"Mater, are you sure about us doing this?"
"I'm not doin' this."
Later that evening, the three cars were over at a large open field not too far off from Cadillac Range, which could be seen in the distance, a short drive away from Radiator Springs, with a number of tractors sleeping in the field below.
All of the Tractors were Holstein Heifer Chewall Diesel Powered tractors. Their liveries were varied between many different paint schemes, the most common out of them all being pink with brown spots and slight hints of rust. Another livery that the tractors can be seen in is a much whiter colour, with the same brown spots and slight hints of rust. The tractors have four wheels; the front two displayed close together, making them appear to only have three wheels. Attached to them is a thin, tall stick that connects them to the body. Both back wheels are considerably larger than the front two, and are parallel to each other. The rims are very rusty and dirty.
"Oh, come on, you'll love it." Mater snickered, as he looks on and eyes the sleeping tractors out in the field. "Tractor-tippin's fun."
McQueen sighed aloud. "This is ridiculous."
"So, what are we to do here, Mater?" Braedey asked.
Mater now leaned over to the two racers. "All right, listen. When I say go, we go. But don't let Frank catch ya. Go!" With that, he immediately raced off into the field, now leaving the two cars behind.
McQueen was taken back by Mater. "Whoa! Wait! Who, who's Frank?" He called quietly, but Mater didn't hear him, as he entered the field of tractors. "Mater. Wait, Mater!" Lightning then followed after the tow truck, Braedey following behind them.
"So, what do we do here, Mater?" Braedey asked as he rolls up alongside. "Is there a way to tip the tractors?" He questioned.
"Okay, here's what you do. You just sneak up in front of 'em, and then honk. And they do the rest. Watch this." Mater drove up to one tractor, as both Braedey and Lightning stayed back to watch.
Mater slowly crept up in front of the sleeping tractor, as if he were a predator stalking its prey in the wild. He stopped a few feet away, then honked his horn loudly. The tractor woke with a start, its engine chugging. As Mater reversed away over to the two, the tractor rises up on its back wheels, mooing out, but its centre of gravity went backwards too far, and it fell on its back. Then, there was a gurgling sound, and the tractor backfired, letting two smoke rings out of its exhaust.
Mater laughed out loud, as the two racers looked at him confused, but Braedey cracked a smile after this. "I swear, tractors is so dumb! I tell you what, buds, you don't get much better than this." Mater added in.
"That was amusing." Braedey commented.
"Yep, you're livin' the dream, Mater boy." McQueen replied back, then he and Bradey look over to see Mater heading to another tractor.
Mater now jumped into the air, then as he lands, he now honks his horn loudly, waking the tractor. As Mater then drove up to Braedey and Lightning, he got into a position like he was stretching, and as the tractor backfired, it was as if he passed gas.
Mater laughed, and looked back at the two cars, Braedey snickering lightly at this. "I don't care who you are, that's funny right there. Oh, you turn, buds." He now said to the two cars.
McQueen shook his head. "Mater, we can't. We don't even have horns." He stated.
"I could try." Braedey spoke up. "I mean, I do have a horn installed."
Lightning looked over at him confused. "Since when did you have a horn?" He asked in surprise.
"I wasn't always a racecar for most of my life, Lightning." Braedey replied back, then drove up to a sleeping tractor. "Just watch..."
Once he was in front of the tractor, Braedey eyed it, even though it was fast asleep. He then looks over to Mater and Lightning, the former tow truck now giving him the 'go on' posture with his right wheel. Braedey smirked and positioned himself. Then, he honks his horn, which sounds like a Corvette's horn, the tractor startled awake in response. As he rolled back, the tractor rolls forward, then tips over, and backfired.
Braedey and Mater laugh, as the former drove up to the two, Lightning feeling left out of this. "You are right about those tractors, Mater. They are SO stupid!" Braedey laughed, then he settled down, and looked to Lightning. "McQueen, you've got to try this."
"Braedey, I don't have a horn, remember?" Lightning reminded him.
Mater smirked at McQueen. "Baby."
McQueen frowned. "I'm not a baby." Mater then started clicking like a chicken, flapping his side view mirrors in the process, and eventually scraping the left rear tyres on the ground. "Fine. Stop! stop, okay? All right. I'll do something." Lightning told him, and both Mater and Braedey sat back to watch the show.
Once Lightning was in front of the tractor, he looked at it, even while it's asleep. He then looked to Mater and Braedey, the two of them giving him the 'go on' posture with their front right wheels. Lightning rolled his eyes, and positioned himself, ready to give it his all. Then, he revved his engine loudly, louder than ever before. All at once, all of the tractors in the field awoke from this in fright. They all exclaimed, then started to tip themselves over onto their backs. As soon as they all fell onto their backs, they began to make gurgling sounds, and McQueen, Braedey, and Mater look at each other. Then, the tractors all backfire in timed unison, until one ended it with a full backfire.
Two seconds of silence later, Lightning, Braedey, and Mater all crack up laughing from what just happened, seeing the funny side behind all of this. But then, there was a dark angry moo coming from the thick of the bushes nearby, making the three stop laughing. Then, there was a light was coming from the bushes.
"Uh... what was that?" Braedey asked in trepidation.
"That's Frank." Was all Mater replied, and he then raced off in the other direction. Braedey followed after the tow truck in agreement, whilst Lightning stood there, confused.
Then, something large ripped through the bushes, the light coming from it. It was none other than Frank, a humungous combine harvester bull!!! Frank is an XXL Metroactual Combine, which resembles a Case IH Axial-Flow 7010 Combine. He has a large spinning combine blade attached to his front. Attached to his roof are two horns, and his nose features a ring. Frank is painted in maroon red, featuring slight rust and dirt. All of his other features, including his ring, horns, and combine blade, are all painted in a dark shade of grey.
Frank bellowed out, seeing Lightning in front of him. McQueen screamed out, and with spinning rear tyres, started to race away from the combine, who sets off in pursuit of the red racecar, McQueen racing as fast as he can on the dirt.
Braedey looked back to see what was chasing them, as Lightning drove up to him and Mater. "A combine? Frank is a combine harvester?!" He yelled. "Why couldn't he be an old and slow bulldozer?"
Mater was laughing his head off during all of this. "Run!" He laughed to the two cars, as they raced about the fields. "Run!!! Run!! Here he comes, look out!" He laughed out, as the three were making their way towards a broken section of fence. Frank was hot on their tail, and was closing in fast. "Run! He's gonna get ya!" Later laughed.
Sure enough, Mater, Braedey, and McQueen raced out of the field, Frank stopping at the fence line. The tow truck drove away with a smile, McQueen and Braedey both sliding across the dirt as they drove off, leaving Frank behind to watch, as the three raced off back to Radiator Springs, the three of them laughing with one another after that near-death encounter.
Meanwhile, back in town over at the Cozy Cone, Sally was reading a book inside of the motel, with Mary looking at a motoring magazine. It was rather quiet, since everyone else had gone to sleep and the silence across the town was deafening.
Just then, the shimmer of headlights now got Sally's attention. It could mean something. "Customers!" She drove outside, and she saw the neon sign for the motel was off. She turned it on, but she had to fiddle around with it to try and make it work properly. Eventually, she got it working, and she looks down the road to see if anyone is coming. Mary opted to do so and take a look as well to see what's going on.
"Tomorrow night, we can go look for the ghostlight!" Sally and Mary both look down the road, and they saw Mater with Braedey and Lightning. With a sigh, Sally drove back into the motel, but watched from afar, Mary doing the same.
"I can't wait, Mater." McQueen replied sarcastically.
"Oh, yeah, I'm tellin' ya!" Mater sighed as he laughed from what had happened earlier. "Oh, boy, you gotta admit that was fu-unn!" He laughed.
McQueen rolled his eyes. "Oh, yeah... yeah." He looks away.
"Can't you loosen up something for just one day, McQueen?" Braedey asked to his fellow racer. "You have to admit, it was fun with the tractor tipping. I mean, aside from Frank appearing, of course."
Mater looked at McQueen. "Well, we better get you back to the impound lot." He said next.
"You know, actually, Sally's gonna let me stay at the motel." McQueen now said to the tow truck, getting both Braedey and Mater's attention as they looked at him.
Mater smirked. "Aaaah... Gettin' cozy at the Cone, is we?" He laughed and snickered.
McQueen scoffed back at what Mater is saying. "Oh, come on... No. No, are you kidding? Besides, she can't stand me. And I don't like her, to be honest." He looks away.
Mater didn't believe what McQueen is saying. "Yeah, you probably right. Hey, look, there's Miss Sally!" He abruptly pointed to the right.
McQueen immediately looked over. "Where, where?"
Mater laughed with Braedey, as McQueen groaned in annoyance, the three of them driving along. "You're in love with Miss Sally."
McQueen scoffed. "No, I'm not."
"Yes, you do."
"No way."
"Way."
"Come on, look-"
Mater then spun around, and he started to drive backwards. "~You're in love with Miss Sally. You're in love with Miss Sally~." He sang out.
McQueen rolled his eyes. "Okay, that's real mature, Mater, real grown up."
"You love her." You love her." Mater repeated this saying about seven times, whilst Braedey and Lightning were concerned about where the tow truck was going.
McQueen sighed in annoyance. "Mater, Mater, Mater, enough." He told him, and Mater laughed. "Will you stop that?" McQueen now asked.
Mater raised an eyebrow as he keeps driving backwards. "Stop what?" He questioned.
"That driving backwards stuff. It's creeping me out. You're gonna wreck or somethin'." Lightning replied.
Mater looked at the racecar as if he was crazy as he stops. "Wreck? Shoot! I'm the world's best backwards driver! You just watch this right here, lover boy." He smiles as he then turns on his siren light and roof lights, and he suddenly began to quickly drive backwards, heading towards one of the Cozy Cone!!
"What are you doing? Watch out!" Lightning called, but Mater began to race about the Cozy Cone Motel, having the time of his life, whilst Sally and Mary watched on from inside, seeing the tow truck racing about backwards. "Look out! Mater? Mater! Mater!"
Mater laughed to himself, as he exited the motel area, him now heading into the dirt. He soon pulled to a stop, but as he does so, his engine revved out, and he suddenly began to spin on the spot like a top, spinning at such incredible speed!!
"Hey, take it easy, Mater!" McQueen called.
"You're gonna blow a head gasket!" Braedey added in.
But, Mater didn't hear them. He screamed out happily, seeing everything go around and around as he keeps spinning around, as he was getting dizzy. Then, once he had straightened himself out, he laughs aloud as he now started to drive backwards again, heading off into a wooded forest that was nearby the town and motel. All that could be seen of Mater was the flashing lights amongst the trees, as well as the sound of him blubbering as he goes along. Then, he somehow manages to jump up high into the air in front of the moon, yelling out happily, then lands back into the forest.
McQueen laughed to himself as he looks on. "He's nuts."
Mater could be heard whooping aloud, then he emerges out of the forest, heading towards the two red racecars. "No need to watch where I'm goin'." He called, then he spun around, and came to a stop before the two. "Just need to know where I've been." He smiled, and he turned off his lights.
McQueen and Braedey were amazed by what Mater could do with his backwards driving. "Whoa, that was beyond incredible!" Braedey commented first to Mater.
"How'd you do that?" McQueen asked next.
Mater now waved his two mirrors. "Rearview mirrors. We'll get you some, and I'll teach you if you want." He offered to the two.
"Yeah. That would be great." Braedey nodded at this. "One would think driving backwards would be difficult, but not anymore." He then chuckled. "Imagine that - driving backwards at a hundred miles an hour..."
"Yeah, maybe I'll use it in our big race." Lightning chuckled with a smile, as he continues to drive up the street with Mater and Braedey behind.
"What's so important about this race of yours, anyway?" Mater now asked. Lightning stopped and faces Mater, as Braedey did so also.
"Mater, you need to understand about this from our perspective." Braedey spoke up to Mater. "This isn't just any race. We are talking about the Piston Cup itself! We've been dreaming about it our whole lives! If either Lightning and I cross that finish line in California, we'll be the first rookies in racing history EVER to win it."
"And when we do, we're talkin' big new sponsor, with private helicopters." Lightning continued as he looks away with a smile. "No more medicated bumper ointment. No more rusty old cars."
Mater now seemed hurt. "What's wrong with rusty old cars?" He asked.
McQueen stopped and he turned to him. "Well, I don't mean you, Mater. I mean other old cars. You know? Not like you. I like you."
"Nahhh, it's okay, buddy." Mater's expression changed as he looks to them. "Hey, you think maybe one day I can get a ride in one of them helicopters? I mean, l've always wanted to ride in one of them fancy helicopters."
"You know what? If things go one way or another, we'll see what we can do." Braedey answered to Mater.
McQueen nodded. "Yeah, yeah, yeah, sure, sure."
Mater wagged his tow arm, like he was a dog. "You mean it?" He asked excitedly to the two racecars.
McQueen nodded as he looks away. "Oh, yeah. Anything you say." He answered.
"I knew it." Mater smiled happily at the two. "I knowed I made a good choice!"
McQueen looked at the tow truck. "In what?" He asked.
"Yeah. In what, exactly?" Braedey inquired curiously.
Mater smiled. "My best friends."
Lightning stopped and he could not believe it, and he still smiled back at Mater. Braedey smiled back to the tow truck also, knowing he's a great friend with Mater, and the tow truck felt the same way.
Mater then started to swing his tow cable about him like a helicopter, as he turned on his lights, and began to reverse away. "See you tomorrow, buddies! ~McQueen and Sally parked beneath a tree, K-I-S somethin'-somethin'-somethin'-t~!!" He sang out aloud as he drove off to his salvage yard.
McQueen laughed out, as did Braedey, the two of them both looking on at the tow truck that drove away. Then, McQueen decided to try out reversing, nearly fishtailing away. With a slow start, he began to head off to cone 1, as Braedey drove off to cone 2. As they do so, Mary and Sally have been watching on with the interaction between both racecars and tow truck, seeing them all getting along.
McQueen looks on at the cones as he reversed along. "Number one... Number one..." He then saw the number one cone. "Ahhh... Number one." He drove in, and he looks about the cone, seeing the cozy interior and styling. "Ahh, this is nice." He commented.
Sally quietly drove up. "Hey, Stickers." She called out, then the two of them jumped in fright from this. "I'm sorry." She apologised.
McQueen now turned around to face Sally. "Wohho!! You scared me. You gotta be careful." He said to her.
"I scared myself scaring you scaring me." Sally added with a small smile.
McQueen shrugged back with his wheels. "I mean, I wasn't like "scared" scared." He insisted.
Sally shook her head. "No, of course not. Not."
McQueen trailed off. "I was more..."
Braedey now soon drove over to his cone as this was going on, and as he does so, he saw Mary drive up to him. "Hey, what's up, Mary?" He asked in surprise.
"I just overheard you and McQueen talking to Mater." Mary replied.
Braedey stopped before he could reverse into the cone, and he looked at her. "When? Just, just now? What, what did, what did you hear?" He asked quickly to her.
"Oh, just something about a helicopter ride." Mary replied back.
"Oh, right." Braedey smiled at that. "That."
"Did you really mean it?" Mary asked to him.
Braedey raised an eyebrow. "Mean what?"
"That you'll get him a helicopter ride." Mary replied back to Braedey.
"Oh, who knows if that'll happen?" Braedey asked with a shake of his front wheels. "I mean, first things first. I have to wait for McQueen to finish the road, then we will have to get outta here and make the race."
Mary's face now showed a crestfallen expression. "Braedey, you know Lightning can't always be there for you." She told him. "You need to make your own decisions."
Braedey sighed, looking down at his wheels. "I know." He muttered at this.
"Listen. You're got to make a difference." Mary told him. "Try something else out. Think about it." With that, she drove off back to her place.
"Mary." Braedey called to her, making her turn around. "Thank you. And goodnight."
"You're welcome." Mary replied. "Goodnight." With that, the two headed off to sleep.
"Yeah, okay. G'night." Sally turned around, and was about to leave for the motel.
Lightning sighed and winced at this. "Hey, thank you." He called out.
Sally suddenly stopped and she turned to face Lightning again. "What did you just say?" She inquired.
"You know, thanks for lettin' me stay here. It's nice to be out of the impound, and this is... It's great. Newly refurbished, right?" McQueen asked.
"Yeah." Sally replied back, smiling softly.
"G'night." McQueen said.
"Good night." Sally turned away and she drove away to the motel, a soft smile on her front as she hums to herself.
Mary gave her goodnight before she too drives off back to the main part of the motel, as Lightning heads off to sleep, closing the roller door of the cone. Braedey too reverses into the cone he's sleeping in, and closes the roller door before going to sleep.
