Chapter 6
Vi laid still on her back. Eyes closed, listening for familiar sounds. She could feel herself start to wake but was stuck between unconscious and conscious. 'Where am I' she thought. The smells, the sounds, this isn't my room. She tried without success to open her eyes, to bring herself out of this heavy sleep. unable to, she decided to focus more on the room around her.
Beep.. beep…beep
What is that sound, the last time I heard that I was..no I can't be I can't be back there.
Vi began to shake, trying to throw herself awake, she needed to open her eyes, to escape, to get back.
Suddenly an arm was holding her, pushing her back into the bed. "Why won't they let me move, why can't I open my eyes"?
A voice, no 2 voices. People were talking about her. They sounded, angry, no concerned.
"Vi can you hear me"?
A voice called to her, pulling her from the darkness.
"Vi, Vi, you can wake up now, it's alright open your eyes".
Vi began to open her eyes, squinting as she looked at the two blurry unfamiliar faces that were staring down at her.
"Hi Vi, I'm Dr Samuels. Can you hear me alright"?
Vi nodded, as her vision started to focus.
"Great, do you know where you are"?
"Stillwa". She began to say before pausing. 'Wait I can't be in Stillwater, there's no way', she thought. "I'm, I'm in a hospital".
"Yes, that's right, Piltover general to be exact. Do you know why your here"?
Vi closed her eyes trying to think of the last memory she had before waking up. 'I was with Caitlyn, ya we were getting lunch, she got angry at me, then we were called to a scene. We left, there was an alley'. "I WAS SHOT". Vi yelled out as her eyes opened wide. She scanned the room looking for Caitlyn. Panic began to take over when she didn't see her in the room. "Caitlyn, the Sherriff, did she get shot, is she injured"? Vi said in a panic as she tried to sit herself up before searing pain shot down the right side of her body, causing her to fall back to the bed.
"Easy, easy, you shouldn't be trying to get up sweetheart". Said the nurse as she helped ease Vi back into the bed.
"The Sherriff is just fine; she was in earlier when they brought you in". Said the Dr trying to calm Vi back down. "Your body has taken a lot of damage; it's going to be a while before your able to jump out of that bed. For now, it's best if you try and rest. Your nurse Becky here will make sure your taken care of. If you have any questions please ask her, and if she can't answer them, she will relay them to myself or a colleague. You're in good hands here officer, and might I say you sound like a real hero, saving the Sherriff and all".
Vi squirmed at the thought of being called a hero. To her she didn't save the Sherriff, she saved her friend. Something that didn't need the title of hero.
The Dr then gave a few notes to the nurse before exiting the room. Becky then walked back over to Vi, checking her vitals, and making sure all the tubes running from Vi's body were still secured, as she went over the extant of Vis injuries with her.
Vi was just now becoming aware of all the equipment she was hooked up to. A tube running through her left arm supplying some sort of liquid. Her right arm securely bandaged and held to her chest in a sling. Tubes that sat in her nostrils, supplying extra oxygen. Patches that she could feel on her chest that had wires going to a machine measuring heart rate. Vi looked around, eyeing all the expensive equipment used to keep people alive. With only one thought that kept occupying her thoughts. 'Where's Caitlyn'?
Vi closed her eyes tight as a small tear made its way out. She never expected in a situation like this to wake up alone. Sure, it was late, probably middle of the night, but still, did she really not mean as much to the Sherriff as she thought? "Hey Becky, what time is it"?
The nurse that was sitting at the small computer entering data, turned and looked up at Vi, noticing she looked a little distressed. "Looks like it's almost 2 am dear". She said as she walked up and stood next to Vi. "How are you feeling, the pain, is it very bad at the moment?
Vi now realizing her whole body ached. "I've felt worse".
Becky gave a concerned chuckle. "I would hate to know what worse looks like". She then reached for Vis left hand giving it a little squeeze, "Don't worry dear, I'm not going anywhere. Ill be here all night for you".
Vi looked up at the nurse wondering if somehow, she could read her mind. "Uh thanks". She said as she felt slightly better at the thought of not being alone.
"Well don't thank me just yet, I need to take a look at those bandages, make sure they don't need to be changed just yet." Becky began pulling the blankets down from Vi, and pulled her hospital gown up to check on the extra-large bandage that covered Vi's hip. "Well, this one looks alright for now". She said as she walked to the other side of the bed. "She then pulled the gown up to Vi's chest, as she slowly lifted her right arm.
"Whoa, at least let me buy you dinner first". Vi said as she felt the nurses hand run under her right breast.
"Well, I may just have to take you up on that offer". Becky said as she winked at Vi, before pulling her gown back down. "Bandages look good for now, but should be changed in a few hours, we don't want any infections".
Vi began looking at Becky, just now realizing just how pretty she was. Becky was a young nurse, mid 20s with dark black hair, and blue eyes. She was on the shorter side but seemed like she took good care of herself. And although Vi couldn't see to much of her figure under her scrubs, she had a feeling she was fit, with just the right curves.
"So, Becky, how long am I going to be confined to the bed"?
"Well, I would have to ask the Dr, but I think right now it all depends on how well you heal over the next few days. I think your biggest risk at the moment is infection, so as long as we are able to keep the wounds clean, you should be alright".
"Hmm sounds like I may be needing some sponge baths in the near future". Vi said as she was now the one winking at the nurse.
"Hmm well depending on your attitude I might leave that duty to the next shift, but don't worry I think you will like Ethel, she's a nice lady". Becky couldn't help the large smile that formed on her face, as she watched a slight frown appear on the enforcers at this statement.
"Ethel huh, sounds like a silver fox if you ask me".
Becky began to chuckle as she imagined Vi flirting with her 60-year-old colleague. "You're quite the flirt, looks like I'm going to have to be on my toes with you".
"mmm toes, back, whatever you're comfortable with".
The young nurse began to blush bright red as she looked at her patient. "Just what am I going to do with you"? She said as she sat back down at her computer.
Vi watched as the young nurse entered note after note. The longer the night drew on the more pain she found herself in. "Hey Becky"?
"Yes".
"I'm not feeling so great".
Becky got up from her chair and walked over to Vi. "On a scale of 1 to 10, how much pain are you in"?
"Ide say at least a 9".
"Alright dear, I can give you a stronger dose of medicine, but it will probably knock you out for the next few hours".
"Well, I should probably try and get some rest anyway", Vi said a little hesitantly.
"Ok ill be right back".
Vi watched Becky leave the room, as she started feeling a little nervous about going back to sleep. She wasn't sure why, but the thought of waking up alone in the hospital terrified her.
"Alright, you will start to feel this pretty quick, as I'm just going to put it right into your iv". Just as Becky was about to squeeze the needle, she looked down and saw Vi becoming nervous. She grabbed and squeezed Vi's hand in a reassuring manner. "Don't worry dear, I won't leave your side". Vi visibly became more relaxed, as the complete stranger made her feel like she wasn't alone.
Vi could feel the effects of the drugs almost instantly. Her body began to relax, the pain subsiding. Her eyelids began to feel heavy as she watched the nurse take a seat next to her, holding her hand as she drifted off.
