Authors note: This is the first story I've ever done with Abby Sciuto from NCIS. Please let me know what you think so long as it's positive not negative. Absolutely no negative comments. In other words, absolutely no flames! Please read and review!
Damon Hotchner, a cybersecurity specialist, also known as forensics specialist tapped away at his keys, as he went over the evidence.
He dealt with all types of electronics, computers especially. Much like his cousin Ambrose Rossi, he was good with electronics, but while his cousin dealt with security systems his interest had gone in another direction. He helped solve crimes, though he mostly worked in his electronics lab behind the scenes.
Finally, he sat back satisfied, and his stomach growled. Damon checked his watch and saw it was dinnertime. Boy did time fly when one was very busy. He headed out of his lab after he sent his report to his bosses to get himself some dinner and afterwards he was going to head home to get some sleep.
Damon exited the building where he worked and headed for his favorite restaurant, which was close enough to walk to. Damon was so lost in his own thoughts that he accidentally bumped into someone that he didn't even realize was walking in his direction.
"Sorry, I wasn't paying attention," Damon apologized automatically, as soon as he realized that he had been so lost in his thoughts that his feet had automatically headed towards the restaurant he had chosen without paying attention to anybody else on the sidewalk.
"You nearly made me spill my coffee," a female voice replied, "but I managed to save it, so no harm done."
Damon was intrigued by the voice and finally looked up to find a woman of just under 6 feet with black hair and amazing green eyes standing in front of him. She wore a periwinkle blue lab coat and underneath that was a sleeveless top and some very nice pants.
"I'm really sorry, Miss, I was so lost in my thoughts that I wasn't watching where I was going," Damon immediately apologized again his eyes widening as soon as he looked directly into her face.
"I'm Abby Sciuto," Abby introduced herself.
"Damon Hotchner, Miss Sciuto. I'm sorry again, for bumping into you," Damon apologized yet again his brain still stunned that he had just met his mate. "I was distracted. Would you like to join me for dinner? I was heading for my favorite restaurant that's right down the block."
"The only restaurant down there is Guillermo's," Abby said.
"That's exactly where I was headed. It's one of my favorite spots to eat," Damon said. "I love Spanish food."
"So do I," Abby said. "I was just going have dinner at home, order in, but Guillermo's sounds better, if you're offering to let me join you."
"I wouldn't mind the company believe me," Damon said trying not to sound too eager. "I'm usually stuck in a lab all day and I hardly ever interact with anybody other then my colleagues, much less a gorgeous woman.
Abby blushed at the compliment.
Abby was indeed gorgeous with her black hair in spikes and eyes of green. Her lips were also full and luscious, and Damon was looking forward to kissing them when they got to that stage of their relationship. Damon tried his best not to stutter when he addressed his mate as he was gobsmacked at having met the one woman meant for him.
"I'll be happy to join you," Abby decided, as she loved Guillermo's and spending time with the handsome Damon Hotchner was hardly a hardship. Damon who also had black hair and green eyes and sharp cheekbones, the only difference being that Damon's was a true black while hers was more blue black while, both of them had green eyes they were different tints. Damon was also several inches taller than she was as she was 5 feet and 10 inches and Damon topped her by at least 4 inches.
"Excellent!" Damon exclaimed, as he led the way to Guillermo's that was down the block.
"So what lab do you work for Mr. Hotchner?" Abby wanted to know, as the two of them walked towards Guillermo's.
"Virtutech," Damon answered. "It's a private lab that sometimes works with law enforcement."
"I've heard of them," Abby said, "they help find evidence in technology like computers, vidscreens, even music players.
"So where do you work?" Damon asked in return.
"I'm a forensic scientist and I work..." Abby named a place.
"Well, it sounds like we both work in similar fields, which means we won't have to put things into simpler terms whenever we talk. If you knew how many times I had to explain things in simple language to people you'd probably be amazed," Damon said rolling his eyes in exasperation.
"What makes you think we'll ever see each other again after this one dinner?" Abby challenged.
"Well, I thought we could exchange numbers so we could talk and also, I would like to ask you for a date, Miss Sciuto," Damon said barely pausing in answering Abby's question while in his head, he was thinking there was no way in hell that he wasn't going to see her again as she was his mate after all, even if she wasn't aware of that fact.
"You barely know me. Aren't you being a little bit preemptive?" Abby asked calmly feeling a thrill go up her spine at Damon's forthrightness in immediately asking her for a date. "We barely met five minutes ago."
"Wait until we are seated and then I'll answer that question," said Damon quietly, as they approached Guillermo's.
The two of them entered the restaurant and were immediately escorted to a table as the place wasn't that busy at this particular time. It was late enough that it was not the prime dinnertime, which is why they got a table quickly with no waiting.
"So?" Abby asked as soon as the waitress had taken their drink orders.
"No, I don't think I'll being preemptive, because for one thing, how often do people like us get to talk to someone who are in similar professions who are just as intelligent?" Damon pointed out logically continuing the previous conversation without pause once the waitress had taken their drink orders and left them to look over the menu.
"I understand your point, but still we really don't know anything about each other," Abby said. "You could be a serial killer for all I know, a cross dresser or even just a perv."
"While that's true, I'm willing to take a chance if you are if you knew how long it had been since I've actually had a date..." Damon said his voice trailing off. "I don't want to pass up the opportunity to at least become friends. Someone I can talk to who will understand me without me having to go into a long-winded explanation."
"I understand," Abby said. She could sense Damon's loneliness, his deep-seated need for someone to talk to, to understand him. She'd always been able to sense others emotions and she wasn't sure if was just because she was observant, a good people reader or if she really was sensing other's emotions. This was a man that spent most of his time by himself, likely in his lab or at least at home. Abby doubted he was married if that loneliness she sensed was real and not just her observational skills.
She was a keen observer of human nature whenever she was out in public and could tell a lot about a person just from observing them.
"It's been over a year since I've had a date," Abby said. "I've just been too busy and there's been nobody I've liked enough to even consider it. Like you, I want somebody that understands me when I talk in scientific terms and a lot of people outside of those I work with of course, just don't."
"A year is nothing," Damon laughed. "It's been over five years for me." He wanted to say that it had been over 25 years since he'd had a date, but his mate didn't know he was different from her at least not right now, so he had to lie at least a little.
"That's a long dry spell," Abby winced.
"Maybe for some people, like my brother for example, but while I like sex as much as the next person, I don't need it constantly, like some men," Damon explained falling silent as their meals arrived.
"I guess my libido just isn't as strong as some men's," Damon added, shrugging.
"That will probably change if you meet the right woman," Abby suggested having known several people like Damon. "Intelligent people like us a lot of times don't have as a strong libido as other people."
"Probably," Damon shrugged, knowing that the right woman sat across from him in the booth they occupied. "My parents have been wanting me to settle down for years. It just hasn't happened yet."
"That's what every parent wants," Abby laughed. "At least the good ones anyway."
"None of my siblings have settled down either," Damon shrugged, "so it's not like I'm the only candidate for marriage and family."
What Damon didn't say was that none of his siblings had settled down for this generation, but he also had plenty of siblings that had come from different generations then his own. It looked like he was just next for it to happen to and he didn't mind at all as he had been lonely for sometime now. That was true for all of his family that weren't mated, though, ones that were several centuries old so he wasn't alone in being lonely. They all had their ways of coping and that was by staying as busy as possible no matter what that activity was.
"So how many siblings do you have," Abby asked.
"Three," Damon answered honestly. "One brother, two sisters."
"Well, you certainly have more than I have as I only have one brother Lucas. Also, I found out sometime ago I was adopted when I was a baby so while I love my parents that adopted me and also my adopted brother, it isn't the same as having those that share your DNA."
"So you didn't go looking for your real parents? Check the old records and all that," Damon wanted to know.
"I'm not sure I want to know, as my mother at least gave me up," Abby said.
"There could be all kinds of reasons for that, though," Damon said. "Your mother might've had a good reason for giving you up. Like her family insisted, because she was too young when she had you or even that she wanted to give you a good life, even if that was with someone else. That kind of thing happens even today, just like it did centuries ago. She could even have died giving birth to you and so you ended up being adopted, because no one knew who the father was."
"That's true," Abby admitted seeming thoughtful, "but that doesn't mean I'm not afraid of finding out the truth. My mother could've been a drug addict as drugs are still a major problem and have been for centuries. She also could've been a prostitute, as that's still a popular profession, even in this century."
"That's very true," Damon agreed not bothering to argue because Abby was very right.
The two of them continued to chat as they ate their dinners and discovered that they had a lot in common.
Both of them loved animals and while Damon had a dog, Abby had a gerbil, but had been thinking about getting a cat.
"What do you have against dogs?" Damon wanted to know.
"Nothing, but cats are more independent and I wouldn't have to walk them, as they would just go in their litter box," Abby said. "They also don't need as much affection and attention as dogs tend to, and since I'm often not home that would be a good thing.
"Well, at least you're not allergic. I also understand your reasoning," Damon admitted, smiling.
"No, that's not my problem," Abby said smiling.
"So what about another date, Miss Abigail?" Damon asked, smiling charmingly. "I'm assuming Abby is short for Abigail, but you're welcome to tell me if I'm wrong."
"In this case, you're not wrong," Abby admitted. "It was a good guess, since it's the common nickname for that baby name."
He'd often been told he looked like his father Aaron, including his smile, except for his green eyes, which were his mother's. The fact that he and Abby had the same colored eyes meant the possibility was great that their eventual children would get his parents eye color. Of course, considering most of the rest of his family had brown eyes and that color was dominant, a lot of those children might get that color pupil as well. That was for later, though, even if he couldn't help imagining what a child of his, and Abby's would look like. They both had black hair and green eyes so a child would likely get both their black hair at well as eye color.
That was for later, though there was no point of worrying about that at least right now.
Damon snatched the check as soon as the waitress returned, even as he waited for Abby to respond to his request.
"Hey! I can pay my portion of the bill," Abby mildly protested.
"I never claimed you couldn't!" Damon shot back, even as he signed the bill and left a healthy tip for the waitress. "I don't mind I promise."
Abby sighed and rolled her eyes to let Damon know what she thought of his gentlemanly behavior, but gave in, as they were out in public after all.
Damon simply chuckled at her, even as they rose in order to leave the restaurant together.
"So about that date?" Damon reminded Abby as the two walked to the front of the restaurant in order to leave.
"You sure can be persistent can't you?" Abby half smiled to show she wasn't upset.
"When I meet a woman I really like, of course, I can be," Damon said not telling Abby exactly how desperate he was to get her to agree to another date. After all, Abby had no idea that she was his mate, as she didn't know about immortals and probably also didn't believe in the supernatural at all since 99% of the human race did not with rare exceptions. "Remember, I haven't dated in five years, and it'll probably be five more at least, before I meet anyone I like half as well as you. I've even dated some of my coworkers and really I don't like doing that, as that causes friction when I break it off or they do, which makes work uncomfortable whenever I run into them."
There was no way he was going to ever date again if Abby rejected him, though she didn't know that, and wouldn't be given that information for months
"A point," Abby admitted, feeling rather sad that what seemed like such a nice intelligent guy hadn't dated at all in years, but on the other hand, those women's loss was her gain if she was willing to take Damon up on his offer. "All right," Abby finally agreed after contemplating for a few seconds whether or not to accept Damon's offer.
"Great!" Damon said enthusiastically.
"Just give me a few days warning, especially if you're gonna go for anything except casual," Abby said.
"Actually, I was thinking this first time that since we're both into science, there's a lecture they're given at the local university," Damon suggested. "We can go out to eat afterwards if you like."
"Which university is it at?" Abby asked.
"George Mason," Damon immediately responded. "Of course, if you want to do something else, let me know and I can just go another day."
"So what's the lecture about?" Abby wanted to know.
"There's a lecture about electronics in general and there's supposed to be a segment on computers, which is the one I'm interested in, just to see if I can learn something new. It's supposed to be fascinating, as electronics in general have advanced so much since I was born."
"That is so true," Abby laughed lightheartedly. "It sounds rather interesting, so I'll be happy to attend with you."
"We can go out to eat afterwards, as I know some good restaurants near there," Damon said.
"Sounds good," Abby agreed, as they exchanged link numbers before parting.
