Author's Note: This is from Duncan's POV so apologize for all the swearing ahead of time. Also, I'm still re-learning how to format these chapters to make them more readable. Apologies again for that.
Chapter Two: Can Pigs Fly? No, But They Can Get Out of Prison
Prison sucked.
His cellmates sucked. His prison guards sucked. The food sucked. Everything was just a flaming pile of shit.
And the worst part? He deserved this for being such an asshole.
All it took was a few weeks in solitary confinement for Duncan to realize that he needed to get his shit together. He stopped picking fights and instead focused all of his energy on his rehabilitation. Therapy, as sissy as it sounded to him at first, was very helpful. It helped him realize why he did the things that he did. The fame had changed him and warped his view of himself. He felt like he had to be this bad boy or else no one would take him seriously anymore.
And Courtney?
She was making him soft and he couldn't have anyone thinking he was soft. So he hurt her to prove that he wasn't a simp, like some of the fans were saying after the first two seasons of Total Drama. Did he feel any remorse when he cheated on his on-and-off again girlfriend of two years? Of course he did, he wasn't a complete monster. But was he also tired of her bullshit and the fact that she was always trying to control him? Definitely.
Meanwhile, Gwen was easy on the eyes and ego. She liked the things that he liked and didn't ask him to change anything about himself. But beyond that, there wasn't really anything substantial to their relationship. Once the honeymoon period was over, he found himself bored and was soon obsessing over Courtney's new romance with Scott, which ended up screwing up his own relationship with Gwen.
Fortunately, prison gave him a lot of time to reflect on things. Like why was it that only his mom, DJ, and Geoff were the only ones to ever visit him, and why did he see Courtney's cute freckled face whenever he went to bed?
After about five years in prison, he was finally released on parole for good behavior. Again, only his mom, DJ, and Geoff (plus Bridgette) were there to pick him up. It didn't matter to him now though. He was going to prove to everyone that he had changed and that he was ready to make something of himself.
While it was difficult to find a job as an ex-felon, DJ was happy to have him work at his restaurant. Duncan proved to be a good worker, but knew that he didn't want to be a waiter forever. Eventually, he was able to find a mentor and became a tattoo artist apprentice.
Now, Duncan has been working as a licensed tattoo artist and body piercer. And more excitingly for him, his parole was almost up. Which was perfect timing since he was going to be a groomsman for Geoff's wedding.
Duncan wasn't scared of anything, except maybe Celine Dion music store standees and he has already conquered that fear on the show. He's been to prison with some of the toughest thugs around and has even gotten into fights with some of them. But why was it so hard for him to reach out to the girl that he had been thinking about for over a decade?
"It's been years since you've gotten out of prison, dude," said Geoff while lying upside down on the couch. "You're both gonna be at my wedding. When are you going to just go talk to her?"
"I will… Eventually," said Duncan. "But what if she doesn't want to talk to me? She's a big-shot lawyer now. She probably already has some hot British doctor boyfriend or something."
"Nah brah, Bridgette told me that Courtney hasn't been on any dates since she and Scott broke up. And Bridgette has been trying to set her up on a lot of dates," Geoff explained.
"I cheated on her on international television, bro."
"Bridgette cheated on me too! I mean it sucked, but I forgave her after her sweet song. Oh! You should serenade Courtney!"
"Yeah? And pigs can fly."
"Just trying to help, dude."
Fuck, Duncan couldn't wait for his parole to be over. Glancing over at his best friend, he could tell the edibles were kicking in. Being sober wasn't hard most of the time, but he really needed to stop thinking about Courtney.
"Oh shit. I forgot that I was supposed to go to the venue today to help Bridgette out," slurred Geoff, who was reaching the peak of his high. "I'm too fucking stoned to go. Can you go for me, bro?"
"You dumb fuck," Duncan sighed while shaking his head. But he was a groomsman and he knew that DJ was working at the restaurant right now so he was the only option. "You owe me big time, Geoff."
"Sure, sure," Geoff replied with a lackadaisical wave. "Tell Bridgette sorry for me."
"I'm gonna make sure she puts you in the doghouse personally."
The venue was a rough, 2 hours drive away from his place, and Duncan was beginning to hate Geoff when he finally got there.
Once there though, he had to admit it was a pretty nice spot. It was peaceful now, but would definitely make an awesome beach wedding in June. He walked along the empty beach where he saw a familiar figure standing in the water.
She looked so different. Last time he had seen her, she was just a teenager. Now she was a woman and had fully grown into her curves. Her brown hair was now way past her shoulders. And the expression on her face was one that he had never seen. She looked peaceful, maybe even serene.
He hesitated. He didn't expect to see her so soon and he didn't know what to say. Should he even say anything to her? She looked so good and that was probably because he hadn't been in her life all this time.
Before he could do anything, he was approached by some snot-nosed employee. "Excuse me sir, but this is a private property. I'm going to have to ask you to leave."
"Fuck. Uh.." he stammered, but instantly regretted it as Courtney turned around. Their eyes met and he felt his heart racing. This was not the reunion he was hoping for.
"Listen, I'm one of the groomsmen. I'm just checking on things," he said while keeping his eyes on Courtney. Did she know that he was a groomsman? Would she think he was lying?
When Courtney stood up for him, Duncan felt a wave of relief. Maybe she didn't hate him after all.
But the coldness in her voice when she spoke to him, made him feel that she probably did. He kept searching her face for some sort of sign, to see if there were still any feelings left for him. Before he knew it, she was walking away from him.
"Wait! Can we talk?" he begged. This was supposed to be his moment. He was going to tell her everything that he was thinking about over the years. He was going to apologize for his actions and let her know that she was always the only girl for him.
"No." And she was gone.
