Eli crawled in my bed, wiggling down under the covers. I showered and dressed for bed. Narnia was calling me moments later. I shielded my call from Eli. The last thing I wanted was for him to hear anything that was going on outside the walls.
"He finally gave you, his blessing?" He spoke sarcastically.
I turned away from Eli. "Something like that, he made a stipulation. I exceeded expectation."
"What was it if you do not mind me asking?" I explained what I had done today.
"Chet." He laughed in his throat. "Well, do come by tomorrow when you are done. If you need someone to watch Eli for you, we have an on sight childcare center."
I crossed my arm, propping my phone hand. "That would be up to him, I personally do not trust anyone around him. He is watched by me and won't leave my side for anything. He is currently nestling in my bed."
"He might benefit from being around other children throughout the day. Right now, all he has is you and those much older than he is. Being around those his age and going through ruffly the same things might help him."
"I hope you are right; I just worry, you know?"
"While I do not understand fully, I do get it by what I have seen." I smiled a little bit. "Henri will be most excited to learn you will be swinging by."
"Leave it a surprise. I want to see his reaction. I know he has been stressing slightly."
I heard a small snicker. "I personally cannot wait to see you again."
"Nari, you have a blood lab, right?"
"We do."
"Have you tested their blood yet?"
"We have samples, but we need yours to do a full comparison."
"One last thing." I sighed. "Balam had a sample of my blood, it went missing. This school is like a magnet for those trying to infiltrate it."
"How much blood was in said sample?"
"Half vile. We still do not know how or who took it. If it was a spy, or it was a complete inside job."
"Well Vi, get ready for a blood war. I will see you tomorrow, you have much to learn." He hung up.
I resigned from school first thing in the morning, teleporting to the gates of border patrol with Eli. Surprisingly enough, he was more than okay with coming. He packed all his games and extra batteries, and the cookies we made late last night because neither one of us could sleep. They let me in, and into the lobby.
The woman at the reception desk looked up and back down to her computer. "Can I help you?"
"Yes, I am here to see Narnia."
Her eyes narrowed. "No one comes to see him."
"Well, I just became that someone. I am joining border patrol today."
She smirked. "Are you now, you look a little to dainty too…" She smiled.
"Dainty to what? Fight? Lady, I am expected, I talked to Narnia last night?"
"Did you now?" I turned; Fenrir had stalked up behind me.
I smiled but dropped it. "Yes."
He leaned in, one hand on the counter. I leaned back a little, he was a little too close for my comfort. "Long time no see, Violetta. He said you were coming so I had to see for myself. We are to be field partners while you train."
"Oh, well I was not made aware."
"Get away from my mom." I looked down, Eli was glaring at him. His eyes had changed, why did they look like that? I pushed Fenrir back and picked up Eli, hiding his face to my chest to hide his eyes.
"Your scaring him, Henri would not approve of this, and I am sure Narnia is waiting."
"Right, childcare. It is one level above, but we must head below. To the interrogation rooms and labs."
He walked slightly hunched, hands in his pockets. His green jacket draped off his shoulders. He had a whole other person to be, that had to be a difficult task. Fenrir took me to the childcare area; it was all separated out by age. Fenrir tapped his badge to the side door panel, it clicked, turning green.
I put him in with the five to six age group. They were playing on the floor and having fun. Eli looked around; his nose crinkled. He walked to the table and got his game out. The demoness watching over the children came up to me.
"Hello, I am siren. Anything I should know about Eli before you go?"
"Um, don't take his game away. He is having power processing issues. If you see him looking at the walls, he is seeing everyone on the other side. He does not take naps, and he does not like being touched by others. No allergies, and here is a list of contacts. He also has a phone to contact me if necessary."
"Okay, we look forward to having him with us."
He looked up once, glaring at Fenrir, his eyes. I walked up to him. "Eli, I love you. Be good and have fun while I am gone. Be a little kid again."
He smiled. "I will. Go be my hero, mommy. Don't let that jerk push you around."
I nodded. "Never, he just has an interesting personality." I rubbed his head.
I left him at the table, smiling as he played his game. When we reached the elevator, he shifted into Narnia. He put a hand on my shoulder. "Do not worry, those rooms are secure, and the teachers are handpicked from birth for the job."
"His eyes, did you see?"
"I did. We tested a theory, and it is transmittable but not nearly as strong. It is like half of what it would be if it were purely your blood."
"Narnia, you didn't."
"We took a little of Baal's blood and gave it to a death row inmate. It worked, but the eyes were not as black as Baal's. He used Eli to generate blood."
"He used… I could murder him."
"His blood line ability manifested suddenly; I think it has something to do with that. Lab first, we need to know what exactly is in your blood, and what we are up against." The door dinged and he guided me to a room, the man drew my blood with wide eyes.
"I know, it is weird. Stop ogling it."
"It's thick, how does it move through your veins."
"Like a liquid, Narnia, I want to know everything in it after it is processed."
"Of course. Here are the other samples."
In each case it enhanced the demons' abilities. The blood was not as dark as mine, but it had changed properties. Healing was advanced, increased mana pool. It also seemed to vary from demon to demon based on any bloodline abilities. A few more floors down, he showed me to a room.
Henri stood staring through a window. "Your late, your never late."
"I brought someone with me."
"Just who." He turned. "Could be… Viola. What are you doing here?"
"I am here to join you. I just need to be home for dinner at night."
The window was banged on, I jumped. Baal was up against the glass, staring though. A leather mask on his face. "He cannot get out, do not worry."
"He is trying to say something." Henri pressed a button.
"You're there. I feel you. I did what you told me." Henri clicked the button as Baal hit the window.
I winced; Nari slipped gloves on. "He has been asking for you, calling you master."
"What's wrong with him?"
"The blood or the fact you never gave him a release command. We are not sure; he won't talk past what he did, but he knows you're here. That's curious."
Henri crossed his arms. "If your squeamish, you might not want to watch."
I grabbed Narnia's arm. "What are you about to do?"
"Interrogate him for more information."
I looked at Baal who had one hand on the glass, banging his head against it. "It might be more productive if I tell him too."
"Well, that takes all the fun out of it."
"Narnia, she might be right. She might be able to command it like before. Otherwise, it is rinse and repeat information like it has been for the last few days."
"That could put her in danger."
I scoffed. "I do not know if you have noticed, but I can control these demons. The town, the battlefield, the three in his castle and him. They all have one thing in common, evil in the heart. Whether the gem or the blood."
"Not a good idea, you're not officially a part of the organization."
"Actually." Henri held up a badge. "I had a feeling she would come around. She was enrolled the day after we brought Baal in."
He handed me the badge. "Fenrir will be in charge of training you, for now, go in there with Narnia." I grinned. He used one of the photos from the Deviculum. I did not realize so many pictures had been taken. Someone took this shot as I was standing and staring at something. Why did it say Princess at the bottom?
"Princess Violetta?" Narnia was looking over my shoulder.
"Yes, Sullivan's request. Silly I know, but it was a stipulation."
I chuckled. "Oh, my devi. This man has too many ups and downs. He was crying over this, trying to get me to stay by him." I shook my head. Made me wonder if he was making sure I was dead set on being a part of this.
Narnia rolled his eyes. "Anyways, follow me."
"Right."
I followed behind him into the small room, Baal stepped back at the sight of Narnia. His eyes landing on me, they turned black. His grin was off setting, his heart beat low and rhythmic. He stepped closer, and Narnia put his hand up.
"That is close enough, or should the Lord of Thunder feel the lightning?" I looked up, Narnia had a small device in his hand.
"You came, it was about time master. I did what you wanted, but they did not see it that way."
"Humor me, why are you calling me Master."
"I can feel you, when you're mad, sad. It is like you send a warning pulse to not come near."
My nose crinkled. "Weird, but okay." I summoned two plastic chairs and a plastic table in the middle of the room. I sat in the one closet to the door. "Sit, we have a lot to discuss."
He took a seat. "You are so much nicer than Narnia. He's been beating me with a smile on his face. He takes such pleasure in tormenting." Narnia stood behind him, arms crossed.
I summoned my sketch book. "I will ask you a string of questions, and you will answer truthfully. I can tell if you're lying to me. If you do it, will greatly upset me, and I will hand you over to Narnia. First, what color is this book?"
"Brown." Green straight forward lines.
"Now lie about what color this book is."
"Blue." Green curled lines.
I propped the book up. "Perfect, who is this?"
"Ocho."
"What was his affiliations, and what was he doing in the harvest festival?"
"He was one of the leaders of the Cult of Two, we were working together for the same goal. He was there to collect information on the misfit class, except for my nephew." Lines were straight, but hints of yellow joined the green.
I smirked. "What is this goal you two share?"
He rubbed his thumbs togethers. "To raise the demon king, Derkila, by resurrection."
"What affiliations do you have with the six fingers."
"None." Full swirls, green with yellow tints.
"Ah, you lied. To think I thought we were getting somewhere." I closed the book. "Narnia can have you now." I stood.
"No, no. Sit, please." Orange squiggles.
"I told you not to lie to me, I do not like liars."
He talked fast. "They are a group I created to do things for me, like taking Eli from you." Straight lines.
I sat back down, cracking the book. "I want you to write all of their names down." I summoned paper and a pencil. He tapped his fingers on the table. The mask was wiggling.
"Please, don't make me."
"Do it!" He flinched, picking up the pencil. He scratched the names down and shoved the paper back. I looked down at the list, my mouth gapped.
Narnia looked over my shoulder. "What is it?"
"Hold on. Which one is Shiida?" I displayed several pictures from the carnival, he pointed to the same person."
"Is Poro working beside you or under you?"
"Beside me."
"Kerio?"
"Under."
I wrote that down as notes. I gave him a new piece of paper. "List all the people you gave my blood to or traces of it. Then everyone else who knows."
"That might take me a minute."
"That's fine." I waited for him to get down and looked over the list. "Is this accurate?"
"Yes, to my knowledge." Straight lines.
"I might be back, Narnia." I nodded to the door, standing. I unsummoned the tables and chairs, Baal falling to the ground.
I walked out of the room. "We must go to the Babyls School. Shiida is a part of the six fingers, I thought it a coincidence, but it is not. She was still there yesterday, but that all could have changed if she knew I was here now. She is not on the other list, but the other Six finger members are."
Henri took the papers from my hands. "Slow down, we can get to that. This might take some time; the list is long."
"Atori is also on the list, he was picked up by Poro according to Grandpa. They came as a pair."
"Vi, we must get the proper documents for investigation. This is not solid enough."
"Straight lines are truths, swirls are lies. That is solid enough for me."
"Narnia, write up the proper documentation and have Fenrir go with her to the school to make the arrest. This is the most we have had for a lead; you can do whatever with Baal." He looked at the lists as he walked out.
Narnia swirled his wrist, filling out paperwork hunched over a small table. I felt the anxiety rise on my body; Baal was watching from the window. He was grinning again; he tapped his chest. I shook my head, taking a deep breath. If he was feeling this, was Eli feeling the same?
He shifted to Fenrir. "Alright, take us there. Sullivans office that is." I touched his arm, teleporting us.
Grandpa looked up. "Back so soon? I knew you would choose this." He got up, more than happy, to give me a hug.
Fenrir held up the paper to him. "We are here to Arrest Shiida for affiliations with Six fingers. She and Atori were hired here on Narnia's recommendation, and he apologizes for not realizing Baal was using him to infiltrate the school his brother safeguards." He handed him the paperwork and then a small letter.
Grandpa looked it over. "I see, is my granddaughter not the most amazing. First day and she is already figuring things out." He came up to hug me.
"Hold on, I want to stay professional. After work when I come home. Promise. What classroom is Shiida in."
He pointed and walked out the door. We followed him down the hallway and to the second floor. Practical magic classroom D, He opened the door and all three of us walked in. Shiida turned, dropping the chalk in her hand.
She bowed. "Lord Sullivan."
Fenrir stepped forward. "Shiida, you are under arrest for affiliations with Six fingers."
She turned, aiming for the window. The class jumped up running to the back of the classroom. I summoned my violin, strumming hard and into a melody. I trapped her within a barrier, Fenrir cuffed her, and I released. She fought him, the collar shocking her.
She screamed, then spoke. "Please, I changed."
"That does not atone for the crimes you committed. Violetta, take us back."
"Where?"
"Lobby." I held a hand on both Fenrir and Shiida, teleporting to the lobby.
The Lady at the desk stood up. "Fenrir, I did not see you leave."
"Violetta teleported us. She helped make the arrest, do send someone to book this one." He handed her the paperwork. He shoved Shiida in a chair. "Stay." He waved the remote in her face. "Or you will find out the hard way what his does."
"What now?"
"We book them, then we can go forward with interrogation. Narnia has his ways."
"I would roll my eyes, but it is not worth the effort. If I am not needed, I wish to check on Eli."
"Your badge might not work, so I will follow."
In the elevator I turned to him. "How do you keep track of two jobs."
"It has been difficult at times. I am hoping you replace me, so I am not called out so much. It has been too close a few times here lately."
At the childcare door I tested the badge, it buzzed, staying red. I glared. Fenrir pressed his badge to the door, and it clicked, turning green.
"I will be sure to let them know to add a higher clearance to you badge."
I went inside, Eli was staring right at the door. His face lit up as he ran to me, hugging my legs. "Your back, is everything fine."
I crouched down. "Of course, I just wanted to check on you. Make sure you were fine."
"I have a new friend; his name is Jeremy, and he plays games too. Um, all the cookies you gave me are gone. I shared them with everyone."
"That was so nice of you." I rubbed his shoulders. "We can make more tomorrow."
"Um, can we make them without eggs. That girl over there couldn't have one because of her allergy."
"Definitely."
"Excuse me, Eli's mom, right?"
I looked up. "Yes?"
"Might I talk with you since you are here?" I nodded. "You too, Fenrir." She pulled us to the side. "I want to say Eli is a good kid, but his eyes are concerning."
I bit my lip. "It's…"
"He was tested on." Fenrir added in. "Is he displaying any bad behavior?"
"No, nothing like that. He pulled the cookies out to eat, and when a kid took one without asking, his eyes changed. I calmed the situation, and then he shared them with everyone he could."
"It is a family trait; Viola's eyes do the same thing. But do inform us, or Narnia if anything else happens."
"Right."
"Oh, Siren. Is it alright if he brings treats in? He felt bad that someone could not have one."
She nodded. "I can give you a list of allergies in the classroom." She waved her hand and a chart appeared. "Here is a list of allergies in the room."
"Thank you." I took the list from her, hugged Eli and reminded him to be good.
Outside the room, Fenrir showed me a picture he wanted me to teleport to. Alone, he switched back to Narnia. He walked over to his desk and pulled his chair out. He picked up a letter, his eyes narrowing as he sat down opening it.
"Are you really going to do that because he asked?"
"I joined border patrol because he wanted me to." He tilted his head back. "I mean, like. He overheard me talking about it and then encouraged me to do it. That he would be fine if I did."
"I see." He opened the letter. "You would really do anything for that little boy."
"Narnia, if that was not obvious months ago, then you are slow of mind." I grinned, and he gritted his teeth. "I did not mean to be that offensive."
"Not you, I thought that letter would be enough."
My eyes furrow, head tilting. "The one to Sullivan?"
He held it out. "Read for yourself."
Grandpa had responded to him, and in such a short matter of time. He was asking for answers as to why they were recommended in the first place, and why it took me to figure it out. He was going to make an investigation into him for his affiliations with Baal.
"Well, did you help or know anything? Anything regarding Eli?" I narrowed my eyes, looking.
"No, but I had seen Eli at his home… I smelled your scent, and I followed it to him. I investigated deeper and he said you were Lilith and you had killed one of his people. I came to Sullivans house, but the information I received was not reliable. I had the papers ready to arrest you that day." Straight lines.
"And you did not help me get him out sooner? You had the power to do that! Months! Months, Narnia!"
"Vi, please. Listen."
I took out my suppressants out. "Go on, explain."
"I was also using Baal to get into the thirteen crowns. You wanted to do this peacefully and it lined up perfectly for timing. Everything was fine, I had no idea what he was doing, but I thought he was safe. Vi…" I suppressed his breathing, the anger inside of me exploding. My phone rang.
"Yes, bug?"
"Eli is screaming that he wants to talk to you, I could not calm him." My eyes softened, releasing Narnia. He coughed, holding his chest, leaning over his desk.
"Put him on the phone."
"Mommy, are you okay?"
"Yes, bug, but you can't be doing that even if you feel me being upset. Okay?"
"I'm sorry."
"Apologize to the teacher. I will be by soon. I love you." I hung up. "You are lucky. Perfect timing on her part. It was fucked up timing on yours. They got my blood during my little trip to your house. They used him because they figured out how to make more even if it was weaker. I hope it was worth it." I teleported into the classroom, picked up Eli and his things, and went home.
