything up, he needed confirmation she was comfortable. He would never consider harming her, human or demon form, he wasn't a monster. But this wasn't about him, it was about what she wanted, he wanted her to feel as safe and secure as possible. She'd always been comfortable hiding herself away, handling this on her own.
"I let you see me like this, you said you'd never let anyone hurt me, you wouldn't say that unless you meant it and I can tell when someone is lying" InuYuki reminded him. If he truly cared about her, if he genuinely had empathy in his heart and didn't hate humans; then she would be safe with him, she would survive the night without a scratch on her, earning respect in her eyes. If she sensed he had malicious intent, she would have screamed for help and demanded he leave. Whether she liked it or not he was part of her life now, he was someone arranged to marry her thanks to Sesshoumaru. They could live amicably, they could get to know one another. She needed to learn to open up to him.
Kouga softened, he couldn't believe she had remembered. He did truly care about her, there was more to her than merely her identity as a human or a demon, what made her whole. He was taking her feelings into consideration and making sure she didn't feel too overwhelmed. The person that made up her heart and soul, understanding her world. However, he also wanted to make her smile, she needed to be kept in a positive mood to alleviate her burdens. "Or you can just admit you're lonely princess" he teased, spending an entire night isolated from companionship, he didn't know how she had coped, forcing herself away from any interaction just to protect herself. The desire to call out for help, to reach out for support, for protection, instead of sneaking around and stealing food. Pretending to be invisible just to protect herself, only appearing the next morning.
"Don't make me regret it wolf" she huffed, but the bite in her tone was gone. Her cheeks flushed with embarrassment and she was avoiding his gaze, acting all stubborn.
Kouga smiled to himself, returning to his place beside her, this trip had been worth it in the end, this would be his little secret, only his friends would know of this night. Seeing her show such a strong display of emotions he never thought she was capable of, the human blood influencing her. She wore her heart on her sleeve, speaking honestly. Though he wondered how Sesshoumaru would react knowing he'd seen her human side. Worried he wouldn't be interested in his sister, assuming he would be repulsed by her transformation. He was alone with her, once again Kichirou had left them together, leaving his woman in the company of another man. "Hey princess?" he questioned.
"Horny wolf?" she responded with a smirk, it seemed he was rather talkative this evening, he had something mischievous on his mind. She wondered what his tribe was like, what his people were like. She wanted to understand him, just to know what her brother had thrown her into. But calling him by his name just felt odd, instead she chose the latter, it had just become a nickname.
Kouga mocked hurt, her tone almost sounded flirtatious and teasing, but he tried not to get his hopes up. Dreaming that she would fall in love with him, it was too distant to tell. But he could at least earn her affections, continue to appreciate her "Aww, so mean to me and I went as far as to get you a present" he sighed. He'd put so much thought into this, debating on what would be ideal, what would make her happiest. Ginta and Hakaku had helped him gather the pieces to form it, putting time and effort into making sure it was perfect, taking notes on any and all creative input Kouga had. She'd already loved the flowers he gave her, keeping them in the hut where she could admire them. So she had to appreciate this, she had to understand this was a gesture of love.
InuYuki raised an eyebrow, what could he possibly give her? She knew all arranged marriages involved gifts of some kind, ceremonies and preparations. She found them all so tedious and fanciful, like she was being dressed up like a doll and paraded around for show. Why couldn't her marriage be done the way she wanted, instead of what everyone else wanted? She'd inherited meagre pieces from her parents after their passing, though great in sentimental value, gifts were not something she was used to. Her brother believed she wasn't worthy of them, that she couldn't be trusted and treating her with equal respect wasn't something she deserved. She had her fathers blade, the Tetsuigha which acted as her weapon and shield, keeping her demon blood in check and allowing her to protect Kichirou from harm. Her brother had previously attempted to steal it from her, claiming it as his own. However, InuKimi came between them, explaining that it was her inheritance; for Sesshoumaru to go against their fathers wishes was the highest form of disrespect. However, she was not legally given the blade until she was of age, when she turned 17, she came into possession. The robe of the fire rat, previously used by her father which acted as her shield, protecting her from harm, edited into the style of a Haori Jacket style kimono. Previously worn by her father in battle before he gifted it to Izayoi before his death. As well as her mothers rouge beni, the last thing she had ever given her before her passing. Though she rarely wore it, she treasured it. She wondered just what Kouga had in mind for her "A pelt? A bone? food?" she huffed, she could imagine the disgust on Sesshoumaru's face if she wore wolf pelt, amusing her immensely.
Kouga smirked, though he saw the humour in her suggestions, he had something much better. He reached out to take her hand, before he rummaged in his pelt to reveal a bracelet, slipping it onto her wrist delicately. Small black peals, beads carved from wood, real wolf fangs, a small wooden craved wolf and moon symbols etched into the wooden beads. Painstakingly crafted especially for her, a gift from the western wolf clan as a way of accepting her as one of them, as Kouga's fiance. This contained demonic energy from his tribe, hand carved by him, making sure she would always be protected. InuYuki was stunned into silence, this wasn't what she had expected whatsoever, this had to have taken hours, days, weeks to make. He was marking her as his mate and making their engagement official, but it was a gift worthy of her. She blushed, when she thought presents this wasn't what she assumed, making her feel guilty for assuming the worst of him. She'd never been given jewellery by anyone in her life, her mother died before she was old enough to inherit any, she had always been told that someday a boy would love her enough to give them as a courting gift. She wished she had managed to take some before she was dragged from her home, holding onto her mothers memory. She felt bad for teasing him, she didn't know how to accept kindness, it had taken her months to trust Kichirou, opening up to him. Not even Kichirou had given her something like this yet, given they were mated. But then, he was bashful and as a priest he wasn't allowed to spend donations selfishly, he wasn't allowed to fully act like a man, it went against his duties. But he always showed he cared for her, always putting her first, his heart was pure.
Kouga shifted, staring at the bracelet, running his fingers across it, she was the first girl he had ever done this for. It fit perfectly, just as he knew it would, it would never suit another girl the way it did her. Imagining her wearing this on their wedding night, his heart fluttered, this was the ultimate form of love to the wolf pack, a symbol of loyalty. She was already becoming one of them, she just didn't know it yet. "If you become my wife, this would have been a wedding gift; but we can call it protection for now" he hummed. Sesshoumaru would be pleased to know he'd made progress in their courtship, but then he feared how much he'd interfere. He wasn't doing this to create tension, he was doing this because he cared for her. It was the only thing that would prevent his enemies and other wolves from attacking her, those who would seek to harm her or claim her for their own. Once a female was marked by the leader of the wolf clan, nobody could touch her, she was his bride and future ruler of the wolf pack. She would bear the next generation of children that would lead, she was not only under the leaders protection, but his entire clan.
InuYuki raised her eyebrow, she got the feeling there was more to this than he was letting on. Kouga still held many secrets from her, but then she did the same for her own sake "Protection?" she asked. She was capable of protecting herself, she had been doing so all her life, she'd relied on herself since she was young. She didn't understand how a bracelet would ward off enemies? Was he patronising how strong she was due to becoming a human?
Kouga sighed, the demon world was complex, he knew this would be hard for her to understand, given she was abandoned, never educated in the politics of the demon world by her relatives, she was naive and ignorant. She was the prized princess of the Inu-DaiYokai clan, the only daughter of the late Lord Touga, Sesshoumaru had no children as of yet. InuYuki had no idea the dangers she was in, she had a target on her back which couldn't be removed. How many demons would come after her for even being affiliated with him? Those who would seek revenge or merely to steal her for themselves. He was from the eastern wolf tribe, but even with allies he had enemies, he was on thin ice with the western wolf tribe due to rejecting the proposal for him to marry the leaders granddaughter Ayame. But despite her feelings for him, he didn't return them, to which she was bitter about. Not all wolves got along, though they could be civil with one another, any of them may come after her. "I have alliances, people I can trust, if they see this bracelet they know it's from my tribe. It's been infused from the goraishi too, enemies can't touch you so long as you wear it" he smiled. Projecting lighting type attacks and even demonic shields to keep her safe, if ever she was in trouble, it would innately sense the danger and protect her. Though not as potent as the Goraishi itself, it was still immensely powerful. Her brother would see it and know she was under his protection, leading him to assume she had accepted the proposal, meaning he wouldn't be able to harm her.
InuYuki blushed, she had mixed feelings about this but she appreciated the gesture, so it was an engagement present, but also a form of protection, in a sense marking her. She was now labelled a bride to the Western wolf clan, Kouga's lover, he was making a bold move on her, deepening their relationship. Proving his affections for her were sincere, that he was intent on marrying her, in a way taunting Kichirou of the fact he wasn't going to back down. But she couldn't get rid of it, he'd made a brave gesture and wanted to protect her. Part of her knew deep down, there may come a day where Kichirou couldn't protect her, where something terrible could happen to him. "Uh... thanks... it's... I mean... it's pretty" she mumbled shyly, trying not to appear rude while at a loss for words. She had heard of the Goraishi, it was a sacred weapon among the wolf clans, it produced lightning. Every leader of the wolf pack had been handed down this present, only they were capable of inheriting it and wielding it. Kept hidden in secret until they were of age and worthy of wielding it. It was as treasured as her fathers blade, though not nearly as powerful, it was nothing to scoff at. He'd infused the power of the blade into a mere bracelet, she couldn't believe he'd forged such a thing for her.
Kouga smirked, he wouldn't do this for just anyone, his heart had chosen her, wanting to express to her how special she was "Gotta protect my puppy" he teased. Her wellbeing was always something he would prioritise, making sure she was safe. Going after the bride of the wolf pack was a huge insult, it was a death sentence, shame, insult or harm her and they would have all of them as enemies.
InuYuki huffed, well that didn't last long, his cocky attitude was back again, becoming the same guy she had met for the first time. Why did he have to ruin the moment like that? He had seemed sweet again just for a moment, making her believe that she could consider him as a lover someday. Thinking that he could be different than all the other demons she had ever met "I'm not your wife mutt" she reminded him coldly. She was already mated with the person she loved, her brother may not have approved but their love was real. Their relationship was as valid as any other and she would never leave him. This whole engagement was her brothers idea, she wanted nothing to do with it, treating her like a prize.
"Not yet" he reminded her, it was an inevitable future she would have to learn to accept, she couldn't run away from it. He hated being the bad guy in this situation, ripping apart the life she had found. Sesshoumaru wouldn't back down, he wouldn't accept an annulment or rejection, he would assure the ceremony took place. He may not have been her first love, but he would make her happy and he would never mistreat her. She was entering a happy life with him, to be treated as an equal. Worse marriage prospects may abuse her, demean her and treat her like a prized object.
"I love Kichirou, he's my lover, I chose him" she growled, it may not have meant anything to her brother or her stepmother, but it was her life. He helped her experience love for the first time, to truly care for someone. They went from being enemies, from having tension and merely seeing one another as a wicked demon and a meddling human. To each others beloved, two people drawn to one another. The bond they shared was real, one that took time and patience. He was precious to her, the first person she had fallen in love with, a pure and unwavering feeling that would never dissipate. Sesshoumaru would never understand that, he could never even comprehend what he meant to her, what they meant to each other.
Kouga's expression became serious, he knew this would hurt her but it was the painful reality. How many times did he have to explain to her, he knew how she felt about Kichirou, he knew they loved each other. You had to be a fool to believe it was anything other than love, he knew their relationship was as real as any other, he didn't hate humans, but he had an alliance with her brother, he was doing this to protect his tribe. Sesshoumaru wouldn't take no for an answer, he wouldn't accept defiance, if this engagement didn't happen, he may take it out on Kouga's clan. He wasn't willing to put his people in that kind of danger. "Don't think Sesshoumaru won't kill him no matter your feelings, he doesn't acknowledge your relationship, nor does your stepmother. I know you love him, I can see it that, I'm not a fool. I can sense that from the way you look at him, the way you act around each other. But can't protect you like I can, he's only a human" he warned. Sesshoumaru was already frustrated that they weren't married, that InuYuki wasn't within the wolf den and being exposed to her future as a pack member. Her stepmother would be insulted at the fact that InuYuki was married to a human, one she had been intimate with before marriage. He hated that demons saw the love that two opposite species could share was delusional that they looked past the barriers. But in comparison to the influence he had as a demon, Kichirou lacked. He could use his position to shield her, to assure nobody ever came after her again. They were DaiYokai, royalty among the demon world, hierarchy above all others, nobody could go against them, they had laws and rules. Everyone feared the Inu-clan, though few in numbers, they were immensely powerful. They were rendered gods and deities in the human and demon world. Sesshomaru would come between them by force, even if it meant destroying her happiness to do so, he cared little for humans, just like any other demon.
InuYuki stiffened, every word Kouga spoke breaking her heart just a little bit more, tears stinging her eyes as she bit them back. She knew that, she'd known that her whole life, but hearing it aloud hurt even more. Sesshoumaru hated anything that inconvenienced him, he hated anything that altered his path, he wasn't one to accept disobedience or rebellion, especially if it inconvenienced him. He would never approve of her love for Kichirou, or their bond, he would always force her to live he saw fit, acting like a noble demon. Forming her into the princess she was supposed to be, moulding her into the image their father would have wanted, or so he believed. This arranged marriage was the first step, if she didn't accept he would go to further measures. Kouga reached out, cupping her face, staring her down, he could sense the sadness and pain forming within her. His piecing icy blue orbs staring into her dark brown eyes, he hated the thought of her crying, he knew how hard this was for her. He wanted to protect her from her brother, from her whole wretched family so she was never bullied ever again. But he would make sure her brother never hurt her again. "Think about it Inu, I'm serious about you, I've never met anyone like you, for me this pairing is for love, regardless of your brother" he warned. He never made decisions irrationally, he always considered the wellbeing of his clan and how his actions would affect them. He knew that she was not only good for him, but she was good for his people. No other female wolf Yokai could compare to how he felt about her, no other proposition was interest him. He knew Ayame would be angry about this and undoubtedly her clan would be hurt by his rejection, but he had fallen in love with InuYuki, all he wanted was her.
InuYuki blushed, she was being confessed to by a demon, conveying that he had genuinely developed feelings for her. Kouga was getting bolder, the sincerity in his voice, the look in his eye, she could sense he wasn't lying. He was pouring his heart out to her, trying to express that by marrying him she would be making a good choice. She gazed at the bracelet on her arm, admiring it, the intricacy and design. He was a god damn flirt, but he had a good heart, he was a good man, Kichirou would be angered by this, first the flowers and secret visits and now this, but he loved her. She didn't want to make an impulsive decision, she needed time to take this into consideration, what her future had in store for her. She would be sacrificing so much in the process. "I... the bracelet is pretty" she mumbled awkwardly, she didn't know what else to say.
Kouga smiled, he wondered when the last time was that anyone gave her a gift, a meaningful gesture to show how special she was. She hadn't rejected him nor had she pushed him away, but she had taken his words to heart. She needed time to think, she needed time to figure out where she would go after this. "The pearls reminded me of your eyes, so shiny and intense. And so you never forget that you're my little puppy" he smiled. The hanyou princess who had stolen his heart, the girl he would never forget. InuYuki blushed, he really was a romantic at heart.
"So tell me about your mum, what do you remember about her?" Kouga questioned, he knew she had been someone very important to InuYuki. She was the woman who gave her life, nurtured and raised her, the first person to accept her for who she was. He couldn't help but wonder how her parents met, what led to them falling in love, their history.
InuYuki shifted, she had died when InuYasha was very young, so all her memories were centred around her childhood, protected in her mothers arms. She knew as a human her mother would have lived a relatively short life, but hoped that she could have been in her life for longer. Maybe if she had still been alive, she wouldn't have been as lonely. "She... she was very beautiful, she had silky black hair, she always smelled really nice. She had the warmest smile and she was always so kind" she reflected. She never felt safer than she did in her mothers arms, a place she could run to when she was scared, upset or confused. Her mother was always being courted, flirted with and proposed to, but she had married InuYuki's father; he never let another man near her, scaring off any competition. Even after his passing, even after his demise, she raised InuYuki as a single mother, rejecting any men that asked for her hand. Her heart belonged to her deceased husband and she chose to raise InuYuki alone, she knew anyone she married would abuse and neglect her daughter, due to her Hanyou nature. She isolated herself, living in peace and making sure her daughter was loved, she lived a happy life with her daughter until her last breathe. She taught her how to make medicine, how to live and how to be happy. She remembered upon her mothers frail health, her half brother and stepmother visited more regularly, she became weaker, paler but still loving and tender. Making it official that they would legally adopt her and raise her, she remembered crying and sobbing by her mothers bedside after she passed. She refused to leave her side, calling and begging for her mother, Sesshoumaru carrying her away, kicking and screaming for her mother. Sesshoumaru had ignored her pleas, leaving their home and taking her to live with them. She isolated herself from them, mourning on her own, crying for her mother and accepting her death. While Sesshoumaru had treated her as a pest, her stepmother was different. Instead of scolding her for her actions, InuKimi had encouraged her feelings, expressing that while she resented Izayoi for seducing her husband and causing their divorce; InuYuki's feelings were valid and she was rightfully upset, she had lost her mother, her guardian. InuYuki had been ripped from one life and forced into another, living with family who were strangers to her. She comforted the Hanyou as best she could and made sure she was raised as a lady, scolding her for her poor manners and wild behaviour, while still showing her some kindness. "She taught me how to make medicine, she taught me how to draw and she'd watch me play. There was so much more I wish we could have done together" she reminisced. She loved watching her mother make potions and medicine, a fast learner and eager to make them herself. She would always praise and support her achievements with pride.
Kouga smiled, her mother sounded like a wonderful woman, loving, accepting and nurturing, a good mother. She had lost her husband, lost her lover and instead of falling into grief, she picked herself up and put her daughter first. Raising her until she could no longer, leaving her in the care of her remaining family. He could see the love behind InuYuki's eyes as she spoke about her, she had clearly loved her mother dearly, losing her broke InuYuki's heart.
"Sesshoumaru and InuKimi adopted me as soon as she passed, I was taken to her castle and raised as a lady. Though to her credit, she wasn't nearly as bad as Sesshoumaru" InuYuki joked. She could still remember how grand and huge the palace had been, nothing like the one she had lived in with her mother. Surrounded by demon servants, all of them watching her with disdain. She never felt like she fitted in but she tried so hard to make a good impression. Kouga raised his eyebrow, waiting for her to explain further. "Sesshoumaru wanted nothing to do with me, all he did was shoot sarcasm, insults and berate me, he only tolerated me because we shared a father" she reminisced. He made it clear that he was only adopting her because of their father, that running around in the wild would only cause problems. She wasn't responsible enough to care for herself and they had a duty to raise her among her kind.
"So... Lady InuKimi wasn't the stepmother from hell?" Kouga questioned, he was curious of the first wife of her late father, what kind of woman was she? InuYuki didn't speak much of her, but of course she would be a demon. Raising another woman's child as your own was a huge ask, given she had no choice in the matter.
"She doesn't approve of my relationship with Kichirou either, but then she's like him, a hatred for humans. She's rather offended by the fact I slept with Kichirou before marriage, choosing to be involved with a human" she reflected. She like many other full blooded Yokai carried a disdain for humans, which carried onto her stepdaughter. She had hoped to make a princess out of her stepdaughter, to mentor and teach her. However, InuYuki's decisions in life often went against their code as royalty. "She made sure I ate a healthy diet, that I got enough sleep and I kept out of trouble. Unlike Sesshoumaru who wanted me to take bridal training and etiquette lessons as soon as I arrived. She made sure I had a childhood, or at least something close to it. She staved off lessons until I was 14, then she cracked down. She saw me as a child and didn't want to involve me in that sort of thing. I'm a princess of noble birth I needed to act like a lady, from the lineage I reflected. She made sure my demon blood remained in check, that I never went rabid on anyone. She made sure I learned to protect myself and stayed out of trouble. If anything she just got frustrated at having to mentor her ex husbands bastard" she hummed.
InuKimi had never acted like her mother, nor did she try to replace the one she lost, she knew that InuYuki was mourning and lost the only family she had ever known. She cared for her to an extent and mentored her, but she never fully trusted her stepdaughter, she had the same blood as them, albeit weakened. She didn't approve of her affection for humans like her late father, she didn't understand their affinity with such creatures, nor why they chose to live among them. She didn't approve of her being unmarried and involved with humans. She made sure that she had some semblance of happiness in her childhood, but made sure she was educated, giving her the best in literature, history, medicine and politics. But as soon as she was old enough she made sure she was educated and trained to be a princess. Plenty of habits that were hard to break and InuYuki hated that she still did instinctively. She made sure she had privacy during her human months and was never disturbed, if anyone tried to reveal her in human form or went against her wishes they were punished severely. But also made sure her demon blood never turned her feral either, she knew that InuYuki had no control over the potency of her DaiYokai blood like they did. So she made sure to have safety measures in case she lost control. Their relationship was complicated, but they were able to respect one another, InuKimi had never gone out of her way to isolate or mistreat her, she saw her as a legitimate heir, as legitimate her her son. She was as much a DaiYokai as they were, however, she was a half breed, she was a half demon and she was different from them. Knowing the man she loved had another child with another woman, it hurt her deeply.
"So how come you don't live with her?" Kouga asked, if she didn't harbour any malicious intent towards InuYuki or was never actively cruel towards her, why did she leave? She had a home, she had protection, she had shelter and support, although they may not have seen eye to eye, she could have belonged there.
InuYuki scoffed "I was never born for the noble life, it was way too stuffy and pressuring, my mum always had meetings and servants. You could never have any fun and it was all responsibility. I mean I learned something, but I was never happy" she reflected. She may have been a princess by birth legally, but she never belonged in that world, she was never made to feel like she was royalty. She was treated like her fathers bastard, despite Izayoi being his legal second wife. She remembered overhearing her mother speak with court nobles, always sending letters and always having priorities. She saw how stressed her mother became and how she tried to shield her daughter from the worst of it. She never wanted a life where she felt controlled.
"So it's just big bro who's the asshole?" Kouga smirked, Sesshoumaru had seen InuYuki as an eyesore from the beginning, reminding her she was an outsider who was merely tolerated for being their fathers daughter. He antagonised her every chance he got and made her feel like she had no voice. Kouga understood why she hated him so much, why he never felt like family to her, because he never treated her like she was. He was involving himself in her life after making her feel like she never belonged anywhere, which was very hypocritical of him.
"Got that right" she snorted, Sesshoumaru had been an arrogant jerk his whole life, raised in a wealthy privileged family his whole life, with wealth, status and influence. He was a brilliant warrior, lord of the western lands inherited from their father and a powerful godlike Yokai. He was seen as superior to all living creatures including herself, he was supposed to be worshipped without question. She was the commoner, she was the outsider, the girl raised among humans, she didn't belong. She may have been born a princess, she was legally given the title of such, but to Sesshoumaru she was no better than a servant.
Kouga could understand her personality now, why she was so protective of Kichirou and distrusting of others. She had never been loved by anyone her whole life, the only form of genuine love she had ever known was her mother. She had never met her father and yet was shamed for the blood he had passed onto her. The only family she had ever known had adopted her for the sake of honour, they didn't want their reputation tarnished. They never truly cared about her, they merely took her in as to respect Touga's memory, knowing they couldn't kill her and Touga had loved her. They tried to forge her into the image of their family, a noble princess, training her to become a member of the court and a political tool, they tried to turn her into something she wasn't, they tried to make her like them. She was never able to express herself, she was never able to be herself, she was forced to repress her identity to appease her brother. "No wonder you hate demons so much" he hummed in agreement. But then Kichirou would find himself involved in all of this, being married to Sesshoumaru's half sister was a very big deal. Sesshoumaru wanted him out of the picture, which was why he arranged Kouga's marriage to her. "Does Kichirou know about this?" he asked.
InuYuki shifted "He knows about my half brother, he knows about my stepmother, but not why I never speak to them, only that they were cruel to me. He doesn't probe, he knows it's difficult for me and he has his reasons" she reflected. She had never conveyed to him the extent of how cruel her brother was to him, reliving those memories was just too painful for her. Focusing on her traumatic past that she had spent decades of her life trying to forget. She merely told him she didn't speak to her family and she was better off without them. He knew it caused her immense sadness and pain, so he never pushed the matter.
Kouga hummed, so InuYuki kept secrets from him, but then she did so to protect him, Kichirou had no idea of how much danger he would be in when it came to Sesshoumaru. But instead of pressuring her to speak about her past, he respected her privacy; well he had to admire that the priest had manners. The first person in the world since the death of her mother who had loved and accepted her just as she was "So... Kichirou, he's the closest thing you ever had to family?" he questioned, no wonder she was so attached to him. The first form of positive affection she had ever known since she was young. This was both the saddest and the sweetest thing he had ever heard.
InuYuki nodded, she knew that sounded pathetic to someone else, but he was so precious to her. Kichirou understood her loneliness like nobody else could, he loved her the way she always deserved. He never tried to make her something she wasn't, he loved her as she was "He's all I have" she mumbled.
Sesshoumaru sighed wearily, his mother had called him back to her castle for reasons he couldn't understand. She never summoned him to the castle unless the circumstances were of a serious matter, she had always left him to his own vices, trusting his judgement. He didn't appreciate his focus being deviated, he was still trying to find out information on how the arrangement between his sister and the wolf was going. He knew Kouga had been visiting his sister regularly, courting her and causing the humans to become flustered, but he was taking his engagement seriously. It had to be something important, as usually she let her son live as he wished. "For Milady InuKimi to summon you, it must be important" Jaken reflected, his mother was of great importance and carried a powerful title. She had been the first wife of their father and was in possession of the Meido stone. Though she lived a peaceful and isolated life, she was involved in the political side of the demon world and had her own matters to attend to. She was a beautiful and formidable woman. Sesshoumaru huffed, he merely wished for the answers to be brought to light so he could leave. He didn't wish to be scolded by his mother for pointless reasons. She knew he could be trusted and she knew he was efficient, so why would she summon him?
InuKimi eventually approached, sitting on her throne quietly, peering down at her son curiously with golden eyes, her red lips formed into a curious smile. He had grown to resemble his late father so much, yet he lacked his warm smile and cheerful personality. He was growing into a powerful ruler and he had so much ahead of him, yet for all he had grown, he had not matured. Still resembling a sulking child, hoping someday that would change. "You'd think it would take more than a summoning for you to visit home every now and again" InuKimi teased. She may not have expressed it openly, but he was still her son, her blood kin, her offspring; she did harbour affection for him.
"I have more pressing matters at hand" Sesshoumaru retorted, after the disappointment of knowing his late fathers sword had been handed down to his half sister. He was left with Tenseigha instead, a blade he had no use for. He was arranging her marriage, so she could be of use to the family, marrying a man who would better reflect her and the family. Instead of living among the humans, the beings who had swayed their father and caused her birth. If she was to become a powerful soldier, if she was to become a princess worthy of her title, she needed to live among her kind.
"Such as meddling in your half sisters love life?" she smirked, he took the big brother role too seriously. Ever since her birth, he had been in a sulky mood, angered that his father had a daughter with a human woman. While she too harboured animosity towards humans, she didn't harbour the same hatred towards InuYuki. She was as much a noble as they were, her mother was a royal, and she was a royal through her father. She was a spirited girl and she had potential, she was just adapted to living in her mothers world, not theirs. She did wish to see her stepdaughter again, hear of her life changes and how much she had grown.
Sesshoumaru scowled "She's of age to marry, as the family head I have every right to find her a suitable mate, one that will reflect well on the family" he reminded her. She was the only daughter, she was expected to marry a husband of their choosing and continue the family line. Thanks to their father passing before more children could be born, it was left to them. InuYuki's judgement was clouded, she had lived among humans for too long to understand the consequences. So she needed to be led in the right direction to fully understand.
"I'm aware of the differences between you Sesshoumaru, by demon law she is of age to marry, she's 150 after all. But by human law she is merely 17, she's still too young to marry, at least by a year. She's indifferent to romance unless you count that obsession she has with that human priest. She's just a girl" InuKimi pressed. InuYuki and Sesshoumaru may have shared a father, but their hearts and souls were completely different. Where she had heart, self awareness and intuition, she lacked maturity and responsibility; but she was younger than them so it was expected. Where Sesshoumaru had maturity, responsibility and patience, he lacked compassion, emotion and perception; he could learn a great deal from his half sister. She too didn't agree with her stepdaughters courtship of that human, she knew it came from a place of immaturity and young love.
"She's of age, she may act like a spoiled brat but she's smarter than she looks, she's aware she can't hide forever. She has responsibility as the only daughter of our father. You went through all the trouble to give etiquette lessons to your stepdaughter" he huffed. She wasn't a child anymore, by demon law she was an adult, and she needed to be made aware of that fact. She was intelligent, she was merely rebelling against the inevitable. They had generously adopted her into the family instead of abandoning her to fend for herself after Izayoi passed. Izayoi herself came to them and asked them to care for her daughter as her time was growing short. They honoured her last wish by taking in her daughter.
InuKimi sighed "She was always of noble birth through her mother, she was always going to be raised as such after she was placed into our care after Izayoi's death. I was merely doing what is expected of our family". InuYuki was born a princess not only through their father, but also through her mother, both had royal blood. Her mother may have been born a commoner but she became a princess after finding wealth. No matter her situation, InuYuki was a princess and Sesshoumaru needed to accept that. InuKimi had merely made it official when she adopted the girl, making sure she was aware of her families status and what her future held. She never hid anything from InuYuki had told her the honest truth. But she was less abrasive towards her, even cautious about certain information she was too young to understand.
"I'm not naive of your hostility towards her, after father remarried that woman, then having to raise the daughter of his second wife" Sesshoumaru reminded her. The shame of adopting your husbands second child, the half breed daughter of a human woman. By demon law their marriage was not legal making InuYuki an illegitimate child, shaming their family. InuKimi had been deeply in love with Touga, her husband, someone she shared her life with for decades until their separation. He had seen the coldness she had on occasion shown towards InuYuki and yet she was never actively cruel towards her. He didn't understand how she could care for a child that was not hers.
InuKimi shot him a cold glare "Dear son, your father and I had reasons to divorce for personal reasons. While I do not share his fondness for humans, you would do well to watch your tone. I don't hate your half sister as profusely as you do, while she is a reminder of your fathers ex wife, she's still one of us" she scolded. Sesshoumaru's immaturity showed by his response, his lack of awareness to the bigger picture of why their marriage had never lasted. He had never truly healed or recovered from his fathers death and projected his grief onto InuYuki. She had loved Touga, he had been her mate for centuries before they parted ways amicably, their love soon wavering, the same affections he once held for her, soon faded, as did hers. They had sensed the romance slowly ebbing away, the same tenderness and loyalty they once shared began to waver. They still cared immensely for one another, but once their son was of age, they amicably divorced. It would only lead them to become miserable later in life, they shared a passionate love for one another, but it soon burned out. Choosing to end their marriage on good terms. So she could continue to rule and raise her son, while her husband remarried and lived a happier life, she wanted what was best for him and she needed to heal. He still remained present in their lives and they still had a good friendship. Though she would always love her husband, missing him profusely, she would not tolerate slander of him. He had merely followed his heart and chose to be with the woman that made him happiest, spending his later life with her. She wasn't fond of Izayoi, but then she didn't share an affection for any human, why would she be happy that her ex husband remarried a human? But then Izayoi's daughter was innocent, why should she be blamed for her parents actions? She may have only been a halfling, but she was still an Inu-DaiYokai. "Now, since you are so persistent of your sister marrying, whom have you chosen as her supposed mate to replace the human she is infatuated with?" InuKimi questioned. She wouldn't tolerate him choosing a man who would mistreat her stepdaughter, despite his hostility for her, she had say as the head of the family. If her stepdaughter was to marry, she would be with someone better suited for her who would make her happiest.
"Prince Touga of the wolf demon tribe, he's been seeking a mate persistently for some time, InuYuki is of age and he's already smitten with her. I believe we can convince her to wed him and marry her into the clan. Though their offspring will be of mixed blood, the human within the bloodline will be erased over time" he explained. He had some proposals from the Eastern wolf tribes elder, asking for the hand of his granddaughter Ayame to which he had rejected. Despite her harbouring affection for him since their adolescence. He had taken the opportunity to cement the alliance by offering InuYuki's hand as a replacement. By marrying a demon, their children would be quarter humans, if their child married another demon, they would be one third human and so on, erasing the human from their family.
InuKimi raised her eyebrow "And how does InuYuki feel about you meddling in her love life? That girl has always had the same persistence and stubbornness of your father. She won't agree to such a thing" she reflected. The wolf demons were lesser in status than themselves, but they were of the same species of canine demon. She had heard that Prince Kouga had become infamous for his strength and leadership, good qualities in a husband. For him to have become smitten with her stepdaughter in such a short period was also promising to their future together. However, InuYuki was as stubborn as her father and wasn't easily manipulated, she was a very independent spirit. She was so much like their late father it was uncanny. She wouldn't be pleased at this arranged marriage.
Sesshoumaru frowned, she was making matters difficult but he persisted, she would soon understand this was for the best. "She's naive, she's not old enough to understand her position in the family and why this is important. She's better suited to Kouga than she is to that human". They had her best interests at heart, her position in the family would be better suited for her to marry into the demon world. Her demon blood would be wasted among the humans. She would soon understand that she would never belong among the humans.
InuKimi smirked, so she was making this difficult, but then she understood her reasons why. She was used to living under her own terms, for someone else to change that would upset her. But then she was still so young, wearing her heart on her sleeve "She's sulking..." she chuckled. But then she would outlive her human mate, she would watch him die and shrivel while she remained young for centuries to come. Her demon longevity compared to humans was immense. Though she would perish before herself and Sesshoumaru, she would live an immensely long life. "...I already sense she's unhappy at this arrangement and doing all she can to get out of it", maybe she would need to visit her stepdaughter and speak some sense into her.
"I assume you don't approve of my choice in suitor for her" Sesshoumaru questioned, he had come to her for guidance and advice hoping she would understand his thoughts. The last thing he wanted was his mother to become a problem in all of this.
InuKimi's expression formed into surprise "He's closer to our species than anyone else you would have in mind, though not DaiYokai he's still canine. He'll make her a fine husband, in time she will realise he's the right choice. We need only arrange the marriage, mating and make it official. Whatever happens in between is up to them" she explained. He had made a good decision with her future fiancé, they were of the same species, although different types of demon, they were both canine. Their genes were similar which would prove beneficial. Though if their children could transform, they would be smaller in dog form they would still be larger than other demons. They would have unusual and combined demonic powers too. However, she wouldn't meddle in their marriage and allow them to work it out for themselves and she would ensure her son did the same.
"He's surprisingly strong for a wolf demon, he's the son of the clan leader, he has noble blood but of a lesser descent. He's the best choice for her and he's a suitable match. He's already marked her as his and there is talk among his clan" Sesshoumaru pressed. He was the strongest of his clan, he had earned his position in the ranks and many demons of his stature couldn't compare to him. He was respected by his clan and many looked to him for guidance. For their situation as demons, he would prove to be a good influence and a beneficial ally. For him to have marked InuYuki was a good step, meaning she couldn't run away from the arrangement and no other demon could claim her.
"I'll have to send wedding gifts" InuKimi chuckled, wondering what choice of gift would make her stepdaughter happiest.
