Chapter Fifty: Real Talk
Touya watched as Jaken squawked at the vendors furiously.
"Absolutely not! You will not be using gold accents on a wedding whose colors are silver and blue!" The old man yelled into his phone, "It's going to be a small reception of under twenty people. It's not that hard!"
He watched as Jaken hung up his phone and began scowling at him.
"Well, I don't have all day. Let's go see the location." The toad's words were just as sharp as his mood.
Touya tucked his hands into his pockets, "Don't go giving yourself a heart attack old timer. Kagome would be upset if you stressed yourself into an early grave over her wedding."
When Kagome had asked Jaken if he'd be willing to plan the wedding for them, the little toad had been over the moon. He'd stated that he'd make sure it was an event no one would ever be able to forget then dove head first into getting things streamlined. He had to give the old man credit. He had the florist, photographer, catering and even rentals dealt with in a timely fashion.
He wanted to get a makeup artist for Kagome too but she refused—citing her skin's allergy to most makeup. It was a fact about his fiancée that he hadn't known before. He simply thought that she didn't like makeup. Not that it mattered to him regardless. He knew that she would look good with or without any makeup.
"The house has just finished getting gutted. So watch your step when we get there." Touya warned the imp.
They were heading to the house today for two different reasons. For him, he was going to check on the progress their contractors had made. The restoration work would be starting soon but he wanted to be sure that any issues with mold were dealt with first. The only way to do that would be to check it himself. As for Jaken, well he wanted 'eyes on the ground' so to speak. He wanted to get measurements of their yard and figure out the best placement of tables and chairs for the ceremony. The house would be considered off limits until they were sure it'd be finished in time.
They silently made their way into the train station and boarded the Shinkansen that would get them to Fukuoka. It would take anywhere between five to six hours to arrive which he was not looking forward to.
They settled into their assigned seats as the train started its journey to their new home.
"I don't approve of you." Jaken scowled at him, "You're far too brash and reckless for her."
Touya shot the imp a baleful look, "It's not like we're asking for your permission."
He didn't even bother to ask Sesshoumaru for his approval to marry Kagome. He didn't see any point in it. They were adults and what they did with their lives was their own business. He wasn't keen on asking permission to marry someone he loved.
"Haven't you considered that you might be rushing into this?" Jaken's tone remained scathing, "You're both barely eighteen. You're still children."
Touya felt his brow twitch in irritation. It'd honestly been a while since he'd heard anyone refer to them as 'children'. It was grating in a way that made his teeth clench.
"I don't recall asking for your opinion." He sniped back at him.
Sesshoumaru hadn't complained to them about their decision, so why should Jaken? His own parents were being supportive in their own way. His mother was encouraging him to do his best while Endeavor kept subtly indicating that he wanted to help with the wedding plans—not that he let him.
"I'm still going to give it to you regardless." The toad sneered, "Lord Sesshoumaru believes that everyone should be free to make their own mistakes. So he's not going to try to stop either of you. I on the other hand believe that it'd be wiser to warn you two not to jump into things too fast. You're both still young and figuring out who you are. What happened ten years down the line and you learn that you're both become completely different people with different goals?"
Touya furrowed his brows at the thought, "So you're saying we should wait until we're thirty to get married? How ridiculous."
Jaken's voice remained low yet vicious, "No I'm saying that you shouldn't rush. You're her first real relationship. That mongrel from before doesn't count."
His fingers flexed as the toad continued to talk.
Well it was nice to know that Jaken at least considered him to be Kagome's true first relationship. Seriously though, how terrible had Inuyasha been to her that it made his own family revile him?
"You two should wait until you're comfortable in your careers to settle down. That way you won't be running head first into a wall." The little imp folded his arms over his chest, "She's a good girl and deserves to be with someone who will take their vows all the way to the grave."
Now he understood what this was about.
He thought he would get bored a few years into their marriage.
Touya curled his lips up into a smirk, "With all due respect, I have no intention of looking at anyone else." He then gestured towards his face, "Even if these can be healed, Kagome was the first person who wasn't disgusted by the very sight of me. Do you really think I'd be willing to run around on a girl who'd stood by me when everyone else couldn't even look at me?"
He leaned back in his seat, "I decided to marry her because I knew that I was never going to look at anyone else. It doesn't matter if these scars suddenly heal over night. She's the one I want to make my wife and I see no reason to delay the inevitable."
It was as simple as that really.
He wanted to make her his wife. She accepted his proposal so they were doing everything in their power to make this happen.
"You know old timer," Touya sank into his seat as he folded his arms behind his head. "You'd be a lot more pleasant to talk to if you just got to the point more often. Quit going on rambling rants and be direct. It's a lot easier to talk to you that way."
He heard the frog sputter some insults in his direction but he paid it little heed.
They had one problem solved and a million others to tackle. That was okay though for they had they best butler in the world on their side.
Touya glanced out the window, "Make it a wedding she'll love, old man."
Jaken gave an indignant snort, "As if I wouldn't!"
He and Kagome both could rest a little easier now with one issue resolved.
