"Xander, before you start searching for Willow there's something I need to let you know." Giles told him.
"What?"
"Willow has been reading the books in the Argeneau series and she's discovered something disturbing, you're nearly as vulnerable to fire as a real vampire. The characters in the books speculate that it's because of the nanites, but they're unsure how. Willow's belief is that being machines, microscopic or not, there's byproducts involved with them. Either in their personal manufacturing process as they make new versions of themselves or the individual nanites excrete something themselves. Whatever it is, it makes your body more susceptible to damage by fire."
"So no setting vampires on fire anymore, got it. I call dibs on the crossbow, Faith." Xander headed to the book cage and the weapons stored in it.
"How do you know a vamp took Red?" Faith asked as she grabbed a sword.
"Willow's scent moves toward the back of the Library, there's two exits back there, a fire escape and a sewer entrance. Angel was fond of using the sewer entrance and we know from when Drusilla's group attacked the Library that other vampires know about it, some came in through that entrance. I won't know until I start tracking her scent which one whoever took her used, but I'm betting on the sewer. Friend of the Slayer gets taken or injured, a vampire is the first suspect."
"You really think you can track her by smell?" Faith asked, curious.
"Angel said I'm a predator, humans and vampires, techno vamp or not, are predators, he's right about that. And a human's sense of smell is already one of the strongest and is amped up even more in vampires, including me. I was in the sewers just yesterday and I know Willow's scent. I won't know until I actually do it, but there's a good chance I will be able to. And I have some other advantages that could help too."
"Like what?"
"Like the fact that I was possessed by a soldier version of myself last Halloween due to a spell and I still know what he knew. I put it to good use over the summer when Buffy ran away after sending Angel to Hell. Thanks to that knowledge I can track in other ways too. Add in the fact that I was also possessed by a Hyena spirit and I was left with better than average instincts and I think I have a definite shot at finding her and doing it fairly quickly. I just hope we don't find the same thing Buffy and I found when Jesse got taken into the sewers."
"Jesse?"
"Closest thing to a brother I had, he was taken the same day Buffy arrived in town."
Faith searched his face and found that except for the blazing hot eyes, he had no expression, he was controlling himself. "What did you find?" She asked, knowing there were only two possible answers to that question.
"A vampire wearing his face."
"B said you've destroyed vampires you knew."
"Jesse was the first, not the last."
Faith too was wondering how anyone could have thought the clown was anything but a mask if they were aware of the fact that he'd done that. Were they all blind? She'd only known him for a month and she realized, she'd simply assumed he was a horn dog because he'd drooled over her naked alligator wrestling story. She'd underestimated him too. She resolved not to do that anymore.
"Giles," Xander hooked the quiver of crossbow bolts onto his belt and loaded the crossbow. "when this is done, you need to get an industrial size lock on that sewer entrance. It's a vulnerability we sure as Hell can't afford and I want one on the one at the Mansion too."
"I'll get started on that as soon as I've recovered somewhat from my concussion."
"I'm thinking you should see a neurologist, Giles, cumulative head trauma can have long lasting effects. And you've had more concussions than any of the rest of us." He headed for the back of the Library, Faith following. "Combined."
"Yes, well. Something to put on my to-do list." Giles muttered, as he held an ice pack to his throbbing head.
Xander climbed down the ladder into the sewer tunnel, Faith following him. "It's cleaner than I thought it would be." She observed. "In the movies there's always puddles and stench and crap."
"I'm pretty sure the vamps maintain them." Xander answered. "And be glad your sense of smell isn't enhanced like the rest of you, because I'm smelling a whole lot that I don't want to be smelling. But Willow's scent is heading down this tunnel."
"What does Red smell like?" She followed him.
"Like the computers smell, I think, with a bit of book smell and strawberries."
"What do I smell like?"
"Coconut shampoo and vampire dust."
"Queen C?"
"Like the best perfume you've ever smelled."
Faith grinned at his back, he had it bad. She followed him through the sewer tunnels, occasionally he had to back track and catch the scent again and once he spotted a piece of cloth, no more than a few strands really, clinging to the tunnel wall and she realized his night vision had to be better than hers if he could spot that and he found Red's scent on it too.
"There's another scent along with hers," he murmured. "a dead smell, I think it's the guy that took her and he's definitely a vampire, given the smell and the tunnels. And I think I know where we are."
"Where?"
"Under the factory where Spike and Drusilla were living, Angelus took it over and Giles burned it out."
"Why?"
"Revenge. Angelus murdered his girlfriend."
The list of things she didn't know about this group she'd fallen in with was growing, Faith realized. What else didn't she know?
