Luz let Hunter stay in her room while she took the couch. Varian caught the common mold from Luz after the trip for Titan's Blood at Eclipse Lake. Amity, Willow, and Gus left after the issue with Luz; they did not want to go through the mold again. Hunter and Flapjack woke up hearing Varian's moans of sickness at around four in the morning. Hunter got out of the blankets and headed toward Varian's room. He opened the door to find Varian with a wet cloth on his forehead, a stuffy nose, and huge dark eyes.
Hunter asked Varian what was wrong, and Varian just rolled around on the blankets shivering. Hunter assumed that he was just freezing so he grabbed the blankets and draped them over Varian, he stopped shivering. Ruddiger pulled on Hunter's pants to tell him to stay and keep an eye on Varian. Hunter wanted to stay but he didn't want to risk catching the mold from Varian. It wasn't until Ruddiger pulled out the puppy dog eyes raccoon style on Hunter, that he decided to stay. Hunter noticed that Varian was still wearing his goggles, he took them off and placed them to the side.
The next morning, Hunter woke up and made everyone breakfast before anyone else woke up. The boy even made some soup for Varian; he left the kitchen with the bowl of soup and brought it up to Varian's room. Varian started acting like he was still in the cell in Corona, he covered himself with the blanket and turned his back to the door. Hunter walked in with the soup "Hey Varian, I brought you some breakfast." Hunter said to Varian.
But Varian didn't move from his spot; Hunter looked a little concerned at Varian's change of mood. Hunter pulled back the blanket only to meet an angry Varian. "Get away from me!" he shouted.
"Varian, it's me, Hunter. I'm not here to hurt you."
"Don't lie to me Rapunzel! You promised to free my father! But instead, you and Corona turned your backs on me and threw me in a cell!" Varian screamed.
Hunter looked really scared, he had never seen Varian this angry before. He didn't even know what he was talking about. He grabbed Varian's arm to try and calm him down but that was when he accidentally pulled up Varian's sleeve and saw something that shook his core. He saw multiple scars on his arm that looked like they were from either a sword or knife. His face went pale seeing the number of scars on Varian. He tried to ask Varian about them, but Varian just pushed Hunter away and told him to get out.
Hunter did as Varian said but he couldn't help but worry about Varian and what he had just said. He decided to ask Luz about Varian. When he did, Luz explained everything about Varian's father, the black rocks, the princess, and everything he did to try and save his father, but it cost him so much. Eda and King overheard Luz explaining everything to Hunter, they didn't even know about Varian's past. "Oh, man. I know the Conformatorium was bad, but this was far worse." Eda stated.
The day went by quickly and Hunter made sure to get Varian as comfortable as possible. Varian let out a few outbursts, but Hunter didn't leave, he made sure Varian knew that he cared about him. Late in the afternoon, Varian finally got better from the mold, his head was covered in different mushrooms, and they crumbled apart. He looked at Hunter who looked like he was crying. Varian asked what was wrong and Hunter told Varian what he had said while he was under the mold.
Varian looked ashamed of his behavior towards Hunter, and he felt so insecure about his scars. "Luz told me everything. I'm so sorry you went through all that. But she didn't know about the scars." Hunter explained.
Varian pulled his shirt back and revealed more scars on his back, some were from a whip while others looked like bruises from a fist. "This is what happens to traitors in Corona," he stated, blankly.
Varian began telling Hunter about his experience in the dungeons, he broke down in tears for most of the explanation. Ruddiger and Sapphire nuzzled against Varian to calm him down after he told Hunter everything. Hunter told Varian that he was glad he told him everything about his past. Varian asked Hunter why he stayed at the Owl House. He told Varian that he stayed to take care of him. Varian thanked Hunter for everything and apologized for making things difficult with the mold.
"It's gonna take a lot more than that to scare me away. Also, I have something to show you." Hunter said.
He pulled out an old dusty journal from his bag and handed it to Varian. He opened the journal and started flipping through the pages finding different alchemy solutions and even some sketches of machines. He looked at the writing closer and saw the name Demanitus on one of the pages. "This is... This is Lord Demanitus's lost journal! He wrote some of his greatest inventions here and look at this! There are even some potion recipes in here! He must have been on the Boiling Isle just like that Philip guy!' Varian ranted.
Varian blushed so hard feeling embarrassed, but Hunter just sat down beside him. "What else did this Demanitus guy do?" Hunter asked.
Varian and Hunter spent over two hours talking and looking through the journal. Sometimes Hunter's hand would brush up against Varian's without him knowing and that made the two blush. Luz peaked in to find the boys curled up together and it made her go all fangirl. Hunter looked at the time and that was when he realized he should have been back at the castle by now. He told Varian that he had to go but he would try to see Varian again. Without warning, Hunter gave Varian a peck on the cheek.
Varian's face turned bright red and so did Hunter. "Well, I gotta go. Farewell forever. Bye!" Hunter said then quickly ran out, "Why did I do that?"
Luz's eyes sparkled so much that she thought she was going to explode. She practically told Varian that Hunter had a huge crush on him. Varian just shook it off and just stated that he and Hunter were just friends. "You are blind to love my friend. That was the same move that Amity pulled on me!" Luz stated.
When Hunter snuck back into the castle, he was met with his uncle who was both mad and worried about him. He grounded Hunter from his Golden Guard duties until further notice. Hunter had other things on his mind, like the kiss he had just given Varian before leaving.
