Lab Rats: With A Twist – A Lab Rats Fanfiction…
A/N – This was an idea I had after rewatching Lab Rats this past month, yes I'm inserting my own OC character into the show who is based off me. Each chapter will be an episode with my OC Maria Knight added into it. I always wondered what it would be like if I was in Lab Rats and friends with Leo Dooley and now thanks to fanfiction I'm gonna see how it is. Anyway I hope you enjoy; I wont give to much away but you already know the show if you clicked into this fandom. So I own nothing from Lab Rats or even Might Med (something is referenced from it) I only own my OC Maria Knight. Enjoy!
Chapter 1
Crush Chop & Burn Part 1
Mission Creek High was as boring as ever. My name is Maria Knight, and I was in the ninth grade, almost going to be in tenth grade. I was medium height, with orange-red hair, green eyes, and tan skin. School wasn't my favorite time of day, but it got me away from home, and I got to see my best friend, which brings me back to the fact that school was as dull as ever.
I'm sure you are wondering who my best friend is, and his name is Leo Dooley. Recently, Leo's mother had gotten re-married to some guy (I can't remember the name; Leo only briefly told me about it), so Leo wasn't here. I haven't seen him for almost a week now; I missed my best friend; I felt like I had no one to talk to, and, as I said, school was boring without Leo.
But what I didn't know was that it was all about to change. I waited for the first period at my locker on Thursday morning. As I was at my locker, I wondered if Leo would finally show up today or not. Sighing, I closed my locker after getting my books and leaned against it, lost in thought. I only looked up when I heard a voice yell out in surprise and a bunch of giggles. Looking over, I grinned when I saw none other than Leo finally walk in behind three kids I had never seen. It was odd; the three kids acted like they'd never been to school before, and Leo spoke to them as if he knew them.
I watched as they entered; the girl with Leo grinned, "I can't believe we are at school. I am so excited!" The girl said to Leo as one of the lunch ladies passed her. She oddly hugs the woman. Once the lunch lady gets her to let go and speeds away, the new girl turns to Leo and grins. "My first lunch lady! She smelled like fish sticks!"
Scoffing, I rolled my eyes. Had these three never been to school before? How did they know Leo? Deciding to get some answers, I strolled over to where Leo stood. I decided to sneak up and scare him. It always made me giggle at how easy he was to scare. I heard Leo speak to the girl as I sneaked up behind them. "Do me a favor and try to act like you've seen the world," Leo said with a sigh.
Instead of questioning what Leo meant, I decided to wrap my arms around him and speak. "Hey, Leo!" I say as I hug him; the boy screams and jumps, pushing me off and glaring at me.
"Maria!?" Leo screams in annoyance as I laugh. "I seriously need to get you a bell. What have I told you about sneaking up on me?" Leo wonders as he glares at me.
I giggle, "To not too…but come on, it's fun." I said as I lightly punched him on the shoulder.
"I missed you too," Leo says sarcastically as he sighs.
I laugh more as he rubs his forehead; I love messing with my friend. It was then the girl Leo was with stopped in front of two other girls holding her hand out, the conversation caught my attention. "Hi, I'm Bree! I like ponies and girl things!" The girl, now known as Bree, grins; she didn't get the hint when the two girls looked at her in fright and walked away quickly. She turned to Leo and me, "Did you see that? I made besties! I can't wait to stab them in the back!" Bree exclaimed with wide eyes.
Just as the girls ran off, I sighed and raised an eyebrow at Bree. Looking over at Leo, I could tell he looked at me with worry; I decided to ask, "So? Who are your new friends? Did you replace me while you were gone?" I wondered, half joking as I crossed my arms.
Sighing, Leo says, "Maria, this is my new stepsister, Bree." Leo introduces as he points to Bree; he then says, "Bree, this is my long-time friend Maria," Leo adds as he points to me. Bree and I shake hands. Leo adds, "The tall guy is Adam, and the shorter guy is Chase; they are my stepbrothers." Leo explains with a smile.
"Stepsiblings?" I wondered as I raised my eyebrow. "Oh, right. You said your mother remarried. How was the wedding?" I wondered as I remembered Leo telling me this information.
Leo was about to speak when we heard something snap off. Looking over, I saw the tall guy named Adam holding a locker door; I raised my eyebrow. How in the world did he break that off? I see Leo rush over, forgetting my question only to speak to Adam, no doubt trying to hide something from me. Frowning, I watched as Leo got Adam to join Bree and me, and then the guy Leo had introduced as Chase joined us.
"Adam! Bree! Would you two quit wasting time!?" Chase questioned as he glared at his siblings. "We're not supposed to draw attention to ourselves!" Chase exclaimed in a severe tone.
I was about to open my mouth to ask Leo what he meant when the school bell rang. Suddenly, we all jumped when Chase started screaming like a maniac. Covering his ears, he fell to the ground and started to roll around like a weirdo. Things have taken a strange turn since Leo returned. I watched as Chase kept spinning on the ground. Leo looked at Adam and Bree.
"What's up with crazy!?" Leo wondered, his eyes widening; I wondered the same thing.
Bree sighs as she looks at Leo. "He has ultra-bionic hearing, " Bree explains as if it were obvious.
Raising my eyebrow, I frowned. Bionic hearing? What was that? How did Chase have it? I was surprised they even explained that to Leo with me right there, but I think they forgot I was here. Just as I was about to ask Leo again what Bree meant, the bell finally stopped ringing, and Chase sat up. Sitting up, he gasped for breath and even removed his hands from his ears.
"What was THAT?" Chase wondered as he looked at Leo with confusion.
Sighing, Leo says, "That's called a bell; it rings every forty minutes, eight times a day…" Leo explained with a frown as he eyed Chase with worry. "…. So good luck with that."
With that, Leo says goodbye to me, walking off with Adam, Bree, and Chase to show them a day in the life of his school schedule. Sighing, I shook my head. Something strange was going on with Leo's new stepsiblings, and I was determined to find out. Bionic Hearing? That phrase still baffled me. I wanted to know what Leo knew and was hiding with his siblings, so I decided to try and hang out with them through the day. Adam was fantastic; he wasn't the smartest but was fun to be around. Bree was becoming friends with me; we bonded over Taylor Swift's music; who knew? Chase…well, Chase was odd… he seemed to think he was better and brighter than everyone else, even his siblings; it irked me that he was a know-it-all. Otherwise, Chase wasn't bad to be around.
Finally, gym class came. The three siblings got used to me hanging around with Leo; they considered me their friend, too. This was nice. Leo returned, and we had three new members in our group. Adam, Bree, Chase, Leo, and I were all in gym clothes, hanging out near the gym entrance, next to the bleachers. I sighed as I watched Bree watching the cheerleaders, Leo was dreading gym, and Adam was clueless as ever. Chase was even sitting on the bleachers doing homework; what a nerd! I was still trying to understand the secret code they seemed to be talking in and still wondered how Adam, Bree, and Chase acted like they knew nothing about school or the real world, for that matter. I found out later that Adam, Bree, and Chase had been home-schooled up until now, and it made a whole lot more sense, but still, something about the three just seemed off.
"I hate gym class!" Leo complained, waking me from my thoughts. I eyed him and chuckled.
"Why?" Adam wondered as he eyed Leo.
A ball then came over and hit Leo in the stomach. I giggled as it did, I only stopped when Leo shot me a death glare. Then, he tried to dribble the ball but failed, making a fool out of himself in front of his new stepsiblings. Once the ball hit his foot, he cried and watched as it bounced away.
"That's why," Leo said, looking annoyed. And it doesn't help when you laugh, Maria," Leo complained as he crossed his arms and sat on the bench in a huff.
"Sorry, I can't help it; you know I'm just teasing you," I explain as I playfully stick my tongue out at him.
Leo was about to answer when a ball was thrown at us again, but instead of getting hit with it, Bree amazingly caught it; I raised my eyebrow at her when she looked confused.
"What do I do!?" Bree wondered as she looked around.
"Throw it," Leo exclaimed as he sighed. I giggled as Bree threw the ball, and it whammed a boy in the face, knocking him down. The boy landed hard on the ground, and the ball bounced away. I couldn't help but laugh out loud. Only Leo looked at her dangerously; he then said to Bree. "I meant to someone who was looking!" Leo exclaimed as if it was apparent.
Bree ran over to check on the boy and said, "Woah, you caught that with your face!"
I smacked my hand to my forehead; things were not going well for Adam, Bree, and Chase, and I felt terrible. I stood there and thought about how I could help Leo get Adam, Bree, and Chase adjusted to school. As I was thinking, I went outside to get a drink from the water fountain; I needed a break from all the shenanigans. Finally, after five minutes, I walked back into the gym. When I walked in, I was shocked.
My best friend Leo Dooley was flying through the air, holding onto a basketball, screaming. Then he hit the net, putting the ball throw it. Nearby, I watched Adam, Bree, and Chase all "oh" as Leo hit the board. Leo fell to the floor after putting the ball through the net, landing on his back. Standing up, Leo must have noticed that everyone was eyeing him in surprise; he even saw me looking at him with widened eyes. How did Leo do that? As far as I knew, he was the least athletic kid here….
Then, before I knew it, the whole gym class was cheering for Leo. Grinning, Leo pumps his fist. I rush over to him, still shocked at what happened, "Leo!? Are you okay? How did you do that!?" I questioned as the class kept cheering for Leo.
Leo grins at me, "Yeah, I got mad skills!" Leo cheers as he leaves the court.
I sighed; things were still not adding up. How did Leo do that? I was concerned for my friend and worried I would lose him to Adam, Bree, and Chase. So far, since he met them, he seemed to want to hang out with them more. I hoped I was overreacting since they were new, but it was hard to tell. I followed Leo out of gym class and decided to corner him at the water fountain when he was drinking water. I sigh in annoyance.
"All right, Dooley; what's going on!?" I wondered as I crossed my arms. He stopped drinking water and looked at me. "You have acted differently since you returned with Adam, Bree, and Chase. It almost feels like you're replacing me…" I said as I frowned, looking at my best friend with hurt.
I see Leo frown instantly. "What? That's not true! I would never replace you. You're my best friend, Maria." Leo explains as if it is obvious; he sighs. "I'm sorry; I know I've been spending much time with Adam, Bree, and Chase, but I'm just making sure they fit in okay; they've never been to school before, and I was just trying to help them," Leo explains as he sighs, he tugged on his nervously.
"Why didn't you just let me know? I could've helped; your siblings seem cool." I explain as I smile slightly at Leo.
He sighs, "I'm sorry, but it's complicated. I can't tell you, and I would if I could." Leo explains as he shakes his head, so he was keeping a secret from me, I knew it.
Frowning, I say, "So now you're hiding things from me? We've been best friends since kindergarten; you can trust me." Does this have to do with Chase having Bionic Hearing? Whatever that is?" I wonder as I shrug; Leo looks at me in surprise.
"Sort of…but that's all I can say, I'm sorry."
With that, Leo walked away, back into the gym, no doubt, to check on his siblings. I frowned, feeling even worse, I wouldn't say I like it when Leo and I fight. Why couldn't he tell me? We tell each other everything. I wouldn't say I like how Leo has changed since his mother remarried; I wish things were how they used to be. I hated to say it, but as cool as I thought Adam, Bree, and Chase were, I disliked them for taking my best friend from me. I decided to avoid Leo and his siblings the rest of the day; I only felt terrible when I rushed away from Bree when she tried to talk to me at lunchtime.
Finally, the end of school came, and thankfully, the rest of it was standard. Leo managed to keep Adam, Bree, and Chase in check, and things went fine. But there was a pep rally after school, and all students were to attend. I sighed in annoyance; I wouldn't say I liked the pep rally. They were pointless. I was alone in the gym, sitting on the bleachers since Leo and I were still fighting. I saw Leo, Adam, and Bree enter the gym five minutes after the pep rally. Getting up, I decided to go over to the group. I wasn't about to lose my friendship with Leo; I needed to apologize.
"Hey guys!" I greet coming up behind Leo once more.
"AH!" Leo screams in surprise, jumping back and glaring at me; I just giggle. "Seriously!? I'm starting to consider that bell for you." Leo mumbles as he sighs. Man, I loved scaring Leo. But then he crosses his arms. "What do you want, Maria?" Leo asks, no doubt still salty from our argument.
I sigh, "I wanted to apologize, Leo; I shouldn't have assumed you were replacing me. It wasn't suitable to accuse you." I apologize, hoping that Leo would accept it. "So? Friends?" I questioned, holding out my hand.
Leo stands there, thinking about the choice, when Bree nudges him with her shoulder, wanting Leo to forgive me or at least speak. Grinning, Leo sighs, "Forgiven. Best Friends Forever – "He smiles as he shakes my hand.
I say in tune, "Always." I finish for Leo. Adam and Bree watch as Leo and I do our secret handshake.
"Yeah! Now we've got Maria back!" Bree exclaimed with excitement as she embraced me. I hugged Bree back. Maria, did you see that Taylor released a new song!?" Bree squealed in excitement. She pulled out her iPod and shared her headphones to let me listen.
While Bree and I were talking about music, Adam and Leo stood there usually when a random pretty girl came forward with a basketball. I was surprised when she approached Leo and asked for his autograph. He signed the ball for her and handed it back to the girl.
"Here you go, baby." Leo grins, handing the ball to her; she smiles at him and walks away with it. Then he turns to Adam, Bree, and me. You guys rock! Ever since gym class, everyone has wanted to be my friend. There's also been a certain gentleness to my wedges, " Leo explains with a smile.
"Do you Want me to change that?" I ask, joking with Leo; I chuckle as he gets defensive.
"NO!" Leo exclaims as he shakes his head and jumps back.
Bree looked about to speak when the gym doors opened, and Chase joined us. Only this time, Chase was grinning like a child on Christmas; it was creepy. Seeing him walk up to the group, I slightly rolled my eyes; I was still getting used to Chase. Otherwise, everyone else was pretty great. The others noticed he joined us, and Leo looked at him oddly, wondering why he was grinning like an idiot.
"Where have you been?" Leo wondered, hoping his stepbrother didn't cause trouble.
"Computer Lab, taking med courses," Chase explained as if it were apparent. My eyes widened, and I looked up from Bree's iPod to listen to what Chase was saying. He grinned more. "Guess who just became a Chiropractor in the Philippines!" Chase exclaimed as he pointed to himself.
Once more, I raised my eyebrow; how could a fifteen-year-old be taking medical courses? Let alone become a Chiropractor in the Philippines? Things were getting weird as the day went on. I wish Leo would tell me what he couldn't tell me about Adam, Bree, and Chase. I was still determined to figure out what was happening with those three, even if they were my friends. Was it wrong that I just wanted to help Leo and get to know Adam, Bree, and Chase? I sighed in frustration and only looked up when Adam spoke up. The mascot, Dewy the Dingo, was grooming Adam, no doubt going for the Salisbury Stake.
"Aw, look, the doggy likes me." Adam grins as he enjoys the attention, but soon, Adam gets tired of it. "Okay, doggy, that's enough…" Adam says, trying to get the mascot away from him, but the mascot kept doing it. "I said that's ENOUGH!" Adam yelled as he tried to run from the dingo.
I laughed and rolled my eyes; that kid was a delight. Then, as Bree and I finished listening to the Taylor Swift Song, a boy came up once Bree stood up and smiled at her. The boy says to Bree, "Hey, I'm Kavin. Aren't you the girl who tried to make me eat a basketball?" Kavin wondered as he eyed Bree. I stood up and listened to the two talks.
"Oh, you remembered!" Bree said with a dreamy look, then she says. "Yeah, I'm sorry about that." Bree apologizes as she feels terrible.
"That's okay, it happens," Kavin says, and I roll my eyes, seeing the two flirt with one another. Kavin then says, "So, there's this party tomorrow, and I was wondering if you wanted to come? You can even bring your friend." Kavin asks as he also gestures to me. I looked at him in surprise; he invited me because I knew Bree. These three weren't so bad; Adam, Bree, and Chase could help with my and Leo's popularity. But then we all heard Adam yell from the other side of the gym, and we looked over.
"NO! IT'S MY SALISBURY STAKE!" Adam screamed as he glared at the dingo.
Then, the oddest thing happened: I noticed Adam's eyes were turning red. Leo must've noticed, too, because I heard him ask Chase, "Why are Adam's eyes turning red?" After that, I didn't hear Chase's answer because everything happened so fast.
Before I knew it, red beams shot out of Adam's eyes. My eyes widened as I watched it happen, and he caught Dewy the Dingo's head on fire. The dingo started to freak out, not knowing what to do. However, the dingo through its head off, revealing to be a cheerleader under it. The head flew, and a football player tried to put it out. The girl in the dingo costume tried to run from the fire and crashed into the cheerleaders just as they threw a girl in the air. The next thing she knew, no one was ready to catch her, and she was screaming. All I could do was watch the chaos unfold before me.
"I got her!" Bree called, and before I knew it, she was across the gym, holding her arms up to catch the girl. However, the girl fell, and Bree missed her. "Oops, overshot, my bad. But don't worry, I know a Chiropractor in the Philippines." Bree exclaimed to the cheerleader, who was now injured.
I just stared; how did Adam catch the dingo's head on fire? How did Bree leave my side and be across the room in point five seconds? Everything was getting worse, and nothing made sense. Adam, Bree, and Chase had been acting odd all day, and now things were even more confusing. I watched as Chase and Leo tried to get Adam to calm down, and Bree even tried to help the cheerleader. The fire alarm started going off from the smoke of the dingo head, and the sprinkler system went off, soaking everyone in the room. Thankfully, it was just a few of us; the rest of the students rushed out when the fire was spotted. I don't blame them; I couldn't believe how crazy things have gotten since Leo returned to school. I missed my best friend, but this…this was a new level of Leo, Leoing things up. I still couldn't quite figure out what was going on around me.
"HELP ME!" Leo begs as he rushes over to me; I nod and try to help him calm Adam down.
Leo goes to help Bree while Chase and I help Adam. At this point, Bree bounced off the walls faster than I could see her. She didn't stop bouncing until she crashed into me. We both gasped in surprise, and I managed to catch her as we landed hard on the basketball court. Leo rushed over to help us up. Just as we got up, we all heard the gym doors open. Turning our heads, I was surprised to see Tasha (Leo's mom) and some man enter the room. Was that Mr. Davenport? The Mr. Davenport? I was shocked to see him. I'd heard about him but never thought I'd meet him. We all turned to the two adults; I watched awkwardly as Adam, Bree, Chase, and Leo waved to the parents, innocently acting like nothing had happened. I joined in, too, and waved slightly.
"SO?" Mr. Davenport questioned, clearly mad as he eyed Adam, Bree, Chase, and Leo. "HOW WAS SCHOOL!? " he wondered. When no one answered, he growled. "GET IN THE HELICOPTER!" Mr. Davenport screamed, causing Adam, Bree, Chase, and Leo to run. Being caught up in the action, I ran with the other three but was stopped by Tasha.
"Oh no, not you, young lady," Tasha exclaimed as she looked at me with a scold.
"Mrs. Dooley, I need to speak to Leo," I explained, hoping she would let me.
"It's always good to see you, Maria, but now is not a good time. You'll have to talk to Leo tomorrow. Have a good night."
With that Tasha left, leaving me to stare on in confusion again. I sighed and looked at the mess that Adam, Bree, Chase, and Leo caused. I frowned; I hoped the four didn't get into significant trouble. I even tried to help calm things down. Something still seemed wrong, and I needed to talk to Leo about what I saw. Adam created fire from his eyes, Bree moved faster than lighting, and Chase…Chase seemed brighter than usual for a kid our age. Nothing made sense; what was I supposed to do? Do I tell the police? Or do I talk to Leo? I decided to speak to Leo; it was evident that Adam, Bree, and Chase seemed essential to him, so I knew I had to help the four out.
I decided to wait until tomorrow to talk to Leo about Adam, Bree, and Chase. However, Leo wasn't in school again whenever tomorrow came, but neither were Adam, Bree, and Chase. I worried all day about the four stepsiblings, wondering if they got into too much trouble. After school, I decided to find out where Leo lived to talk to him face to face and make sure he and the others were okay. It took me a while to find Leo's new address, but I could find it thanks to the Google information on Donald Davenport. It was about ten minutes from the school on Billionaire Boulevard, but I managed to get my mom to drive me there; she dropped me off at their front gate. I gazed up at the new house Leo now lived in, and my eyes widened. It was much bigger than the apartment Leo and Tasha last lived in before the remarriage. I sighed and pressed the buzzer; I heard a voice…
"Davenport Industries, how can I help you?"
"Yes, my name is Maria Knight, and I'm here to visit Leo Dooley, Adam, Bree, and Chase Davenport," I explained, hoping the guard would let me in.
For a moment, I heard nothing, then a sigh, "Yes, Maria Knight, you are on the list. Have a wonderful visit." The voice stated, and soon, a buzzer was heard right when the gates opened.
I could hike the driveway a little; the hill was small. Once I got to the door on the side of the house, I had to stop to catch my breath. I rang the doorbell and waited for someone to answer it. While waiting, I looked at my phone, primarily pictures of Leo and me throughout the years. Finally, the door opened, and it was Leo. He smiled when he saw me.
"Maria! Hey, come on in!" Leo says as he opens it wide to let me in.
"Hey, Leo, thanks…" I smile back, entering the house. I look around and see how beautiful the place is. It was even bigger inside, with many open spaces and beautiful views of Mission Creek. I turn to Leo, "Wow, impressive place. This is much nicer than the old apartment; I'm still shocked that Mr. Davenport is your stepfather." I explained still looking around, trying to see everything.
Grinning, Leo says, "I know; this place is awesome." Leo sings a song with a sigh. His tone then changes to a sadder tone, and I notice.
Frowning, I noticed Leo was the only one around. "What's wrong? And where are Adam, Bree, and Chase?" I questioned with a raised eyebrow. If they all came home together, the other three would be here, too, right? I saw Leo look at his hands sadly. "Did they get in trouble because of what happened at school?" I wondered as I sat down on the couch next to Leo.
"Yes!" Leo cries as he sighs, "It's all my fault. I just wanted to help them. Big D is being so unfair." Leo complains. I raise an eyebrow at the Big D nickname and sigh.
"Look, I may not know fully what's happening here, but Adam, Bree, and Chase seem like cool kids. If there is anything I can do to help, just let me know." I say, trying to cheer Leo up.
Leo seemed to be thinking about something for he was quiet, then grinned at me. "Well, if you want to help, you could help me get that big party to come to this house tonight. Adam, Bree, and Chase may be grounded, but that isn't stopping me from giving them one last night of fun!" Leo states as he jumps up and starts doing dance moves.
I chuckle, "All right, I'm in!" I grin as we start planning the party.
Leo ordered the food, and I called all the students and told them there was a party at the Davenport mansion. Everyone wanted to see the mansion, so they agreed. I even managed to get a hold of Kevin for Bree and invited him, too. We finished setting up when I allowed the first guest to arrive inside. Leo went to get Adam, Bree, and Chase from their rooms.
Once they were upstairs, Leo was on the couch and yelled from a previous conversation, "IT'S IN YOU'RE HOUSE!" Leo screamed in excitement. I rolled my eyes as Leo started to dance, but I joined him and tried to copy his moves. "Do the Leo! Do the Leo!" Leo exclaimed as we danced around; we only stopped when Leo jumped off the couch and into me. It knocked us both down, and Leo landed on top of me; we were face-to-face in an awkward position.
Seeing that we were, we quickly got up. Leo helped me, and we dusted ourselves off like nothing had happened. Then we turned to Adam, Bree, and Chase, who had smiles and excitement in their eyes. Bree rushed over and hugged me, and I hugged her back.
"Wow, Leo and Maria, this is awesome! I can't believe you guys did this for us," Chase exclaims as he smiles.
"Yeah, well, I owed it to you guys since you couldn't go; Maria and I brought the party here," Leo explained as he held out a platter. "Cheese Curl?" He asked while he wiggled his eyebrow.
"What about your mom and Davenport?" Adam wondered as he raised an eyebrow.
Again, I raised my eyebrow. Weren't Adam, Bree, and Chase Mr. Davenport's kids? So why didn't Adam call him dad? Why did he call him Davenport? Leo shook his head, "They are at dinner; they will be gone for hours." Leo grins but looks past Adam and frowns. "Jimmy! Get your head out of there. It's a microwave!" Leo calls rushing over to stop Jimmy; I giggle at Leo being stressed out.
The party went on for a while. Kids were dancing and even drinking the punch Leo got. I would think things were going well for the place. I smiled when I saw Adam, Bree, and Chase having fun. Chase was talking to a few nerds like him, Bree was talking to Kavin, and Adam was eating cake. I watched as Adam picked up a piece to eat it, and Chase came up to him.
"Careful, buddy; that cake has approximately forty-seven grams of sugar. You could bounce off the walls for hours if you eat it." Chase explains as he crosses his arms and looks serious.
I sighed; there was Chase again, trying to be a know-it-all. Doesn't the kid ever have fun? Shaking my head, I grabbed my cake and ate some to see if it would irk Chase. But he didn't budge. Instead, Adam looked at him in confusion as he continued to eat his anyway.
"How do you know that?" Adam wondered with an eyebrow raised.
Then Chase surprised me when he unfolded his arms and said, "Because I just had twelve pieces!" Chase exclaimed suddenly while grabbing some cake and putting it into his mouth, not caring that there was now some in his hand. "Whoo-hoo!" Chase exclaimed as he rushed to the couch, got on it, and started to jump and down.
I once more stared in surprise, and maybe Chase did know how to have fun. I laughed loudly when I saw Adam join him and jump on the couch; it was even more hilarious when Adam shoved Chase off, and Chase landed with an "ow" on the ground. Thankfully, he was okay. So yeah, things were going well, and once more, Leo grabbed my hand and pulled me to the dance floor; we just started to dance when the front door opened. I turned to see who the extra guest was when I stopped and swallowed hard. I turned to Leo and tapped him on the shoulder, "Abort party; Abort party." I whisper into his ear.
"Uh oh..." Leo says hearing my warning and turning to see his mom and dad.
"What the –?" Mr. Davenport questioned as he looked around, slightly getting angrier by the minute.
Leo rushes over and grins. "Hey, you're back!" he states as if it were obvious. He then looks around and tries to act confusedly. "How did these people get in here?! " Leo wonders as he tries to act innocent.
"You are in big trouble, mister," Tasha states as he points to Leo.
Mr. Davenport chuckles, "Hey everyone! Thanks for coming! Now GET OUT!" Mr. Davenport yells, and suddenly, the crowd rushes out as fast as possible.
I tried to follow the crowd in hopes of getting off scot-free. However, Tasha grabbed my arm and stopped me. I was now in the room with Leo, Adam, Bree, Chase, Tasha, and Mr. Davenport. Tasha looked at me disappointed and said, "Not you, young lady. You are in trouble, too. I'm calling your mother."
"No! Please don't call my mother. I'm sorry!" I begged, not wanting to be grounded.
Leo sighs and steps up. "It isn't Maria's fault; she was trying to help me. I wanted to give Adam, Bree, and Chase one last night of fun before you put them back in their display cases, " Leo explains as he frowns, looking at the three sadly. "I asked Maria to help me, so this was all my idea."
Display Cases? I eyed the group oddly and watched the exchange before me. Mr. Davenport groaned and eyed Leo before saying, "Biological Regulated Atmospheric Chambers – "Mr. Davenport corrected Leo, making me raise my eyebrow at the man; this was one weird family Leo's mother married into.
Speaking of which, Tasha cleared her throat and nodded towards me, getting Mr. Davenport's attention. He turned to me and said, "Right, you must be Maria. Tasha and Leo told me about you. I'm sorry we had to meet like this, but I must ask you to leave; I must speak to my kids privately."
I sigh as I nod, respecting the older man's wish. "Of course, meeting you, Mr. Davenport, was an honor," I say as he looks at me in surprise; I then turn to Leo, Adam, Bree, and Chase. "Bye guys, I'll see you later; it was nice to meet you, Adam, Bree, and Chase." I finish as I wave to them before leaving the mansion.
That night, I lay in bed and sighed, wondering how much trouble Adam, Bree, Chase, and Leo would get into. I felt bad for the four, but simultaneously, I felt confused by the four. It wasn't normal for Leo to hide secrets from me, and now he was. I began to look up information on my laptop about the things I had seen from Adam, Bree, and Chase. My eyes widen. It turns out each thing that happened is linked to some superpower, like they were superhumans. Adam had heat vision, Bree had superspeed, and I could only find super intelligence for Chase. If this was the case, I needed to speak to Leo badly. Sadly, I wouldn't see him until school if he would be there anyway.
Sighing, I grabbed my phone and texted Leo: We need to talk…tomorrow at school…
After sending the message, I finally fell asleep with much on my mind….
Chapter 2
Crash Chop Burn Part 2
The next day at school, Leo came rushing almost being late. Seeing him, I sighed; this was it; I was going to tell him what I knew about his new stepsiblings. Walking over to Leo, who was putting things into his locker, I giggled as I came up to scare him again.
"Hey, Leo!"
"AH!" Leo screamed, bouncing back into the locker as he turned to look at me. Growling while I was laughing, Leo said. "Maria, stop, that's not funny!"
"To me, it is." I grinned as Leo sighed and threw a book into his locker. I shifted my bookbag and asked him, "Did you get my text message? Are you guys in trouble?" I wondered with a raised eyebrow.
Leo sighs, "I did; what did you need to discuss? Also, kind of, but we worked things out." Leo grins to himself once again, leaving me out of the loop, but not for long.
I take a deep breath, and I speak. "I know about Adam, Bree, and Chase," I smile.
Leo stops and almost looks afraid as he turns to me. Closing his locker door, he eyes me and says with worry, "What do you know about them?" Leo wonders as he bites his bottom lip. He always does that when he is nervous.
"Adam, Bree, and Chase are Superheroes. It makes so much sense; Adam has heat vision; that's how he caught the dingo's head on fire. Bree has superspeed; that's how she moved across the room so fast, and Chase…well, I'm still trying to figure out what power Chase has, but all I could come up with is super intelligence." I explain with a smile. I see Leo trying to look for a way out, and I grin, "I'm correct, aren't I? Wow! Real-life superhero's that is so cool!"
Leo frowns and pulls me into an empty classroom. "Shhh….Don't be so loud no one else can know." Leo sighs as he looks at me nervously. But you're technically correct, and since we've been friends since Kindergarten, I will tell you, but you have to promise to keep it a secret." Leo begs as he eyes me.
I smile. "Leo, you can trust me. I Like Adam, Bree, and Chase; I will carry their secrets to my grave," I say, holding one hand up and another over my heart like a promise.
"Fine…Adam, Bree, and Chase aren't superheroes. They are Bionic." Leo explains as he takes a deep breath, no doubt worried as he tells me.
Eyeing him, I frown, "Bionic? What's Bionic?" I ask, now confused once more.
I listen as Leo explains what Bionic is and how it works. Learning that Adam, Bree, and Chase get their powers through a little computer chip that bored into the back of their neck is kind of scary. Leo then explained to me how Mr. Davenport kept Adam, Bree, and Chase locked in his basement for fifteen years until Leo and his mother moved in; that's why everything happened the other day at school. I felt terrible knowing the three had never seen the real world before, and I couldn't imagine what they went through. Finally, Leo explained that Adam had superstrength and heat vision. Bree indeed had superspeed, and Chase was built to be the most brilliant man on the planet; it all made sense now.
Looking at Leo, I just stared in shock, he says. "This is why you can't tell anyone. If we do, they will be taken away by the government. I can't let that happen; they are my siblings." Leo finishes as he sighs while sitting at an empty desk.
"Well, we can't let that happen, can we?" I ask as I smile at Leo. "Your secret is safe with me!" I grin as I pat Leo on the shoulder.
Then Leo stands up and hugs me. "Thank you, Maria, it means a lot."
Just like the school bell rang, telling us it was class time. I almost laughed when Leo explained to me where Adam, Bree, and Chase were once I asked. Hearing that they were pretending to be robots was hilarious, and I wish I could see it. Shaking my head, I sighed and went to class.
The rest of the day went by, and Leo said goodbye to me before rushing out the door. I laughed at how excited he was to see Adam, Bree, and Chase; it was cute, honestly. My mother picked me up and brought me home. I was hanging out on my bed and reading the latest Skylar Storm comic book. I felt bad for her; her powers were stolen from the Annalaithor; what a terrible ending for Skylar. Finishing the comic disappointed, I looked down and sighed; it was odd to think I knew three kids with bionic powers. I wondered what Leo, Adam, Bree, and Chase were up to. Just as I thought my cell phone rang, I chuckled as I saw the awkward picture of Leo Dooley on my phone. I just wanted to let you know that I answered it.
"Hello, Leo, what's up?" I wondered as I tossed the comic book to the side.
Leo sounded out of breath as he spoke. "Maria—help—junk yard…now…" he said between breaths.
I frowned. "Okay, slow down, Leo. I can't understand you. Are you running from Trent again? I swear I will murder him…" I began as I got to my feet, ready to save Leo from the bully.
Leo stops me and says, "No! I need help! Mr. Davenport sent Adam, Bree, and Chase to the junkyard because he thinks they are still robots. If we aren't fast enough, the recycling will kill them!" Leo shouts into his phone as he keeps running.
"WHAT!? " I ask, my eyes widening in shock. I grab my coat and my bike helmet. "All right, I'm on my way!" I say and then hang up.
Rushing downstairs, I yelled to let my mother know I was leaving. Hopping onto my bike, I started peddling towards the Mission Breek Junkyard. Peddling as fast as I could, I finally reached the junkyard in ten minutes. I was basically out of breath when I arrived and parked my bike. I ran around the junkyard looking for Leo and finally found him; he was worried and trying to figure out what to do.
"Where are they!?" I question Leo as I stop to catch my breath.
"In there!" Leo points to the big, scary recycling bin.
I look up and frown. "You've got to be kidding me," I mutter as I sigh.
"Come on!" Leo says as he grabs my hand and drags me away.
It took us a hot minute, but we managed to get to the top of the big bin; thank goodness it had stairs along the side. Getting on top, Leo and I looked down in slight fear, both of us stopping for a moment before nodding to one another. We knew we had to go in there and save Adam, Bree, and Chase, even if it was scary. Holding hands, we jumped, screaming as we both landed hard into the piles of trash bags. Getting up, we dusted ourselves off and looked for the three.
"Leo!? Maria!?"
"No, it's Oprah and Beyonce!" Leo shouted, clearly annoyed seeing the three already on the other side.
I was about to speak when the door to the big bin opened to reveal Mr. Davenport and Tasha. Adam started trying to act like a robot, making me laugh, while Bree and Chase rolled their eyes.
"Dude, I think he knows!" Chase exclaimed slapping his brother on the arm.
Adam scoffs. "Now he does," Adam replied as he rolled his eyes.
Just then, a loud noise blared out, and smoke rippled. It made Leo and me scream and start trying to find a way out; there was no way we could get past the obstacles. "GET US OUT OF HERE!" I yelled, trying to get their attention.
"Leo! Maria!" Tasha states in worry.
"I'll find someone to shut it off." Mr. Davenport explained and then disappeared.
"Wait, guys, I have an idea!" Chase
Before Leo and I knew it, we heard screams above us. Looking up, we saw Adam, Bree, and Chase falling from the top of the bin. I laughed to myself as the three landed in piles of trash. Leo and I were backed against the wall, making sure not to get crushed by them. The three sat up. Bree and Chase groaned while Adam grinned like an idiot. I couldn't help but smile at them.
"That never gets old." Adam chuckled as he moved some trash off him, and I laughed.
Chase rolls his eyes and turns to us, "Leo, Maria, what are guys doing here?"
"We came to save you guys," Leo explained as he smiled at his stepsiblings.
The three then looked at me in confusion and then back at Leo. Chase told Leo, "We can't use our, you know what, with her here. What were you thinking!?" Chase questioned, thinking I couldn't hear them.
"It's okay Maria knows your bionic," Leo explains as he smiles at the three nervously.
"WHAT!?" Adam, Bree and Chase question as they step back and eye me.
I nod and smile, "Leo told me everything earlier today at school. Please don't blame him; I had my suspicion. I promise to carry the secret to my grave." I say as I hold my hand up once more.
"Fine for now…but we'll talk about this later." Chase groans as he glares at me, making me frown.
"Come on, let's get us out of here!" Bree says as the three get ready to go through the obstacles again. "All right, Leo and Maria, hold onto Adam. We're going to surround you, and then we'll all go through it together, okay? Three, two – " Bree began as we got into position, but Leo interrupted her.
"Hey, what's that?" Leo wondered as he walked over and hit a big red button. Suddenly, everything in the recycling bin stopped moving and made a loud noise.
I just sighed, "That would be the off button." I muttered as I facepalmed.
"Yeah, oh, you guys didn't see that there?" Adam wondered as he eyed us with confusion.
I just stared at him. Laughing, I shake my head as we make our way safely out of the recycling bin. We meet up with Tasha and Mr. Davenport. Riding in the car with the Davenport-Dooley family was awkward. Everyone was mainly silent, and Mr. Davenport was not happy to learn that I knew about Adam, Bree, and Chase being bionic. He couldn't believe Leo had betrayed them like that.
Upon arriving at the mansion, I got my bike out of Mr. Davenport's car trunk and set it against the side of the house. We all entered, most feeling tired and defeated from the past week of adventure. Mr. Davenport, however, was still upset with all of us, and I could tell Tasha was more worried than worried. I watched as Mr. Davenport paced the house; I sat on the couch next to Leo.
"I don't know what you kids were thinking pulling a stunt like that; you could've been seriously hurt." Mr. Davenport muttered as he eyed Adam, Bree, and Chase.
"Yeah, but you have to admit my robot voice was dead on, " Adam said as he made robot movements again. We all rolled our eyes.
"Leo, why didn't you tell us Adam, Bree, and Chase were still here?" Tasha questioned, eyeing her son with worry. "Why did you tell Maria about them being bionic?"
Leo sighs and stands up, "I was trying to protect my friends. I told Maria because she was already onto it and we could trust her to keep the secret. Plus, she was helping me save Adam, Bree, and Chase. We both saved them, and I will continue to protect my friends; you'll have to go through me before sending them away!" Leo exclaimed as he got into a fighting stance.
"Woah, woah, woah…" I state as I stand up. "….Send Adam, Bree, and Chase away? For what? No way I'm going to let that happen. Correction, you'll have to go through both of us!" I state as I gesture to Leo and me.
Mr. Davenport looks at Leo and me in surprise. Then he sighs, "Leo, Maria, calm down. They're not going anywhere, " he says as he smiles widely.
"Oh, don't you – " Leo began until he realized what Mr. Davenport said. " – Wait, What?"
"What do you mean, Mr. Davenport?" I wonder as Leo and I lower our fighting stances.
Looking between us, Mr. Davenport smiles, "Watching you guys risk your lives for each other made me realize something. Maybe I've been focusing too much on training the superhuman side of you, and I forgot all about the human part. With Maria promising to keep your bones a secret, I realized we shouldn't worry too much about outsiders." Mr. Davenport explained as he sighed.
"Aww…I still don't get it." Adam states in confusion, blinking.
"You're teenagers. Bionic or not, you deserve to experience teenage things, like High School, classes, and cell phones." Mr. Davenport explained as Tasha smiled at him.
"Yes! I'm getting a cellphone!" Bree exclaimed with excitement; I chuckled to myself.
"Yeah, you're not getting a cellphone," Mr. Davenport says as Bree groans, and I laugh. Leo elbows me to stop when Davenport continues, "But what I can give you is another chance. As long as Maria—" He begins as he eyes me thoughtfully. "—Promises to keep your bionics a secret and helps Leo watch over you three. Maybe there's a way that you can live here, go to school, and go on missions."
Chase's eyes light up, "Are you serious!?"
I hold my hand up once more. "You secrete it safe with me, and I promise to help."
"So, they can stay? Since she promised?" Leo wondered as he grinned, too.
"On one condition, no one else can find out about your abilities. I'm worried about Maria knowing, but since she promised, I'm holding her to her word, and Leo's knowing her for a long time. You must also know how to control your emotions so your bionics don't glitch." Mr. Davenport finishes seriously.
After all, the three kids agreed, and Leo and I were smiling. Mr. Davenport was also smiling, and after Adam, Bree, and Chase agreed, he said, "All right, then welcome home!"
Adam pumped his fist and cheered, "WHOO HOO YEAH!" Suddenly, a ball of light came out of his hand and blasted into the ceiling. Leo and I jumped at what happened as pieces of the ceiling crashed. "Oops, my bad," Adam says, feeling bad for the mess.
"He has plasma grenades. My life just got a whole lot better!" Leo grins as he hugs Adam, Bree, and Chase.
I smiled at the four stepsiblings, and I couldn't agree more. Not only did Leo's life get a whole lot better but so did mine. Little did I know how much my life was about to change knowing Adam, Bree and Chase. But if I had a choice, I wouldn't have it any other way because thanks to them I finally felt like I had a second family...
