Intermission Chapter

Attention Reader: The following chapter is written in the perspective of someone behind a screen who is playing the Disney Smash Bros game.

That being said, living to see the day when Disney makes a Smash clone platform fighter would be my childhood dream come true. Sadly, we got a crappy mobile game with microtransactions in the form of Disney Mirrorverse.

Let me know in a comment if you agree with me!

And now, for the anonymous Player 1's perspective and experience:

When I was a kid and a teenager, Disney's animated movies brought me so much joy and memories, not to mention at the time, I was also a huge fan of Star Wars and Marvel Comics, which now belong to the Disney Company.

In addition, I really liked the whole concept of Kingdom Hearts. Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, fighting alongside anime swordsmen Sora and Cloud Strife? Shut up and take my money!!!

So when Super Disney Showdown was unveiled at San Diego Comic Con 2023, to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Disney Company, I immediately rushed to buy it, even though it was 75 bucks for the full game.

Long story short: It was every bit as good as Smash Ultimate, it lived up to the hype, and it was worth paying that exorbitant price.

I put the cartridge in my Nintendo Switch... and I was greeted with a wonderfully remixed version of the main theme from Super Smash Bros Brawl, with an epic choir and orchestral instruments. It also came with an equally epic intro shifting between all the characters and worlds under Disney's big roof, a lot like the intros to Smash Brawl, Smash 4, and Smash Ultimate.

This wasn't a surprise. After Sora got into Ultimate two years ago, Nintendo, Square Enix and Disney were seeking to cooperate more often, and that resulted in ambitious plans for more crossover games.

Then the main menu popped up. Let's see here... looks like Nintendo chose to let Disney use all of the same game modes as Smash Ultimate.

Clash And Bash: Classic game mode. Up to 4 players fight at once, choose your champion and start your showdown!

Giga Clash: Bigger battles for a bigger audience! Up to 10 players can join in, on a much bigger stage. Best played on a sufficiently large screen.

Specialty Showdown: A battle where up to 6 players can duke it out with permanent power-ups. Be careful not to go too crazy with the powerup settings, or things might glitch. Good for fast devices.

Custom Brawl: Switch between different movesets for your characters before the fight begins! A way of giving the battle a twist!

Tourney: A tournament-style game where up to 40 fighters can compete in up to 10 separate battles. As fighters lose, they are eliminated, and in the end, only one can be the winner.

Squad Strike: Two teams of 3 to 5 fighters take part in this duel, and you can swap between them. However, only two fighters, one representing each team, can be on the battlefield at once.

Okay, I guess I'm not in the mood for the standard game modes. It has too much in common with the original Smash. Let's go to the section titled More Ways To Play...

I'm assuming the Arena of Souls is like the Spirit Board. I also see an "All-Star Mode," "One-Man Army," and "Character Quests." Ooh, "Five Kingdoms?" Lemme see what that is...

Wait, this game has a STORY MODE?! Count me in!

And with that, my childhood nostalgia came flooding back in ways I could never imagine. I have a big thank you letter to write for Disney Studios, but that's gonna come once I beat this game.

Author's note:

Sorry to keep you waiting, sometimes I'm too busy to update my fanfics frequently. Five Kingdoms will return, and there's a very special reason why I want to continue writing... I'll give you a hint, why is 2023 going to be such an important year for Disney Company?
