New Family Ch. 02
Billy now sits in the backseat of a station wagon. His eyes could not leave the site of his new guardians. Ivy keeps her focus on the road while Harley sits in the passenger seat, humming to herself while occasionally looking back at the boy to ask questions about him. Harley actually wanted to drive, but Ivy said no since her partner is obviously too excited to make good driving decisions.
Harley suddenly gasps and calls out. "Look!" and points across the street.
The redhead swerves before pulling over to a full stop. "Harley!" she scolds. "Don't you ever do that again! Especially with Billy in the car."
"Oopsie!"
"Now, what was so important you had to interrupt my driving?" instead of getting an answer, Ivy just notices her partner glancing past her. Turning, she finds what has caught the blonde's attention. "An ice cream cart? Seriously, Harl!?"
"Please, Ivy!" Harley begs. "We're bringing Billy home with us. We should celebrate somehow."
Ivy sighs. "Fine! You make it so hard to say no to," and returns the smile.
"Yay!" the blonde kisses her partner on the cheek. "Thanks, Red! You want some ice cream, Billy?"
Billy was finally brought out of his whiplash. "Uh, yeah! I could have some."
"Double yay!" Harley cheered. "What do you want, Ivy?"
At this, the redhead shrugs. "Surprise me."
Just as Billy got out of the car, Harley grabs his hand and starts pulling him across the street. Halfway down the crosswalk, the boy pulls away. "I don't need you to hold my hand! I'm thirteen, not five!" he snaps. That saddens the blond and Billy could have sworn her pigtails drooped. With a sigh, Billy takes her hand, causing the woman to perk back up, and the two continue to the ice cream cart.
Once they reached the cart, Harley orders, "A double chocolate scoop, please!" she then turns to Billy. "What about you?"
He shrugs. "Chocolate sounds good."
"Make that three orders."
The cart owner finishes the scoops and hands two to Harley. Just as Billy reaches for his, a hand grabs his wrist and with sharp nails digging into his skin pulls him away.
"Are you alright, sweetie?" a woman asks him. "I'll get you somewhere safe."
"Wha—" before Billy could say anything, he gets cut off by Harley shouting.
"Hey!" she drops the ice cream and grabs Billy's other arm. "Lay your grubby claws of him!"
Instead of responding directly to Quinn, the woman starts shouting. "Help! Help! She's kidnapping this young boy!"
Harley raises her brows at that.
Ivy approaches them, having noticed the commotion. "What's going on!?"
The woman just continues screaming for help.
A cruiser stops near them, and two cops immediately steps out of the vehicle. "Freeze!" one shouts.
Both former villains knew that nothing they do will turn out in their favor at this point. So, they raise their hands.
One of the cops walks up to Harley and cuffs her. The other who still has a gun on Ivy, turns to the woman that has a hold of Billy. "What happened?"
"Officer," Ivy begins as the other guy is handcuffing her. "This is all a misunderstanding. We—"
"I wasn't asking you!" the cop snaps at her.
The woman wraps an arm around Billy. "I'm Karen and this is my boy."
Billy tried to protest only to have Karen's hand covering his mouth.
The woman continues. "We were going to have some ice cream when these two criminals tried snatching him."
"That's not—" Harley tries to explain only to have the officer snap at her.
"Quiet!" he then turns to the woman, "Well, Karen," the officer smirks at her. "I'm Officer Marcos. We'll take it from here. You and your boy better get going. I'll personally escort these two to the GCPD while my partner gathers a report."
"Thank you, Officer," she starts leading Billy away.
When they rounded the corner, Billy pushes the woman away and starts running with the lady chasing after him. The boy spots an alley and runs into it. Karen hears a shout of "Shazam!" followed by thunderstriking. When she reaches the same alley, it was empty.
.oOo.
Commissioner Gordon sighs, seeing who is currently in interrogation room one. He walks in. "Do you realize what kind of trouble you've gotten yourself in, Ms. Isley?"
"Quinzel-Isley!" the woman glares at the old detective.
"That's right," he sits across from her. "You and Quinn tied the knot. Me and Bullock had a bet going when that would happen. I'm fifty bucks richer and Harv's fifty bucks shorter. So, what happened? You and Harley were doing so well and then this? Attempted kidnapping?"
Ivy crosses her arms, "I'm not saying anything without my lawyer."
"Very well," the commissioner stands up. "You do realize that you and Harley just lost yourselves any hope of you two having a good future," he starts to leave only to be stopped when Ivy spoke.
"That hope was taken from us by one of you," and her glare hardens.
"What do you mean?"
"Check my purse and you'll find out."
With that, Gordon leaves only to run into Detective Montoya leaving Interrogation room two. "Any luck getting anywhere with Quinn?"
Montoya shakes her head. "No. She just keeps rambling about how we took her kid away. Last I checked, she doesn't have any."
Gordon rubs his chin in thought. After a moment, he goes to retrieve Ivy's belongings as he has gotten verbal consent from the former villain.
.oOo.
It's not uncommon for Bullock to run into people with crazy stories and accusations. This is Gotham after. This city is the birthplace of crazy. Not many of them were kids and even fewer have claimed what this kid is telling him.
"Look, Kid! Just give me your parents name and number so I can call them up," Bullock tells him.
Billy sighs. "I told you three times already. My guardians are here."
"Okay, Kid. That story is getting old," the detective glares at the boy. "Now tell me who your parents really are, or I'll put you in lock up for wasting police time!"
Just then, the voice of the commissioner reaches their ears. "Bullock!" the veteran detective walks up to them.
"Hey, Commish! You should here what this kid has to say. His parents are apparently Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy."
Billy glares at him. "They're not my parents. They are my guardians."
He waves the boy off, "Same dif."
"He's telling the truth, Harv," Gordon informs his partner.
That shocked Bullock. "Huh!?"
The Commissioner takes out an envelope. "These are papers granting both Harleen and Pamela Quinzel-Isley legal guardianship over Billy Batson.
It was that moment; Billy finds himself being tackled by Harley. "Billy! They brought you back?" Ivy was not far behind, glaring at the officers.
"Actually, Harley," Commissioner Gordon speaks up. "He came here himself."
"Really?"
"Yeah," Billy nods as Harley lets him go. "You guys done nothing wrong, and that woman was the one creeping me out."
A woman's voice then shouts. "There he is!" it was Karen from earlier along with Officer Marcos. "Nice to see that you're alright, Max," she runs up to him only to be blocked by Harley.
Gordon raises a brow at that. "Max?"
"Yes. He's my boy."
Billy shouts. "No, I'm not, crazy lady!" he turns to the commissioner. "I've never seen this woman before today."
"You must have been brainwashed by the clown and the farmer. He honestly doesn't know what he's talking about."
"Well, Miss…" the commissioner stops, waiting for a name.
"Karen."
"Well, Karen. Mind explaining this to me," he holds up the envelope. "These documents state that Billy here is in the care of these two legally."
"What!? No! That can't be. They must be fake?"
"They're not," Gordon crosses his arms. "I checked to verify them myself. You have any idea how much trouble you've caused? Filing a false police report, kidnapping. We take these things very seriously!"
"I was just protecting the child!" Karen defends herself. "I spotted these two pushing the kid around, I even saw the clown hit him!"
"Harley has not harmed me once. At most, she was smothering me," Billy tells her. "You were the only one to hurt me."
That catches everyone's attention. Especially Commissioner Gordon. "What do you mean by that, son?"
Instead of answering, the boy rolls up his sleeves to reveal a series of scratches and some dried blood. Ivy and Harley gasp with the latter grabbing his arm to better examine it. The former charges towards Karen only to be caught by two officers.
"Let me at her! Let me at her!" Harley shouts but soon calms down and takes a deep breath. "I'm fine. I'm fine. See?" she walks away, only to come running back and continues her shouting as the same officers grabs her again. "Let me at her! Let me at her!"
"See!?" Karen points at Harley while hiding behind Marcos. "This woman is unstable. Criminals like her deserves to be behind bars."
At this, Gordon nods. "I couldn't agree more," the woman beams at him only for her smile to vanish at what he has to say next. "You are under arrest, Karen!"
"What! On what grounds?"
"Let's see here. I've already mentioned false police report and kidnapping. How about assault of a minor?" as Gordon listed off her charges, Bullock and one other officer stepped up behind Karen and grabs her arms. She manages to pull one arm away, only to end up hitting the Commissioner in the face. Gordon wipes away the blood dripping from his nose. "Add assaulting a police officer to that list."
As Karen is being escorted away, Gordon turns to Ivy and Harley, with the blonde finally calmed with the source of her ire gone. "How about we tend to the boy's injuries? We often keep a first aid kit here up front."
Ivy continues her glaring and pulls Billy away from them. "Don't you think you've done enough?"
"You're right. Marcos!" he turns to the officer. "You were the arresting officer, right?"
"Yes, sir!" Marcos stiffens.
"Did you take any witness statements? The report mentioned that there were a few people around, but that's it."
"Well, sir, I left Daniels to look into it."
"You arrested two innocent women!? What were you thinking!?"
"I was—"
"I'll tell you what you were thinking. You thought that these were Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn. What more reason do you need than that? And this would make you a shoe in for a detective. Am I right, officer?" Gordon did not give Marcos time to answer. "As an officer, I shouldn't have to tell you that it doesn't matter who is involved, you don't leave the scene of a crime without all the facts. You understand, Marcos?"
"Y-yes, sir."
"Good! Oh, and by the way. You're suspended without pay, pending a review. You nearly ruined the future of two women who have been nothing but model citizens. Get out of my sight!" at that, Marcos leaves the front desk. Gordon then turns to the two women and the boy. "Is that any better?"
Ivy nods. "It's a start I suppose."
Gordon shakes his head, knowing that there is no pleasing this woman. "Look, ladies. On behalf of the entire GCPD, I would like to apologize," he reaches in his coat pocket to pull out a card. "Here's my number. Something like this happens again, give me a call."
Harley snatches the card. "Sweet! A get out of jail free ticket."
The redhead snaps. "Harley!? She doesn't mean that, Commissioner."
"I hope so. I only get one of those and I plan on using it on myself."
Harley giggles at the joke and Ivy and Billy only smile.
"Now then," Gordon looks back down at the boy. "What about getting the kid a bandage?"
Ivy smiles and lets Billy follow the detective.
Once they were behind the counter, Gordon started cleaning his wounds. "You sure you're going to be alright, Billy?"
The boy glances at his new guardians. "Yeah! I can take care of myself."
"If you say so, son," the commissioner tells him as he finishes wrapping his arm. "Either way," he slips the boy a card. "If anything happens, give me a call. And I mean anything."
"Thank you, Commissioner," Billy slips the card into his jacket pocket.
Gordon then delivers the boy back to his guardians. "Here you go. Good as new. Harley, Ivy. Wish I could have seen you in a better environment. Maybe next time."
Ivy's glare, though soften is still rather harsh. "We'll see, Commissioner." With that the women and Billy leaves the station.
Harley managed to snatch Billy's hand once again. Only this time, the blonde has lost her chipper personality. "I'm sorry, Billy. I really wanted this day to be something special."
The boy shrugs. "It could still be. We can just have ice cream when we get to your guys' place."
That seem to have brighten her day. "Can we, Ivy? Can we?" Harley begs her wife.
Ivy was hesitant, but those bright-blue puppy dog eyes. With a sigh, the redhead tells her. "Sometimes, I wish a could say no to you."
The blond then whispers to Billy, "That means yes."
Ivy heard that and glares at her partner, but soon softens into a smile. "Now, then. How are we going to get back to the car?"
NOTE: Both this chapter and the previous one started out as two different chapters each, but I felt that they were rather short. So I turned four into two.
