Surviving the Flames – Ch.1
Sorry if this sucks, was kind of rushed.
It was 9 pm when they got the call.
Engine 19, ladder 19, aid car 19. Structure fire at 613 Harper Lane.
"Oh shit," Andy said and rushed to slide down the fire pole.
"What? What is it, Andy?" Maya asked when she reached the floor, watching Andy rush to get her turnouts on. "She looked at Andy's face and saw the worry. "Andy?"
Andy didn't say anything. She just got in the engine.
"Andy, talk to me." Andy looked at Maya.
"That's Meredith Grey's house," Andy told her, getting her gloves and helmet on, wanting to be ready to get in the house as soon as possible.
Maya looked shocked and began to drive faster. "It's going to be okay, Andy. I'm sure she got out."
"If the kids are home she'd probably be running in and out of the house." Andy sighed. "She's amazing and will do anything for her kids."
Maya looked at Andy again and saw the tears forming in her eyes. "Andy, I know this is hard. I know that they're important to you. But right now, you need to focus on being a firefighter." Maya told her and she heard Andy whisper.
"Okay."
"We're two minutes out," Maya told her, and they could both see the smoke now. "Shit. The smoke is black."
Andy was looking out of the window. She saw the smoke before Maya told her, so she just nodded. She pulled out her phone and sent a text to Maggie and Amelia.
"Alright, Herrera," Andy looked at Beckett. "Can I trust you to handle yourself during search and rescue?" Andy nodded. "Alright, take Montgomery, Gibson and Hughes. Split into pairs. You don't have much time so be careful, okay?" Andy nodded again and quickly exited the truck. She rushed to the front of the house when she saw Bailey running out.
"Bailey!" Andy shouted. ran over to him and bent down. "Are you alright? Where's your mom?"
"She's still in the house," Bailey told her, trying to hold in his tears.
Andy nodded. "Alright, Bay. Here's what I need you to do. I need you to go and stand by our aid car, okay?" Bailey nodded and walked over to the aid car with Andy. Coughing as he did. "Please get him some O2 and a blanket," Andy asked. Theo. Theo nodded.
Andy grabbed Vic and they rushed up the stairs. Andy begins to call out. "Meredith! Zola! Ellis!" Andy called. "Can anyone hear me?"
Andy and Vic had searched the first couple of rooms on the second floor and weren't having luck finding the kids or Meredith. Meredith's bedroom. "Hughes. The second room on the right." Hughes and Andy walked to the door and called out, but no one answered. Andy grabbed the door handle and opened the door. "Meredith? Kids? Are you in here?" Andy asked and heard coughing seconds later. "Oh god." Andy breathed out and walked further into the room.
"We're in the closet!" Andy heard Meredith shout.
Andy and Vic looked at each other and rushed towards the closet. Andy's heart sank when she saw that Ellis and Zola were unconscious and Meredith was coughing nonstop. "Alright, we need to get you all out. Right now. Meredith, can you stand?" Meredith nodded. Vic, you take Zola. I've got Meredith and Ellis." Vic nodded and picked Zola up and rushed out of the room. Andy wasn't far behind her. Ellis was cradled in Andy's left arm while Andy wrapped her right arm around Meredith and helped lead her out of the house.
"Andy, are the kids going to be okay?" Meredith asked between her coughs.
Andy gulped. "Mer, we need to get outside and then we'll get you all checked out." Andy felt Meredith nod. Once they were out of the house Vic and Andy rushed the kids and Meredith to the aid car and got them on oxygen. Andy was concerned about the symptoms they were showing. Andy was watching Meredith and could see that her breathing was raspy. Andy looked at Vic who was checking out Zola and Maya who was checking out Ellis. All three were showing signs of smoke inhalation. Andy looked over to Theo and Bailey. She was relieved when she saw that he was breathing okay and was being picked up by Maggie. She watched him cuddle into Maggie and she smiled before turning her focus back on Meredith. "Alright, I think we need to get them to the hospital. I want this smoke inhalation taken care of." Andy told Maya and Vic. They nodded and moved the family over to the aid car. Andy knew it was against the rules to load the aid car up but decided they all needed to be monitored and couldn't wait for another aid car to come.
"Amelia, Maggie, Winston. Do you mind taking Bailey to the hospital? We'd take him too, but we can't load up the ambulance with four fire victims and he seems okay."
Amelia nodded and picked Bailey up hugged him. "We'll meet you at the hospital," Maggie told her, hand on Bailey's back.
Andy nodded and loaded Zola, Ellis and Meredith into the aid car. Meredith was still coughing. Vic and Andy looked at each other as Maya jumped into the driver's seat, turned the sirens on, and began the drive to Grey Sloan.
"Vic, how are the kids?" Andy asked while she focused on Meredith.
"They seem stable right now. But I'm worried they passed out due to smoke inhalation. There are also burns on their arms. They don't look too serious but it's still concerning that they haven't woken up yet."
Meredith opened her eyes. "What do they look like?" Meredith asked, looking at Andy.
"They're first-degree burns, Mer. I promise." Andy brought the O2 mask back up to Meredith's face, concerned that she was starting to see that Meredith was short of breath. "Mer, slow breath's okay?" Meredith nodded and leaned back, and Andy looked over her. Meredith's skin was starting to get pale and she was still coughing. "Mer, how's your chest? Is it hurting?" Andy watched Meredith nod her head. "Shit. Maya, drive faster please." Andy begged. Vic helped Andy connect the heart monitor to Meredith and when she saw her irregular heartbeat, her worry grew.
Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit. Please be okay. Please be okay. She needs to be okay.
