Chapter 64

Roger called out to Freya, "I'm getting a ride to the E.R. Care to join me?"

Freya smiled and quickly joined them.

She smiled at the tall blonde and said, "Me thanks tae ye. Gettin' him tae see a doctor is akin tae pullin' teeth!"

The tall blonde grinned and replied, "Yes, men can be stupid that way, they could be near death and they'll say it doesn't hurt."

She stuck out her hand and said, "It's good to see you guys again, even if the circumstances are lousy!"

Freya shook the much smaller woman's hand and replied, "An' Ah thenk ye fur aw yer help."

Ildico smiled at the towering girl and said, "Let me get my car keys and lock the house, and we'll get going."

She turned and trotted off down the tree lined, narrow street while they dashed into the house to grab their own keys and wallets.

Roger turned to Freya's friends and said, "If you guys like, you can go inside and make yourselves at home while we're gone."

They all grinned as one and went trooping inside.

Freya took his uninjured hand and they quickly walked down the street to Ildi's house.

Ildi was outside by her car, an older Subaru SUV.

They made a few adjustments to the seats and Freya was able to fold herself up and insinuate her seven foot-eight inch frame into the rear seats.

Ildi smiled and remarked, "My ex was six foot nine and we bought this to fit him. I never expected to have anyone so much taller than him as a passenger...Sorry!"

Freya somehow managed a shrug and replied, "Tis nae problem, Ah just hae tae adapt!"

Ildico smiled and pulled out of the driveway.

Twenty minutes later, Ildico pulled into the employee's part of the parking structure and said, "Come with me!"

She strode briskly into the Urgent Care entrance and went up to the nurse on duty, the woman smiled at her and said, "I see you found something to do..."

Then she saw Freya's form looming behind her, she gaped briefly before her professional demeanor resumed control.

Ildico grinned at her and said,"That something found me...These are my neighbors. Roger here got attacked by a Great Dane. Yes, the same one that killed my Spotty Dog last year. Only this time he got killed instead."

Roger smiled grimly as he held up his bandaged arm.

Ildico said, "I gave his arm a rough cleaning and sprayed disinfectant into the puncture wounds. I feel he may have muscle and tendon damage from the bites."

She paused and asked, "Is Dr. Sanjit on duty today?"

The duty nurse shook her head in a 'no' and replied, "Dr. Sadat is on duty today."

Ildi grinned and said cheerfully, "She'll do!"

Ildico turned to them and said, "I'm going to scrub up and prepare to assist, don't go away!"

She waved her I.D. Badge at the door sensor and stepped into the medical complex behind the door.

They found a couple of seats in the waiting room and tried to blend in.

Even sitting down, Freya was obviously quite tall and stood out amongst the rest of the patients who politely stole glances at the towering young giantess among them.

A few minutes later, Ildico came out into the waiting room and beckoned to them. They followed her into the medical complex and were shown to a small room.

She smiled at them and said, "Dr. Sadat will be with you shortly, just wait here."

Minutes later, there was a soft rap on their door and the slim form of Dr. Anwari Sadat came in with a smile on her pretty face.

She briefly gaped at the sight of Freya standing there, her red gold hair nearly touching the ceiling.

Ildico came in right behind her and said, "Dr. Sadat, these are my neighbors, Roger Tate and Freya Sigurdsdottir. He's the injured one."

Dr. Sadat smiled at Ildico and replied amiably, "I did notice his bandages, I just couldn't help noticing Freya!"

She glanced at Roger's bandaged arm and commented, "I can always tell Ildi's work, she's one of our best E.R. Nurses!"

She took out a small pair of angled EMT scissors and gently snipped off Ildi's handiwork exposing his injuries, still oozing blood.

Dr. Sadat said softly, "This is a pretty bad bite...What did this to you?" as she gently examined his arm.

Roger gritted his teeth and replied, "It was a Great Dane, he was going for my throat and I fed him my arm instead."

Dr. Sadat looked over at Ildico and Ildico said grimly, "The same one that killed my Spotty Dog last year."

Dr. Sadat nodded and asked, "So what became of this dog?"

Ildico smiled and replied, "He was killed by an even bigger animal, a giant wolf. Roger and Freya have a giant wolf living with them and she came to his aid. She's kinda like the neighborhood big dog that all the kids flock to."

Dr. Sadat paused in her examination and asked, "Aren't Great Danes as big as wolves? How big is a giant wolf?"

Freya smiled and remarked, "Sasha is a great guardian wolf, her kind cam wi' us when we left Jotunhein tae cam haur."

At 's puzzled expression, Roger said, "Sasha is about as big as a Shetland pony, she came down from Canada to live with us and protect us. As soon as I can, I'm getting her some really big beef bones to chew on, as a thank you for saving my life."

Dr. Sadat smiled and said, "She sounds like a real marvel of a wolf, I'd like to meet her someday."

Roger grinned at her and said in Egyptian, "And she would like to meet you too, Dr. Sadat."

Dr. Sadat's pretty face briefly made an 'O' in her surprise and she asked, "Where did you learn Egyptian?"

Roger smiled at her and replied, "I was an embassy guard in Egypt, among other places and picked up the language along with other languages."

Dr. Sadat smiled and remarked, "You sound like you've led an interesting life."

She resumed her examination and asked him to flex his wrist, twist his forearm and wiggle his fingers.

She watched as he grimaced while twisting his forearm, he seemed to be able to flex his wrist and wiggle his fingers, albeit a bit stiffly due to his injuries.

Finally, she said, "Nothing seems to be broken, you do have issues with rotating your forearm, but that's to be expected with a dog bite injury."

She turned to Ildico and said, "You can finish up here and I'll get back to my rounds."

She looked up at Freya and said, "I do believe you are the tallest person I've ever seen. How old are you?"

Freya smiled at her and replied, "Ah just turned thirt'een ma'am."

Dr. Sadat's dark eyes widened briefly and she said, " Thirteen and you're already this tall?"

She frowned and asked with a hint of concern in her voice, "Have you been checked for any thyroid issues? Your growth is phenomenal!"

Roger, at this point stepped in and replied, "She is in fine health doctor and she does have a primary care physician."

He winked at her and said cheerfully, "How else do you think she gets her playground boo boos looked at?"

Dr. Sadat smiled and replied. "I was merely curious, I don't often see actual young giants in my offices."

She smiled at them and said, "It was a pleasure meeting you two and I suggest you make an appointment and come back in a couple of weeks and we'll see how your arm is healing up."

Her last remark being clearly directed at Roger.

On their way out, Roger stopped at the nurses desk and made an appointment for two weeks in the near future to have his arm checked out.

Threading her way through the traffic on their way back, Ildico asked, "Does Sasha have a veterinarian, has she even seen one?"

Roger adjusted his arm in its sling and replied, "Actually no, she doesn't and she hasn't seen one either. We've been keeping her a secret."

Ildico laughed and said cheerfully, "Dude, the whole neighborhood knows about her, we've all seen her and most of the dogs and kids in the neighborhood love to visit her. When you're away, she'll just go visiting the neighbors, my poor Spotty Dog used to play with her all the time...I think he used to 'like' her if you know what I mean."

ldico smiled at him and said merrily, "Of course if you want to continue believing that Dena and Sasha are secrets. Far be it from me to tell you otherwise!"

Roger could only manage a shrug before he replied, "I figured she would be seen eventually by someone with a badge, we were getting pretty lax about being discreet."

"Well, you do live in a house built for giants. Freya here is the tallest person in Portland, you work primarily at that oddball mansion up behind the neighborhood and you have a number of strange people coming and going at all hours." Remarked Ildico, "We have noticed, that's all."

Roger replied glumly, "We hope we haven't bothered too many people by our presence, but we needed a house big enough for Freya to live in, one she wouldn't outgrow. You saw her in that examination room, her head almost touched the ceiling. Next year, she'll be too tall for that room and by the time she's seventeen, her head will be through the ceiling."

Ildico pulled into their driveway and stopped, "Here we are, back home again!"

Roger smiled at her and said, "Can I buy you a coffee? It's our house brand."

"House brand?"

"Yep, whatever's on sale!"

Ildico grinned at him and replied, "I'll take it black and I want the 50 cent tour of your house." as she shut off her SUV.

Roger glanced back at Freya and asked teasingly, "You did hide all the bodies before leaving, did you not?"

Freya rolled her bright blue eyes and retorted, "Dornt ye get me aw tangled up in yer craziness, yoo're th' one wi' th' bodies tae hide!"

Ildico smiled and said cheerfully, "One big happy family!"

They entered the house and after Roger was checked out by a very concerned Sasha who sniffed his bandaged arm and whined softly until he gently caressed her velvety ears.

Roger led a very impressed Ildico through the bulk of the house as the coffee maker made its bubbling and rumbling and grumbling noises while turning hot water into coffee.

She marveled at the small collection of books and artifacts on display in the living room and parlour which was full of Freya's friends, all playing a video game on the big screen TV.

One of Freya's ancient Jotun language books was lying open on the small reading stand next to her favorite reading chair and Ildico being curious, glanced at it.

"What kind of lettering is this?" She asked.

Roger grinned at her and replied, "Those are Jotun runes. That book came from her grandmother's library which we brought down from Canada. They'll be available for study once the refurbishing of the mansion is finished."

Ildico peered at the runic lettering some more and said quietly, "They remind me of the letters I'd seen on the standing stones I saw in Sweden, when I was there as a child."

Roger chuckled and said, "I've been told that the Scandinavians got the runes from the Jotuns, ask Freya about it if you want to know more, she's becoming quite the scholar when it comes to her people's history."

"Her people?"

"Yes, her people. She is a Jotun and was sent to live with me. Her people are frost giants, not just really tall humans. Her growth rate is perfectly normal among her people."

Ildico stood quietly mulling over his comments until she remarked, "Is she part of this 'coming out of hiding' we've seen in recent years? Those lamias that came from Algeria and the ones from southern Egypt and Chad? The giant wolf and the little wood elf girl living with you guys, they're all a part of this?"

She gazed at him steadily and asked, "What else can we expect to emerge from the shadows?"

Roger could only shrug and say, "To tell you the truth, I have no idea. The emergence of the Jotuns explained all the reports of giant men living in the woods, the giant wolves shows there was some truth to the story of Fenris, the wolf that kills Odin. The wood elves, all the stories of 'wee folk' living amongst the country folk of old."

Ildico sighed and said, "I could use that coffee about now, with a dollop of whiskey if you have any!"

Minutes later she was sitting in the kitchen with a steaming mug of fresh coffee fortified with a splash of Irish whiskey placed in front of her.

Ildico had been momentarily distracted by the sight of a family of wood elves and their troop of large raccoons sauntering through the back door and seating themselves around a small table made just for them.

While Ildico stared, Freya came over to the small table and served food to the little elves and the raccoons who politely thanked her before digging into their food.

Roger smiled at her and explained, "They live primarily up at the library and take care of the place, they like to come down here for meals and to socialize with Dena and Sasha and us, when they feel like it."

Ildico finally tore her eyes away from the "Wee fowk" and she said incredulously, "This house really is a marvel, all these wonderful things and creatures living in our neighborhood."

She smiled at one of the elf children, a tiny girl a foot and a half tall.

The little elf child smiled back and giggled.

Eliciting a squeal of delight from Ildico who gushed, "She is sooo adorable! I just wanna take her home with me and make a little house just her size."

Roger chuckled and remarked playfully, "Careful what you wish for, you just may get what you asked for."

He smiled and added, "The fact that they even let you see them is remarkable in itself. They were living at the library for months before I even knew they were there. It was Dena and Sasha that brought them out of hiding.

"The wood elves and the great guardian wolves live in a symbiotic relationship ordinarily, down here there are no great wolves or even regular wolves for that matter. The humans would shoot them on sight, so this family made do with large raccoons."

Ildico mused, "Where do they get their clothing, where do they get their anything they need I wonder?"

She glanced at Dena who was wearing a pair of neatly tailored blue jeans and a red gingham top tied just below her firm breasts.

"Where did she get those clothes? Those clearly aren't 'native garb' by any means." Roger smiled and replied, "They can make pretty much anything they need, the men are quite clever and very good at metalwork."

For emphasis, he pointed out the necklace Freya was wearing and said, "The father, Snorri made that for her as a gift. Since this family has been living with us we all have benefited. We give them fabrics, they make clothes. We give them better tools they make better things."

Roger smiled and said, "Dena on the other hand, is a force of nature. Freya took her to an anime convention unbeknownst to me of course. They met a fashion doll maker and Dena tried on one of his outfits to his utter delight.

"I found out about all of this when a package arrived filled with doll sized clothing and a catalog with her pictures in it. Naturally, I hit the ceiling, for all the good it did me."

Ildico chuckled and said, "I scared my dad more than a few times while I was growing up. He would yell and carry on, but in the end he would accept it and adapt." Roger grinned and said, "That's me all over!"

Ildico said softly, "Are you worried about what happened today? I mean those two can be pretty aggressive and are not shy about using their attorney."

He shrugged and replied, "Let them, I think they've seen that Sasha has a lot of friends around here and they don't."

Roger grinned at her and said, "If it comes to it, I can always send Sasha and Dena back home again or even move to Canada myself. Her folks would take us in, her brothers have left and their rooms are empty right now and would be plenty big for the two of us."

He looked around at the interior of the spacious kitchen and said, ""I'll miss this big ol' house though. We've been very happy while living here."

Ildico frowned slightly and said, "I hope it doesn't come to that, the whole neighborhood would miss seeing those two making the rounds, begging treats from the neighbors they visit and we'd miss Freya."

She grinned broadly, "And you of course!"

Ildico's phone chimed and she quickly answered it, "I'm so sorry! I forgot about our dinner date, can you give me fifteen minutes? I'm at a neighbor's house right up the street, I'll be right down!"

Ildico practically flew out of the house, hopped into her SUV and with tires squealing in protest, went tearing down the street.

Roger chuckled and remarked to his towering companion, "I guess we distracted her so much she forgot about her dinner date. I'll have to send her a little gift as a "thank you" for all her help today."

He felt her long arms slipping around him and she held him against her youthful bosom, his head between her swelling breasts.

She sighed and held him closely while he slipped his good arm around her supple waist.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke they both lacked the words for their feelings; how did one express the inexpressible?

Freya said softly, "Ah'm sae thankful fur Sasha bein' wi' us today, she saved yer life. Tha' horrible dog cood've killed ye an' Ah woods hae been devastated. Ah hae sae mony feelin's righ' noo, Ah cannae say wha' Ah wantae say, not jist yet, noo is nae th' time ur place, not yet."

Roger squeezed her supple waist as best he could with his good arm, while she snuggled him into her growing bosom.

She relaxed her embrace and he looked up at his towering companion.

He saw that her bright blue eyes were welling with tears and would soon overflow. Roger reached up with his good hand and gently caressed her soft cheek.

Freya smiled at him through her tears and stooped slightly as she kissed him very tenderly, her velvety soft lips pressing against his.

The kiss lingered for several moments and their lips reluctantly parted.

They separated reluctantly, neither one really wanting to end the moment.

He smiled at her and said, "Go and see to your friends, I'll be alright. Once these meds I got kick in, I won't be any trouble."

Freya smiled at him and went into the crowded parlour.

Her friends had a popular video game in play and while two of them were playing the others were either cheering over the gains or jeering at the losses.

There was a gigantic pizza on the table and a cooler full of drinks for between game sustenance.

Lying in her usual place before the hearth was Sasha in all her lupine glory. Meanwhile Dena was happily noshing on a slice of pizza and watching the gamers at play.

Roger made off with a couple of slices of the pizza and retreated to the kitchen, no sense in heating up the stove when there was a communal pizza on the dining room table.

A little while later, feeling a little light headed, Roger went to his room, stripped down to his undies and slipped into his bed a bit early.

At some point during the night, he dreamt he was in the arms of a beautiful Norse goddess who snuggled him against her wonderful bosom and held him closely. Waking to nature's call, Roger saw that his dream had been all too real for lying beside him was Freya.

She had slept with him instead of in her own outsized bed.

Returning to his bed after visiting the water closet down the hall, he slipped into bed alongside his giant sized companion.

She murmured in her sleep and snuggled him into her long, lithe arms, her warm, bare bosom pressing against his bare back.

Roger closed his eyes and drifted back to sleep in the arms of his companion, knowing he was safe from harm.
