Amanda took a taxi to Sonny's apartment. He spent a lot of time at her apartment. So much so they had considering moving in together but had not taken that final step yet. When she got close to his apartment door, she could hear things being thrown against the wall. She was almost afraid to bother him, but she needed to know he was okay. She knocked on the door.
"Carisi, it's Amanda. Open up." Amanda raised her voice so Sonny could hear her.
Sonny opened the door and the sight of him standing there caught Amanda off guard. His hair was a mess, and his eyes were red and puffy.
"Sonny, you look like hell." Amanda said softly.
"You would too Rollins if your sister just died." Sonny scoffed.
Amanda stepped into the apartment and looked around. It was a complete mess. She found broken vases, lamps and picture frames that had been smashed against the wall.
"I am so sorry about Gina. I promised you I wouldn't leave her side and I didn't" Amanda spoke softly, trying not to upset Sonny even more. "But this…this isn't going to bring her back."
Sonny nodded as he took a seat on his couch. "She was my little sister. I was supposed to protect her. I even warned her about dating online.
He sighed and leaned back as he rubbed his hands over his face.
"And to think it was one of our own that killed her. Why Gina? There are so many people in this city, why did Velasco have to kill my sister?" Sonny questioned.
Amanda sat down next to Sonny and put her arms around him. She didn't know what to say to make this right. He leaned his head over on her should and sobbed.
Olivia and Fin sat in the gallery of the courtroom. It wasn't something that was new for them, though it was a shock to them both that they would be sitting there for Velasco's arraignment.
"In the case of the City of New York against Joe Velasco, Mister Velasco how do you plead?" The judge asked.
"Not guilty, your honor." Joe answered.
"Your honor if it pleases the court, Mister Velasco should be held without bond until the trial." The fill in A.D.A said. There was no way they were going to allow Sonny to be the ADA on this case.
"Your honor, Detective Velasco is a man of service. I request an ROR." Joe's attorney announced.
"I will allow it. Mister Velasco, I'm granting you ROR and we will reconvene in three weeks." The judge declared as she banged her gavel.
Fin leaned over to Olivia "That's at least a little bit better."
Olivia shrugged and nodded. A little better for now, but it still didn't take the sting away that Carisi's sister was dead.
The day of Gina Carisi's funeral, the church was packed. Even though she hadn't attended the church in years, her parents and brother were still devoted Catholics. It was the church she was baptized in. It only felt right to Dominick Senior and Serafina Carisi. Sonny, his father, Tommy, and a few of Gina's friends carried her casket out of the church. Serafina stood next to her daughters Bella and Teresa as the pallbearers put her youngest child in the back of the hearse. Olivia put her arm around Serafina, and she noticed something. Serafina was trying her best to stay strong for her family but inside she was breaking. It didn't go unnoticed by Amanda either. She was standing next to Bella. She looked over at Serafina who was trying not to break. She knew of the strained relationship the mother and daughter had. Now they would never be able to fix their issues and become close.
Once the funeral and burial were over, people milled in and out of the Carisi's home offering their condolences. Olivia walked over to Serafina and Dominick Senior and gave them both a hug.
"I am so sorry for your loss Mr. and Mrs. Carisi." Olivia said.
Serafina nodded. "I always thought if I was going to be burying a child it would have been Dominick with him working in law enforcement. With as wild as Gina was, I guess I should have expected this."
"Thank you, Captain Benson." Dominick Senior said as he patted Olivia's hand. "Will you please let us know what we can do to help in the investigation? We want to bring closure and justice for our baby girl."
"Of course. I have a friend that is an excellent prosecutor that used to work with us. I'm going to call him and see if he will take the case. Once he finds out who it is for, he will be more than happy to take the case." Olivia said, reminding herself to call Barba when she left.
Amanda walked over to Sonny with a cup of coffee. He was staring off into the distance. He hadn't said anything all day and it was starting to worry her.
"Here Sonny, I brought you some coffee." Amanda said as she handed Sonny the coffee.
Sonny took the coffee but never took a sip.
"How are you holding up?" Amanda asked, trying to get any response from Sonny. But he still didn't answer. He continued to stare off into space.
Sonny was still trying to make sense of everything. This all had to be a bad nightmare he would wake up from in the morning. There was no way his baby sister was dead.
A young man came into the house and went straight to Bella. If Amanda had to guess he was Puerto Rican, in his 30's and was very handsome.
"Bella, I am so sorry about Gina." The young man said.
Bella hugged his neck.
"Johnny, it's so good to see you. I am sure Ma and dad would like to see you as well." Bella said as she led the man over to Serafina and Dominick Senior.
"Mr. and Mrs. Carisi I am deeply sorry about Gina. When I heard the news…" Johnny Perez paused as he started crying "It broke my heart. How could anyone do this to sweet and innocent Gina."
Bella crossed her arms and snarked "We are hearing that it was a detective with the NYPD that killed her."
"Seriously?" Johnny gasped. "What kind of scumbags do they have protecting this city?"
Teresa joined her family when she saw the newcomer arrive.
"You might want to be careful saying that." Teresa whispered.
Johnny wrapped his arms around Teresa. "Teresa, it's lovely to see you. Wish it was under better circumstances."
"Likewise." Teresa broke the hug. "This place is crawling with cops. With Dom being a former detective and working with them even now as an A.D.A. I guess they felt they were obligated to come."
Johnny shivered at the thought.
"Never been a big fan of the police. Where is Dom anyway?" Johnny asked.
Bella pointed to the couch.
"He's in there in the living room with his girlfriend Amanda."
Johnny nodded and walked into the living room.
"Hey man, sorry to hear about your sister." Johnny said as he patted Sonny's shoulder.
Sonny nodded, but never said a word. He was never a big fan of Johnny's, likewise neither was Serafina.
"I'm sorry I don't think we have met. I'm Amanda Rollins." Amanda said as she shook Johnny's hand.
"Johnny Perez. Gina and I dated for a while." Johnny explained.
'Dated my ass.' Sonny thought. 'You were the reason she got addicted to drugs.'
Johnny and Gina dated in high school. Dominick Sr. and the other Carisi sister's adored Johnny. He seemed like the perfect prince charming and to this day, they didn't know the truth about him. Serafina had gotten a weird vibe. When she caught the two of them having sex in the basement, she banned Johnny from coming over. It didn't stop Gina from seeing him, she would just slip out after everyone went to sleep. Finally, Serafina put her foot down after finding Johnny with several other girls around town. When she told Gina, she was crushed. Serafina pushed Gina to breakup with Johnny which resulted in their relationship becoming strained. One evening Sonny had come home to find his sister passed out in her room with drugs beside her, she had tried to overdose but he was able to save her. It was then their parents tried to get her help for her addiction. Now here they were all back under one roof, except for Gina. Sonny had heard that Johnny had cleaned up his life and became a photographer.
"I will let you two catch up. Excuse me." Amanda said as she stood up.
Johnny took her seat as she walked over to Olivia.
"I'm really worried about Carisi. He won't talk to anyone including me. It is like he is in a trance." Amanda explained.
"Sometimes when you have been through the trauma of losing a sibling, especially the way he lost Gina it can take time to process. He's still in shock. Just give him some time and he will come around." Olivia said as she patted Amanda's shoulder.
Amanda nodded "I hope you're right."
