Most say that, in space, no one could hear you scream. Whoever said such a thing was a liar. Ronald Knox could hear his partner, Grell Sutcliff, scream in a rage when they arrived at their destination.
The Statesman. Except they now know they have to move incredibly far to reap the souls of all the dead that should have been on the ship. That was before the Mad Titan used the Power Stone to set the remains of the ship on fire, causing an explosion.
"There is no way that William didn't know this would happen." Ronald had hoped that when he got more used to Grells excentricities that he wouldn't have to deal with anyone elses. That turned out to be wrong if his superior did know of this fact.
He turns his head to look at Grell when she growls, sharp teeth biting into her bottom lip. "I hoped he wouldn't give us the wrong information, or withhold it when you were here with me. You didn't do anything, after all."
"What do you mean by that, Grell?" Ronald narrows his eyes at her. What did she do this time?
Grell blushes and looks anywhere but at her partner. That's when she saw it. Her favorite being in the whole of wreckage. Loki, the God that always kept her on her toes. There was no way she was going to leave him like this. Dead was not an option for Loki, proven by the amount of times he survived things that most would never have been able to.
She rushes over to him, which was hard since they were in space. Ronald had yet to see the body since he was already getting to work on reaping the souls of the dead. Once he did, he went over to her, placing a hand on her shoulder. Grell was cradling a body in her arms. Upon closer inspection, Ronald sees who the body belonged to. He stepped back in shock.
Ronald never thought he'd see the day when Loki would end up dead. The God had survived so much that Ronald couldn't picture him succumbing to death. It was quite a shock for him, but it was devastating to Grell. She looked about ready to take up the mantle of "Jack the Ripper" once again against Thanos for what he has done.
To be honest, Ronald could understand. He, too, had a favorite being. And if he finds out later that his favorite has been killed as well, he doesn't know what he'd do. Though, from the look on Grells face, she was going to do something that no one had dared to do before. She was going to let the Gods soul return from limbo back into his body. And Ronald needs to check that she knows what she was thinking of doing.
"Grell," she turns to look at him, her anger proving venomous. If he didn't know that she wasn't angry at him, he might have had a more intense reaction than he did. "I know what you're thinking. Are you certain, and are you ready to face any consequences that might come with this action?"
That's all Ronald needed to tell her for her to understand what could happen. She didn't want to lose her scythe again. Not like last time. However, even with that knowledge, she nodded. Knowing what would happen, and yet still willing to take the punishment. "I believe he could be benificial in the upcoming future."
Nothing else was needed. Ronald helped keep Loki's body close to them as they went from body to body collecting the souls the dead Asgardians and gladiators.
That's when they felt it.
The power radiating throughout the universe was that of all six Infinity Stones.
The two turned to each other, fear written all over their faces. They knew that their books of souls was vibrating constantly in their pockets for a while not, showing that they were going to need to reap more souls than what they originally thought when they took this assignment. But this was something completely different.
These names being entered into the book didn't have their souls with them. They were listed in the same way they do when a demon takes a soul.
This wasn't going to go over well with the higher up.
With that thought in mind, the two partners finish reaping the souls of the Statesman, before heading to their next destination. Earth. More specifically, Wakanda.
They were not looking forward to having to explain the who, what, when, where, why, and how of their existence and occupation. But that's what they signed up for when taking this job. They knew they would have to go to Wakanda when they agreed. But now that Thanos had completed his mission? Now they were going to face worse when they appear in front of some many people who could put up an incredible fight in an attempt to stop them from doing what they were tasked to do.
Yes, this was not going to go over well for them.
"Well," Ronald sighs. "We might as well get this over with."
Grell nods, looking at the body tied around her waist. "I'm not going to enjoy explaining this." She mutters.
Ronald cannot blame her, he agrees. Why couldn't they get a job that wasn't going to cause them to fight with the living? He thought that was over on his first huge mission with Grell on back on the Campania. But it seemed that dealing what was now referred to as zombies was not enough for them. They needed to deal with a Titan who couldn't take that the amount of beings in the universe wasn't the issue, but rather the lack of resources and the people who hoard anything they can whether they need it or not, and the ones who simply refused to distribute the resources fairly. That was what caused so many names to be added to the book. Except the ones Thanos has added himself.
No one from the Reaper Society was happy that they couldn't do much to stop him. The higher ups are very strict in their rules and regulations. And yet, Grell was going to break one. Even if she believed it would be beneficial, she knows the consequences will still come for her.
She turned to face Ronald once again, nodding to let him know she is ready to move on to their next step.
To Wakanda they go, into the belly of the beast. Or panther.
If they looked at the book before heading out, they might have known that the panther wasn't going to be a problem at this point.
