"Just so we're clear, the sun sets in about eight hours. If we don't succeed before then, Elena will be dead, I'll be gone, and the rest of you will be left to fend for yourselves."
Stefan and Alyssa join Klaus at the high school for the rescue mission while Damon and Bonnie track down Abby.
Stefan and Klaus pull up to the school's parking lot in Klaus' car with Alyssa. They get out, and Alyssa receives a text.
"Abby just showed up."
"Good. Perhaps this plan won't be an epic failure after all." Klaus says and looks at Stefan. "If this goes off and we drop the history teacher in the Atlantic, I'm still leaving with Elena."
"I'll go with you," Stefan tells him.
"Really? What's the catch?"
"There's no catch. I'd turn my back on everything here to ensure Elena's safe."
"And that is what makes you the better option. It's a shame it's not easier for Elena to see that; I mean, think she's wasting her time with Damon."
"You know, all this time and energy you've spent trying to get me and my brother to hate each other. It's actually had the opposite effect."
Klaus laughs, "Has it? Has it? Well then, perhaps I should let Elena decide which Salvatore joins us because you and Damon are so close."
"Ah, go for it. Damon and I have been through a hell of a lot worse than you." Stefan walks away but stops when he sees Alyssa and the look on her face. He realizes she heard what he said about leaving everything behind to ensure Elena's safety.
He walks over to her to explain what she just heard, but she walks away. He didn't need to say anything. What he told Klaus was plenty.
Klaus walked over to Alyssa after witnessing the snub. "Well, that's an interesting development."
She tried to ignore him, hoping he would disappear, but he didn't.
"I wonder what Elena would say if she knew her little sister was lusting after her beau. Of course, it might not matter if she has feelings for the other brother. I guess what they say is true. We want what we can not have."
She turned to him, looking to knock the sly smile off his face. "You would know, wouldn't you? You wanted mommy and daddy's love yet they wanted you dead. You want your family's loyalty, but Rebekah will choose love over you every time, and Elijah and Kol abandon you every chance they get. I don't even have to mention Caroline, do I?"
The smile on his face disappears. "You should be more careful when you point a finger at someone else. There are always three more pointing back at you. So I wouldn't throw stones at a glass house if I were you."
She walks away and waits for Bonnie and Damon on the other side of the building, away from Klaus and Stefan. When they eventually do come, they're not alone.
"Uh, way," she says, walking over to Jeremy. "You leave now."
"Can't; Bonnie needs me if she's gonna take down Rick."
She turns to Bonnie for an explanation.
"I need to stop a human heart for the spell to work."
"No! No way! If you need a human sacrifice, I'll snatch someone off the street, but you are not sacrificing my brother."
"I have the ring; it'll be fine."
"You've already died once wearing that thing, and if, for some reason, Bonnie can't restart your heart and you do indeed die, that makes twice. Who knows how often you must die before ending up like Alaric."
"Which would be bad," Damon adds, "we don't want another psycho alter ego case on our hands, so give me the ring."
Jeremy stops her from leaving. "Elena's my sister. No one's gonna fight harder for her than me. No one else needs to die in the crossfire."
Klaus and Stefan walk up to them.
"Look at this: one big, happy family," Klaus says.
Bonnie pulls out a small vial with her blood.
"Drink this. It's my blood. It bridges us all together so that when I stop Jeremy's heart, you'll have the power to stop Alaric's. You need to make a physical connection to his bloodstream, a vein, artery, something connected to his heart."
Damon drinks some blood out of the vial and hands it to Stefan.
"If one of us gets a clean shot, take it; the other two, hold him down." Stefan takes a swig of the blood and passes it to Alyssa.
To Bonnie, she says, "Just so we're clear, if Jeremy dies, I'll kill you."
She takes a swig and passes it to Klaus. "Before we all walk through these doors, let's get on the same page, shall we? I was the one who created your vampire bloodline, so I am responsible for your lives, Tyler's, Caroline's, and, of course, Abby's, should anything go wrong.
"Or you're just lying to save your ass," Damon replies.
"I'm not lying. But go ahead, call my bluff; let the teacher kill me. You'll all be dead soon thereafter." Klaus drinks the remainder of the blood.
"Let's just get this over with, shall we?" Alyssa asks, and they walk into the school, leaving Bonnie and Jeremy behind.
Alyssa split up from the group and went into a different entrance than them. Damon had told them that Rick was keeping them in his classroom, so she entered from the west of the building while Klaus took the Nort,h, and Damon and Stefan came in from the opposite end.
She walks the several halls to get to his class and finds Alaric with his hand around Elena's throat, holding her up against it.
"You don't deserve to live."
"So then, why am I still alive? There's obviously no humanity left in you, so what's stopping you, Alaric? If you want me dead then kill me."
Alaric's eyes start to become red and veiny.
"Do it! Kill me!"
Alaric's eyes become normal again and he releases Elena from his grasp. Suddenly, Stefan and Damon rush up to him and grab him by his arms.
Alaric pushes them off of him and breaks Stefan's back. Stefan falls to the ground, temporarily dead. Damon rushes towards Alaric, but Alaric snaps his neck, temporarily killing him as well. Alyssa rushes toward Alaric and places his hand on Alaric's chest.
Alaric manages to pull her hand out of his chest and throws her to the ground. Klaus rushes forward, throwing him into the lockers. Rick turns them around, pulling out the white oak stake and pushing it towards his heart.
Alyssa gets up and rushes towards them again, putting Rick in a chokehold. Rick takes the steak and jams it in her side, causing her to loosen her grip, and he pushes her away.
Alaric grabs Klaus and throws him against the lockers. He flips him over and is about to stake him with the white oak stake, but Klaus fights back. Alyssa watches as a struggle ensues, where Alaric continues to try to push the stake towards his heart, and Klaus tries to make it away.
She looked at Elena and gathered all her strength to stand up. She rushed behind her, wrapping her forearm around her neck.
She yells, "Stop!"
Alaric looks up at Alyssa, holding Elena.
"Let him go, or she dies."
"Let her go."
"Why? Because you still need her alive. There's a reason why Esther used her to make you, right? She didn't want you to be immortal, so she tied your life to a human one. Hers. That way, you have only one life span to kill all vampires, and then you'll be gone. So, when she dies, you die too."
"You're wrong."
"Am I?"
Her face transformed, and she started to bite into her neck.
"Stop! STOP! STOP! STOP!"
Alyssa's face goes back to normal. "Let him go."
Alaric lets him go, and Alyssa releases Elena.
Klaus seizes the chance and throws Alaric off his back. He rushes towards Elena, grabs her, and leaves.
"You know he's going to kill her, right," Alaric said after he picked himself up off the floor.
She looks down at where Damon and Stefan lay on the ground. "Yeah, and those two idiots are going to get themselves killed trying to save her, which means I have to go rescue the damsel in distress. Since her life is tied to yours and we're still undead, I trust you'll send them when they wake up."
Rick couldn't follow after them, so she knew he would relay the message. She just needed to keep him occupied until they did. Luckily, she had a talent for getting people to believe whatever she wanted.
"I can't believe you left me behind to keep her alive just to kill her in the end." She walks into the room, stopping beside the chair Elena was tied to in front of a fireplace.
"I've supposed you've come to stop me."
A woman comes in and, sticks a needle in Elena's arm and hooks a bag up to the other end. Elena's blood slowly begins to filter into it. "If I were, would I be stupid enough to come alone?"
"If only to keep your loved ones from ending up with their hearts ripped out."
"True. But in this case, I will keep them safe and get rid of you, hopefully for good. With Elena gone, I also get rid of Alaric, whose life purpose is to kill you and your family, who will, in turn, kill my friends and me."
"And you're free and clear to go after Damon or Stefan, whichever you choose."
"How long do you think this is going to take anyway?"
"Eager to get rid of me."
"Desperately."
Elena wakes up. She feels a prick in her arm and gasps. She looks down to see a nurse inserting a needle into her arm.
The nurse tells her to be careful. "Moving only makes it hurt more."
Elena's blood starts to run through a tube out of her body.
"What are you doing?"
"What does it look like?" Alyssa asks. "Draining you of all your blood."
Elena realizes she's tied down in a chair. The blood bag begins to fill up.
Tyler enters the room with a box of Klaus' stuff and stops dead when he sees Elena. "Elena?"
Tyler puts the box down and walks towards Elena.
"Tyler, help me!"
Tyler stops halfway.
Klaus' response, "He can't. He needs to fetch me more empty blood bags. About three liters' worth, please, Tyler."
"Tyler, please. Get Stefan, please."
"No, Tyler, get the bags." Tyler stands there for a moment, then rushes towards Elena.
Alyssa intercepts him.
Klaus speaks. "Forget the girl and get the bags. Now."
Tyler looks at Elena, then walks out of the room. Klaus walks behind Elena and grasps the back of the chair.
"So, that's it? You're just going to bleed me dry."
"Yes, but don't worry, it'll be completely painless. As the last drop is drawn, you'll fall asleep."
The nurse switches out the filled blood bag for a fresh one. Elena is becoming weaker.
"What about your hybrids?" Alyssa asks. "You'll need more than this to create your army."
Klaus takes one of the blood bags from the nurse.
"These last few liters will have to suffice. You see, by attempting to kill us, my mother strengthened the bond between my siblings and me. I don't need hybrids. I have my family."
"If you believe that, then why take her blood at all?" Alyssa asks. "You want a backup family, right? You know that your siblings will never trust you again."
"Stefan blames me for trying to tear him from his brother, but I think we both know who came between them." He looks at Elena. "That's why you won't choose. You know, you'll destroy their bond once you pick a Salvatore."
He looks back to Alyssa. "Of course, I'm sure you'll be waiting around to pick up the pieces of whomever heart she shatters. Though I'm wondering, are you hoping it'll be Damon or Stefan?"
Alyssa looks at Elena, who looks confused at first, but then a look of recognition hits her when she realizes what he means.
Klaus moves closer towards Elena. "Consider this me doing you a favor. Once you're dead, you won't have to choose. No broken hearts. Their family stays intact, and yours. But just between us girls, who would you have picked?"
"Rot in hell."
"You're welcome. Sweet dreams, Elena. It's been fun." Klaus walks past Elena, grabs her neck with his fingers, and leaves the room.
Alyssa follows behind him. "I hope now that you've gotten what you wanted, I won't be seeing you again. Hopefully, for at least a few centuries."
"As soon as I've drained Elena of all her blood, I'll take Tyler and leave this town."
"That's right, you don't know. Tyler broke his sire bond weeks ago, and now that he's free, I doubt he'll be leaving town or Caroline. Don't believe me, why don't you ask him yourself?"
Tyler continues to untie Elena from the chair.
Elena sees Klaus standing in the doorway. "Tyler."
Tyler turns around and stands up.
"So much for that sire bond."
"I'm not your little bitch anymore."
Klaus smiles and walks towards him. "How did you break the sire bond?"
"By breaking every bone in my body a hundred times for the girl I love."
"That's impossible."
"Is it?" Tyler walks up to Klaus. "Or maybe real love is stronger than fake loyalty. But what would you know about that?"
"You know, you should be thanking me. I gave you a gift. I took away your misery."
"You didn't give a crap about me! You didn't want to be alone!" Tyler walks back towards Elena and helps her up. "Come on."
Klaus rushes towards Elena and pushes her down. Her head hits a ledge and knocks her unconscious. Klaus then grabs Tyler by the throat and pushes him against a wall.
"Goodbye, Tyler."
Klaus attempts to grab Tyler's heart out of his chest, but Tyler twists his arm around. Alyssa comes from behind Klaus, sticking her hand through his back and into his heart.
Klaus' heartbeat begins slowing down, and he begins to desiccate.
