One night, Peter was in his apartment, preparing himself to dress up for Mary Jane's play that was coming up in an hour. He went up to his wardrobe and opened it, revealing two sets of different suits that were hanged behind the doors - his Spider-Man costume and his ordinary formal wear.

Given himself some time to contemplate about whether he should only wear just the latter for tonight, Peter reluctantly decided to go along with wearing his costume underneath his formal.

After putting on both his suits, Peter straightened his tie and gave himself a final look on the mirror, which was holding a photo-strip of himself and MJ giving their lovely smiles together, and his seating ticket that the redhead reserved specifically for him.

With all that done, Peter grabbed both his ticket and helmet before heading his way out. As he was locking up his door, Peter heard his name being called out from the bathroom across the apartment hallway.

"RENT!"

It was his landlord.

Not wanting to deal with him right now, especially on this special night, Peter ran in a panicked rush, only barely making it half way down the stairs as Mr. Ditkovich was screaming at him from the railings.

"Where is my money?!"

Miraculously, Peter somehow managed to escape Mr. Ditkovich's vicious wrath and made it out of the apartment.

Feeling a little relieved to be out of his landlord's sight, Peter went over to his moped that was chained securely to a nearby street lamppost. After unlocking its bond from his main means of casual transport, he decided to make his first stop for a nice gift for his girlfriend before heading for her play.

Inside the backroom of the Broadway theater, where Mary Jane will be playing tonight, she was in her make-up chair, sitting alongside her co-star, Louise, as she was applying some blush on her face for her beautiful performance.

Louise noticed how the redhead was looking a bit anxious than other times she's been in the play before. "You seem jittery tonight."

"Oh, you never know who's coming," MJ blushed a little with an excited, yet nervous voice.

In the midst of them almost putting the final touches, the casting director came in to give them the final reminder that the play's about to begin soon. "Ladies, five minutes. Five minutes."

Before making his way to Mary Jane's play, Peter decided to stop by a flower shop, where he decided to get his girlfriend a beautiful gift for her.

With a few moments of scanning through the front displays on the front porch, he found a bunch of beautiful white carnations, matching her retired alter ego's secondary colors. Peter grabbed a handful from its pot and paid the florist a few dollars for them, but as he turned away, he felt a tap his shoulder.

Much to Peter's confused eyebrows, the florist informed him he only paid for three of those white carnations, therefore had to take the rest of back from Peter's hands.

Even though he was disappointed by the revelation of only able to get just three flowers, Peter shrugged it off with an optimistic smile, thinking it's better than with no flowers at all. With that done, he placed the three flowers in the small compartment of his moped, Peter mounted on it as he started it up again and rode off for Mary Jane's play.

Despite thinking things had been going his way so far, it turned out something, or rather someone else, decided to pick the worse night to muck it up for Peter.

Nearby, a good number of police cars, were in hot pursuit of a suspect vehicle, which was consisted of two armed thugs. In their effort to ram the cops off their tail, they were caught in the pathway of Peter's moped.

Sensing the danger that was about to run him over from behind, Peter jumped high from his moped, regrettably letting it be crushed, along with the poor white carnations he was hoping to offer to MJ, as he did a remarkable backflip over the pursued car. After landing safely from the harm of a dangerous car chase, Peter found himself unintentionally witnessed by a handful of kids that just so happened to be standing by the street curb.

"How'd you do that?" One of the kids asked in a shocked tone.

Peter realized he found himself caught for showing off his natural reflexes in front of them. He stood back up and tried to come up with something. "Uh... work out, plenty of rest," He tried to smoothly lie. "You know, eat your green vegetables."

The kids looked to each other with expressions of disbelief on their faces before turning back to Peter. "That's what my mom is always saying. I just never actually believed her."

Peter just gave a meek smile to their response, feeling a little relieved he managed to protect his secret alter ego at least.

After giving a departing wave to the kids, Peter quickly took off in a different direction for a hidden spot to switch to his Wall-Crawling alter ego, obviously to put an end to the car chase before anyone else could get hurt.

Already changed to his suit, Spider-Man took to the rooftops to gain a better vantage point of the fleeing suspect vehicle. From there, he witnessed one of the thugs' pulled out a shotgun and shot of their pursuers' headlights, making him serve out of control, causing the fellow officers to be caught in the same way, only more dangerously so as the amount of traction caused one of the cars to be lifted in the air... towards a crowd of innocents.

Jumping in at the last second, Spider-Man managed to spin a series of webbing around the air-bounded police car, suspending it in mid-air as it was hovering on top of the crowd that it would've otherwise caused harm to.

"GO, SPIDEY! GO!"

After hearing a loud shout of encouragement from the crowd he just saved, Spider-Man continued his web-swinging pursue of the suspect car that just passed through an intersection. Just as he narrowly sneaked through a semi-truck that just driven from the left side, Spider-Man used his natural reflexes to jump and swing around the incoming bullets the thugs were firing back at him from inside the car.

Just in close proximity of the thugs' fleeing vehicle and seeing them about to aim their guns at him, Spider-Man lifted his one wrist at them and shot two web bullets at their faces, knocking off their aiming. Now landed on their back hood, before allowing them a chance to shoot back, Spider-Man webbed their hands to their handle of their guns and swung them up in the air, attaching a web-line to a tall light pole.

Now the thugs were over and done with, Peter accommodated their car and hoped he could make it in time for MJ's play.

Sadly for him, that didn't seem to be the case.

Elsewhere, the theater was already packed and the play was already in the middle of its story session. The space of the stage was filled up by a mock-up interior that's resembling a late 19th century decor. MJ and Louise were draped in the style of the same time period; they were sporting fancy flower hats and classic dresses.

"... I am more than content with what Mr. Moncrieff said," MJ spoken her character's lines in a faint British accent. "His voice alone inspires one with absolute credulity."

"Then, you think we should forgive them?" Louise said in her own in-character voice.

For a moment, MJ gave a quick glance to the audience, only to notice one empty seat sticking out among them. She mentally sighed to herself, knowing what that means, but that doesn't mean she should blame him for it either. She could only hope he at least be out there, waiting for her.

Regaining back her focus on the play, MJ did a smile and heavy nod to her co-star as she said her next line.

"Yes... I believe we should."

Meanwhile outside of the theater, Peter managed to collect his discarded formal clothing and redress himself as he carelessly parked the car he jacked from the thugs just outside the front entrance.

As Peter hopped out of the car, a beat cop came from around the corner and called out to him. "Hey! Hey, chief!" He tried to grab his attention. "You parked there, I'm towing it."

Stopping himself for a moment, Peter just shook his head, not giving a damn about the car. Besides, it was the thugs' to begin with, not his anyway. "Whatever," He said nonchalantly, much to the beat cop's confused eyebrows.

After ignoring the beat cop and entering inside the theater, Peter was met with the usher, who was standing in front of entrance doors to the play.

"Uh, shoelace," The usher quickly pointed at Peter's feet upon his entry.

Realizing he was still improperly dressed in his rush to get to the theater, Peter kneeled down and tied his loose shoelace. After having it done up, he continued to walk forward.

"You might wanna... " The usher's words trailed off, subtly referring to Peter's loose tie when he was gesturing with his own bow-tie. After seeing the young gentleman done it up, he lifted his finger up when he noticed he's still walking up to the doors. "Can I help you?"

"Yeah, I, uh... " Peter reached for something inside his pocket, pulling it out to reveal his admission ticket to the play. "... I'm here to see the show."

"Well, I'm sorry, sir. No's to be seated after the doors are closed," The usher gestured to the two worded signs embed on the doors behind him. " It helps maintain the illusion" He then leaned close with a whisper, as if it was something sacred.

"Uh, Ms. Watson... she's actually a girlfriend of mine. And she wants me to come," Peter tried to convince the usher.

"But not to come late," The usher declined Peter's insistence once more. "And personal relationships with any of the cast within the show doesn't offer you any special privileges."

"I have to see the show," Peter tried pressing on. "Just let me in, I'll stand in the -"

The usher silenced him with a finger on his lips, giving one last gesture towards the embed signs.

QUIET

PLAY IS IN

PROGRESS

Knowing there's no point in arguing with the usher, Peter just simply turned away from the doors and walked out of the theater, pouting to himself in disappointment.

As the play was already finished and the attending audience were going home for the night, Mary Jane and her co-cast, Louise Wood stepped out of the staff only entrance, which was only a few doors away from the theater.

"Are you sure you don't wanna come tonight," Louise asked her co-star.

"Yeah, I'm sure," MJ nodded, feeling very certain about a particular someone waiting for her.

"Call me. You look great tonight," Louise said her departing words to the redhead.

After seeing her co-star left, MJ remained idling around the side curb. After a few moments of waiting, she heard someone calling to her from behind.

"Can I have an autograph from you, Little Miss?"

As MJ turned around in reaction to the voice, her expression turned to full shock when she saw a very young woman with an ear-lengthen brown hair, containing facial features that's similar to the redhead's, only on a little thinner side, yet looked a few years older in some spots. The brunette was also wearing a green sweater with her white collared shirt sticking out around her neck and navy trousers.

"What? Can't I watch my baby sister achieving her biggest dream on stage?" She teased with a fondly voice.

"GAYLE!" The redhead quickly engulfed her big sister with the most surprised, yet happiest hug ever.

"Hey, Little Sis," Gayle returned the lovely gesture to her little sister.

"What are you doing here?"

"What? Can't her big sister not allowed to see her little sister achieving one of the best highlights of her life?"

MJ still kept smiling in awe when her big sister standing right in front of her after four years of being away from home. "Oh, it's great to see you again," She expressed happily.

"You too, Mary Jane."

After breaking up the heartwarming hug, MJ suddenly got a few curious questions. "How long you been back?"

"Just a couple of days. Been checking around the town since I'm now on break from Florida."

"Speaking of which, how's your scholarship?"

"Oh, very extravagant," Gayle said with a proud grin. "Howard offered me everything I'd been dreamed of. Just got til the next fall to finally earn my majors and a chance to audition with one of the best elite dancers in the state."

"Wow! That's awesome!" MJ smiled in a proud tone.

"Thanks," Gayle said gleefully. "And how about you, Miss Broadway Star? Finally living your dream, I see," She nodded her head, gesturing to the theater that was right next to them.

"Well, it's nothing short of a good luck that got me a spot to my first big acting gig," MJ said humbly.

"Oh, please," Gayle disagreed with a scoff. "If nobody can see how good my little sister is on that stage, they really need a big fat reality check."

After a few minutes of reunited siblings' conversation, Gayle noticed how late the night was. "You're hungry? I'm actually staying in a hotel for a couple of weeks; it even got the best food service there."

Before MJ could reply, she suddenly felt that tinkling sensation at the back of her head. It's the same familiar feeling that occurred numerous of times in the past. Only this time, she knew what that feeling means.

He's not too far away.

So, with a change of mind to look out for him, MJ pretended to look down at her watch and declined the offer with a shook of her head. "Oh, I really wish, Gayle, but I got some few things I need to do for tomorrow. How about we meet up afterwards?"

"If you say so," With that, Gayle gave the redhead one final hug for the night. "See you around, Little Sis."

With a smile, MJ returned the hug. "You too, Big Sis."

After breaking up the lovely hug and giving a waving goodbye to Gayle as she was already off in the distance, Mary Jane turned back the theater and let that twinkling sensation guided her eyes that it had been trying for the past couple of minutes.

In just a few moments, MJ found someone standing alone across the street, noticing the sulking expression on his face as his right fist being squeezed shut the moment he saw her eyes on him.

It was Peter.

Although he tried to hide it, MJ could easily tell he's probably self-loathing himself for not making to her show, for breaking his promise to be there for her. Of course, she wouldn't blame him for that at all, knowing Peter likely encountered some crime that he couldn't even avoid, even if he wanted to.

His own sense of responsibility, along with his guilty complex, always been a personal toll on him.

Thinking Peter just needs some reassurance that he shouldn't blame himself for missing out her play, MJ tried to cross the street, but was immediately got cut off by the police cars that just passing by, blocking her and Peter's way to each other, as if their separate paths in life refused to them cross.

Knowing there's probably more lives were at stake, judging by the amount of police passing by, MJ gave an understandable and permitting nod, nonverbally telling him it's okay for Peter to go.

Noticing the nod, even from a considerable distance, Peter returned the gesture of his own to his girlfriend, albeit with a sad expression, and followed after the police cars.

Times like these, Mary Jane felt conflicted with herself, for leaving Peter with the burden alone, but she already made up her mind to putting her life in front first. It may be a selfish thought, but sometimes past experiences in life had a way to make you see it differently.

As Peter was trailing behind the police, he spotted an empty alleyway in the corner of his eyes. Finally found an area to change, he took a different direction and ran towards it.

Running deep through the dirty smell and steamy gas of the alleyway, Peter buttoned his formal suit and pulled off his tie, revealing his Spider-Man costume underneath.

After discarding the rest of his clothes and pulling down his mask to cover his entire face, the now-suited up Spider-Man shot a web to the buildings above him, forcefully launching himself from the alleyway as a loud self-loathing sound of grunt and desperation coming out of his lungs.

Now above the streets and following the sounds of the sirens, Spider-Man lifted himself to the skyscraper levels to gain a lead ahead on the source of why these many police were in high pursuit.

As he was about to lift his one arm to aim another web, nothing strangely came out, leaving him suspended in midair briefly without another web to hold him.

When the shocked realization kicked in, Spider-Man suddenly falling back down to the Earth before landing hard on a random rooftop. Miraculously, he somehow managed to survive a large dive without a single scratch on him, albeit, it may had left a back problem.

"What was that?" Spider-Man questioned the sudden events that just happened to him as he stood back up from his fall.

Removing his mask to get a better look, Peter lifted his glove portion of his costume to reveal his wrist. After a little inspection, nothing seemed to be wrong by the look of it, leaving him baffled. Thinking it was just a fluke, he just shrugged it off and leaped to the far edge of the building to get a better angle of the city streets below.

Peter tried thrusting out his wrist again to shoot his webs, but only a sound of splatter came out of it. After examining his wrist to figure out why his webs not working, that's when Peter realized something the moment he had his widened eyes directed below his feet. He was still standing way above the city streets.

Knowing he couldn't risk jumping off the building if his other powers were also potentially out of commission as much as his webs, Peter looked around to see if there's any other ways off the roof he was standing on safely.

Words: 3,150

A/N: So, Peter's gotten through a rough night for missing out MJ's play, yet due to her beforehand knowledge of his alter ego and the hardship experiences of being a crimefighter during her time as Spinneret, she understood to not give him a hard time as she would originally.

Next chapter won't be any different from the movie, as it will be just simply be introduction to Doctor Otto Octavius's turn to villainy.

And for those who hadn't checked my latest casting cards, for who I had fan-casted as Gayle Watson, it's Sarah Michelle Gellar. If I were to be honest, the reason I got her to be Gayle in this universe was because I remembered she played a ver. of Raimiverse MJ in that Jack Black Spider-Man Parody, and I thought this would be more of an inside joke.

Anyway, any constructive criticisms and comments would be greatly appreciated. I hope you enjoy reading this chapter.
