Chapter 8

Mash Off

Shelby's voice-over began, "I don't know what's been going on with me lately. I'm always checking to see if my hair looks okay, or if my outfit is on right. Sometimes I even make my breath extra fresh enough. I know what it is. Jack Masterson. Every time I see him, I can't help but smile. He really takes me by surprise. He's great with numbers, he's an incredible music man, he's full of passion and integrity, and he's really sweet to Rachel…and anyone else he happens to come across. I really like spending time with Jack. Am I crazy for being interested in a guy I've known a whole year? What am I saying? A year is more than enough time to get to know someone. What I should do is tell him, just to break the ice. All I have to say is, 'Jack, I really like you.'"

Jack started walking. "Ms. Corcoran."

"Mr. Masterson." Her voice-over started again, "Crap. I chickened out. Maybe it's for the best. I don't want to scare him. I don't even know how he feels about me." She turned around and smiled again. "But, God," her voice-over said, "here's what I do know: he is so damn dreamy."

Meanwhile, in the choir room, Claire managed to perform "Good Morning Baltimore" with great anticipation. When she was done, there was massive applause. Will said, "Wow! Claire, spectacular! What a way to start off this week! You didn't even need an assignment to work on this. You just did it."

Rachel said, "Mr. Shue, while Claire's performance was exceptionally on fire, don't you think that was just a little bit too intense?"

"Well, that depends on what Claire's intentions were when she chose this song."

Claire said, "I guess I just really like Hairspray."

"All right, rock on." Applause met again. Finn smiled at Annie Marie.

Meanwhile, while Sue was running for Congress, Burt was running against her. Of course, Sue would just make up propaganda like she always does, but Burt doesn't play dirty. And then there's Reggie Salazar. No idea who that is. Kurt was very upset with Sue sabotaging his dad's campaign.

In the teachers' lounge, Shelby walked to Will. "Hey, Shelby, what's up?"

"We haven't talked since Mercedes, Brittany and Santana left New Directions. I hope you know I kept my word."

"I know. It was me. They left before they were too stubborn."

"Brittany just wants to do whatever Santana does. Did you get your letter today?"

"Yeah. Figured we'd be up against the Dulcet Dazzlers."

"Don't forget the Unitards." She chuckled.

"Yeah, so lame. I know."

Shelby took one look at Jack and smiled. Jack walked to the coffee maker and Shelby thought to herself, "Jack Masterson, you are just insanely cute. What is your secret?"

"Shelby? Shelby?" Will snapped his fingers, "Shelby."

"Huh? Oh, sorry. What were we talking about again?"

"We may get along. But some of the kids won't. It's the last year for a lot of them and they want to win."

"Well, maybe the competition will bring out the best in them." In a pig's eye.

"We usually do mash-ups around this time."

"You could still do it."

"You know, maybe there's a way to work with all this fighting spirit. Channel it into something great."

"Talk to me."

In the auditorium, Will and Shelby entered announcing a mash-up mash-off. When Jack came in the room, Shelby smiled and felt her face burn. She leaned on the piano, trying to seem casual while he was strumming his guitar singing "Float Away" by Todd Carey. Anne Marie and Ian were singing backup.

Brittany said, "I kinda like this."

Mercedes looked at her like… Jack winked at Rachel and Shelby.

The girls said, "He winked at me." Rachel swooned when Jack was singing. Shelby's face was as red as her dress. They clapped and Anne Marie and Ian took a bow. Jack smiled modestly. Rachel said, "Wow. You three, that was great, but what exactly was the point?"

Will said, "That sometimes combining two or more great voices can create something totally unexpected. It's time we all got serious with some friendly competition."

Anne Marie said, "Each of you is going to go head-to-head."

Ian said, "For a mash-off."

In Shelby's classroom, Jack walked in. "Hi," he said.

"Hey. Jack, you look incredible."

"You don't think it's too much?"

"No. No, not at all. Uh, it's very casual." Her cheeks turned red. "Um, uh, you never told me what it is that you went to LA for."

"It's my grandpa. He, uh…"

"Oh. Oh. Oh, Jack, I'm so sorry."

"Thanks, it's okay. We took good care of him, though. He lived a long life."

"Rachel and I, if we'd known…"

"It's all right."

"Well, why didn't you tell us?"

"I didn't want to bother you. Anyway, the funeral was great. But the mourning is still going on, and my brothers want a meal fit for a king. I don't really have a lot of catering experience."

"Well, maybe that's something I can help you with."

"Really? Can you cook?"

"Well… No. But I can practice a little. I could also order some Breadstix if you're interested."

"Okay, thanks. I'll see you later." He walked off.

"Yeah. See you later." She picked up a folder and fanned herself.

In the choir room, Will said, "We have our work cut out for us. Any song suggestions?"

Artie suggested, "What about the Clash?"

Blaine said, "The Police."

Mike said, "R.E.M."

Kurt said, "The Spice Girls."

Rachel said, "The Cheetah Girls!"

Finn said, "Guys, we can't use any of those."

Tina asked, "Who do you think we should use?"

Finn said, "How about Hall and Oates?"

Claire blurted out, "Those two?"

Finn said, "Yeah. They're awesome for staying together over the long haul."

Rachel said, "Just like us, despite all their differences." She and Claire held hands for a brief moment.

Finn said, "I think we should give the solo to the new guy. Rory, I think you'll do a fine job."

Rory said, "Thanks, Finn. But I don't think I'm ready for that honor just yet."

Blaine said, "We'll all help you, Rory."

Shelby said, "I think we should let one of the teachers take over. Just to get the feel of it. Mr. Rivers, why don't you do the honors?"

Ian said, "Me? I don't know if I'm ready for that yet."

Anne Marie said, "Oh, come on, Ian. You're totally ready. You'll kill it."

Rachel said, "Mr. Shue, with all due respect, wouldn't it be fair to also give Miss Tompkins a shot?"

Will said, "I don't see why not. How about it, Anne Marie? You interested?"

Finn and Blaine smiled. Artie nodded. Anne Marie said, "Well, if you insist."

Will said, "All right." Applause was met. Shelby sighed.

Claire said, "Great idea, Rachel."

Rachel said, "It was? Nobody ever agrees with me." Shelby smiled at her.

In Jack's classroom, Shelby walked in the doorway and knocked.

"Hi."

"Hey. I wanted to give you your birthday present last week, but neither of us were here. So, if it's not too late, I'd like to give you your present now."

Jack chuckled, "You really didn't have to give me anything."

"I know," she walked in, "but I want to." She gives him a paper bag. "I was going to wrap it, but I couldn't find any paper that matched. So I figured I'd save time."

Jack opened the bag and pulled out a black leather pocket folder.

Shelby said, "It was the latest I could find. Since everyone else has one, I thought you should, too. Maybe I may even recommend you for teacher of the year. You're a terrific guy, Jack. I love…your passion and integrity. I just wanted you to have some recognition." She was blushing and burning again, her heart racing once more.

"Thank you, Shelby. This is really nice of you."

"It seemed like the least I could do." They hugged.

"God, it's hot in here."

Shelby said, "Yes, I guess it is, heh. Jack, why don't you come over to my apartment tomorrow night? You know, maybe we could brainstorm ideas for mash-ups."

"Sure. Sounds great."

Shelby smiled.

In the hallway, Rachel and Anne Marie were walking together.

Anne Marie said, "Thanks, Rachel. Almost nobody here gives me the time of day. Finn and Artie might, but not Santana. I don't think your sister likes me very much."

"Don't let her get to you. You're every bit as talented as we are. She may act all tough on the outside, but she's harmless."

Rory said, "I have your back. Like when that girl with the lips said you look like a whale, I wanted to tell her that I think you look fine."

Finn said, "Have you ever heard of the term trash-talk?"

In the gym, the guys and girls divided and tried to do a mash-up of "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" and "One Way or Another."

Rachel walked to Jack, who carried a clipboard and wore a whistle around his neck. Rachel said, "This could be deadly."

Jack said, "Well, dodgeball is dangerous."

"I didn't get a chance to tell you. I'm planning on going to NYADA next year. I just need one more letter of recommendation. I wrote to Patti LuPone on her website. Is there any chance we could talk?"

"Aren't we already?"

"Shelby told me about what happened. I'm really sorry about your grandfather, Jack. But you should've told us. We could've helped you through it."

"You all have enough to deal with already. I didn't want to pile more on."

"I know. It's just that… I really… I really miss you, Jack. And I really want to know where you and I are at." Her heart was pounding.

"Rachel…you have a game to start. Okay, we'll talk some more later."

Finn blew his whistle. "Let's roadhouse!"

Santana said, "Oh, it's on, Pillsbury doughnut."

Rory said, "Excuse me, I've never heard of this game of dodging balls before. What are the rules?"

Puck told him, "Keep your head in the game and don't die."

Brittany punched her palm and turned on the radio. "Let's do this."

Anne Marie was strumming an electric guitar. Rory said, "Flawless."

Finn nodded, "Okay. Good game."

Rachel walked in the auditorium. Shelby was at the piano and said, "Hey, Rachel."

"Hi. As you might have heard, I'm applying to the New York Academy of Dramatic Arts."

"Oh, all the girls who beat me out in the auditions when I was in New York, they all graduated from there."

"Well, my grades are perfect, and I was the lead in the school musical, so I just need a killer letter of recommendation."

"Wait, you're asking me to write it?"

"Actually, I've already written it, so all you have to do is sign and the résumé is in there with the letter. I thought that, you know, your pedigree as a national champion show choir coach would just make some noise with the admissions committee."

"Makes sense." And she signed. "Okay." "Thanks. Bye." And she started to walk.

"I'm so proud of you." Rachel stopped. "You are truly a star, Rachel. And it's all still out there in front of you. I'm not going to be the first person who's going to be a little jealous of all the amazing things you have lying ahead. I'm just going to be the one who's also cheering you on."

Rachel nodded. "Maybe you could come to my Broadway debut."

"Ooh, don't try to stop me." They laughed.

Rachel put down a folder. "Maybe you could write your own version of the letter." Shelby smiled and opened the folder. "Such an impressive résumé. You have the musical and all the clubs." Rachel shrugged and Shelby continued, "I feel bad for all the others who don't have these big ticket items in their CVs. They don't have a chance in hell of getting into NYADA."

Finn and Rory high-five. Santana walked to them and said, "Hey, tubs."

Rory said, "Hey, listen here. You can't make fun of Finn anymore."

"I'm here to apologize," Santana fired. "Rachel's right. I haven't been fair to you. You're not fat. I should know. And then at some point, someone just woke you up. Have fun riding on Rachel's coattails for the rest of your life, although I would look out for her come holiday time if I were him because if I were her, I would stick a stent in one of the nipples and let the Finn blubber light the Hanukkah lamp for eight magical nights." She started to walk, but then stopped.

Finn said to Santana, "You know, I think I know why you're so good at tearing everybody else down. It's because you're constantly tearing yourself down because you can't admit that you're in love with Brittany. That must hurt not being able to tell everybody how you really feel. I'll see you at the mash-off." And Santana just stood there, stunned as hell.

In Will's living room, Burt was super pissed about Sue's latest ad. He said, "Put your thinking cap on."

Meanwhile, in Shelby's apartment, she and Jack were going over what songs to mash up for the clubs. "Okay, so we have our setlist. There's Hall and Oates, Adele, and whoever this Jason Munday guy is. So, that makes us…"

"Done."

"You really are a math whiz. I can't do big numbers without a calculator."

"Well, everybody knows their own way. Rachel is a lot like you, you know. Focused, serious, driven."

"So, what was your grandfather like?"

"He was always so happy. Willing to cheer me up whenever I was sad. Bright-eyed and always up for a game of cards. He had a pretty good poker face."

Shelby laughed.

"Go ahead and laugh."

"I'm sorry. I'm also sorry that I never met him. I'd think he'd be very proud of you."

"I think he would've really liked you."

"You know, Jack, I think that you'd make a pretty amazing dad yourself one day, too." Jack looked at her. "I mean, you're smart, you're caring, you're funny…and you and Rachel have a lot in common yourselves. Same sweet smiles, same incredible faces, same bright, shiny eyes…" She cleared her throat, "I'm just saying that you'd be good at it, is all." They chuckled.

Jack moved Shelby's hair behind her ear. They started leaning forward slowly.

"Uh…" he said. "I-I should probably get home."

Shelby started blushing again. "Uh, yeah. Yeah, it's getting pretty late, so, um…"

Jack stood up and cleared his throat. He put on his jacket and was about to leave for the door.

"Hey," Shelby stood up and stopped him, "I don't want to force you to do anything you don't want to do, but would you ever consider dancing again on stage? I think that Will got a real kick out of seeing you dance."

Jack raised an eyebrow and said, "You're not serious."

"Again," she said, "not forcing you, but would you do it just once?"

Jack said, "Would you consider doing it with me?"

Shelby smiled and said, "I'd love to."

Jack said, "Great. Uh…"

They hugged nervously. Jack said, "Good night, Shelby."

"Good night." And then Jack took off. Shelby sighed, feeling warm. The door closed. "Oh, man."

In the auditorium the next day, everyone was gathered around. Will clapped and said, "Welcome, everyone, to day one of the McKinley High mash-off! Now, here are some ground rules. There will be no heckling of any kind." Shelby walked on stage and took one look at Jack. She thought to herself, "You know, I never realized it before until now, but Jack Masterson just gets cuter and more handsome every day." She sighed. Jack walked to her. "Hey. Do you think this looks okay?"

"Fine," Shelby nodded. "God, you're sexy."

"What's that?"

"Nothing. Uh," She cleared her throat. "I was just saying that it's nice to see that you're so committed to this." They both blushed.

Will said, "It's gonna be fun, okay? All right, here we go. Finn will represent half of the New Directions. Claire will represent the other half. Rock-paper-scissors to see who will perform first." Brittany and Santana did a high-five. Finn rubbed his hands together. Claire lightly cracked her knuckles. Will called, "Let's get - it - going!" Claire won. Rachel shouted, "Yes! Yeah!" Will was surprised but impressed, "Okay, Claire, you're up first. Let's see what you all got. New Directions take the stage."

Rachel smiled and ran to Claire, "Kiss for the winner." She kissed her cheek and Claire winked at that.

Finn and the others were singing, "You Make My Dreams Come True" and "I Can't Go For That." He, Kurt and Rory were dressed up like Daryl Hall, whereas Artie, Puck, Mike and Blaine were all dressed up like John Oates. Rachel, Tina, and Quinn dressed up in skirts.

Anne Marie was singing flawlessly, but Shelby was glaring at her in annoyance. Rachel smiled while dancing closely with her and Claire. Brittany even said, "Wow. They're really good." Santana rolled her eyes. As soon as their performance was finished, applause came. Will shouted, "Yeah!" Rachel gave Claire two thumbs up. Claire smiled and shrugged. Anne Marie and Ian held hands and took a bow.

In the gym, Kurt, Brittany, Nelson and some other guy were all seated together for a debate. Beiste was standing behind them. Rachel saw Jack walk in. He was wearing something casual but fancy. Rachel smiled, her heart racing.

Kurt said, "Unbelievable."

Brittany asked, "What?"

"She's totally still into Jack."

"Who, Rachel? Yeah, I know. He's totally into Shelby. Anyone with eyes could see that."

"Well, apparently, so can Sue, unfortunately."

Shelby was sitting next to Sugar. Burt shook hands with Will.

"Burt, I thought you weren't gonna make it."

"Are you kidding? I wouldn't miss this."

Becky ran to Sue. Sue said, "Sexual assault. What's not to like about that?" Um, everything.

Kurt was saying how during the debate how he feels dodgeball should be banned from all schools because of how brutal and painful it can be. Brittany was talking about how much she hated tornadoes.

Rachel was at her locker. Jack walked by her and said, "Hey."

"Hey."

"I told you we would talk later and it's later. So, about what you said before…"

"I meant it. Every word. You're already so spectacular. Shelby says that you should be teacher of the year, and I'm inclined to agree. I mean, if not you, then maybe her. Making you teacher of the year would just make you top of the line. Like I already know you are." She hugged him.

"Oh, I love you, Rachel Berry."

"You don't know how long I've been waiting to hear you say that."

At Breadstix, Shelby was getting the food for Jack's grandfather's funeral. She asked the maitre'd, "Look, is there any chance you could wrap it all up to go? I really need to meet someone." She reached for her wallet and pulled out the cash. "Thanks. Keep the change." She picked up the bag and walked out.

There was a knock on Shelby's door. She opened it and Jack said, "Hey."

Shelby smiled, "Hey."

"I just thought I'd stop by for a bit."

"Well, I'm glad you did. Listen, uh, I got you your catering orders from Breadstix." She put up a brown paper bag. "I wasn't sure what type of food your family is into, so I decided to play it safe and keep it low calorie. But it should still taste good."

"These croutons are my dad's favorite."

Shelby smiled at that. "Well, then, um…I guess, uh, I guess… Do you think this food will still be fresh by the time you get back to LA for the services?"

"Actually, we already did the funeral. We were actually planning the other services here in Lima. It would mean the world to me if you and Rachel were there this time."

"We'll be there. So is it just gonna be you?"

"And my brother. And a few of our relatives."

"I hope Justin likes croutons." They chuckled.

"For what it's worth," he said, "if your parents had decided to keep Rachel, I think she still would've turned out pretty great." Shelby smiled again and kissed his cheek. "Um…I-I'll, I'll see you later."

Jack nodded and left. "Good night."

"Good night," Shelby closed her door, turned around, smiling and blushing. Jack touched his cheek where she had kissed him and smiled, walking away.

The next day, Brittany and Santana were walking in the hallway. Brittany said, "I think you need to stop making fun of Finn. You're being really harsh." For once, she's right. But Santana said, "Manatees have thick skin."

Becky ran to them. "Santana, Coach Sue needs you in her office right away."

Santana walked in, Will and Burt were also there.

Sue said, "Have a seat, Santana. I'm afraid we have some bad news, and I might be to blame."

Burt said, "Oh, you think?"

Sue said, "I said some stuff in my campaign, and I don't feel good about it."

Burt said, "Reggie 'The Sauce' Salazar on his latest campaign ad."

Sue said, "Turns out he has a niece who goes to this school and she overheard a conversation a few days ago between you and Finn Hudson."

Santana looked sad. "I can't believe this is happening."

Sue said, "I'm so sorry."

Santana stood up and started to run, "I haven't even told my parents yet!"

In the auditorium, Jack walked on stage and Shelby smiled at him. Will smiled at her. She looked at him and said, "What?"

"Nothing."

Mercedes, Brittany and Santana all sang "Rumor Has It" by Adele with a touch of "Judas" by Lady Gaga.

Finn whispered in Rachel's ear, "She's really great." Applause occurred. Santana jumped down and said, "What did you just tell her?" Finn replied, "I said I thought you were great."

Rachel said, "No, he literally just said that."

"Did you tell her, too?"

"Tell her what?" Ian asked, "What's going on here?"

Santana said, "Everyone's gonna know now."

Finn stated, "The whole school already knows, and they don't care." Kurt sat in silence.

Santana fired back, "Not just the school, you idiot. Everyone!"

Claire shouted, "Enough!" and she punched Santana and she went down.

Rachel exclaimed, "Aah! Oh, my God."

Claire panted and the school bell rang.

Figgins said, "I'm sorry, but since a student had lit firecrackers in his pants three years ago, we have a zero-tolerance no-violence policy."

Claire said, "Since when? Is that why you've suspended all those people for tossing Slushies in our faces for the past two years?"

"Slushies are not on the school board's approved list of suspend-worthy weapons."

Will spoke up, "Claire, we all saw what happened. You punched Santana in the face."

Claire said, "Oh, yeah? And how do we even know she even felt it?"

Figgins said, "I'm suspending you for two weeks. No argument."

Claire stated, "Sectionals are next week. If you suspend me now, I won't be able to beat the Cheerios' butts. Ms. Corcoran, I highly recommend you do something about this."

Will said, "I'm sorry, Claire. Sectionals are important, but you need to face the consequences of your actions."

Shelby said, "I hate to say it, but I agree."

Claire said, "Oh, please. You love to say it. Santana Lopez is fine."

Finn said, "She didn't punch her. I know it looked and sounded like she did, but she actually didn't. You know, what is it called in a movie or a play where you pretend to hit someone but you really don't?"

Shelby said, "Um, a stage hit."

"It was a stage hit. That's what it was."

Will asked, "What is your angle here, Finn?"

"The truth. If she didn't really hit her, you can't suspend her, right?"

"No," Figgins said, "I suppose not."

"Then that's what happened."

Finn and Claire were walking out of the office. Claire said, "I appreciate you sticking your neck out for me, Finn, but for the life of me, I can't figure out why."

"Well, I want Sectionals to be a fair fight, and that can't happen without you on our team."

"Well, it would actually be a fair fight with Santana off the team."

"I kind of feel bad for her. Look, we've been at it the past couple of years, but when people hide who they are, I feel like they hide something with it. That's why you act out, because you hurt inside. You may not feel like you're good at singing, but the truth is you are, and I think you're awesome."

"That's sweet, but if you think that in exchange for keeping me from getting suspended, I'm gonna come…"

"Back to glee. I have an idea for a lesson, but you need to be there."

"Did Mr. Shue and Ms. Corcoran already agree to this?"

"No, but it's up to you. Either come back to glee or enjoy your two-week vacation at Sectionals."

Jack walked to Rachel and Shelby.

Rachel smiled and said, "Jack, I didn't see you coming." Shelby turned around and smiled.

Jack said, "Just so you know, the polls are up and running and Kurt and Brittany are pretty much tied for first place."

Shelby said, "Wait, how is that possible?" Jack shrugged.

Rachel said, "Not to change the subject, but, Jack, don't you have any other neckties? Don't get me wrong. The black one is always a good look on you, but is that the only one you own?"

"I don't really have a lot of time to shop," he told her.

Shelby said, "It is a very good look for you." Jack straightened his tie and blushed. Shelby also blushed while putting her hair behind her ear.

Jack said, "I'll see you two in the choir room."

Rachel said, "What was that? What that power flirting?"

In the choir room, Finn was writing on the white board.

Mercedes said, "Can someone tell us what's going on, please?"

Finn announced, "This week, the New Directions will be singing music created by ladies and for ladies."

Santana declared, "Oh, hell no."

Finn continued, "Next week, all of us will be going to Sectionals, and one of us are gonna win. But, Santana, we're worried about you."

"Worry about yourself."

"Glee Club is about accepting yourself for who you are, no matter what people think. That's what this music is all about."

"So I don't even get a say in this?"

"Everybody in this room knows about you and Brittany. But we don't judge you for it. It's who you are. Not everybody outside this room is as accepting and cool, but we're doing this assignment this week so you know in this rotten, messed up world that you at least have a group of people who will support your choice to be whoever you want to be. That's it. That's what we're doing here."

Anne Marie said, "Kurt, Blaine, the floor is yours."

Blaine started, "Santana, Kurt and I have a song we like to sing in the car."

Kurt said, "I know it's hard. It was hard for me, too. But you can get through this."

Blaine said, "If you would just stop being so defensive."

Santana said, "I'm trying."

Will said, "Kurt, Blaine, why don't you, uh, kick us off with what you got?"They started to sing Pink's "Perfect." When they were done, the class applauded.

In the teacher's lounge, Shelby once again took one look at Jack and thought, "Wow. Jack looks really nice today." Jack poured some coffee and Shelby took a look at his…pants.

Emma noticed and said, "Oh, my God. Shelby was totally checking Jack out."

Beiste ate. Emma asked, "What is that animal you seem to be so noisily enjoying?"

"A chicken stuffed in a duck jammed in a turkey. A turducken. It's like a barnyard in a bite."

Emma said, "So I take it things are going well."

Will asked, "Why are you so tired?"

Beiste said, "I need to keep my strength up. I've been working hard as a student election adviser and my nights have been a lot, well, busier lately."

Will said, "Well, if you need our help."

Beiste said, "I could use your help running the election ballots."

Will said, "We are so happy for you, Coach."

Beiste nodded.

In the choir room, Claire was singing a rousing rendition of "Te Amo" by Rihanna. She was dancing with Anne Marie. Quinn was intrigued. Claire put her finger under Rachel's chin in a loving way and Shelby smiled at that. Everyone was moving to the beat. Anne Marie was flawless, but Shelby was somewhat annoyed with it. Will was impressed with their performing. Kurt and Blaine also loved it. Even Santana seemed to be enjoying herself. Clapping ensued. Ian was tapping Anne Marie strummed a guitar and she sat on the piano. Artie loved it. Applause.

Shelby was on the phone with an angry business man. She said, "What? No! How can you possibly be sold out? This watch is a one-of-a-kind. No, you don't understand. I need this watch by Christmas. I'll pay for it with my credit card. Do you have any idea who you're talking to? My name is Shelby Corcoran." There was a dial tone. "Hello?" She pounded her cell phone on her desk. Rachel walked in and said, "I think they still would've hung up if you used my name."

Shelby smirked. "How much of that did you hear?"

Rachel said, "Enough. What was that all about, anyway?"

Shelby sighed. Rachel went on, "Or is that none of my business?"

Shelby turned her laptop and Rachel saw a picture of a black watch with a diamond circle. Rachel exclaimed, "Wow. That watch looks more expensive than the car you drive. Why are you trying to buy this?"

"That's the thing," Shelby said. "I'm not getting it for me. I want to get it for Jack."

"Shelby, that is amazing." She hugged her, and Shelby smiled.

"That watch was very special to his grandfather. But it's worth a fortune, and I don't know if I'll ever be able to afford it, but…"

"You're doing this for him so that he can have a keepsake for his granddad. That is really romantic."

Finn asked Santana, "What do you think of the assignment?"

Santana closed her locker, "Do you realize you're basically forcing me? Why are you so worked up about this?"

"Because I don't want you to die. A few weeks ago, some kid who made one of those 'it gets better' videos killed himself."

"I'd miss me too much."

"Look, if anything were to happen to you and I didn't do everything I could to stop it, I'd never be able to live with myself."

In the choir room, Finn and Jack were singing for Santana. Jack sat in front of her and smiled at Rachel, who smiled at him. Santana started to tear up. Jack stood and Santana stopped him. "Thank you." She hugged him.

"You're welcome, Santana."

Shelby saw Jack in the hallway. "Oh, God, there he is." She looked in a reflection of a window and fixed her hair. She took a breath and walked toward him. Jack, on the other hand, put breath spray in his mouth in a huff. He exhaled and walked towards her. "Hi," he said.

"Hey," she said. "So, uh, that was, um, quite a performance."

"Yeah, I've never seen Santana so teared up before. I never thought she would hug me." They chuckled.

"Jack, um, I was wondering, uh…do you want to, maybe…I don't know, heh. Do you maybe want to get a drink sometime? Just the two of us."

"Really? I mean, uh, sure, yeah."

"Great," Shelby was beaming. "So, uh, tomorrow night, my place?"

"Yes."

Rachel smiled and made a fist with her hand in triumph.

In the gym the day after, everyone was ready to vote. Many students voted for Kurt. Santana voted for Brittany. No surprise there.

Will said, "Shelby, would you mind helping us count the ballots after voting is over?"

Shelby said, "Actually, I can't. Uh, I have a date tonight."

Emma smiled, "Really?" she said. "Who with? Is it someone we know?"

"You could say that." She walked away. Will smiled and pursed his lips.

Beiste said, "I think I have a pretty good idea who it is."

Will said, "Us too."

Rachel and Shelby were hard for Jack. Rachel was really happy for Shelby, but on the other hand, she still had feelings for Jack. Still conflicted by her feelings for him and Finn, she knew she wanted to be with Finn, but could't help but still feel something for Jack.

All the girls were all singing "Man, I Feel Like a Woman" by Shania Twain in the choir room. Claire took off her glasses in the middle of the performance. Everyone applauded and Quinn hugged Santana, who in turn announced, "Okay, update, y'all. I told my parents last night and they were actually okay with it." Applause. "I still have to tell my abuela."

The time came for Santana to come out to her grandmother. But when she told her, she did not take the news well. She asked her if it would've been better if she kept it a secret. Even if she had, she would've found out on her own eventually, anyway, and he bitch still would've resented her.

In Rachel's room, she and Kurt were discussing something important.

Kurt said, "So, looks like Brittany and I are still tied. Are you okay?"

"Yeah."

"Rachel Berry, what's on your mind?"

"Shelby and Jack really like each other. She asked him out."

"Really? So she has no idea that you two dated?"

"Wait, you know about that?"

"Come on, Rachel, it was so obvious. You seemed really happy with him."

"On the one hand, I'm happy for Shelby. But on the other hand… I can't do that to Finn. If I tell Jack how I feel, I risk hurting Shelby and Finn."

"Rachel, I get it. You don't just get over someone like Jack over night. You've been crushing hard on him ever since you saw him."

"Well, this isn't about me. What's up with you?"

"I might win, but by a long shot."

In Shelby's apartment, she was rummaging in her closest trying to find the appropriate outfit. Of course, she wore a black dress. She put her hair behind her ears. Her heart was racing.

There was a knock on her door. "Oh, man." She went to the door, took a breath and then opened it. Jack was standing there wearing a suit.

"Hi," he said.

"Hi. Am I underdressed?"

"You look perfect."

They were having dinner. "So, do you think your brother's gone stir-crazy at the hospital yet?"

"Justin looked up to our grandad. It hit him more than the others."

"So, you want to watch a movie after this?"

"I don't think there are a lot of good movies this year."

"What are you talking about? The Deathly Hallows finale was top of the charts. The First Avenger was pretty cool, too. Not that I'm really into comics, but still."

"Actually, I was kind of hoping we could celebrate Burt Hummel winning the campaign against Sue."

Shelby thought to herself, "Come on, you're a grown woman. Just tell him." She took a breath and walked to sit down next to him. "Jack, um, there's something I have to tell you. These last few weeks…you've been doing a really great job."

"You really think so?"

"I do. Really."

"Well, I had a lot of fun." "Me too. But what I really want to say is…I…" They were leaning forward slowly and Jack's phone rang.

"You should get it. It could be important."

He answered it and stood up. "Hey, bro. I'll be right there. I'm sorry, I have to go."

"Is everything okay?"

"Yeah, everything's fine. Justin just wants to talk to me about business."

"Is this about that job you took over the summer?"

"I might be getting a promotion."

"That's great!"

"Not a lot of people have faith in me, but it means everything that you and Rachel do."

"You're my best friend, Jack. You deserve the best."

They hugged. Shelby was thinking to herself, "I feel really safe when I'm with you." Jack was thinking to himself, "I never want to be without you." Then he said out loud, "Good night, Shelby." He walked. Shelby said, "Good night, Jack."

Jack was sitting in the auditorium depressed. Rachel found him and walked down the stairs to sit next to him. "Jack!" He sighed. "Are you okay?"

"No. Heh, no, Rachel, I'm not okay. I just got promotion in LA."

"Really? Wow, Jack, that's great."

"No, it means I'll be away from you."

"There's still time. You can still make the most of it. You've been so patient with Shelby. You've really gotten to know her. You swept her off her feet. I'd say you're in."

"The game is over, Rachel. Look, I really appreciate everything that you've done for me. But it's plain to see that…she's a music lover and I'm a money saver."

"Jack, you are so much more than a mathematician. You can sing, you can dance, you can play guitar. You're more talented than you know. I know I'm selfish, but this time I want to be. Please tell me you'll stay."

Jack kissed her cheek. "Call me when I get back to California, all right?" He stood up and walked. Rachel started trembling and she covered her face, beginning to sob softly.

In the choir room, Will announced, "Okay, guys. Shelby and I just wanted to say that you really inspired us.

Shelby said, "When you perform at Sectionals, it will be with more empathy and a deeper understanding of each other."

Will said, "That's right." Applause.

Artie asked, "Where's Rachel? She never misses applause."

Finn answered, "She's dealing with stuff."

Will said, "Anne Marie, will you bring us home?" There were scattered claps. Will and Anne did a high-five. She picked up a guitar and said, "So, I picked a song that gives me strength and gets me through. The struggle continues, but now that Santana's out, she knows she's not alone." Santana smiled and Anne started strumming her guitar. Then she started to sing "Constant Craving." Shelby glared at her. Claire was singing the same song. She was walking down the hallway. Kurt was getting ready to fill in his application for NYADA. Jack was packing his bag and getting ready to leave. Rachel was walking with a tear rolling down her left cheek. Applause was met after the song ended and Claire walked to Anne Marie. They hugged.

Shelby walked to Jack's classroom.

"You're leaving?"

"Rachel told you."

"She didn't have to tell me anything. So, that's it? After everything, you're not coming back?"

"I just think I'm shouldering too much responsibility."

"You were gonna leave without saying goodbye."

"No. I would never… I would never leave without saying goodbye to you."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I didn't want to. It hurt too much. Look, this is a big opportunity for me. They heard about everything I was doing here and they were impressed with me. I was just afraid that if you knew, you'd… But I really wouldn't leave without goodbye. I'm sorry."

Shelby sighed, "I don't want you to go. But if this is what you want, then I can't stop you. You earned this. And I'm happy for you." She hugged him and he hugged her back.

"Uh…Shelby…"

Shelby kissed his cheek. "Goodbye, Jack. Wherever you end up, they'll be lucky to have you."

Jack picked up his bag. "You deserve to be happy, too." He then walked out. Shelby was covering her mouth, trying to keep herself from crying.

In the choir room, Finn said, "Sectionals are in our auditorium for the first time since 1963."

Will said, "We need to sing something upbeat."

"Mr. Shue, we need star power. We need Victoria Sanchez."

"Tori transferred. No one knows where that woman is."

"She lives somewhere in Cleveland. Even foreign people have Facebook."

Claire and Anne Marie were seated together at the Lima Bean.

Claire sighed, "If we don't win at Sectionals, I pretty much have nothing to live for."

"New Directions are a mess," Anne Marie pouted. "We could lose, Claire, and I can't do anything about it. Every time I open my mouth, Shelby gives me these looks like, 'Does she even know what she's doing?' I know what I'm doing."

Sebastian came by and sat down. "Maybe she's just jealous. You were ranting."

"What would Shelby Corcoran ever have a reason to be jealous of me?"

Claire asked, "What do you want, Sebastian?"

Smythe answered, "Hey, I'm just trying to have a friendly conversation."

"Yeah, well, your definition of 'friendly' must be different than ours."

Anne Marie said, "Oh, uh, congrats on the Warbler win at your Sectionals. We're up this week."

Smythe said, "Well, if anyone can whip the New Directions into style, it's Blaine Anderson. I gotta run. Take care."

Rachel went to Shelby's apartment. "Shelby? Shelby." She walked to the bedroom. Shelby was in her bed, depressed and heartbroken. "Have you ever gotten out of bed today?"

"What's the point, Rachel? Everything hurts. I just lost my best friend."

"You haven't lost him. He's just going away on a business trip."

"You don't know that."

"I know him. Jack has fierce loyalty. He's not gonna abandon us. Maybe he'll come back."

Shelby wiped her tears and sniffled. "I never should've let him go."

"You let him go because you care so much about him. You were only thinking of him. I know you miss him. I miss him, too. Come on, we have Sectionals to prepare for. Do you need me to get you some coffee?"

Anne Marie and Ian walked into a bar. The found Tori dancing for men.

Anne Marie said, "Holy crap."

Ian said, "Table for two, please."

Tori said, "Ian?" In the back room, she said, "What else was I supposed to do? After Holly left, I ran out of options. I needed to do something to get the old juices flowing."

Anne said, "Tori, we need you to come back for Sectionals."

"But I'm not a student."

"We just need you for some advice and emotional support."

Will said, "Sectionals are gonna be a challenge."

Kurt said, "Mr. Shue, all the sparkling cider in the world will not change the fact that the Titanic has hit the iceberg and now we're on a sinking ship."

Tori walked in and said, "Not if I can help it."

Finn said, "Aw, let's hear it for Tori Sanchez!"

Tori said, "It's time to get a little acoustic back in this joint. Oh!" Then she started strumming a guitar. She was singing China Anne McClain's version of Taio Cruz's "Dynamite."

Claire said, "Red Solo Cup, you are not just a cup."

Anne Marie said, "Hell no."

"You're my…"

"Friend?"

"You're my friend. Thank you for being my friend, Red Solo Cup."

The next day, the girls were practicing their dancing.

Anne Marie said, "Let's take what's most appealing as a group."

Claire said, "Yeah, how about something like, um…?" She spun. "Like that."

Rachel said, "Cute."

"Give it a spin and we begin."

Tori said, "Okay, God, stop. Claire, this is totally overdone. What we need to sell is sex."

"What is that?"

"That's a, it's a pelvic thrust."

"Yeah. Tori, that might be what we need."

Anne Marie said, "No. That's not what we need. It's cheap. It's selling out."

Tori said, "Look, I came back here so that you guys could win. You need to use your assets to get that advantage. This is the advantage."

"Of course that's what you think. You have to think that in order to sleep at night."

"What the hell does that mean?"

"It means that unlike you, I'm not for sale."

They push each other. The others stopped them.

Anne Marie walked out. "Forget it." Claire sighed.

Anne Marie started punching a bag in the gym. Shelby walked in. "That Sue's face?"

"Yep. Yours too. Don't act so surprised. After getting picked on so much, I took up boxing. I also started my own fight club, which I obviously can't talk about. What is your problem with me anyway?! Ever since I got here, you have given me nothing but crap!"

"Honestly, I was kind of jealous." Anne Marie scoffed. Shelby went on, "I felt threatened. Your sweetness and talent freaked me out. Made me question whether I was a good coach. Look, Anne Marie, I'm really sorry. I shouldn't be taking anything out on you. Now more than ever, we need to be on the same page, united."

Anne Marie nodded, "Tell me what you need me to do."

"We have an opportunity. To be remembered at this school for doing the impossible. And it all starts right here with us. I just want to be able to look across that stage at you and know that we did everything that we could. No holding back."

Anne Marie sighed, "Let's get to work."

Shelby chuckled, "All right." They bump fists. Anne Marie smiled.

Sectionals were being held in the auditorium. Blaine said, "You want to sing from your diaphragm as much as possible."

Finn said, "Oh, and if you forget the words, uh, just keep your lips moving. Hopefully nobody will notice."

Tina said, "Break a leg out there. What?"

Mike glared, "Why would you try and talk to my dad? He almost didn't let me come tonight."

Claire tied her bowtie. "Finger's caught."

Shelby giggled. "May I?" She helped her with it.

"Aren't these things supposed to come with clips?"

"Not if you're older than 12. There."

"Thanks."

"You're welcome. See you on the ice, Claire."

Finn walked to Rachel. "Hey. Why aren't you wearing your suit?"

"I miss Jack too much. I really wish he were here right now."

"Sad?"

"Devastated."

Finn nodded. "Come on." They hold hands and walk together.

The announcer called, "And now, the judges for this year's Sectionals. DMV employee of the month, Brandy Englebert! From the 11th District Court, Honorable Judge Dorothy Saunders. And Tickles the Clown!" Applause and cheers. "And now, from Defiance, Ohio, the Unitards!" Harmony was singing "Buenos Aires."

Kurt said, "Oh, my God, it's the Gerber baby."

Rachel said, "This is criminal. I should be singing that song."

Applause and cheering.

Emma said, "Wow."

Will said, "Ah, didn't count on that one."

Rachel was in the hallway. She pulled out her cell phone and speed-dialed Jack. "Hey, Jack, it's Rachel. You said to call you when you reach California. You're there, right? Anyway, I just thought I'd let you know Sectionals are happening right now. I really miss you. I know what you said, and I know I said, but if you could just… I really want you to come back. After Sectionals are over, I won't stop you from living your dream. Okay, that's all I wanted to say, so…I guess…goodbye." She sighed and hung up.

A familiar voice said, "How's your show goin'"?

Rachel turned around and Jack chuckled. "Oh, my God." She ran to him and hugged him. "Is this really happening? Is all this a dream?"

Jack kissed her cheek.

"If this is a dream, I don't ever want to wake up."

Jack chuckled.

"But…I thought you were…"

"I couldn't get on that plane. Like I was gonna miss my favorite singer in the world perform."

"I'm really glad you're here. I guess I'd better change. I have to get on that stage." She ran off, happy as hell.

Shelby looked at her cell phone. "I should've told you when I had the chance." She sighed heavily.

Jack showed up at the doorway. "Hey, cutie." Shelby turned and Jack went on, "You know, I was afraid I wasn't gonna get the chance to tell you how beautiful you look tonight."

"Jack…" They walked to each other and Shelby jumped on him, they were hugging. Jack spun around.

"Wait, shouldn't you be in LA right now?"

"I didn't get on."

"I didn't think you were gonna show up."

"Well, I figured I had to finish what I started."

"That's great." She wiped a tear and cleared her throat.

"Shelby…" "Jack…" They chuckled. They hugged again and when they looked at each other again, they leaned forward again, but it was interrupted when someone knocked.

Will said, "Hey, sorry, guys. Five minutes."

Jack said, "Well, I guess there's nothing left to say. Except…break a leg." Shelby kissed his other cheek, then said, "Has anybody ever told you that…you're really handsome?"

"It's come up."

Shelby chuckled. "You're a really good teacher, Jack. I've never met anyone with so much passion before. I like you, Jack. I really like you."

"Really? You do? I really like you, too."

Shelby chuckled and hugged him again. She sighed, "All right. We'd better get on that stage."

"And now, from Cleveland, Ohio, the Dulcet Dazzlers!"

Claire said, "We got this, right?"

Anne Marie said, "Yeah, we do." They bump fists.

"And now, from McKinley High, the New Directions!" Rachel and Claire started performing "Stir It Up" by Patti LaBelle and Joss Stone. Everyone was thrilled. Even Shelby and Jack were watching and they were impressed. Then they started singing "Friday Night" by Todd Carey and "Finally Falling" from "Victorious." (What a waste of a TV series.) The audience stood up, clapped and cheered. Will and Emma stood up as well. Shelby held Jack's hand. He looked down and their fingers intertwined. Everyone was clapping and cheering. Anne Marie and Tori shook hands. Finn and Blaine did the same. Quinn hugged Puck.

The New Directions were cheering over their victory. Tina and Quinn waltzed in together. Quinn said, "Come here," and hugged Rory.

Shelby and Anne Marie shook hands. Anne said, "We gave it our best shot."

"Yeah, we did." They hugged. Claire hugged Rachel from behind. "Congratulations, R&B," she told her.

"You too." They hugged.

Mike picked up Tina and grunted happily. She chuckled. He said, "I can't believe it. He actually came! He stood and…"

Mike's father stood in, "Michael. May I speak with you?" Outside he said, "Dancing is your talent and your dream. If this is your path, son, your mother and I will help you follow it however we can. Apply to the best dance schools."

"Dad," Mike hugged him. "I think I missed the deadlines."

"No, you didn't," Tina said. "I filled in your applications just in case. I did have to forge your signature, though."

"I love you so much." They hugged. She chuckled.

Tickles walked up to the mic and said, "As an award-winning clown, I'd like to say it's nice to see so many kids with talent. In third place, the Unitards!"

Applause and cheers.

Kurt said, "Harmony, I just wanted to tell you that you were really amazing."

Harmony said, "And just think I'm only a sophomore and I'm already this good. Next year's gonna be a bloodbath." Kurt looked at unease.

The clown announced, "In second place, the Dulcet Dazzlers! In first place, the New Directions!"

"What?!" Claire shouted. Shelby shouted, "Yes!" She and Jack hugged. Anne Marie and Ian leaned forward and hugged themselves. Rachel and Claire hugged, too. Tina and Quinn hoisted Claire on their shoulders. "Whoa!" she exclaimed. Will mouthed, "For you." Emma clapped.

Shelby found Jack in his classroom packing up and getting ready to leave.

"Looks like I'm going to be missing their victory party. I just wanted to see how you were doing. I really missed you."

"I really missed you, too."

"I'm going to enjoy my last few minutes as a teacher."

"Wait, what? You resigned, too? When?"

"Pretty much after you did. After you left, I didn't feel like I had a purpose here anymore."

"Well, we can't go back to Figgins now. After I turned down the promotion, the administrator told me that if I didn't come back, I can't have the job at all. But it was almost worth it to see you one last time."

Shelby put her hands on his shoulders and kissed him.

Jack was surprised, but then he closed his eyes. Shelby put her hand on his cheek. Jack ran his hand down her arm. "Wow," he said. "You really know what you're doing."

Shelby chuckled, "For the first time in my life, I have no idea what I'm doing. Jack, I want you to come to New York with me."

Jack was stunned by this. "You're not serious."

"I've never been more serious about anything. You bring out the best in me, Jack, and I can't go another minute, another second without you." She put her arms around him and then kissed him again. Jack hugged her. Shelby moaned.

"YES!"

Shelby and Jack stopped to look. Rachel was standing in the doorway. "Oh, God. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." They smiled. "I'm gonna leave you two alone now." She ran off excitedly. "Yes!"

Jack chuckled, "I think she approves." "Really? What gave you that idea?"

They kissed again.

The next day Rachel said, "I'm just hoping that the admissions board at NYADA see it as my artistic, rebellious attitude."

Claire said, "Good luck with that." She stood up.

"Claire, I really gotta say thanks. If it weren't for your radical song selections, we would've wound up at the bottom of Sectionals this year."

"It was a team effort, but I'll take the credit."

Rachel nodded, "We're kind of like sisters now, aren't we?"

"Heh. Yep." Claire sat down again. "What do you think about community college?"

"Oh, no, I have my sights set on NYADA."

"No, I know. I meant for me. They have a drama department and I really like to perform. I mean, I'm not the singer that you and Kurt are, but…it's something that I've always really wanted to do."

"Yeah, of course, that's perfect for you. Especially since you won't have me to compete with. You're a lot better than you know."

They stood up again. Claire said, "Well, I'll see you."

"Well, if you need help with your Yale application in two years…"

Claire nodded and they left. Rachel closed the door.

Shelby walked in. "That girl's got a real future."

"She's stronger than she knows." She smiled. "So…"

"So what?"

"Shelby's got herself a boyfriend."

Shelby laughed and blushed.

"Does he make you happy?"

"More than words can express." She sighed. "Rachel…I felt like I was floating."

"Almost like you were...defying gravity?"

"Well, hey, let's not get carried away here." They laughed.

"Well, I'm happy for you."

They walk out.

An extremely happy Jack ran to Rachel, picked her up and hugged her. "Rachel!"

"Aah!" She chuckled. "Oh, Jack."

"You didn't think I was gonna leave without saying goodbye to you, did you?"

"Never even crossed my mind."

"I can never thank you enough for what you did for me."

"Come to my Broadway debut and we'll call it even."

"It's a deal."

Rachel chuckled and he kissed her cheek.

Shelby walked in, "Hey. Clean thoughts, babe. That's my sister you're kissing."

Rachel said, "Take good care of her, Jack."

Jack said, "I will." He walks and says to Shelby, "I'll wait for you in the car." He kisses her cheek and heads out.

"Wow, he must really like you."

Shelby chuckled, then reached into her pocket and pulled out a black case. "This is for you." Rachel took it and opened it. "Shelby, I can't take this."

"It's yours now. It's a family heirloom. I want you to have it."

They hugged. Rachel said, "I'm gonna miss you like crazy."

Shelby said, "I'm gonna miss you, too." She kissed her head.

"Bye, Shelby." She walked.

"Bye, Rachel." As soon as Rachel walked away, Shelby said, "Thank you."

Mercedes said, "We were better."

Brittany said, "I don't know."

Santana said, "It was that damn Tori Sanchez."

Quinn talked to them, convinced them to come back. They did.

In the auditorium, they all started singing Cher's "Love is the Groove."

In the choir room, they were decorating the Christmas tree while Mercedes was singing "All I Want For Christmas is You." Rachel said, "Best Christmas ever!"

Rachel looked at a postcard with a great big smile on her face.

Finn walked up to her, "Hey, what's that you've got there?"

"It's a postcard from Shelby. She and Jack are spending Christmas together in New York." She gives it to him.

Finn smiled, "They look so happy in this picture together. I'm really happy for your sister. And Jack is a very lucky guy."

"Here's my Christmas list."

"Spray tan? Teeth whitening?"

"I'm just trying to make it easier for you."

In the choir room the next day, Rory was singing "Blue Christmas."

"My mum couldn't make it for Christmas this year, plane tickets are expensive. So I'd like to dedicate this song to my family and to the King."

Kurt said, "Jesus?"

Claire said, "No! Kurt, he's obviously talking about Elvis." Tina and Quinn nodded.

Santana said, "God, that song was so depressing."

Rachel said, "Uh, I think what Santana means is even though that song was mournfully beautiful, now that the whole club is back together, I think we should focus on the more joyous moments."

Tina said, "Rachel's right. Last year, Kurt was at another school, Sue destroyed our tree, and Artie got a pair of robot legs that broke the next day."

Will said, "This year is a whole new sprig of mistletoe. Don Borowski saw us at Sectionals. He loved what we did."

Rachel said, "And we're starring in a new Christmas special. Please tell me you said yes."

"Not only did I say yes, but when Don said they were looking for a director, I nominated you, Artie."

Artie said again, "Me?"

"He loved what you did wish West Side Story."

"I have to think about this."

In the hallway, Rory dropped his books from his locker. Claire helped pick them up. "Thank you. You're very kind."

"Is that your family?"

"The whole Flanagan clan."

"It's hard being away from them, isn't it?"

"It's so hard. More than I can ever imagine."

"I know what you mean. I miss my boyfriend every day. What are you doing for Christmas this year?"

"I don't really know."

"Well, why don't you spend Christmas with us? I'll even be your Christmas sponsor."

"That'd be so awesome, Claire. Thank you."

Artie made a deal with Don Borowski. He said that the Star Wars Holiday Special was the best, although it did not get any positive reception whatsoever. However, it did introduce the franchise to Boba Fett.

In the auditorium, Rachel and Anne Marie were singing "Nargles in the Mistletoe" by the Moaning Myrtles. Anne was playing the piano while Ian played the harmonica. Artie clapped slowly. He was content but unimpressed. "Rachel, this doesn't exactly fit my vision."

"And what is that, exactly?"

"We begin in the Swiss Alps. Kurt and Blaine, the perfect hosts, have invited their guests to drop in. The evening's festivities conclude with Rory dressed as Itchy the Christmas Elf. Start with fun, end with fun. That's how you do it, kids."

Finn said, "Sorry about what Artie said about that song."

Rachel said, "It was a really great song."

"I got you this."

"A certificate? For what?"

"I got you an African sow pig."

"An African sow pig? You got me a sow pig for Christmas? Look, it's really sweet that you gave me him."

"I think it's actually a her."

"Well, whatever gender it is, I appreciate it. But all I want is my fair share. All I want is what's coming to me." Now why does that sound familiar?

Rachel and Blaine started singing "Extraordinary Merry Christmas" in the choir room. Artie said, "I bow to you. Gold. Gold!"

Sue walked in and told everyone to serve at the homeless shelter.

The TV special had officially begun.

Kurt and Blaine were singing a rousing rendition of "I Solemnly Swear That I'm Up to Good Cheer," a song by the Remus Lupins from Jingle Spells 2.

Applause. Kurt said, "Hello. I'm Kurt Hummel, I'll be one of your hosts this evening." Applause. "Thank you. And, um, this is my close friend and holiday roommate, Blaine Anderson."

"How do you do? Welcome to our bachelor chalet."

"We've also asked some of our friends to stop by. I just hope they can make it. Oh, but where are my manners? Please come in, have a seat, away from the cold."

The doorbell rang. "Who could that be?"

Blaine said, "Come on in."

Rachel said, "Sorry we're late. Hope there's still eggnog. Oh, Kurt, how are you? I love what you've done with the place."

"Everyone, these are our very good friends, Rachel Berry and Mercedes Jones." Applause.

"Us too? Hello."

Mercedes said, "This is for you, Kurt."

"For me? May I open it?"

"Oh, I wish you would."

Kurt got an Elizabeth Taylor necklace.

"Thank you so much. Truly a Christmas miracle."

"Blaine," Rachel said, "this is for you."

"Oh, why, thank you, Rachel."

"It's a bowtie with little Christmas trees on it."

"Oh, would you look at that."

Kurt said, "This is truly an ideal evening."

Blaine said, "Rachel, Mercedes?"

"We're not prepared. But, well, we have been working on a little something. I'm in if you are."

Mercedes said, "Well, it is Christmas after all."

Rachel and Mercedes were singing "Draco's Christmas Wish" by RiddleTM.

Applause. Mercedes asked, "Say, when's dinner?"

Kurt said, "Oh, no. I forgot to turn on the oven."

They all said, "Kurt!" Laughter.

Blaine said, "We'll be right back after these messages."

Blaine said, "Ooh, guys, that snow is really piling up out there."

Kurt said, "Climate change is no laughing matter."

Jingle bells sounded.

Mercedes asked, "Wait, do you hear that?"

Finn and Puck came in with Claire, dressed as the Star Wars trio. Applause. Rachel hugged the guys and kissed Claire. "Oh, ladies and gentlemen, Finn Hudson, Noah Puckerman and Claire Thomas." Finn and Puck waved. Claire bowed.

Blaine asked, "Hey, are you all dressed as Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo?"

Finn said, "Technically, that would be copyright infringement." He pulled out a blue lightsaber. "Any reference to a Star Wars character is strictly confidential." Claire took off her Leia bun earmuffs.

Puck asked, "Why the long faces? It's Christmas Eve."

Rachel said, "Santa might not come this year."

Finn said, "Well, that's not what we heard."

Claire said, "To us, he's always there."

Mercedes asked, "Really?"

Then Finn and Puck sang "Christmastime at School" by Gred and Forge. Applause. The doorbell then ran again.

Kurt said, "Oh, my stars. More guests?"

Claire said, "Who could that be this time?"

"I hope it's carolers."

The door opened. Mike came dancing in with Santa's sack. Tina and the Cheerios were swinging ribbons.

Brittany and Santana, of course, sang "Santa, Don't Judge Me" by the Parselmouths.

Applause. Kurt said, "All my wishes came true this year."

Blaine said, "All except for one." A bell was ringing.

Rachel gasped, "Oh, my goodness, could it be?"

Rory appeared as Itchy the elf and read the Christmas pasture, exactly word for word as Linus said it in A Charlie Brown Christmas.

Claire announced, "Well, that's our show. I hope you all had a wonderful time. I for one have had a blast. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night."

Rory read, "Have yourself a Ministry-approved Christmas. Yours respectfully, Percy Weasley."

They were all at the homeless shelter. The janitor was playing Jingle Bells on the piano.

Artie said, "We brought the turkey."

Will said, "It's a prop, but it's real."

Finn said, "Let's just say Rory helped us all see the light."

Claire was attempting to perform "Christmas at the Leaky With You" by the Justin Finch-Fletchley and the Sugar Quills. Sue actually smiled at them.

On the last day before holiday break, Rachel walked to Finn and said, "Just the guy I was looking for."

"Hey."

"I want you to know I named my pig."

"The African sow pig?"

"Yep." She opened her locker. "Her name is Barbra."

"Of course it is."

"Look, I love you, I love my pig, and that's all that matters to me."

"Well, I'm glad you like pig-Barbra, but I got you something else."

"Okay."

Finn gave her another certificate. "I got you your own star."

"I love this. But I think it's time that I start giving back. Come on."

That night, Claire was ringing bells with Rory.

Rory said, "These bells make me homesick."

Claire asked, "Church bells?"

"No," he smiled. "My brother Shamus would always get lost, so my dad put a bell around his neck."

"Clever. Merry Christmas."

"Claire, I was wondering if maybe you would be my sponsor for Valentine's Day as well. I mean, you did such a good job as my Christmas sponsor. Can you help me land a song or two by February?"

"I can try. But I can't make any promises or guarantees, though."

Finn threw a snowball at her. "Hey!" she shouted.

Rachel said, "So how's business, guys?"

Claire said, "A little slow."

Finn said, "Well, just in case, we'd like to make our own contribution to the cause. We finally realized what really matters."

Rachel said, "Yeah. I already got my present. We decided we wanted to do something special this year."

Rory said, "We got a couple extra bells if you want to join in."

Rachel said, "We'd love to. Also, Claire, we have a big surprise for you."

Henry said, "Room for one more?"

Claire smiled, "Henry?! Hey!" They hugged. They were all ringing bells. "You were right, Rachel. Best Christmas ever."

Finn said, "Merry Christmas."

Rachel said, "Happy Hanukkah."
