I did not know how to handle that bit of information. He used Baal as Baal had used him, but he was not completely faultless. My anger Exploded out of me; I did something I halfway regret. Baal helped him get into the thirteen crowns. I set Eli down.
That must be why he seemed so surprised I had come back, and Baal was being arrested by Henri. He had assumed everything was fine, but it was not. None of it was. If they could feel my emotions, then Eli knew every time I was mad. I hate this this world and situation.
Eli hugged my legs. "Mommy do not be mad, I am sorry. Please forgive me, I will be better. I promise."
"You had a rough day; I am more upset with someone else." I picked him back up. "Let's make some cookies. I have a list of allergies, so we can make treats based off that."
I took him to the kitchen; the list was short. No eggs, milk, or nuts. We made soda cupcakes, creating our own icing without milk. Twenty-four delicious cupcakes later, I smeared a little icing on his nose, and he tried to lick it off. I chuckled, and he flung a little bit at me.
I dodged. "Opera throws faster than that. You have a way to go to get me now."
"He did not miss entirely." I turned to Opera, ears down, tail swishing.
We chuckled. "Your it!" We screamed, and took off down the hall, Opera close behind. I swerved over Iruma, Eli slid between his legs. Opera jumped over and landed perfectly on the other side. Up and down the Halls. A door opened; I barrel rolled to the side. Eli smacked into it.
He bounced off, got up and kept running. He looked fine, and he was not crying. I shrugged turning a corner I hit something solid. Arms trapping me.
"Oh, precious granddaughter of mine. I have been waiting all day for this." He squeezed tightly, swinging me around. His face dropped. "Someone came by for you, I can send him away if you wish."
"Who?" He put me down.
"Naberius Narnia."
I looked around. "Where?"
"I made him stay outside where dogs belong. I knew this would happen, once you are in, you never get peace."
I chuckled. "He is a dog, is he not? I will see what he wants."
I cracked the front door, peeking out. "What."
He glared. "You did not let me finish. Can we talk somewhere private?"
"Why should we? I think you said enough."
He sighed, pinching his nose. "Vi, don't be difficult."
I clicked my tongue. "My room, this would make you the second man to keep me company in my room." I smirked, touching his arm, and then we were in my room.
He looked around. "Green."
"Good job captain observer. You came all the way here, finish."
"If I would have known he was in danger, I would have cared less about the position I was after. I wanted it, but there could've been more opportunities in the future. It was the easiest. I honestly did not know, and to find out the way I did." He combed his fingers through his hair as I watched the straight lines flow.
I crossed my arms. "Keep going."
"I almost… I know you are still upset, and all of this changed Eli. I beat myself up every day over it."
"Why?"
"My job is to bring in traitors, and terrorists. I did not see the one in front of me, the one using me in more ways than the one I thought. I am questioning all the things he has told me. One of them was that he claimed Iruma to be human."
"He's not. Have you seen the power he has; the appetite alone is of no human I have ever seen. He has some magic pocket in his stomach, I swear." Baal did know, and he told Narnia. All the inside organization must know.
"If you find out he is, you must report that to us. Humans are do not belong here."
"I know, mixing alone is a bad deal. Continue."
"Eli is in the right place, and while It did not go as planned, he is here and safe like I had promised." I pressed my lips and squinted. "Okay, I get it. I am sorry. I should not have used you and him at the same time, especially with a child involved. I messed up, can you find it in your heart to forgive me?"
"I can, in time. I need to cool off. I apologize for earlier. It is hard to restrain myself when it comes to Eli, he has been my whole world since he was born. I swore to protect him from everything and everyone who might hurt him. So, to have all this happen. I beat myself up too. You can leave now."
He looked around, eyes landing on my bed. "I am curious as to what other man you've had in here."
I smirked. "Someone you are close to, and in that exact spot your staring at, now go. I will see you tomorrow."
He raised my eyebrow, a half grin. "That sly dog, here I thought he would be single for the rest of his life with his attitude."
"Reality check. You are too."
"Hopefully, not for long." He held up a blue crystal and disappeared.
I blinked, a teleportation crystal. I left my room, finding Grandpa carrying Eli around. "Grandpa, what color are teleportation crystals? Can they be other colors?"
"Blue, and no. Do you need to go back to school?"
"No." I held mine out. "Thoth gave this to me for that purpose, but Narnia said it contained no magic."
He took it from my hands. "There is nothing inside, it is plain quarts." I closed my eyes, focusing on the spot behind grandpa. I opened my eyes and was where I had pictured. It was me the whole time. Why did he not say that?
I clicked my tongue. "Why must everything be a trick or a riddle."
I would go confront him, but a part of me thought he was lonely. If he gave me a gift to come back and see him, then I might come back over Iruma coming back. He was a giant, unable to really move anywhere being underground, and half in the dirt.
I could see why he would want someone to come by. Just him moving would cause grief to the small creatures who lived above. He was a humble giant with no bad intentions. I could let this slide, because in the end I learned a little more about myself.
I took the crystal back to my room, making a stand for it and propping it up. I engraved a name on a golden plate, Thoth. I smirked as I leaned it up on the stand. He was not allowed to tell me about my powers, so he gave me an indirect one.
He was finding loopholes in order to help me. That was a mentor, and he was a good one. Even if his intention was to get more knowledge from me about another world. I did not have a whole lot to share, giving most in my first encounter. Maybe he knew, and that is why he gave me a hidden message in the form of a gift.
The next morning, I dropped Eli off, Narnia trailing behind me to give me access to the room.
"Have a good day, remember what we talked about." I handed the cupcake carrier to the teacher. "It is safe for all the children, and almost sugar free. There is enough for everyone in the room."
"Thank you, I will set this a side for a treat at lunch."
Narnia and I walked down the hallway. "Sugar free? Are you trying to make the children not like Eli?"
I summoned one from home. "Would you like to try one and see if you can tell me the difference?"
His gazed fixated on the cupcake, and I waved it a little. He took a bit of it out of my hand, scooping the falling pieces into his mouth.
"You could have taken that from my hand."
He wiped is bottom lip with his thumb. "I think you lied, there is no way that is sugar free. You can finish that."
"Sugar free soda, and plant-based sweetener. No Eggs or milk was used in the making of these." I finished off the cupcake in one bite, the moist cake melting in my mouth.
"A heart that big and I wonder why you give such a cold shoulder."
"Children are different from adults." I flipped my hair over my shoulder, entering the Elevator.
The doors closed behind us. "You will be going out into the field today with Fenrir, Shiida gave us a willing lead to where the Six fingers like to frequent. She also stated that they may also be looking for a way to infiltrate Border patrol to get Baal out, but not her."
"Why not her?"
"She abandoned Atori and fought against him before Poro picked him up. She was labeled a traitor in their eyes. One down six to go. For your first day you did well."
"If Poro picked him up that fast, it is likely she is stalking the school."
"Her and others. There are a lot of eyes over the misfit class, especially over Iruma."
I rubbed my chin. "How long might this trip take to get there?"
"If you're worried about dinner, then remember you can teleport home at any time. I need you to learn fast, things are becoming tight here."
"When do we depart."
"Soon, Henri is to brief us both."
He shifted into Fenrir, his posture slouching. He had shifting forms down to a science. Changing clothes, appearance and even his posture to match his character. The door opened. People would greet him as he walked through, and he would nod or wave.
"Rather popular, Fenrir."
"I am more liked than Narnia, most fear him and tremble at just his name, but not you. This way." He pointed and we turned together.
I shrugged, looking at the name plates along the wall. "Henri." It was at the end of a long dead end hallway. I turned the handle entering the room. Henri was on the phone, Swiveled slighting to look out the window.
He looked over his shoulder. "I will call later." He hung up, leaned forward and faced his desk. "Early as always, here is the file of information. Shiida explained there are many broken buildings in the area, and they use several. Go in, look around. No fighting, and do not put yourself in danger.
If it seems to dangerous, come back. We do not know what to expect from them in there altered state. This is to survey only to see if the claims are true as well as learning exercise. Fenrir, I expect you to guide Viola though it."
"Of course."
Henri laid a picture down. "It is a few days flying trip, we picked a location close enough to hide you as well as make the trip shorter." I picked up the picture, a small village of farmland and a road. I skimmed through the file; I picked up the picture with multiple red dots over various bits of ruble.
"Can I take this?"
Fenrir took the file from me. "That is what it is there for." He skimmed over the contents, handing it back. "Simple enough, haven't had an easy day in a long time. Let's go Princess." He held up a blue crystal, locking our arms together.
The still air changed into a cold breeze. I should have been warned I would need a jacket. "Why is it so cold?" I grabbed my arms.
"We are farther north; change into the clothes I gave you. They will help you regulate body heat."
I quickly changed; the difference was instant. "Multifunction. Nice."
"Nighttime will be colder, but I don't plan to stay that late. Put this on so I don't lose you."
"What is it?"
He placed a green talisman around my neck and then his. "It will allow me to see you, but not seen by others."
"Hmm, about that, now that you've reminded me. You knew I was in your office, didn't you? The button thing training."
He smirked. "I did, but not until you pushed one of the buttons."
"I knew it. So, dose Kalego like me. What was your intention in saying that? The hair comment was a lie."
His smirk faded. "He does, he went against Sullivan's request to give you alcohol. Told you that you should be celebrating too. That was when I realized it, because that is not like him."
I went to speak, but the words would not come. He spoke straight forward, and calm, but it was still something I could not believe. He knew about that. Did Kalego tell him?
"I assumed before then. He told me a little about your situation, and after watching all your exam videos he sent. I passed down the violin to you. There was so much talent and power hidden in those bones, I knew it would get good use. I can see why he likes you, you musical talent and such."
"But, you. H…" Why was he being this honest now? Was he there, why not put his name on it?
"I was there, hiding in the shadows. I snuck away while on duty, and watched you play in person; it was all the more worth it to me. I wanted to see you open it, you're not a lavish gift person, are you? So reluctant, but you caved to Lord Sullivan." He huff laughed. "It was like you were not used to getting gifts."
"I was not, still not." I blinked, looking down. "The note?"
"Also, me. You needed something that could withstand how you played. The one I gave you was made to never break, it's almost a thousand years old."
I lifted my mask. "We came here to fulfill a task." He lifted his mask; he was see-through, but I could still see a minor outline of him.
"Shield us so we can fly in."
I raised a shield around us. "Done, I am not built for speed. My wings are gliding type, so I do best with a drop down. Direction?"
He pointed behind him. "North."
"See you in the sky." I teleported up, dropping down and swooping to gain momentum.
It had been him this whole time. No wonder I had difficulties trying to trace the handwriting. It was never anyone in the school. When Kalego would comment on it, asking about relationships, was it for him or Narnia?
Narnia came up on me fast, zipping by and slowing when in the lead. I took my earpieces out, listening to the world below. It was calming to hear the footsteps, and low sounds of the animals below. With that mystery solved, how do I proceed?
I really thought it might have been Kalego, with him asking so many questions. Now I see he was curious if I had taken a liking to his brother. The jealousy he displayed when Narnia and I were pretending. It was obvious he liked me, and I had been so oblivious.
Why did Narnia take an interest back then? I was barely anybody. I moved ranks fast, but that did not mean anything significant in my eyes. Was he drawn in because Kalego had said something? I held my head shaking it all away. I have a task, focus. We came up to a ruined city.
I could see the red dots in my mind, I pinpointed them and mapped them. Fenrir and I landed on the other side. He took the lead, looking around. There was not a lot to see. Broken pots, dead plants. Broken rusted weapons, and crumbling skeletons.
I covered my mouth. I read about this place. It was a grave, a reminder of what happens when you disobey the demon king. It was before Derkila's time. This was at least two maybe three thousand years old. The whole city was massacred.
A city of freedom. It was full of art and Music. Called the city of true expression, they considered themselves separate from the demon kings ruling. Their freedom of speech was what had them meet their end.
"Vi." I snapped my attention to Fenrir. He held up a wrapper. "Not much, but someone has been here. Let us go to location two."
Every red dot we visited had a wrapper, the devi-bar candy. In the second to last there was the most. Way to treat a grave. We left them behind and returned to Henri. He put his paperwork to the side, folding his hands.
Fenrir pushed me forward to speak. "We looked at all the areas she had marked. In each location we found wrappers of the same candy. One of them has a sweet tooth for Devi-bars. We ran into no one, easy in and out."
"Good, glad to hear it. This will be an area of interest for a while. Fenrir, how did she do?"
"She did fine, she will be able to do this no problem with her abilities."
Henri smiled. "Viola, In and out, just like today. That will be what you are to do every day until you spot one or we gain another lead. You see one, you come and get us."
I nodded. "Got it."
Fenrir walked off. My phone buzzed: Narnia. "Come to my office."
I teleported to Narnia's office; he was staring out his window. "Are you disappointed that it was I that gave you the violin and not someone else?"
I sat on the small couch in his office. "No. I spent so long comparing handwriting, trying to find this person. It was the best gift I have ever received. I have nothing but gratitude, thank you."
"I am sure Sullivan spoils you plenty." I summoned the worn card that had started to fray at the corners from all the times I had opened and closed it.
I smiled softly, eyes on the words. "It was not the violin that made me happy. Time, thought, and sincerity. One card with thirty-nine words. It might not have seemed like much to you at the time, but it had meant the world to me. Getting me through the roughest parts. There will never be anything to replace this."
He turned, eyes on the card. His lips pressed tightly. "Something so small still makes you that happy?"
"Nari, I grew up not given a thing." He turned completely, facing the window. "I stopped caring about anything materialist because there was always some catch, some pay back to give. I owed this or that. This was the first gift I ever received that was not any of those things. It was truly mine, without a catch. So, yes, it does."
"You should rest up; I am sure Eli misses you."
Was he not happy with the answer? I expressed my gratitude. I thought back over all the things we did together. He did not give any real indication he liked me, and I probably made him uncomfortable.
The niceness he was giving was the trip of guilt. Training, food. He felt obligated to help the situation. Going as far as to humor me when I was having the string of memories about being Violetta and around Deri. He was not all the rumors spoke about him, but he was cold to emotion.
