It was midnight but Harry James Potter could not sleep, he was going to Hogwarts soon. While he was excited, he wished his parents were here with him. "I wish I had my mom or dad. Both would be cool too," Harry said to himself as he drifted off to sleep.

James Potter woke up with a gasp. He was alive. How was he alive? James let out a shaky breath and looked around him. He was on a dark street. It was late.

"Did I really die? Or was that all a dream?" he muttered, stretching before walking down the street to see if he could find out what happened.

The sun was rising but James still hadn't found anyone. What would he say to them anyway? 'I think I came back from the dead; I need help finding out if my son is still alive.' He sighed. It sounded crazy in his head.

"What would Lily say?" he asked himself as he walked up to the door of a house and knocked. He stood there waiting, just as he'd done many times before. He heard the door unlocked and open.

"Hello?" the man at the door asked and James knew that voice.

"Remus?" James asked slowly. The door opened to Remus Lupin. He was older with graying hair and more scars.

"James? H-how? Who are you?" Remus asked, pointing his wand at James.

"Just me, James," James said, holding up his hands. "I woke up down the street and heard Harry's voice, though he shouldn't have been able to talk. Where is he?"

Remus looked at James skeptically with a bit of longing. It couldn't be James, could it? He was the same age as him which was weird because he died when they were young.

"You heard Harry's voice?" Remus asked, sitting down tensely. James sat down on the chair across from him and nodded slowly.

"Yes, he said he wished he could have his parents. Any parent would be good. How old is he? Where is he?" James asked, standing up. The cottage was small. Only fallen chairs lined the drawing room.

"He's not here. He's with his aunt and uncle and he just turned eleven," Remus answered with a sigh.

"What?! Why is he with them? He should be with Sirius," James said. Shock was on his face. Remus looked at him sadly, beginning to believe it really was James.

"Black is in Azkaban. He betrayed us all," Remus said, looking down. James stared at the werewolf.

"How—" James began, then realization dawned. "Oh! We switched Secret Keepers! It was Peter!"

"Black killed Peter," Remus said, shaking his head. This made James raise an eyebrow.

"You really think Sirius would do such a thing if it kept him from his godson?" James asked, walking to the door. "I'm going to get my son. Then we will free Sirius."

Remus looked at James and sighed.

"Alright, but if you're wrong, don't tell me I didn't warn you," Remus said, standing up.

James didn't blame Remus's attitude right now. He had just seen a friend he long thought dead, of course, he'd be untrusting.

They apparated to No. 4 when suddenly Remus stopped walking and his eyes widened.

"It can't be," he whispered.

"Remus, what is it?" James asked. Remus looked behind the house.

"I think you may be right," Remus said before walking to the back of the house. "You carry on." James took a deep breath before he knocked on the front door.

It was evening so Harry should be eating with everyone. He doubted that, though. Lily's side of the family hated him and Lily, and Harry sounded so sad.

"Harry, get the door," he heard Dursley demand his son. After a few more moments of waiting, the door opened to reveal Dursley, but James was not looking at him, he was looking at his eleven-year-old son.

"You're not allowed to be here!" Dursley said before he made his way to slam the door in James' face. James, however, kept the door open.

"I'm not allowed to be here? What does that even mean? I'm here to pick up my son! Now, let me pass," James said, pushing past the fat man. He saw Harry smile a little but there was a look of confusion on his face.

"Hagrid said you were killed by…" Harry cut off. James nodded at him.

"Yes, but I'm back now. You brought me back, son. Now, where's your stuff? Let's go." Harry nodded excitedly and led him upstairs, leaving a confused Dursley downstairs.

Remus stopped when he saw a rat running to the door. "You," he said, picking up the rat. The rat looked at him with his beady eyes. Remus put the rat down and shook his head when the rat turned into Peter. "You're not allowed to be here!" Remus yelled at the man.

"Remus!" he cried. There was a nervous happiness in his voice. Remus rolled his eyes.

"You lied to us. I'm sorry but I'm taking you in," Remus said, grabbing his old friend and dragging him out of the yard.

James watched Remus drag Peter down the road. He smiled a little, but he had a look of concern. 'Why was Peter here?'

"Are you really my dad?" Harry asked, pulling him from his thoughts. James smiled and nodded.

"I'm going to look after you," Remus said, looking at the owl. "Let's go," he said, picking up the trunk. Harry smiled and followed him out with Hedwig in his hand. James knew that after they got Sirius back, they could be a full family. He could settle on this for now.
