Percy loved Sundays. Every few weeks, he and Annabeth would sneak out of camp and go to the movie theater so they could watch the newest action movie or something like that. They'd been doing it for over two years now, and nobody had caught them yet. They found a way around the harpies so that they wouldn't get eaten down to their bones. Not like anyone would really care, though.
Annabeth was reluctant to start their tradition at first, but she quickly came around after they went and saw The Martian. Percy didn't peg her for a movie girl at first, but it turns out she enjoyed watching movies a lot, and then breaking down the story on the way back to camp. She really was Athena's daughter.
This week, they decided to try something different. One of our Hermes friends who often smuggled in illegally downloaded movies told them he'd seen this new film called La-La Land, and that it was pretty funny and had a lot of songs, but also adult humor. We decided there was no harm in seeing it for ourselves, since we both like edgy humor to an extent, and besides, who hates a good song?
"Percy, hand me my invisibility cap," Annabeth whispered.
"Just gimme a sec," he responded, grabbing a bag of snacks. The ones at the theater were way too expensive.
It was already eight o clock, so they would have to be quiet. If someone caught them, Chiron would chew them out and they would be under constant surveillance. They hadn't encountered any monsters yet, unless you count all the movie critics.
They snuck their way past the borders thanks to Annabeth's invisibility cap and Percy's ability to form a bubble around water. See, they found a quick way out of camp, but it required them to go under the lake. It was perfect; he could form an air bubble around them, and the harpies would be none the wiser. Every now and then a water spirit would stare at them though.
Adrenaline kicked in and soon they were home free. It was only a mile walk to the nearest movie theater, and they were there in no time, smiling in rebellion the whole way there.
"Two tickets to La-La Land, please," Annabeth said.
"Your movie is in room 9. Have a nice night!"
Annabeth gave one to Percy and stuffed the other in her pocket. They didn't always pay for tickets, but they felt bad whenever they snuck into the theater. Anyways, they went into their room and found their seats. There was nobody else in the theater besides them, so they pretty much got to sit wherever they wanted. It was a score.
"Here, in the middle!" Percy said.
"No, a little to the left…" Annabeth mused.
They sat down and waited for the commercials to stop. Percy opened up a can of blue coke and handed another one to Annabeth. There was The Conjuring, Passengers (with Chris Pratt and Scarlet Johansen), The Autopsy, Suicide Squad and more. It was a pretty decent year for movies.
The lights dimmed, and they looked at each other excitedly, but then looked away quickly. Annabeth ran a hand through her hair. The movie began, and for a moment they were confused until everyone broke out into song on the highway.
Throughout the whole movie, they were completely in awe, encapsulated by the music and flawless choreography. When it was over, they sat in its wake, taking in the masterpiece they had just witnessed. All Percy could say was, "City of Stars, are you shining just for me?" Annabeth was just as stunned, but responded out of pure instinctual emotion, "City of stars, there's so much that I can't see!" It was a true La-La Land moment.
They were singing all the way back to camp, even underwater. The naiads and water spirits sang along with them, though they weren't sure how they knew the lyrics, since there was no such thing as movies underwater. Whenever they got to the chorus, they would look at each other with admiration, and for the first time they saw each other in a different light, just like Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.
When they emerged from the water, Percy sighed and looked around, before saying, "This is home."
They nearly jumped when they saw Chiron, who was standing by the river and waiting for them. They talked like a cat had got their tongue, trying to explain even a semblance of the miracle they had witnessed in the cinema.
"I'm not mad at you, children," Chiron said with his arms crossed, "I just wished you had invited me! Oh, to the fools that dream…I don't know what you came to do, but I want to do it with you."
Their mouths hung agape, like an awooga-ing monkey. Chiron liked La-La Land? I mean, it wasn't much of a surprise–it was an incredible film after all.
"Now off to bed you two. It's getting late. The harpies will come and eat you."
"Yes sir," they said in unison, before running off to their respective cabins. They could not deny there was something new between them, some sort of tension that could only be relieved by some sort of intimate and romantic musical number.
The next morning, they sat next to each other at breakfast, neither of them having the courage to break the very hard and cold ice that was like a cup of water that stayed in the freezer a little too long to the point where it would need hot water if it was to melt within an hour.
"A-Annabeth, I need to talk to y-you," Percy said shyly.
"Y-yes?" She responded, brushing a lock of her blonde hair to reveal that she did in fact have two eyes.
"All of these campers…they don't care about life outside these walls. But we? We've seen it. We've lived it, each in our own way. The people here? They worship everything and value nothing."
"What are you trying to say?" Annebeth breathed heavily.
"What I'm trying to say is, we've been through fire and water together. Not just metaphorically, but literally too. Our passions may be taking us in different directions, but…I'm always gonna love you."
"Percy, what the hell are you talking about? Are you saying that maybe I'm not good enough?"
"What? No! You're literally a female version of me, except way smarter."
"So why don't we just stay together?"
"Good point."
THE END
