"By the gods!" Memphis exclaimed as he and Paul discovered the remains of the Weeping Angels as they discovered a hidden area underneath Gallifrey.
When he was younger, Memphis heard stories of "monsters" and whatever else lurking underground, here he was seeing it in person, and the worst is that his father knew.
Paul told him with explicit instructions not to speak of it anywhere, since it was censured by the Council.
"Our own kind, turned into mindless fiends, and they can't even get a peaceful death!" Memphis exhaled at the sight as he moved with Paul while trying to understand how this happened.
Gesturing, Paul haphazardly says, "It's like something… took their life force…"
With their MO of consuming energy to sustain themselves, it would seem something else had the same MO, to what extent Paul didn't know, and he saw Memphis look off to the side with his eyes looking into the distance.
"What's wrong?" Paul grew concerned as Memphis blinked and turned his head.
Worry in his voice, Memphis informs him that there's power instability all throughout Gallifrey, and the engineers can't figure out where it's coming from.
"It's getting worse by the minute, if they can't stop it, there's a chance that it causes the domes to cease function!" Memphis panicked at the thought that Gallifrey would not only lose power but become exposed to enough radiation to the point they would be reduced to nothing.
Compounding to the issue that Paul couldn't reach out to Taylor or find her, he chewed on his inner lip before asking Memphis, "Can you get thebloodything off me?"
It was serious enough that he asked Memphis to get the headband, preventing him from reaching out to the other Doctor.
"I can't do that, they'll reprimand me," Memphis grew cautious about the idea, before Paul urged him that the Council held issues with him, not Memphis, and if they say anything, just blame him.
Looking to the ground, time against him, Memphis nodded as he unsheathed his sword, telling Paul to kneel before him.
He did as order and Memphis used his sword's hilt to bash the side of the metal headband, separating it from Paul's head, and allowing him to use his telepathy.
Quickly, he reached out to the other Doctor to warn him about what's happening to Gallifrey before asking if he succeeded in finding Taylor.
"Taylor! Have you found her?" Paul asks him with his telepathy.
Still shocked that he could hear Paul from where he stood, the Doctor answers, "I did! She's fine. We're a little woozy now, but that's aside the point. Someone else is here on Gallifrey and I don't know who they are… but I think it's a man."
With no time to ask what the man looked like, Paul urged him to take Taylor to his TARDIS and meet him at his.
"Right, we'll see you on the topside!" The Doctor assures him.
Reaching out to Memphis, Paul asserts that he can help stop the energy drain, and asked Memphis to help him reclaim his TARDIS and his things so he can do just that.
"Right, come on, there's a shortcut," Memphis urged Paul to follow him.
Nodding, Paul rushed with Memphis back to the main corridor, where they saw the Vanguard assembling as they looked up at the sunroof to see the domes flickering from the simulated skies to the hellish red that was the planet.
"Memphis, what on Gallifrey are you doing with the prisoner?" One of the Vanguards stopped Memphis from proceeding to show Paul where his TARDIS and things would be held.
Memphis stared into his magenta eyes as he asserts, "The prisoner is going to save the city, are you going to stand idle, Cyrus, or are you going to help us?"
Seeing the seriousness in his pink eyes, Cyrus recoils before shouting orders for the Vanguards to make way for Paul and Memphis.
"Release the machine and his effects!" Cyrus shouted to his men.
Running with Memphis, the two were allowed into an intricate evidence locker where there's evidence from centuries and older still where they were left, all those times, ago.
Wrapped in electrified chains, Paul saw the TARDIS as he ran up to a table with his things while Memphis undid the chains at the console.
Once the chains fell off, Paul ran up to the door as it gave the moment, he turned the handle.
He turned his head when he heard the familiar sound of the Doctor's TARDIS appear and hurried towards it as its door opened.
Running out first, the Doctor wearing his usual multi-coloured outfit greets Paul as Taylor ran out to rejoin him.
His arms instantly wrapped around her; Paul pulled her close as he hugged her tightly.
"My TARDIS is saying there's dangerous energy spikes coming from somewhere in… it called the Underkeep, our best bet's getting down there and putting a stop to it," the Doctor urgently tells Paul.
His chestnut hair bobbing as he agreed, Paul urged the Doctor to re-enter his TARDIS and meet him down there.
Nodding, the Doctor's blond tightly curled hair stiffly moved as he ran back into his TARDIS while Taylor ran into Paul's TARDIS.
Memphis stopped him from entering it as he wanted to come with them down into the Underkeep, offering to lend his knowledge, and Paul thanked him as he allowed Memphis to enter with him.
Inside the TARDIS, Paul quickly pulled levers and pushed buttons as the TARDIS came to life, taking them down to the hidden Underkeep.
Checking the monitors, Paul says that there's no sign of radiation leaking, thus they can safely step out of the TARDIS.
Exited, they rejoined the Doctor as he said his TARDIS was working with Paul's to keep the integrity from destabilizing further, but they're worried that there's a chance whatever's doing this might start draining them.
"We won't take long, come on!" Paul urged the group to hurry with him as they ran through the cobbled area with little light sources.
Seeing the ancient architecture of the fabled Underkeep with his own two eyes, Memphis marveled at the sight as he saw the stonework of the Underkeep that was dated thousands of years, during the early years of Gallifrey's founding while he ran with the others through it towards the centre where the machines claimed the source of the energy drain was coming from.
They stopped when the ceiling started caving in and separated the group, Memphis pushed Paul away from the stones as the Doctor pulled Taylor to safety.
"Everyone okay?!" Paul shouted and he heard the Doctor's muffled voice that he and Taylor were before asking about him and Memphis.
Standing up, Memphis declared, "I'm fine."
He hurried with Paul to find a way to regroup with the Doctor and Taylor.
Struggling the men found their footing as Memphis guided Paul towards a corner, as they neared, they're stopped by the appearance of a woman.
"Halt! State your name!" Memphis demanded to know as the woman tilted her head at him and Paul before showing an angry scowl as she advanced towards them.
Unsheathing his sword, Memphis barely stopped her attack as the sound of metal scraping against metal echoed throughout the Underkeep as he felt her pushing against his sword.
"Run!" Memphis shouted at Paul.
Against himself, Paul was forced to do just that as he left Memphis to fight the woman who matched him in strength as she stared coldly into his eyes.
Fleeing through the Underkeep, Paul struggled as it proves difficult navigating without Memphis' help.
He reached out to Taylor and the Doctor with his telepathy to warn them and they tell him collectively that they're in a chamber, but don't know where to go from there.
"Stay there, I'll find you!" Paul urged them to stay put until he could find his way to the chamber.
Unable to create a tear for him to enter and bridge the gap, Paul was forced to rely on his years of traveling and his time camping to locate them.
Don't know where he ended up, but he could feel the air becoming unbearably cold that he felt his skin developing bumps as he saw his breath.
"There you are!" Memphis spoke up behind him, causing him to turn around sharply.
Exhaling sharply, Paul musters, "Who was that woman, what did she want?"
Gesturing, Memphis told him that he didn't exchange many words with the woman, only that she was hostile, and he dealt with her.
"Have you seen her before?" Paul asked him.
Shaking his head, Memphis answers, "No, I can't fathom her being born here."
Nodding, Paul gestured as he ushered Memphis to hurry, and he ran with Paul towards where he thought would take them to the chamber that the Doctor and Taylor were in but found a dead end in their efforts.
"Shite, come on, then, the other way!" Paul swiftly turned around and as he did, he noticed something unusual about Memphis.
He didn't know him very well, but he knew how much pride he had with his sword, and he asked about it out of curiosity's sake.
"Must've lost it during the fight," Memphis mustered before gesturing that they needed to hurry and catch up to the others.
It sounded too logical of an answer, but Paul subtly tried reading Memphis's mind, finding it was impossible to read, and he hesitant going near Memphis.
"Doctor!" Memphis gestured at him with annoyance before Paul eyed him.
Shaking his head, Paul responded with a dry, "You have to do better than that."
Scoffing at him, Memphis crossed his arms as he asks, "What gave it away?"
Pointing at him, Paul said, "He knew my name. I suppose this means you don't."
Tilting his head, Memphis remarks, "Does it really matter?"
Eying him, Paul goes, "It does. Who are you?"
He watched Memphis lock up as if incapable of answering his question, instead boasting, "I doubt you can fight as well as him!"
His face changed and became emotionless, his eyes staring straight as he lifted his hand up as he changed his stance while Paul watched.
Paul's angel eyes watched as the hand reformed into a sharp blade as "Memphis" began advancing towards Paul with intent on cutting him down.
Thinking on his feet, Paul used his Sonic Screwdriver to cause an electrical shock that was enough to temporary stun "Memphis" and gave him enough time to flee while the fake Memphis recovered from the stun.
Paul telepathically warned Taylor and the Doctor about the threat, and he heard that they found the real Memphis, injured, but barely alive.
While trying to find the chamber, things got even more interesting as Paul stopped when he saw someone standing at the end of the corridor.
The sight made him want to turn tail and run, but he knew that he didn't have any other way into the chamber.
Barely near him, Paul felt his feet dragging as they were unwilling to go near the figure.
Othello was telling the truth, the Master…
"Do… not… call me… that… Mister… Smith!" the strange man with illuminating blue eyes seemingly read Paul's mind as he chided him for making the comparison, taking it as an offense.
Caught between a rock and a hard place, Paul demanded to know what was going on and the strange man explained that he was there to help Paul.
He was the reason Taylor was safe for the most part during this mess.
"Most part, mate, you haven't been keeping up, have you?" Paul pointed out that the strange man's assessment in the matter was lacking polish.
Shaking his head, the strange man asserted, "You… will… do well… to listen… to me… Mister… Smith…"
Stiffly turning his body, the strange man showed Paul the white light behind him as he insisted that Paul use it to reach Taylor and the Doctor.
"Why should I trust you?" Paul questioned him.
Eying him, the strange man informed him, "You… owe me… Mister… Smith…"
The matter of their debt hasn't been resolved, Paul owes him a great deal, still.
And.
He has no choice.
Seeing the distrustful look in Paul's angel eyes, the strange man with illuminating eyes reminds Paul that he was no good to him dead.
Without any choice and with the fake Memphis closing in, Paul cursed himself as he followed the strange man's request by going through the tear that appeared.
