Chapter 1: Greetings
This is very important: Novels and Future Arcs from the Anime spoilers are below. This story is filled with Spoilers so please be aware of that. I'd advise you all to go and read Webnovel until Arc 6 and watch all the anime's episodes along with the OVA's
Just before Emilia and her Camp entered the great water-gate city to meet with Anastasia, a bright light illuminated, blinding them.
Opening her eyes, Emilia quickly noticed that she was sitting in a dark, dimly lit room by a giant square on the wall in front of her.
"What...wha!?"
The half-elf princess looked around her to find various other chairs with more people she recognized.
"T' fuck is happening, my amazin' self wasn't in 'ere!"
"Calm down Garf!"
Otto and Garfiel scanned their surroundings and found others beside them.
"Ram!?"
The pink haired maid looked around, finding her master sitting idly with a confused look on his face.
"Hmmmm, this seems reaaaaally interesting."
The clown magician looked around the room at the other gathered Camps sitting in their own sections of the room.
They all seemed calm and exceedingly bored having just been teleported, he noted.
"Felt-chan, you're here?" Emilia smiled at the little girl who stole her insignia.
The blonde girl waved at her and smiled cheekily.
"Hey there big sis! I was taken here just like you were."
Emilia looked at the dashing red haired knight sitting beside the little princess.
"Greetings, Emilia-sama. Nice to see you again."
"Nice to see you too, Reinhard."
Emilia smiled at the polite young man, feeling a little more assured she and her friends are safe in his presence.
"Subaru wake up, I suppose!"
All eyes turned to the distressed little girl as she lightly shook the unconscious black haired young man next to her.
"Betty...! What's wrong with Subaru!?"
Emilia immediately moved to sit beside the sleeping form of her knight and clutched his hand to check his vitals.
He was alive.
"He's not waking up, I suppose."
Emilia and Beatrice looked at the boy with alarm, as worry overcame them.
"Do not panic over Subaru-dono, he will be just fine."
Emilia looked up and found a smiling old man in a butler uniform.
"Wilhelm-san! You're here as well!"
The old man nodded and looked beside him.
"Heya! Don't worry about Natsuki-kun he will be fyine!"
A cute cat boy waved from beside the butler and smiled down at Emilia's row.
Emilia looked beside the suspiciously cute boy and found the green haired duchess that had helped her and Subaru so much.
"Crusch-san..." Awkwardly and yet curiously, Emilia looked at the girl with sympathy and guilt.
Only she was surprised when the smile said girl gave back was unwaveringly confident.
"No need to be alarmed, Emilia. It seems whoever brought us here managed to return my memories to me."
Emilia's eyes let up with happiness at the news.
"It seems that whoever brought us here is more powerful than the Sword Saint himself, huh?"
A cheerful voice called the attention of the two, revealing the purple haired faction leader, Anastasia with her mercenary team and her purple haired knight sitting beside her.
"Julius, This wasn't a move from your Camps leader right?" A one armed helmet wearing man called out from his side of the room where he sat beside the bored fiery looking woman.
Julius simply shook his head elegantly. "This wasn't Anastasia-sama's doing. Whatever brought us to this place, it wasn't any of us."
While the others continued conversing amongst one another. Emilia and Beatrice sat next to Subaru, each holding one hand. Wondering why he hadn't woken up.
"Rem!"
Everyone looked up to see Ram hugging a blue twin that looked just like her. That was the girl Subaru had cried over and said they'd all forgotten.
Only she was conscious. And she looked confused.
Before anyone knew it, the memories of this blue haired girl returned where they belonged.
And now everyone remembered the girl Natsuki Subaru had fought so hard to protect.
"Holy Shit! Rem! I'm sorry! My amazin' self forgot 'bout you."
Garfiel was blushing hard as he looked at the blue haired girl.
Ram hugged her little sister, while crying tears of happiness mixed with guilt.
"It's okay onee-san." Rem hugged her little sister back and patted her head softly.
All she remembered was fighting Gluttony.
Rem looked around, settling her eyes on Crusch and smiled warmly.
The green haired lady smirked and nodded, sending a clear message the two would talk about that attack.
Rem eased her sister out of her embrace, and walked towards a certain someone she has been waiting to meet with. Someone very dear to her.
"Hello Emilia-sama, Beatrice-sama. I hope you're doing well."
Emilia looked at her with shock and surprise. "Rem-rin... I remember you, I remember now! Subaru has been fighting sooo hard to get your memories back."
Rem smiled at the teary eyed elf girl. "My hero is always working hard to save everyone." The maid was happy that she was so important to the boy. Looking at his unconscious innocent face with a warm, and proud smile.
She wanted to look at him and be closer to him. Since his two sides were occupied by Beatrice and Emilia. Rem sat down right behind the selfless hero.
As everyone sat in silence unaware of what to do, the screen suddenly buzzed and changed its colors.
"What is..."
Emilia and everyone around her gazed with eyes wide open, astonished as they watched what seemed to be a window lighting up in front of them.
The square in front of them changed to show a huge green field.
In the middle of the field, was the familiar black haired knight.
"Subaru-kun!"
"Subaru?"
"How long are you going to fight for them?"
"Who is that?" Otto looked scared as he watched the strange vision on the window, showing his friend in a frightening position.
"How long are you willing… to endure this pain?" Subaru was shown bleeding all over. As he fell on his knees with his head hung low, a small grunt of pain came out of him.
"Subaru!?" Emilia gripped her knight's hand and watched with an expression of horror.
"Natsuki Subaru... you are disgusting." Bodies were shown all around him.
"This is..." Julius couldn't keep his eyes open at the scene.
"...Subaru-dono." Wilhelm vice gripped his arm chair as he watched the torture the young man endures.
"You are worthless."
"Stop!" Beatrice latched onto her contractor's hand and cried out as she watched the voice insulting him over and over.
"You are weak."
"Subaru-kun..." Rem watched with a horrified face. Just what was he going through?
"They died because of your incompetence."
"What is the meaning of this?" Crusch could not contain herself as she watched the gruesome way this young hero was put down again and again.
"They died because of your uselessness." The window began to move. Showing the various dead bodies around the kneeling young man as he cried over them with his face hidden. Horrifying images were displayed of dead royal selection candidates and their Camps.
"Why.." Reinhard looked at the mass of cadavers around his friend with horror and gut wrenching guilt. It didn't help that his lady was dead in the window's vision as well.
"A child that keeps running because he dares not look back. Afraid of his own mistakes. Committing sin after sin with nothing but failure to show for it." A figure of pure black was shown standing in front of the beaten Subaru. A dark, nasty smirk on his abhorrent face.
"No… How?" Everyone gazed at Roswaal as he looked aghast by the figure before Subaru.
"Who is that?" Julius asked in a serious voice as he clearly saw through the clown's facade. Wanting to know the identity behind the one torturing Subaru.
Roswaal remained silent, his eyes fixated at the window. He was shaking.
Everyone was unnerved by this. If the greatest magi was scared of this guy, what did that mean for Subaru?
The trio of girls around Subaru inched closer to the sleeping boy and looked at the screen with him in center view, worried.
"You're not a hero." The figure leaned down and stared him in the eye.
"You barely even qualify as a person, Sage."
Subaru slowly raised his head and met the deranged madman drenched in darkness with an intense glare of hatred and determination.
Everyone was scared of how Subaru looked at the man. Despite how powerless the boy was. Those eyes were unmatched in sharpness. Although never directed towards them. This will be the first of many times they see that glare.
"Big bro is looking scary." Felt was at awe as she saw the amazing will Subaru had to stand against the demon in front of him and glare right back. Wounds in all.
"No matter what it takes..." Subaru spoke in a low and determined tone. He picked up a small dagger that was laying beside him and glared back at the towering black Demon.
"Haha! What's that puny thing going to do?" Priscilla laughed in amusement at the feeble attempt made by this pathetic boy.
"Hmph, that's just a stupid way to die."
Garfiel looked up at the purple haired candidate with a glare of intense anger.
"Oi! Ya don't get to talk 'bout my Cap'n like that, ya hear!"
As he glared at the girl he noticed Anastasia's eyes suddenly widen in shock at the window.
Garfiel turned back and collapsed to the ground due to what he saw.
"Oi… Oi, Oi! Wait! NO!" Garfiel screamed.
"Why..." Emilia asked, filled with heartbreak.
On screen, Subaru had stabbed himself in the neck with the dagger. He remained standing and glaring at the ever smirking demon.
" I swear...
I will...
defeat you."
as his eyes closed... darkness overtook him.
Subaru had died.
"What..." a shaken Otto asked but couldn't continue.
What they all saw shook their cores.
What they were seeing was so mind numbing and brutal.
Why?
"Subaru-kun, why.."
Emilia hugged the sleeping boy and felt nothing but relief at his beating heart.
Beside her, her knight was still alive. What she had seen on the screen was just an illusion, she thought.

The voice of someone sounded out as the scene on the window changed. It turned to a dark black void.
"Hmmm, didn't he kill himself just now? I don't really see how he will save us."
Anastasia unnerved the people around her as she spoke in a curious child like manner, as if the scene she watched didn't disturb her in the slightest.
"Hmph! What a farce this is! I want to return to mine carriage this instant."
Everyone was confused, some were angry, a few heartbroken. But, they all agreed that this place was not going to let them leave before showing them something important.
"Your body was among those around Natsuki-sama. I'd advise that you watch this aspersion and learn from it."
Priscilla laughed and looked down at the noble looking Crusch with a look of pure disdain.
"Calling him 'sama' now? You've been charmed by a mere common fool that brought nothing but shame and humiliation on his own master. A filthy dog that killed himself because he didn't want to face a monster."
Priscilla leaned down to growl dangerously at the silent and calm Crusch.
"I would rather be dead than be saved by such a weakling." Priscilla sat down and smirked at all the glares she got.
Crusch just smirked, letting out a small scoff.
"Natsuki-sama has a habit of surprising those who doubt him."
"Ohh you believe he had a plan when fighting that monster?"
Crusch looked at the curious Anastasia.
"Didn't you see how confident he looked? He wouldn't swear to stop that demon just to kill himself afterwards."
"But the wound looked real, Crusch-sama." Felix gave his expert opinion. He appeared to be angry for some reason.
Those in the Camp closer to the boy had their heads low as they thought about all the memories they had shared with him. They saw their innermost member die. Illusion or not, the thought alone was hard to swallow.
They were having none of these talks.
Otto was so angry that his best friend was facing something like that on his own. After all, Subaru should know by now that he can rely on others. He wanted to get up and punch him square in the jaw to knock him back to his senses.
Garfiel was so scared and shaken by the death he saw on screen. His inability to instantly jump into action and save his captain. The idea of failing as Subaru's shield tormented him.
Emilia looked up from Subaru's chest and found the window above her changing once again.
Everyone fell silent and watched.
"This is your story, isn't it Subaru-kun?" Roswaal looked on with an unreadable expression.
Roswaal was once beaten by that same demon.
He knew that Subaru would remain stubborn to defeat him.
"What would it take to crush your will? Just when will you break and stop walking through hell?" Roswaal held his head low as he regretted not saving the boy that held his salvation. He should've never burned the gospel.
"It's time for the beginning of this arrogant weakling child's story to be displayed before those he suffered for the most."
The silence in the big room was overwhelming as all listened and looked on at the ever changing window.
"Natsuki Subaru, the self-proclaimed knight."
Anastasia and Priscilla snorted at the title shown on the screen as they remembered the royal humiliation he was subjugated too.
Julius looked down a bit, an action noticed by his red haired friend.
Those in the Emilia camp were confused as to why people were laughing at the title. They saw Emilia looking downtrodden, filled with guilt. It began to set in that this was no mere illusion.
" First arc. Begin."
The multiple Camps competing in the royal selection watched the supposed story of the self proclaimed knight. Some with bewilderment, some with excitement, and some with fear of what they will see.
Others found it either amusing, boring, or possibly insightful to see what was so special about this boy.
And to each and every single one of them...
Only horror and despair awaited.
