Eda liked having Luz, King, and Varian at the Owl House but that also meant more chores for Eda to do. She started making a to-do list for the day such as getting Luz a new coat, checking King for fleas, and getting Varian new potion vials. Luz and King were training for the Gland Prix to win a chance to appear on TV. This was King's way of getting a message to his dad. Eda thought that King was going to be leaving her just like Luz and Varian. It wasn't until she bumped into the new Head Bard and ex-lover, Raine Whispers, and their students.
They have been rescuing wild witches from being placed in covens as the Bards Against the Throne, AKA the BATS. Eda decided to help them out as a distraction from King saying that he wanted to leave. She and Raine reconnected and slowly her feelings for them returned. However, during the Gland Prix, Eda had gotten a call from Raine about a raid happening. Turns out, it was a trap set by head witches Eberwolf and Darius. Raine discovers that Eda's curse warps magic, so they use it to take out Eberwolf and Darius.
But it backfires when Raine sees the picture of herself with Varian, Luz, and King. They didn't want Eda to just leave them. Darius captured Raine while Eda got away, Raine told her that they could handle Darius and Eberwolf. When Eda returned to the Gland Prix, Luz and King placed in fourth place. Eda used her scroll to livestream King's message, and he finally revealed a surprise for her. He was legally changing his name to King Clawthorne and if Eda signed the paperwork, it would be official. Eda was crying happy tears at the news.
A few days later, Hooty was feeling a little unimportant because Luz and the others went off on adventures. He sent a letter to Lilith explaining his problem but luckily, Lilith wrote him back with an answer. She reminded Hooty that he is the Owl House, he takes care of everyone inside him. Soon he decided to check up on the others, he found Luz, Eda, and King in the living room but no Varian. King's voice was starting to crack when he spoke then he just stormed off. Hooty went over to Eda, and she looked like a hot mess.
She had giant bags under her eyes, her hair was messy, and she was using clothespins to hold her eyelids open. "I'm freakin' out, Hooty. Belos is planning something big, and I'm weaker than a newborn witchling. If I want to protect you guys, I have to train as hard as I can to get strong. No rest!" Eda stated.
"But every time you overwork yourself, you turn into the Owl Beast." Hooty reminded Eda.
She didn't listen to Hooty and left the room with her scrolls and blowing a bullhorn to keep her away. Luz was trying to make the echo mouse happy and trying to get the portal info. She kept the little guy away from Hooty after he swallowed it. Luz also had her heart torn between getting home and making her way into Amity's heart. She let it slip then her face turned bright red before running out of the room. Varian suddenly came out of hiding but he wasn't himself. His eyes looked all red and puffy like he had been crying. Even Ruddiger was worried about him.
"Why so glum, chum?" Hooty asked.
Varian just rolled his eyes and walked away without saying a word. Hooty then came up with a plan to help everyone. He started with King who was trying to figure out what was happening to him. Since Hooty was the only other demon in the Owl House, he knew he could help King out even if King didn't want to accept his help. Hooty owl pellets King and brings him to another part of the house. Hooty explained to King that he was going through Demon Puberty, which in the Demon Realm is a holy test to determine what kind of demon you are.
Hooty went over the demon history and the three categories that demons are put in, Bug, Biped, and Beast. Hooty decided to test if King was a Bug demon just in case. All bug types communicate through dance, King tried a dance, but it ended up sounding offensive to Hooty. Next, they tried to test if King was a Biped demon since they walk on two legs and even have bile sacks like witches. He tried dueling a friend of Hooty's but it backfired, he couldn't cast a single spell.
And then came the test for Beast types, a blood sample. The second King saw the needle in the biped demon's hands, he freaked out and ran out of the room. He ran and ran until he found Varian's room and hid inside Varian's satchel. Varian noticed King trying to hide. "What's going on King?" Varian asked.
"So Hooty was trying to help me figure out what kind of demon I am. And we tried bug and biped demons but that failed. And now Hooty wants to stick me with a needle!" King shouted, then he saw Varian staring at a small photo in his hands. "You ok?"
Varian wiped away his tear marks before facing King. "I'm fine. I just want this day to be over with. It's my dad's birthday. I miss him. We have this little tradition where we would go apple picking and then we would make cider and pie. We just spent the day together. But this year, I'm not with him." Varian confessed.
King stepped out of the satchel and hugged Varian tight. He smiled at King's little gesture which made him feel a little better. Hooty suddenly appeared in the room and managed to get a blood sample from King. The test was inconclusive, so they don't know what kind of demon King really is. King was disappointed; he just wanted to know where he came from, what his dad looked like, and what he'd look like when he was older. No one had responded to his video or his wanted posters.
"Maybe my dad is gone. Maybe there's no one else like me. And I'll live my whole life without any answers." King stated in anger.
"No! I didn't mean to make you mad!" Hooty shouted.
"Well, I am mad. At him, for not being here!" King screamed as tears fell from his cheeks.
He suddenly let out a sonic shriek that destroyed almost everything. Varian looked shocked at King's new power, but Hooty freaked out and left. King decided to stay with Varian at least until Hooty calmed down. Varian pulled out the scroll piece he had found on Hunter, he wanted to crack the code on the scroll. Without warning, both of them heard a loud thud coming from the hallway. They ran to see where the noise was coming from and found Eda collapsed on the floor with a half-eaten cookie in her hand.
Varian picked up the cookie and found traces of sleeping nettles inside it. "Hooty, what did you do?" Varian asked.
Hooty just wanted to help Eda get stronger by putting her to sleep. "Hooty, sleeping nettles don't just put you to sleep, they heighten your dreams! You just stuck Eda with the Owl Beast!" Varian explained.
Hooty stated that he knew what he was doing. While Eda was sleeping, he told Varian that he had a surprise for him in the kitchen. Confused, Varian and King followed Hooty into the kitchen but there was nothing there. Suddenly, Hooty Owl pellets both of them and then spits them out onto the tower part of the house. Varian was completely grossed out from being cocooned by Hooty. Hooty had apparently overheard King and Varian's conversation about his dad's birthday, so he made a small apple pie and some apple blood to try and cheer Varian up.
Hooty also had one more surprise for Varian; he gestured to the owl pellet which started moving. The person that broke through the pellet was Hunter, himself along with his palismen. Varian's face turned bright red with embarrassment. "Hunter?"
"Varian? What's going on? Is this the Owl House? Also, what is that thing?" Hunter asked.
King just looked at them completely confused about who this guy was. Varian demanded to know why Hooty kidnapped Hunter in the first place. Hooty read in Varian's secret journal that he was trying to figure out what the scroll piece was. He also read about Varian's little adventure in Latissa so he thought that Hunter could help Varian. Varian begged King not to tell Eda about Hunter being here, King promised not to say anything. "Hunter, I am so sorry about all this. I just needed to take my mind off today and it's just..."
"Varian." Hunter interrupted, "It's ok. I honestly wanted to see you again. Maybe not like this. But I'm kind of glad your owl friend brought me here."
Varian smiled at Hunter then the blue hair stripe in his hair began to glow all of a sudden. Hooty freaked out again, thinking he had made things worse and left. Hunter told Varian that he had to go but he promised to write. When Hooty went to check on Eda, he saw her completely differently. Instead of a full owl beast, she looked like a harpy. Hooty left in panic thinking that he had worsened Eda's curse. He tried to help Luz ask Amity out since her heart was torn between finding a way home and love. Hooty left Luz a riddle for Luz to head to the basement.
Luz went into the basement to find Amity who was brought there by Hooty. A trap door opened below them, and they fell onto heart-shaped pillows that freaked Luz out. Hooty had created a tunnel of love boat ride for both Luz and Amity. Luz panicked thinking that Amity was going to think that she was being so cheesy. During the ride though, Amity's face turned red thinking this was Luz's way of confessing her feelings for her. Luz got so paranoid that she was going to be made fun of that she used her glyphs to destroy the animatronics and the tunnel of love.
When the ride was over, Amity thought Luz didn't like her; disappointed she tried to leave. "Amity, wait." Luz called out, "This wasn't me. This was all Hooty's stupid idea."
"Yeah. This was stupid. I mean, us, dating? Heh. That's stupid, right?" Amity stated.
Hooty freaked out again thinking he had caused too much trouble. He tried to get rid of himself from the house and even got himself out of the door. Varian and King felt the tower shake so much from Hooty's outburst. The shaking got worse as Hooty pulled himself from the door frame. Eda came out in her harpy form just as Luz and Amity came out of the basement, feeling worried about Hooty. The boys saw Eda's harpy form and they looked impressed. A rock started falling off the tower and was heading straight for Luz and Amity.
King let out a sonic screech that destroyed the fallen rock before it hit Luz and Amity. "Whoa. King, did you do that?" Varian questioned.
"I think I did. I think I've got a power." King stated.
Varian and King used Sapphire to fly down towards the others. Luz told Eda that she had a few questions for her later. They spotted Hooty who was sobbing and freaking out about how he had failed everyone. Eda stated to Hooty that he actually weirdly helped her, she and the Owl Beast made a truce which unlocked her Harpy Mode. King stated that he had discovered a new power he could use. Even Varian stated that Hooty's little surprise cheered him up and made him less homesick.
"But I still failed Luz!" Hooty cried.
Eda turned to Luz and then asked her what Hooty was trying to do for her. She whispered to them that Hooty was trying to help her ask Amity out. She wanted to but she didn't want to do it with Hooty throwing a tantrum like a toddler. Eda had an idea that might work, it won't be perfect, but nothing is perfect. Eda grabbed Hooty then the ground collapsed beneath Amity and Luz, but it was in the shape of a heart. Luz finally worked up the courage to ask Amity out; even though Amity asked her out first, but they were now dating.
Thanks to Hooty's weird way of helping, King discovered a bit more about himself, Eda started accepting the Owl beast as a part of her, and Luz and Amity became girlfriends; Amity even showed Luz some tricks to get info from the Echo Mouse. Varian stayed in his room eating the slice of pie Hooty made him. He was grateful for Hooty helping him feel better and now he can send letters to Hunter to talk to him. He started to slowly develop feelings for Hunter.
