Chapter 1: Broken
The Loud family of Royal Woods loved their family vehicle Vanzilla. It had taken Rita and Lynn Sr. to the hospital when they had their kids. And brought each kid home for the first time. It took the family to school, work, fun places, and even across the country.
But just like all cars, Vanzilla had broken down a couple times. And there were times where the Louds came close to getting a new van but they just couldn't let go of Vanzilla.
Then one day, the family was on their home from the movies.
"That movie was awesome." said Lincoln.
"I think ours was better." Lola piped up.
The family had split up and saw two different films, Lynn Sr., Lincoln, Lori, Luna, Lynn Jr., and Lana saw an action movie. While Rita, Leni, Luan, Lucy, Lola, Lisa, and Lily saw a fantasy movie. But as they were driving down the road, Vanzilla started to sputter.
"Oh no, not again." Rita complained.
"Don't worry, I can take care of it." Lynn Sr. assured.
He pulled off the road, and stopped the van. He got out and popped the hood, and Lana quickly got out to help.
"This is like the 5th time Vanzilla's broken down this week." said Leni.
"I know." agreed Luna.
"Of course, this means Vanzilla is another step closer to breaking down completely." Lisa piped up.
"I'm afraid you're right kids, but you know your father. He'll never let Vanzilla go." Rita told them.
Lynn Sr. and Lana tried to fix the problem, but they weren't able to. They ended up having to call a tow truck, and the Louds had to get towed to a garage.
At the garage a mechanic looked at Vanzilla, and then came up to Lynn Sr. and Rita. "Well it's not looking good." the mechanic told them. Lynn Sr. looked worried, while Rita seemed understanding.
"So what's the damage?" Lynn Sr. asked.
The mechanic explained the issues, and that it would be very expensive to repair. Before Lynn Sr. could say anything, Rita quickly spoke up.
"We'll think about it. Do you think you could tow us to our house?"
Luckily the mechanic could spare a worker to do that.
Back at the house, Lynn Sr. and Lana worked on Vanzilla.
"How's it looking, Dad?" Lana wanted to know.
"I think I may have fixed the issue. Try starting it."
Lana did, but the engine wouldn't turn over. Both of them groaned. Rita then stepped outside.
"Honey, are you going to get dinner started soon? It's 4:30."
"I'll be there in a minute, hon. Lana and I are getting close to a breakthrough."
"Yeah, Mom. Vanzilla needs us." added Lana.
"Okay."
And she went back inside the house.
"They're gonna be out there for a while."
She then pulled out her cell phone, and called for pizza.
When it arrived, all the Loud kids immediately grabbed some slices.
"Pizza for dinner? What's the occasion, Mom?" asked Lincoln.
"Your father's been busy working on Vanzilla so I went ahead and got us dinner."
"They're still working on it?" Lori wondered.
"Yep."
"Great more pizza for us." Lola replied.
She reached for another piece, but Rita stopped her.
"Leave some for Lana and your father."
"I don't know why Father and Lana are even trying." Lisa piped up.
"Yeah, Vanzilla's just about shot." Lori added.
"I know, but you know how they feel about Vanzilla." Rita replied.
"It's the first stage." Lucy mentioned.
Everyone looked at her.
"I've been observing Vanzilla lately. And it's on its' last legs or tires to be more accurate."
"She's got a point." Leni agreed.
"And Lana and Dad are facing the first stage of grief: denial."
"She's right." Lynn confirmed.
"She's always reading about it."
Just then, Lynn Sr. and Lana came in.
"How's Vanzilla doing?" asked Luan.
"We still have a lot of work to do. But we're just taking a small break." Lynn Sr. told.
"Hope you guys saved a couple slices of pepperoni for me." Lana hoped.
"Here you go, sis." said Luna, pushing the box over to her.
The two ate their pizza slices, drank their drinks, and then went back outside.
"(Sighs), you were right, Lucy." Rita told.
"Your father and Lana are in denial."
