Chapter Thirty-Nine
After his conversation with Dean, Cas seemed to feel better, and went to school in a good mood. Though his leg still bothered him, his physiotherapist had decided he didn't need crutches, but he still had to wear his boot.
With no classes to worry about, most of the seniors focused on prom, and they were all encouraged to vote for the king and queen.
Dean put Cas's name down for his vote for king, then jokingly put his own name in for queen, and spent the rest of the day sniggering to himself at the thought.
Cas himself was excited for prom. He didn't have much experience with school dances before he'd come to Lawrence. He had never been asked to one before Halloween Homecoming, nor had he wanted to go.
They ran into Alfie a few times, as he tested out the new lenses he'd got for his camera, especially for prom, but mostly, Dean took any opportunity to make out with Cas when no one was watching. They'd decided not to sleep together until after prom, when they would go to their hotel, but Dean wanted Cas as pent up as possible beforehand. Cas seemed to know what he was doing, but rather than stopping him, returned the favour, until they were both desperate for each other.
'God, why did we think this was a good idea?' Dean groaned the morning of prom, with Cas on top of him in bed, both of them flushed and panting.
Cas didn't answer, but he couldn't stop himself from rolling his hips slightly and making them both moan quietly, before forcing himself to move away from Dean.
'We could just forget about it,' Dean suggested, his longing almost painful.
Cas just smiled and turned away, taking a few deep breaths to calm himself down, though not before giving Dean a show of touching himself over his pajamas.
'It's not a contest, you know,' Dean laughed, throwing a pillow at him.
'Then why am I winning?' Cas said, his eyes sparkling.
Dean bit his lip. Cas's competitive streak didn't often show itself, but it was all Dean could do to keep his hands off Cas when it did.
'Get dressed, Dean,' Cas laughed.
'Yes, sir,' Dean said, getting up and saluting Cas mockingly.
Cas wore his letter jacket to school that day, and his arms were around Dean at any possible moment, much to their friends' disgust.
'Get a room,' Jo said, wrinkling her nose at them during lunch.
'Got one,' Dean said without moving his eyes from Cas. 'We're just not allowed in it yet.'
As if to remind him how long it would be, Cas sneakily brushed his hand up Dean's thigh under the table and squeezed lightly.
'Ugh, you suck,' Dean whispered.
'Not yet, I don't,' Cas whispered back.
'Maybe you ought to take a cold shower, your hard-on is lifting the table,' Crowley smirked.
'Actually, I think that's Kevin's,' Dean said, nodding at Kevin, who was kissing Channing so fiercely he hadn't even heard his name.
Jo rolled her eyes, and went back to her lunch.
Finally, it was the end of the day, and they all hurried home to get ready.
Dean pulled the curtain across the bedroom, so he and Cas could surprise each other.
Dean gelled his hair down flat, carefully sweeping it back from his face, tied his tie, and snapped on his cufflinks.
'I'm done,' he called to Cas, and left the room.
Mary was waiting at the bottom of the stairs, already welling up and taking pictures.
Dean rolled his eyes, but smiled obligingly as he went down the stairs. He retrieved the ornamental lily boutonniere he'd bought for Cas from the cabinet he'd hidden it in. It was artificial, made of ivory and green silk, with a few delicate beads. Dean was proud of it, and he eagerly waited at the bottom of the stairs, twirling it in his hands.
When Cas emerged from their room, Dean's mouth dropped open. The red suit had been properly tailored, and even though Cas still had to wear the boot over it, he looked confident and proud.
'You look incredible,' Dean murmured, once Cas reached the bottom of the stairs. He stepped forward and pinned the boutonniere to Cas's lapel.
'Oh, it's beautiful,' Cas said, lightly touching it with a finger. 'I didn't know you were doing this, otherwise I would have got you one.'
'Nah. You deserve to stand out.'
Cas dazzled him with a smile and took his hands.
'Kiss for the camera,' Mary said, holding up her phone.
' Mom,' Dean groaned, blushing.
But Cas was happy to do it, and softly pressed his lips to Dean's, for the benefit of the camera.
Mary insisted on taking many more photos, until Dean insisted that it was time to go.
'Do you guys know when you'll be back?' Mary asked.
Dean shrugged. 'Sometime tomorrow afternoon.'
'We'll be back for dinner,' Cas confirmed.
'Okay, well, you go and have fun,' she beamed, finally putting away her camera to look at them with her own teary eyes. 'So grown up,' she said, reaching up to pinch Dean's cheek, and straighten Cas's tie. 'Go, get out of here.'
'Aw, Mom,' Dean said. He gave her a kiss on the cheek, and a quick hug.
Mary pushed him away after a moment. 'Stop, I'm gonna get your nice jacket all wet,' she said, wiping her cheeks.
'Okay, okay, we're going,' said Dean. He turned back to Cas and offered his arm. 'Come on, your chariot awaits.'
Cas took his arm and went out to the Impala with him.
Dean had already packed their bags for the night. He had also spent the night before cleaning the car and making her gleam. It was just as much her night as it was theirs, he insisted.
The school had rented a room at the local country club, and when they got there, they saw that the entrance had been decorated and a red carpet had been rolled out along the path leading up to the door.
There were already students lining up to go inside, in a parade of bright colours.
Dean pulled in to the queue of vehicles waiting to drop off their students, and jumped when someone knocked on his window.
'Valet service,' the man offered, as Dean rolled down the window.
Dean hesitated. 'Sure,' he said, 'just be careful.'
They both got out of the car, and Dean anxiously watched the Impala over his shoulder.
'The parking lot is just around the corner, we can go and check on her later,' Cas offered, squeezing Dean's hand.
Dean turned back to him and kissed his cheek. 'You're sweet, but she'll be fine.'
They walked together up the path, and found Jo along the way, arm in arm with Aaron, the captain of the track team.
'You look beautiful,' Cas said to her.
She had set her hair in soft curls and was wearing a sweeping forget-me-not blue dress.
'Thanks,' she grinned. 'You two clean up pretty good too.'
'I didn't know this was a thing,' Dean said, waving a hand between Jo and Aaron.
Jo tucked a lock of hair behind her ear, pink spots appearing on her cheeks. 'It's new,' she said, looking up at Aaron, who looked exceedingly pleased with himself. 'And you made going out with a track guy so fun, I thought I'd try it myself.'
They moved up the line for the entrance, and came across Crowley, who dressed all in black and hadn't brought a date.
'I thought I'd see who's available by the end of the night,' he smirked.
Dean rolled his eyes.
Once inside, they were directed to a fancy room that had round tables set out, all laden with cutlery. They found Kevin and Channing already sitting at a table, wearing matching silver outfits, and they didn't stop kissing when the seats around them filled.
Dean couldn't keep his eyes off Cas throughout dinner. It hit him that everything about Cas was perfect, and Dean couldn't stop touching him. Stroking his face, or running a hand through his hair.
'Jeez, Dean, you're worse than Kevin,' Jo laughed.
'So what if I am,' said Dean, running a finger along Cas's jaw.
Cas smiled. 'I don't mind,' he said quietly, taking Dean's hand and kissing it. He then reached out and wiped sauce from the corner of Dean's mouth. 'Though, you should pay attention to what you're eating,' he chuckled.
Dean leaned over and whispered in his ear, 'I'll pay attention to what I'm eating later.'
Cas bit his lip and blushed, and Dean was satisfied to see him drop a hand to his lap to cover himself. He was forced to stare at the cheesecake in front of him, pretending to be fascinated by the intricate chocolate decorations on it.
Finally, dinner was finished, and they were all asked to wait outside while the tables were removed from the room.
While they were waiting, Alfie went around with his camera, and Dean let him take pictures of him and Cas.
'Nice of you to stand still for a change,' Alfie said.
'Well, I got some arm candy to take a good picture with,' he grinned.
Alfie took pictures of Jo and Aaron, and Kevin and Channing. Then they all took a group photo with Crowley, so he wouldn't be left out.
At last, they were allowed back inside, where a small stage and dance floor had been set up, with long tables of drinks along one of the walls.
The lights had been darkened, and a DJ had already begun playing music.
Crowley straightened his tie and fixed his hair. 'Let's get the party started,' he said, winking at Dean and prowling off to the dance floor.
'Do you want to dance, or do you want a drink first?' Dean asked Cas.
'I'd like to dance,' Cas smiled, taking Dean's hand and leading him to the floor.
The boot made it difficult, and he wasn't very graceful, but Dean loved dancing with him, and watching the joy on his face.
Unlike their Homecoming dance, this was real, and it delighted Dean that he wouldn't have to let go of Cas at the end of the night.
None of the drinks were supposed to be alcoholic, but it came as no surprise when someone spiked the bowl of punch. Dean suspected Crowley, but said nothing, and enjoyed a few drinks.
Cas was still wary of alcohol, after Halloween, and only had a few sips of the punch before switching to something non alcoholic.
After about an hour of dancing and music, the DJ announced that it was time to reveal the results of the vote. The music was turned off, and the prom committee climbed onto the stage, switching on the microphone. They placed two plastic crowns on a decorated table and everyone turned their attention to the stage.
'All right, everyone,' one of the girls on the cheer squad said into the microphone, 'the moment we've been waiting for. First of all, let's see who our king will be.' Someone else handed her a golden envelope.
She opened the envelope and smiled widely. 'Our prom king this year will be… Cas Novak!'
Cas's jaw dropped open as everyone applauded him.
'Go on!' Dean grinned, nudging him forward.
Cas glanced back at him, but made his way to the stage, climbing up the steps awkwardly with his boot. They had to get someone tall to put the crown and sash on him, but once they were on, he smiled and stood up straight. Dean's heart jumped to his throat as he watched. It was only a plastic crown, but Cas was radiant with it on.
Jo cheered and whooped from where she was standing with Aaron, who was also jumping up and down.
'Congratulations, Cas!' the girl on stage said into the microphone. 'Is there anything you'd like to say to your royal subjects?'
Cas looked out at them all, smiled, and nodded. The girl stepped aside, and Cas approached the microphone, adjusting it for his height.
'Hello,' he said into it. 'I'm not very good with - with speeches or words… But I wanted to say - I wanted to thank you all for - for being so kind, and so welcoming. I've been to a lot of schools, but… I've never felt so accepted as I have here. You made my senior year the best it could be, and even though I was only here for a year, if anyone asks me what school I went to, I'll be proud to say Lawrence High.'
Everyone clapped and cheered for him again, and he stepped back from the microphone, beaming.
The girl pulled the microphone back to her height. 'Thank you for that, Cas,' she said. 'Now, let's see who our queen is.'
She was handed another envelope, and she giggled when she opened it. 'And the queen is… Dean Winchester!'
Dean burst into laughter and jumped up on stage, leaping the steps two at a time. He took the crown and placed it on his head, then strode over to Cas and kissed him, much to the delight of the crowd. They cheered and whistled, and Dean felt Cas smile as they kissed.
When Dean finally pulled away from Cas, he grinned at the girl. 'All right, you got what you wanted, who's the real queen?' he laughed.
She went back to the microphone. 'Okay, okay, the real queen is Kelly Kline!'
Kelly stepped up onto the stage, and Dean crowned her with a flourish and dramatic bow, then blew a kiss to Cas before jumping down.
Kelly too made a quick speech, thanking her friends, and complimenting the decorations.
Then she and Cas had a dance while Alfie walked around taking pictures.
Dean watched him, so proud he thought his heart might burst. He was so happy that he didn't even care that Alfie took a picture of him gazing adoringly at Cas.
After his dance with Kelly, Cas returned to Dean and pulled him back to the dance floor.
As the night wore on, they became more and more dishevelled. Dean rolled up his sleeves and loosened his tie, and Cas ended up with several of his shirt buttons undone. They lost track of Crowley, but Dean danced several times with Jo, and even convinced Kevin to dance with him.
Finally, the DJ announced that it was almost the end of the night. Cas and Kelly returned their crowns and sashes to the prom committee, and the students began to trickle out of the building.
Dean breathed in the fresh air, holding Cas's hand.
'You guy coming to the after party?' Jo asked, running into them just outside the door.
'Nah, we got our own after party to get to,' Dean grinned.
Jo rolled her eyes. 'Don't keep your neighbours awake,' she said, moving away with Aaron.
'No promises,' Dean called after her. Then he turned to Cas and kissed him. 'Let's get outta here.'
They waited for the Impala to be brought around, and climbed in.
The closer to the hotel they got, the faster Dean's heart raced.
'I can't wait to get my hands on you,' he murmured.
Cas didn't answer, he just ran a hand up and down Dean's thigh.
The hotel wasn't far, and Dean quickly found a parking spot near the door.
Cas checked them in and grabbed their room key. When they got in the elevator, they were alone, and Cas couldn't take it anymore. He reached for Dean and pushed him up against the wall of the elevator, pressing their bodies together and parting Dean's lips with his tongue.
Dean grabbed him by the hips, tingling from his toes to his fingertips.
It seemed like only moments before they reached their floor, and Cas was all but dragging Dean to their room.
Once inside, they threw down their bags, and Cas didn't even switch the lights on before he was tugging at Dean's clothes.
'Cas - Cas, slow down,' Dean laughed, catching hold of Cas's hands.
The only light in the room came from the street lamps outside. In it, Dean could see the flush in Cas's cheeks, his mouth slightly parted and eyes so bright Dean was almost drawn back in by them.
'Sorry,' Cas said, slightly breathless.
'No, it's okay, I appreciate the enthusiasm,' Dean grinned. 'We just - uh - we gotta do some prep work.'
'Right.'
Now that they were finally here, Dean was beginning to feel nervous. He switched on the lamp on the bedside table to make sure they had everything they needed, and as he spread a towel over the bed, he looked up at Cas. He was taking off his jacket and tie, and made a small sigh as he did so. Dean smiled, the knot in his stomach loosening.
He started undoing the buttons on his own shirt, admiring the smooth skin on Cas's back as he did so. With his shirt on the ground, he moved over to Cas and pressed soft kisses to his shoulder, eliciting a shiver. Cas turned around and wrapped his arms around Dean's waist, kissing his neck and nibbling at his earlobe. Dean's hands went to Cas's head, the thick dark hair soft in his fingers.
They moved back towards the bed, and Dean stripped off his pants. It was a little more awkward for Cas, as he had to unstrap his boot before he could take his pants off. But then he was finally naked, and Dean openly stared, letting his eyes trail all the way down from Cas's face, to his chest, his stomach, and further. He moved towards Dean. His limp was all but gone, but he was still careful with the leg. He put a hand to Dean's chest and gently pushed him down onto the bed, cupping his face and kissing him before joining him.
Dean lay back, Cas positioned between his legs, and let his fingers wander over Cas's warm, taut skin.
Cas's tongue was everywhere, at the soft skin behind Dean's ear, across his jaw, then delicately circling one of his nipples, but then Dean felt Cas hesitate.
'W-what's up?' Dean said breathlessly.
Cas shook his head. 'I - um - can we have the lights off?'
'Oh. Yeah, of course.' Dean reached over and switched off the lights, but he sat up and put a hand on Cas's shoulder. If Cas was already overwhelmed, he wasn't sure they should keep going. 'Hey, we don't have to do this,' he said softly. 'We could do something else, or nothing at all.'
'No, I want to,' Cas insisted. 'I'm just nervous.'
Dean kissed him softly. 'You can stop anytime you want,' he murmured.
'I know,' said Cas, and Dean could see him smile in the dim light from outside.
Cas pushed Dean back down and resumed his kissing.
Dean's skin felt like fire, and soon he could think of nothing other than what Cas would feel like inside him.
At last, Cas reached for the lube, and Dean's heart pounded.
Cas started with finger first, slowly and gently, leaning over Dean, so he could watch his face. A smile tugged at his lips as Dean moaned and clenched his fists. He leaned over and whispered in Dean's ear. 'Are you ready?'
Dean nodded. 'Y-yes,' he stammered, his body screaming the same.
Again, slowly and carefully, Cas slid himself in.
Dean let out a huge, shuddering gasp, and Cas's head dropped to Dean's shoulder, muffling the cry that escaped his mouth.
Dean trembled underneath him, but Cas had frozen.
'C-Cas,' Dean forced out, making himself breathe evenly as well as he could. 'Are - are - you - o-o-okay?'
'It - it's a lot of sensation,' Cas mumbled.
'Do y-you need to stop?'
'No.'
'Then can you - can you m-move?' Dean said, with a short laugh.
The laugh seemed to be what Cas needed and he chuckled quietly as well. 'Yes.'
He rocked his hips and Dean gasped again.
Cas found his rhythm, and before long, Dean was seeing stars. His brain turned to mush and he couldn't have said what came out of his mouth. He'd used his own fingers and an old toothbrush, long since discarded, on himself before, but this was entirely different. This was like fireworks underwater. He could barely breathe, but he didn't care. He clutched at Cas, urging him on, feeling the hot pleasure building inside him. His whole body tensed, his back arched, and head pressed back against the pillow. Cas was trembling as he too got closer, his breath ragged.
Dean's fingernails dug into Cas and the pressure inside him released. Like an explosion, it ripped through him in waves, shuddering through his whole body, and he barely felt it as Cas went rigid and filled him, wet and warm.
They lay where they were for a while, breathing heavily, until Cas finally rolled off of Dean, onto the bed beside him.
Without Cas's warmth, Dean shivered, but he couldn't move. All the strength in his body was gone and he felt like melted pudding, limp on the towel.
'Are you all right?' Cas asked anxiously.
Dean couldn't speak, but he smiled and gave Cas a weak thumbs up.
Cas shuffled closer and held Dean in his arms while he recovered. He was sweaty, and Dean could hear his heart beating, but Dean breathed him in.
'How are you doing?' Dean asked quietly, after he'd pulled himself together enough to speak.
Cas kissed him softly. 'I'm all right,' he said. 'I'm just worried about you.'
Dean looked up at him and chuckled at the concern on his face. 'I'm perfect,' he said. 'I promise.'
Cas relaxed. 'Can I get you anything?'
Dean laughed at that. 'You're sweet to ask. I could do with a drink.'
Cas obliged, getting up to grab something from the minibar.
'Whoa, hey, those are expensive,' Dean protested. 'I meant maybe something from the vending machine outside.' But Cas just tutted and brought him a bottle of apple juice.
'Thanks.' Dean's hands were still shaky, so Cas took the bottle back and opened it for him.
'Are you sure you're okay?' Cas asked.
Dean rolled his eyes, but he glowed inside when he realised that Cas wanted to take care of him.
Dean gulped down some of the apple juice. 'Now that you mention it, I think we should shower.'
Cas nodded seriously and switched on the light.
Dean swung his legs over the edge of the bed, but stumbled on weak knees as he did so. Cas caught hold of him and helped steady to him.
Dean laughed, slightly giddy. His body throbbed and he felt the ache. He didn't mind. It was a good ache. He let Cas hold into him all the way to the bathroom, and scrub his back in the shower.
By the time he had showered and put his pajamas on, he was almost back to normal, if worn out. But he was surprised to find he was also very hungry. He pulled out his phone to order some food.
'You want anything?' Dean asked.
Cas picked up the room service menu instead. 'I'll get us something,' he said.
'Oh, are you sure?' Dean asked. 'I was going to-'
'You were going to get breakfast,' Cas said firmly, and annoyance flashed across his face. 'Dean, I understand you don't want me to feel like you want my money, or something, but I'd like you to be comfortable with me buying you things.'
Dean's eyebrows shot up.
Cas's expression softened again. 'I appreciate it, really, but you're my boyfriend. I want to make you feel special.'
Dean felt his cheeks warm. 'You don't have to buy me stuff for that,' he said, 'but I get your point. I'll try, just- just don't go overboard, okay?'
'I'll try,' Cas smiled. He passed Dean the menu and insisted he order whatever he wanted, regardless of the price.
They each ordered a burger and fries, and some root beer, and Cas collected it at the door.
As soon as the food was gone, Dean's eyelids began to droop, so Cas tidied away the dishes and switched off the lights. They climbed into bed together, sinking into the soft mattress.
Warm, comfortable, and curled up in Cas's arms, Dean was asleep in moments with a smile on his face.
