Jacob's POV

"You ready to get out of here?" As much as I would've loved to sit and talk to her all night, I knew it was time to get her home.

"I guess we have to." She smiled but something in her eyes had me hoping she was a little disappointed for the night to end.

"I'll close out up front and be right back." I started to get up from the booth.

"Actually, I'm going to run to the restroom. I'll meet you at the door." With a shy smile, she walked in the opposite direction. As soon as she rounded the corner, I let out a loud exhale.

Man, this imprinting feeling was no joke. A part of me twinged at even the short distance between us right now. We'd had the best night together; laughing through our games and playfully arguing about our favorite things. Aside from the moments I panicked about her parents finding out, I couldn't imagine a better first date.

My brain halted on the word date. I really couldn't see this as a date until she knew the truth and she shared hers too. If felt like an anvil hanging over our heads, ready to drop at any moment. But how to tell her? I couldn't even imagine the conversation.

I made my way up to the register, annoyed to see a line multiple people deep. Many minutes went by as I inched my way forward. When I was almost to the front, I had a sense Renesmee was on her way back. I turned to see her making her way towards me, her smile hitting me square in the chest. She was nearly to my side when someone called her name from the other side of the dining room.

"Renesmee!" A vaguely familiar brunette waved her hand above her head. Turning to the sound, Renesmee made her way over to their table, the brunette with two men. I bristled seeing that and fought the urge to walk over there as well.

I continued to stare at the group, feeling that I knew them from somewhere. The blond man turned his head and it all clicked. Newton I snorted mentally. I hadn't forgotten his obsessive behavior toward Bella all those years ago. If he only knew who he was talking to now.

I worked to ignore them, only peering over a couple times as I continued to wait. Eventually, just as I finished my turn to pay, she waved goodbye and joined me. I smiled brightly at her, so happy to have her back at my side, but she didn't meet my eyes.

During our walk to the car, she chewed her bottom lip, peering up at me now and then. Her change of mood worried me, what was she thinking now? Annoyance flared, had Newton said something to upset her? I owed that dweeb a punch to the jaw.

I couldn't waste time worrying about Newton, though. I had to tell her the truth tonight. I couldn't take it anymore. The entire drive to Charlie's, I wasn't sure if my brain had ever been so full. Thoughts were buzzing around in circles.

How do I even begin to tell her the truth? What will she say? What will THEY say? Edward will kill me, I'm sure of it. Hell maybe Bella will first. HOW did this even happen? Are we sure she's their kid?

I peeked a glance over at her. She was staring at the window, but turned and met my eyes with a tight smile.

Yep, those eyes. No doubt she's Bella's. And that hair, it matches Edward's to a tee. How did I not see that immediately?

I continued to try to breathe deeply to keep the anxiety at bay—rehearsing and editing lines to say in my head.

I pulled up to a stop outside the house. I silently got out and opened her door. We walked together to the front porch, still neither of us talking. I should've realized something was on her mind, but my mind was so full it was hard to think of much else.

We stopped at the door to face each other. "Jacob," she started to say, pausing. She steeled herself and tried again.

"Jacob, I have to ask. Something came up at the restaurant tonight, when you were cashing out. I don't know how else to ask this, but…did you know Bella Swan? Like before, when she lived here?"

Damn it, I was too late. For a moment, I looked over her shoulder, buying myself time.

Then, I saw it. Something I should've seen as soon as we turned onto her street, an unfamiliar and very expensive car. While I had never seen the car before, I felt confident I knew the only person rich enough to drive a car like that in this town. I pulled in a gasp and that's when it registered. A scent that used to be the bane of my existence. And another scent, unfamiliar, but similar to one I'd once known. My nose wrinkled. I couldn't believe I was so oblivious before. My mind was truly in a mush.

Before I could answer her, before I could even think about what was happening around me, the door was jerked open behind us.

"Yes Jacob," his dark voice sneered. "Did you know Bella Swan?"

A/N: Anyone see that coming?? Hehe ;) I'm finally getting to the parts I've been dying to share!
