Chapter 21: So Winded

A rock pigeon walked across the ground at Washington State Park in the midevening. It came to a row of four benches with game boards. It approached the first table and flew up onto it. It looked toward Trevor and Lucky, who were seated at the second bench. It tilted its head, a curious coo coming from it. They tried not to smile, but they couldn't help themselves.

"What a beautiful pigeon," she said.

"Pigeons are active at all times of the day. This is especially true at night," he replied.

"This reminds me of Kevin encountering pigeons in Central Park in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. He was eating a cookie when a pigeon greeted him. He decided to feed it. More pigeons joined in. They ate every bit of cookie crumb. Then the Pigeon Lady appeared and freaked him out. He tried to run away, but his foot was stuck in between rocks. She got him unstuck. He apologized to her for screaming in her face. She showed him how to feed pigeons with seeds. They went to a concert hall and had a nice chat there," Lucky explained with much pride.

"Who would've thought a homeless lady would befriend a kid who was lost in one of the biggest cities in the world?" Trevor asked, giving a shrug.

"Strange things happen every day," Lucky admitted and ran her tongue all over the inside of her mouth. "Sometimes, they are very unexpected."

"Like my family and me learning about my grandfather's past being connected to the Ghostbusters," Trevor said, his eyebrows raising.

"Exactly," Lucky said while flicking his nose. "Anyway, I have a little something for the pigeon."

Lucky reached into her pocket in which she pulled out a bunch of seeds. She stood up and went over to the table. She held out her hand. The pigeon went over and started eating from it. It emitted a soft coo. Another pigeon joined in, followed by two more. Trevor rose to his feet, going to her side.

"This is so cool," Trevor whispered in amazement.

"They are hungry. That's for sure," Lucky responded with a smile.

"Dino thought pigeons were dirty birds. He would often scare them off the windowsill of any apartment we lived in," Trevor grumbled, rolling his eyes.

"What a jerk," Lucky scoffed in irritation.

He snorted. "Indeed."

She flared her nostrils. "He just doesn't appreciate the beauty of pigeons."

Unbeknownst to the couple, Dino looked over the top of a bush not far from them. He took binoculars from his pocket. He put them over his eyes. He looked toward the couple. Another pigeon flew in and began eating from Lucky's hand.

"Pigeons," Dino mumbled in disgust. "They are such filthy things. They were constantly pooping on my favorite car in Chicago."

The pigeons ate a little faster. Lucky tried not to chuckle, but she couldn't help herself. Trevor pulled her braids behind her neck. He tickled her cheek in a very light manner.

"You guys are really hungry tonight," Lucky said honestly.

"Yep," Trevor agreed. He chuckled at her taking her hand away once the pigeons were finished. "Imagine if those critters pecked your hand until there was a hole in it."

"That would be wild," Lucky commented while rubbing her hands rapidly. "However, a pigeon's beak isn't sharp enough to do such a thing."

"I had a parakeet 'bite' my finger with its beak at the Nashville Zoo. It hurt like shit!" Trevor exclaimed.

Lucky touched his shoulder. "The parakeet has a very sharp beak."

"Phoebe laughed when I shook my hand about," Trevor murmured, heading over to the bench and sitting down. She joined him quickly. "I told her to shut the hell up. Mom got on my case over cursing."

"How old were you when this happened?" Lucky wondered.

Trevor exhaled. "I was eleven. She was eight. It was right before we found out Dino had cheated on Mom."

Dino narrowed his eyes at him and his girlfriend. He wished his son wouldn't talk about his infidelity. He saw Callie as the sole reason he cheated. He recalled how she wouldn't have sex with him in hopes of having another son because she thought having two children was enough. He never found out if the mistress who miscarried was having a boy. He was actually willing to raise the baby with her if it was.

Dino shook his thoughts out of his head. He removed the binoculars from his eyes. He observed the pigeons flying away. He sighed in relief while looking down. He jerked his head upward a second later. He ducked behind the bush when Trevor and Lucky looked over their shoulders. He turned around, placing his back against it. He swallowed hard as his heart beat somewhat fast. He pressed his lips together.

"Do you think we are being watched, Trevor?" Lucky wondered, her body shaking somewhat.

"I don't know," Trevor answered as they looked at each other. "Do you?"

"I have no clue," Lucky admitted. "There are many places to hide if people want to spy on others here."

"Yeah," Trevor agreed nervously.

"Let's get back to the others, okay?" Lucky suggested.

"Sure," Trevor agreed and stood up along with her. "You want to stay at the Firehouse for the night?"

"Sure," Lucky said, nodding rapidly. She let out a happy sigh and clasped her hands together. "Winston said he didn't mind if I decided to do that. I just have to text him about it."

"Great," Trevor said excitedly. "Let's go before someone decides to scare us silly for the hell of it."

"Yeah," Lucky said, nodding rapidly. "Let's."

Trevor and Lucky grasped hands and started walking. Dino stood up slowly. He waited until they were a bit of a distance away. He proceeded to follow them. He slipped his binoculars into his pocket. He clenched his teeth somewhat tightly.

"You think you buttheads are safe?" Dino hissed in a soft way. "You are so wrong. You will get a taste of our medicine very soon."

Dino picked up his pace somewhat. A fly flew around his head while buzzing softly. He waved his hand at it, sending it away. He flared his nostrils before snorting somewhat.

00000

Trevor and Lucky reached the Firehouse within eighteen minutes. He opened the door, its hinges squeaking loudly. He stepped inside and held it open. She walked in, looking over her shoulder as he closed it. Gary looked up from pouring oil into Ecto-1's engine when they came to it. The hood was propped up with a rod.

"Hey, you two," Gary greeted while putting the oil down.

"Hey yourself, Dad," Trevor said with a smile. He noticed the canister and put his hand on his side. He tapped his foot three times. "Putting oil into the car, huh?"

"Yep," Gary replied, putting the rod down and slamming the hood shut. He grabbed a rag from his pocket. He wiped grease off his hand. "It's said a vehicle needs an oil change once every three thousand miles."

"That hunk of junk has a ton of miles on it," Lucky said with a giggle.

Gary put his hand on the hood. "You would think this old car would be a pile of junk now. Nope. It's still going strong."

"It is because you keep up maintenance on it," Lucky said while crossing her arms.

"Of course, nothing lasts forever," Trevor pointed out truthfully.

"You are right, Trev," Gary agreed. "Some people will never work on their vehicles. They don't check the brakes, tires, or engine. If their vehicles run, they drive them without a thought. On the interstate, the demands on a vehicle are much greater. Tires are usually the first thing to go when it goes kaput."

"Oh, there goes my tire!" Trevor said in Goofy's voice.

"Nice imitation of Goofy," Lucky complimented.

Trevor held his nose upward. "Thanks."

"Don't hold your nose so high. You will drown if it pours down rain," Gary warned sternly.

"I don't give a shit. I will hold it as high as I want," Trevor said, a big smirk forming on his face.

Lucky snickered. "Then I will fix that."

Lucky placed her finger on the back of Trevor's head. She moved it to where he was looking ahead. He took hold on it and pulled it away. He put it at her side before giving a gentle pat. He emitted a heavy sigh. Gary became a bit concerned.

"What is it, Trev?" Gary asked, taking his hand off the hood.

"You won't believe this, but Lucky and I believe we were being watched at Washington State Park," Trevor admitted grimly.

"What?" Gary asked shockingly. "That is twice in one day."

"I know," Trevor said, his body shaking a bit. "I believe it was either Dino or Mina spying on us from behind one of many bushes there."

"It could have been both of them," Lucky added.

"I wouldn't be surprised," Gary whispered and swallowed hard. "Phoebe says…"

As Gary continuing talking, Dino was listening with his ear pressed against the first door. He ran his tongue all over the inside of his mouth. He caught 'I have no doubt that bastard and his girlfriend have it in them to be crazy' and 'Dino probably thinks he's manly. Manly men don't ridicule their daughters.' He let out a loud scoff.

"I am more of a man than you ever will be, wimp," Dino hissed, his nostrils flaring. "I have built things that you never will. That includes putting a whole car together." He spotted a black rat wandering across the street. "I better get out of here before someone notices me."

Dino walked away from the door. Gary moved a little closer to Trevor and Lucky. He moved his finger from one side to the next. He formed a determined expression on his face.

"That is why Dino will never better than any man who has been part of the Ghostbusters," Gary said proudly. "He called me a wimp, but I bet he would run at the sight of real danger."

"I think so too," Lucky agreed.

"Many men brag about their manliness. They are told to prove it. They dissolve into a tirade of insults. They reveal themselves as real wimps," Trevor explained.

"A manly man doesn't have to brag. He shows his manliness," Gary commented while drawing a circle in midair with his finger.

"Yep," Trevor said, chuckling to himself. "You are definitely a manly man, Dad. You have showed your manliness many times."

"Thank you, son," Gary said, going over to him. He ruffled his hair before tapping his nose with his finger. "Don't ever brag about being manly to anyone. They will demand you prove it."

"Don't worry," Trevor said, holding up his hands. "I won't."

Gary smiled in a warm way. Lucky cleared her throat, causing him to look at her. She clasped her hands together. She shifted her weight from one foot to the next.

"I want to let you know that I have decided to stay the night here," Lucky announced happily.

"That's fine," Gary said and licked his lips. "Are you letting Winston know?"

Lucky grabbed her smartphone. "I am getting ready to. I will be right back."

Lucky headed for the basement stairs and proceeded to go down them. Gary and Trevor looked at each other.

"You got a great girl there," Gary complimented.

"Thanks. Lucky is one in a million," Trevor responded with a smile. He started talking about his and Lucky's walk to Washington State Park.
