CHAPTER 28: THE FATE OF MORGAN
Neva awoke to the sound of running water, the morning rays of sunlight streaming through the window of the pure white room. She didn't recall much of what had occurred in the night previous, save the fact that they were free. How unbelievably fantastic! She was going to sleep in for once... But then a new thought entered her head, making her shoot up out of bed.
Where was Morgan?! Seeing Mewtwo sleeping soundly in the chair next to her bed and couldn't help but thank Mewtwo for staying with her through the night. But still, where was her sister?
There were so many things that she didn't know at the time. But as she floated up to near the ceiling of the room, she noticed the many bandages on her. With a small laugh at the thought, she fancied that she looked nice in them. But where could Morgan be? As she exited the room, she saw it to be connected to a much larger cabin. Gazing out of the nearby window though, her thoughts of Morgan and the house were taken away. For there, out the window, Neva got her first real view of the world outside, in her newfound freedom. The breathtaking majesty of the peaks of Purity Canyon astounded her. Then, hearing the sound of footsteps behind her, she turned to see a sleepy man beside her. Cocking her head, she looked at the man in question. She vaguely recalled…seeing him before and yet…who was he?
He yawned, "Oh, so you're awake... You shouldn't walk so much you know… But then again I suppose you don't have to, do you? My name's Cullen…yours?"
(Neva. Where's that sound coming from?) She asked in curiosity.
"Oh, that's the waterfall out back. That water here is extremely pure! As a scientist, it always astounds me how very untainted it is, and the chemical make-up…it's simply marvelous! I must insist you must try some. It'll do you some good!" he blabbered to her.
So, floating behind Cullen, she went out onto the porch, held high above the crystal clear river below. As Cullen brought up a bucket of water, Neva sensed around the house for other presences. There was a woman sleeping in one of the bedrooms, Mewtwo of course, and Cullen, but no Morgan. Where WAS she?!
(Cullen, do you know where my sister is?) Neva questioned after a moment.
He gave her a confused look, "Sister? No…the fellow that bought you here was the only one with you..." He told, and handed her a metal cup, filled to the brim with the natural river water, "Ummm…here…drink this."
Neva obliged, even though she was deep in thought. As an answer came to her then, of where Morgan might be, she couldn't help but feel horrified! She must have been caught! As soon as Mewtwo awoke, they would go back to what had been her home, and rescue her!
After a few moments however, the water she had drunk kicked in. Neva felt a pleasant, tingling sensation course through her body, eliminated all of her pain. Neva immediately took a liking to the Mt. Keyna water. This was grand! When they rescued Morgan, she must come here and try this stuff! Then, a new thought struck her. These were humans…and from what she could tell, Mewtwo did not trust humans. Why were they there then? She began to feel terribly confused…
She turned around slowly to thank Cullen for the drink, only to find Mewtwo standing some several feet behind her. He looked…hesitant. Quickly she told the male human that she would like to be alone with Mewtwo. Cullen quickly obliged, and went into the cabin. Luna was still asleep, and looking again at the time, he joined her…
Meanwhile, Neva had turned back to the waterfall. What was she to say to Mewtwo? She had to think of something!
(It's beautiful; this place…the water here is so pure. But…why are we here? I can sense you don't like humans Mewtwo.)
He nodded, even though he realized that Neva couldn't see such a thing, (That is true…or at least when concerning most of them. I brought you to this place so you could heal. Though, there was a risk…)
She raised an eyebrow at him as she turned to face him, (A risk?)
His violet eyes flashed, (Yes. I was not certain if the spring water would work on you. Your wounds were very different than the ones I gained long ago...)
She suddenly understood why they were here, in the presence of humans, (Oh…is that why you went to these people?)
He nodded, (Yes. My secrecy wasn't worth it…)
She cocked her head at him, in question, (Worth what?)
(Your life. That is far more important than any secrets I have…) he told, but Neva noticed after a time, the distant, bothered look on his face.
But that was beside the point. She thought it to be very sweet of him, his actions, (Mewtwo…thank you… But…what's wrong?)
Mewtwo hesitated for a moment, not certain what to say. How was he supposed to tell this creature, that her sister had perished to save them? Should he go right out and tell her? He had always thought the most direct route to be the best to go on, and so, he gazed at her sadly, trying to lay the fact out as gently as he could, (Neva… Morgan…died, trying to escape your captors. She's gone…)
Neva looked at him in pure shock and disbelief, feeling as though she had been punched in the stomach. Emotions of horror and immense sorrow swelled in her to the point that she wanted to scream. She wanted to yell at him her denial, that such a thing couldn't be true, for it seemed impossible to her. She desired to cry because it was all too much, too overwhelming to her. But all she did was sit down on the bench on the porch. How…how…could Morgan be dead?
Morgan had been far stronger then she had been and so much more… Simply HOW?! (That can't be…) she whispered.
His usual hawk like gaze seemed soft, sorrowful on her, (I'm sorry. She sacrificed herself to save us…to make sure we were free. If I would have realized her intent, I might have stopped her…
It likely sounds empty to you but…I truly am sorry Neva…)
(…No…)
Neva was having far too much trouble taking it in. Morgan…dead? Morgan who had been beside her when they came into the world? Morgan who had fought creatures with a rage that Neva never had? Morgan who had laughed and played with her so many times? Who had given her control over herself again? Morgan who had planned to escape with her to the world outside? This could not be…
Neva tried the only thing she could do. She attempted to sense Morgan, tried to find her aura, somewhere out there, in the world. But no matter how she tried, she could not find her sister… Her thoughts became frantic, trying to find a way that such a thing was so, but only one explanation came to her, one that made her want to scream in anguish. Morgan was truly gone... NO!
(Morgan…) She sobbed, shaking.
(I'm sorry…) Mewtwo said as he placed his hand on her shoulder, which Neva shrugged off coldly. She didn't want his comfort…
Neva turned to look at him. He seemed so terribly sorry, and while he could not grieve for her sister, because he had only just known her, he seemed to honestly feel for her death. She could not blame him...it was not as though he had killed her sister. Morgan had done that herself, to ensure her (Neva's) safety. But…what was she to do now? What would Mewtwo let her do?
(Neva…) He began again, before he was cut off.
Arms curled around herself, she gazed at him slowly, (Would it be all right…if I stayed with you for a time?) She asked meekly.
He nodded, (As long as you like. My home is far from here though.) (That's okay. I can fly there.) She responded as she floated upwards.
Of course, this didn't last long as Neva would have predicted. As she fell, Mewtwo caught her silently in his arms, holding her for a moment. Setting her down, he then turned to his new work.
Quickly, he wrote a note to the two humans present in the house, and used his powers to wipe their minds clean of the night's events. He had been too worried, too confused, to think of such an option last night. When Neva asked what it was he was doing, he told her calmly.
Neva was taken aback by the answer. She didn't think it even remotely right for him to do, but held her tongue. The very idea though, of him being able to do that, made her nervous.
Quickly, they left towards Mt. Keyna's underground caverns, with Mewtwo in the lead. Without need to be told, the male pokémon held Neva in the air with his powers, making sure to keep her firmly in tow. He didn't recall ever being more careful when moving something…
When the couple awoke, they felt extremely exhausted, as though they hadn't had a wink of sleep during the night. Strange really, since all they recalled doing in the night previous was dreaming peacefully of their future together. As Luna started to make pancakes, Cullen sat down at the table, reading a book about the certain mineral properties of water and such… After awhile however, he took notice of a note on the table. Quickly scanning it over, he called for Luna to come and look. It read:
Luna and Cullen,
Though you will not remember what you did for me, you have my deepest thanks. Someone I know now owes her life to you. I don't know what I would have done, if she'd died, knowing what might have been. Thank you…
Luna and Cullen would puzzle over this note in many days to follow, but their research soon regained its place at being top priority. Besides, one question remained always present in the both of them, which needed more answering than the tiny note…where did that pure water come from? …They would probably never know…
