I floated in the endless void, my body weightless as I mind struggled to piece together what had just happened. I remembered sparring with Illumine, the Goddess of Light, her golden spear twirling gracefully through the air as they exchanged blows. It was supposed to be a challenge, a test of skill, not something deadly. A reward for all my hardwork, and a chance to see how far I'd come. But then, I recalled the sharp pain as her spear pierced my chest, the world around me fading to black, her stricken face the last thing I saw.
"She's a goddess," I muttered, confused. "Her magic should've stopped me from dying."
As I tried to make sense of it, a voice suddenly echoed through the void, calm and resonant. "That was our doing, Ben Grey. We had to interfere, to stop her magic from working."
My eyes snapped open. He looked around, his heart racing. The darkness around me wasn't empty anymore. Before me stood two towering figures—one bathed in radiant light, and the other cloaked in deep shadow. Antlers and horns adorning their heads respectively.
"We are the Brother Gods," the one of light began, his voice soft yet powerful.
"But we know you've encountered us differently," the dark one continued, his voice a deep, rumbling counterpoint. "In your world, we are known as the Sister Goddesses—the Abyss and the Illuminant One."
I felt a shiver run down my spine. I knew their names well. The Abyss, the goddess of darkness and mystery, and the Illuminant One, the goddess of light and clarity. Yet here, standing before me, they were... different. They radiated both power and something else—an ancient weariness, as though they had been waiting for this moment for eons.
"What do you want with me?" I asked, my voice steady despite the confusion swirling in my mind.
The Brother of Light stepped forward, his luminous form casting long, glowing shadows around them. "We need someone to change our world," he said, his tone both serious and pleading. "And you, Ben, have always been loosely connected to us."
"You've walked paths of both light and dark," the Brother of Darkness added. "Your soul, your very being, is touched by both forces. And because of this, we can send you where we cannot tread."
"Remnant," they said in unison, the word reverberating through the void.
My brow furrowed. Remnant? I had never heard of it before.
The Brother of Light seemed to sense my confusion. "It is a world in need of balance. The forces of darkness are rising, and the light is dimming. We cannot interfere directly, but we can send a champion."
"And you were sparring with Illumine, a variant of our brother in your world," the Brother of Darkness said, his voice almost a growl. "That connection made you the easiest choice to pull in."
I clenched my fists, the weight of their words sinking in. "You're telling me you pulled me out of my world... killed me... because you needed someone to save this Remnant?"
"Yes," the Brother of Light answered, a note of regret in his voice. "We are truly sorry for taking you from your home. But know this—you will not go without aid."
The Brother of Darkness stretched out his hand, and Ben felt a surge of energy course through him. "We will give you upgrades," the dark god said. "Powers to help you survive in Remnant. You will need strength beyond what you possess now to face the challenges ahead."
The Brother of Light followed suit, extending his own hand. "And wisdom to guide you. You must be a beacon, Ben. One that can stand between the light and dark."
My mind raced as the power filled me, my senses sharpening, my body feeling stronger than ever before. What were they doing to me? But even with the gifts they offered, doubt gnawed at the edges of my thoughts.
"I didn't ask for this," I said quietly, my voice almost lost in the void. "I had a life. A purpose. People I cared about."
"We know," the Brother of Light whispered, his radiant form dimming slightly. "And for that, we are sorry."
"But Remnant needs you more," the Brother of Darkness added, his tone firm but not without empathy.
I stared at them, a storm of emotions raging inside me. I had been a soldier, a knight, a protector. I had fought wars, seen death, and made sacrifices. And now, they were asking me to fight again, in a world I didn't know, for reasons I barely understood.
But deep down, a part of me couldn't resist the call. I had always been a warrior, always willing to face the darkness, even when it seemed overwhelming.
After a long moment, I nodded.
"I'll do it," I said, my voice resolute. "But when it's over... I'm going home."
The Brother Gods exchanged a glance, a silent understanding passing between them.
"Then go," the Brother of Light said, his voice warm. "And may both the light and dark guide your path. Find the one named Salem, and stop her"
With a final surge of power, the void around me began to dissolve, the gods fading into the distance. As the world of Remnant began to take shape before me, I felt the weight of this new purpose settle on my shoulders.
