Chapter 3
Lena stands at the threshold of Kara's apartment, a bundle of nerves. It's been over a week since she last saw Kara, who has been inexplicably absent, with no word or visits to explain her disappearance. The quiet of the hallway amplifies Lena's growing worry. She needs her best friend now more than ever, especially with the chaos that's recently unfolded in her life and the unsettling visits from Supergirl. Lena is confused and concerned about Supergirl's sudden appearances, and she desperately needs to talk to Kara about them. The silence between them feels unlike them, and it presses urgently on Lena as she raises her hand to knock.
The door swings open and Kara stands there, a look of startled surprise crossing her features. "Lee..na, what brings you to this neighborhood?" Her voice falters slightly, nearly crossing the line that separates her dual identities. Here, she is not the poised heroine of the city, she is merely Kara. And Lena is not a lover from clandestine nights, but a confidant in daylight.
"I've been worried about you," Lena states simply as she steps across the threshold into the cluttered space of Kara's living area. "Is everything alright? You haven't responded to my messages." Her eyes scan Kara, seeking signs of the woman she knows beneath the façade of disarray.
"Oh… yes… it's just work… it's been a bit stressful. Tea?" Kara's reply comes out rushed and jagged as she retreats to the sanctuary of the kitchen without waiting for an answer. Lena follows with a concerned gaze, noting the unusual dishevelment of Kara's appearance. Dressed in baggy sweatpants and an oversized t-shirt, her hair messily tied back, and her usually vibrant skin pale and drawn, Kara looks a shadow of herself. Her eyes, rimmed with the dark circles of exhaustion, betray her weary soul.
Kara's hands tremble visibly as she fumbles with the kettle, spilling water as it pours. Lena, driven by a mix of concern and resolve, steps closer and places a gentle hand on Kara's shoulder. "Kara, is everything okay?" The intensity of her touch prompts Kara to inhale sharply, a clear sign of distress.
Consumed by a wave of misery akin to a hangover, Kara's body aches profoundly. Her spirit, drained by recent excesses of the red kryptonite, recoils at the proximity of anyone, even Lena. "You need to leave, Lena," she manages to say, her voice a whisper of despair as she turns away, letting Lena's hand fall away from her shoulder.
"Kara…what's wrong?" Lena's voice is laced with bewilderment and hurt as Kara's sudden coldness creates a chasm between them.
"Go, Lena, please leave." Tears well up in Kara's eyes, her voice cracking under the strain. Her next words are a shout, fueled by a cocktail of pain and fear, "I said you should GO!" Lena, stung by the harsh dismissal, snorts in a mix of anger and hurt, turning on her heel and leaving without a backward glance.
As the door clicks shut, sealing her solitude, Kara stumbles to the bathroom, succumbing to the nausea that grips her. She vomits, the physical purge mirroring the emotional turmoil within. Feeling like the vilest creature on Earth, she punches the floor in frustration, cracking the tiles under the force of her despair.
Her mind races, seeking refuge in the familiar yet destructive embrace of the red liquid. The vial sits ominously on the counter, promising oblivion. Just one last time, she tells herself, then no more.

Lena wipes the last tears from her cheeks as she enters the elevator to her penthouse. Kara yelled at her, rejected her. She only wanted to be a good friend, to understand what was wrong with Kara. But once again, she was pushed away by someone she loved. At the end of the day, she is just a Luthor to Kara, just someone Kara doesn't trust. Even for Supergirl, she is just someone you have sex with and then leave. She steps into her apartment and pours a glass of red wine. She swirls the red gold in the glass and takes a sip. Lena closes her eyes as she hears that dull thud again. There she is.
"Lena," Supergirl wastes no time, crossing the distance between them in a few steps and kissing Lena hungrily. "Supergirl…" Lena leans back slightly, looking into the blue eyes of the blonde superheroine. The lightness that she usually sees during these visits—whether in red-blue or black—seems gone. There's a heaviness in Supergirl's expression, a silent plea. Lena thinks she sees a flash of red, but doubts her perception. It's dark, perhaps just a reflection.
"Lee…" Supergirl murmurs while peppering Lena's neck with wet kisses. "Please. Let me feel you." Lena sighs contentedly as Supergirl's hands roam her body. They kiss, searching, craving.
Kara feels lost. This emptiness reaches for her again. She opens her eyes and looks deeply into Lena's green ones. Those eyes that seem to peer into her soul. A calmness returns to her mind, a calmness Kara has longed for days. "What do you need, Supergirl?" Kara takes a deep breath, filling her lungs with the unique scent of Lena. "Let me feel something, Lee, please," she murmurs, and Lena gently strokes Kara's hair. "Whatever you need, it's yours."
Kara sinks to the floor and pulls Lena closer by her thighs. She lifts Lena's dress and traces her nails over her legs. She kisses the inside of Lena's thighs, placing Lena's left leg over her right shoulder. With one last upward glance, Kara seeks permission to taste Lena. Lena nods, and Kara begins to lavish Lena with her tongue. She licks and sucks before pushing her tongue inside. She repeats the motion several times, feeling Lena's legs weaken. Lena moans and sighs, her hands buried deep in Kara's hair, pressing her pelvis forward to increase the friction. Kara blows her icy breath over Lena's clitoris, then penetrates Lena with two fingers while continuing to suck and lick.
The world narrows to the space between them, every touch a word in their silent conversation. As Lena responds with increasing urgency, her breaths catching in her throat, Kara's cool breath contrasts with the warmth of her actions, driving Lena towards a precipice of release.
It isn't long before Lena comes loudly, collapsing onto the floor beside Kara, who catches her and draws her into her lap. She strokes Lena's back and kisses her temple until she can breathe normally again.
"Will you let me touch you today?" Lena asks, looking hopefully into Supergirl's eyes. "Maybe next time," Kara replies, her voice tinged with regret as she helps Lena to her feet. With one last apologetic kiss, she adds, "I have to go, Lee. I'm sorry," before taking to the sky once more, leaving behind a trail of confusion and longing.
High above the city, Kara feels the tremors return to her hands, a stark reminder of the fleeting nature of her respite. As she lands in her apartment, collapsing onto her couch, the realization that this must end crystalizes with painful clarity. This was the last time, she assures herself, a promise whispered into the solitude of her darkened room.
