Episode 4: Helping Those Weaker
The next day, Noire was in her office trying to get caught up on her paperwork backlog. She was quietly grateful that Uni and the Sistermons had managed to resolve the T-Rex attack without her help, but she was still worried about what would come through that portal next... (if that 'Greymon' was supposedly one of the weaker Digimon, I don't want to think about what other horrors might come through-)
A sudden knock at the door snapped her out of her pondering. "Neptune, if that's you, go away! I'm busy right now!"
"You don't want to see me, Noire...?" said a cute voice that was definitely NOT Neptune.
"K-Sha?!" Noire gasped, going into an internal panic. "No no, if it's you, it's fine! Please, come in!" The door opened, revealing a young woman with black hair slightly longer than her shoulders, two braids framing a cute face with bright skin, green eyes and a small nose, the rest of her hair held in place with a red headband. This was K-Sha of the group known as Gold Third, a former child mercenary who now desired to try and live a normal life. And who also desired the CPU, to near-yandere levels. It had led to them coming to blows in the past, but K-Sha was making an earnest effort to keep herself in check nowadays. "Um, so, how have you been? I don't think I've seen you since the whole thing with Ho-Hum went down..."
"I've been busy," K-Sha said, looking down at the floor. "Studying, taking the finals, graduation..."
"Wait, you graduated?!" Noire gasped, her eyes shrinking to white circles. "And I missed the ceremony? Why didn't you tell me?!"
"It's okay, Noire; I know you were busy too," K-Sha said with a smile. "C-Sha and the rest of Gold Third were there, at least. I think that Steamax might have showed up too, but I only saw a glimpse..."
"Uni probably asked him to go in her place," Noire mused. "Wait, if you graduated, how come you're still wearing your uniform?"
"Oh. Well... I'm kind of having trouble figuring out what I want to do with my life, that doesn't involve... weapons," K-Sha admitted. "So for the time being, I'm working as a tutor for the school, helping less fortunate kids, the orphans and homeless who can't afford school..."
"Really? Well that's good to hear," Noire nodded. "I'm glad that you're doing something positive for society, at least."
"Yeah... that's actually kind of the reason I'm here," K-Sha said. "You know that soup kitchen where the T-Rex attacked yesterday? One of the girls I'm tutoring was watching Uni and those nuns fight it off..."
"She was? She wasn't hurt, was she?" Noire fretted.
"No, she's fine, she came out just after it wrapped up, but she got scolded by one of the kitchen workers," K-Sha responded. "She really seemed interested in the nuns, but she didn't get a chance to meet them in person afterwards, because they were getting swarmed by the other homeless..."
"Oh, so you wanted me to arrange a meeting for her or something?" Noire guessed.
"That's part of it, but I was hoping you could help her out... see, some people found her lying naked in the alleys one day, and took her to the hospital... but when she woke up, she couldn't remember anything- not even her name! At least the doctor said she wasn't raped or something..."
"Not even her name?! That's terrible!" Noire lamented.
"I know... the name she uses now is one that she came up with after looking through a book of baby names," K-Sha noted sadly. "I was thinking that maybe you could try running her picture through a database and see if you find something..."
"Hmm... I think you would be better off asking the Lastation Guild," Noire said in response. "They have access to the missing persons database; you could ask Uni, she's been helping them out a fair bit lately."
"I guess I should have asked her first... but I really wanted to see you, Noire~" K-Sha said with a large heart floating above her head.
"I, uh, thanks," Noire grunted, slightly flustered. "But I am kinda busy right now..."
"Oh, right..." K-Sha sobered up somewhat. "Well, at least I got to say hello..." She turned to leave.
"Wait a second," Noire said. "If you want your friend to meet those nuns, their sister is working here at the Basilicom. Go to the priests' quarters and ask for Sister Ciel, she should be able to help you."
"Oh, thank you!" K-Sha briefly turned back, flashing a beaming smile. "See you later, Noire~!"
"Later," Noire waved as her friend left. Hopefully now she could catch up on her paperwork without another interruption... realizing something, she held her breath and counted to ten, but no other knocks at the door were heard. Letting her breath out in a rush, Noire was glad she hadn't jinxed herself as she got back to work for real.
*The next day...*
"Out! Out, you stupid mutt! No dogs allowed!" an NPC yelled as she chased Hackmon out the door. Hackmon shot back a glare as the door was slammed shut, before shaking his head and trotting back to where Ciel was waiting.
"I told you that you shouldn't have followed K-Sha inside," the Sistermon chastised.
"I just wanted to see what a human orphanage looked like, sheesh," Hackmon griped. "I hate just sitting around and waiting...!"
"Patience is a virtue, Hackmon," Ciel replied with a raised finger. "Besides, I doubt that we'll be waiting for very long..." Sure enough, a few minutes later K-Sha reemerged from the orphanage, a teenage girl with brown hair longer than her shoulders and small gray eyes following her, dressed in a worn black shirt and brown skirt with old sneakers. "See, what did I tell you?"
"Hey, this isn't the older sister that fought that T-Rex Greymon!" the brunette girl complained.
"No, I said that it was her twin sister," K-Sha clarified. "This is Sister Ciel, she works with the priests at Noire's Basilicom. Sister, this is Norn, who I'm currently tutoring. She's great at math and decent at science."
"Norn Mikihara," the girl bowed awkwardly. "I gave myself a last name, too."
"It's nice to meet you, Miss Mikihara," Ciel curtsied. "And lest we forget, this here is Hackmon."
"Oh, a superhero doggy! How cute!" Norn bent down to get a closer look. "Can I pet him?"
"Petting is fine, but no scratching the ears," Ciel advised, smiling as the orphan did as told, Hackmon seeming to enjoy the attention. "So, I heard that you've lost your memories?"
"Yeah... first thing I remember is waking up in a hospital bed," Norn nodded sadly. "But the doctor and nurse said I hadn't been hurt or anything, even though they found me naked... the police couldn't find anything, so I was put here until further notice..."
"I felt sorry for her. I know what it's like to have your childhood stolen from you," K-Sha spoke up. "I was hoping that by tutoring her, that maybe exercising her brain might cause her to remember something... and even if that doesn't work, she could still get a job and contribute to society, even if she never gets adopted..."
"You poor child..." Ciel sighed and shook her head, Hackmon making a whining sound. "He's sad for you too."
"Oh, I see... he seems really smart. Almost like he could talk himself," Norn mused.
"So what if I can talk?" Hackmon suddenly spoke, causing K-Sha to yelp in surprise and fall on her butt. "Oh, whoops. I guess Lady Noire didn't tell you?"
"No, she didn't," K-Sha grunted as she stood back up, nursing her rear end.
"That wasn't very nice, Hackmon," Ciel scolded the rookie Digimon.
"What? This girl thought I could talk anyway, so why not?" Hackmon griped.
Norn couldn't help but giggle a little. "Wow, he IS smart! Is he really a doggy?"
"Not exactly... he just looks enough like one to pass. Hackmon, my sisters and I come from far away, you see. So, my sisters being named Noir and Blanc is just a coincidence and nothing more."
"Yeah, her sister's name is Noir with no 'e'," K-Sha added. "Um, Hackmon, is there anything else I should know about you, so I don't get surprised again?"
"Well, I can digivo- uh, that is, I can take on a bigger, deadlier form, temporarily," Hackmon replied. "But I probably shouldn't scare little Norn here by showing you... Sister Noir can get scary when she gets mad at me!"
"I'm not Noir, Hackmon."
"No, but she'll hear it from you... huh?" Hackmon pointed his snout to the sky as his ears pricked up. "I'm hearing some kinda buzzing..."
"Buzzing? Like a bee?" Norn guessed.
"Yeah, it's getting closer... you ladies might wanna cover your heads," Hackmon advised; Norn promptly doing so, while K-Sha pulled a cardboard box from seemingly nowhere and put it over her head, though not hiding herself completely.
"There it is!" Ciel made out a shape that was something like a cartoon bee. "Wait, is that... a FanBeemon?!"
"It is! What's one of those doing here?" Hackmon said in confusion. "Don't they usually travel in swarms...? Uh-oh, it's coming this way!" K-Sha and Norn quickly crouched down at hearing that, but the FannBeemon didn't attack, instead stopping above Hackmon's head.
"Oh, another Digimon! Thank goodness!" the FanBeemon spoke. "Please help us!"
"Us?" Hackmon said. "Where's the rest of you?"
"I... we got separated! B-by that big...!" the insect Digimon flailed in panic.
"Please, calm yourself," Ciel put out a hand. "We can't help you if you can't even speak..."
"Sorry... we were just doing our usual business, gathering pollen and making honey, when this big insect Digimon started attacking us! We flew for our lives, but it was too fast! But then we saw this big white portal and tried to escape through it, and that's how we wound up here! But that big Digimon still followed us...!"
"Okay, then! We'll help you out!" Hackmon declared. "We'll find that big bully bug and swat 'em for you!"
"You will? But you're smaller than that Digimon is..."
"I can get bigger," Hackmon countered.
"Yes, and I will help as well," Ciel concurred. "Miss K-Sha, you should take Norn back inside for her safety, and then call Lady Noire to come help us out."
"Okay! And then I'll come and help too!" K-Sha nodded with a determined expression. "Come on, Norn."
"Okay... good luck, you two! Don't get stung!" Norn encouraged as K-Sha escorted her away.
"Well, first we should get on the rooftops," FanBeemon suggested. "But how can you do that without flying?"
"Watch and learn," Ciel chuckled. "Let's get to an alleyway."
*And so...*
Sistermon Ciel and Hackmon followed FanBeemon as they dashed across the rooftops, the latter having already digivolved to Bao Hackmon, occasionally making superhuman leaps between buildings. "Wow, I didn't know you could jump between two walls like that, Sistermon!" FanBeemon commented.
"What do you expect from one trained by the Royal Knight Gankoomon?" Ciel said proudly. "Now then, do you see any sign of your friends?"
"Or that big bully bug?" Bao Hackmon added.
"I'm pretty sure they went this direction..." FanBeemon said with less confidence than it liked. "Wait, I think I see them! Up there!" It pointed to a few specks up in the sky.
"We need to get closer," Ciel said, she and Hackmon jumping over a gap to another rooftop. As they got closer, they were able to make out the shapes of two FanBeemon being chased by a much larger insect...
"Can you see what that Digimon is?" Bao Hackmon grunted as he squinted his eyes looking upward.
"They're too close to the sunlight," Ciel said as she shaded her eyes with one hand. But then the other FanBeemon fled, the larger Digimon pursuing... it was definitely insectoid, but had thick dinosaur-like arms with blue skin. "Oh no... it's a DinoBeemon- an Ultimate-level."
"So? You can digivolve to Ultimate, right?" Hackmon pointed out. "We can beat it if we work together!"
"How can you beat it if you can't even fly up there...?" FanBeemon said in despair.
"Simple. We bring it down to our level," Ciel replied, readying two throwing knives. "Hackmon, be ready to tackle it down when it falls in range."
"Got it, I'm ready," Bao Hackmon nodded, walking forward a bit before crouching down and tensing up his leg muscles.
"Here we go! Byakusai!" Ciel intoned, hurling her knives upward, striking the DinoBeemon's wings, causing it to fall out of the sky, flailing from surprise! "Now!"
"Got it!" Bao Hackmon cried he he leapt into the sky, colliding bodily with the DinoBeemon in mid-air, causing both to crash onto another rooftop, Hackmon rolling off and taking a ready stance. "In the name of the Royal Knights, you will cease and desist at once, DinoBeemon!"
"What...?" DinoBeemon grunted as it slowly pulled itself back to its feet. "Who are you talking about? And who are you?"
"I'm Hackmon, a Royal Knight in training!" Bao Hackmon proclaimed. "And you have no right attacking those defenseless FanBeemon!"
"Why not? I only obey the laws of nature," Dinobeemon responded. "Survival of the fittest... the weak die, the strong survive. That is the way it has always been, from the beginning of the Digital World... you would dare interfere?"
"That's not what I was taught!" Hackmon shot back in disgust. "Master said we should use our strength to defend the weak, to protect those who can't defend themselves! And if you can't understand that, then you need to be swatted!"
"Then your master is a fool," Dinobeemon asserted. "It seems you are the one who needs to be culled first!"
"Bring it on! Burn Flame!" Bao Hackmon unleashed flames from his maw, DinoBeemon flying up into the air to evade, then emitting a horrible buzzing sound that caused Hackmon to collapse and cover his ears! The insect Digimon then moved to strike with its claw, only to be hit by a flying kick from Ciel, causing it to tumble a fair distance away. "Ugh... thanks, Ciel," Hackmon grunted as he shook his head to dissipate the ringing.
"You should have waited until I caught up," Ciel chastised, keeping an eye on the DinoBeemon as it righted itself, before charging at her- but she was ready. "Digivolve to Pandamon!" She was engulfed in light, her panda claw stropping DinoBeemon's attempted punch. Her digivolution complete, she retaliated with a Sasa Punch that sent the insect Digimon flying!
"My turn! Dragless Spiker!" Bao Hackmon cried as he leapt and slashed at DinoBeemon with his rear leg blades, managing to draw a little green-colored blood as his foe fell to the ground once again. "Who's the weak one now?!"
"You are," DinoBeemon retorted, before suddenly vanishing! "Hell Masquerade!" Hackmon cried out in pain as he was slashed several times over, only able to see afterimages of DinoBeemon and being unable to fight back, collapsing with several slash marks on his hide. DinoBeemon then did the same to Pandamon, who curled into a defensive position, though a few tears opened in her hide, revealing stuffing underneath.
(It's too fast for my Pandamon form to handle!) Ciel thought, abruptly reverting to her original form and unsheathing her White Clover Blade. Expecting an easy victory, DinoBeemon went for another Hell Masquerade, but this time Ciel was able to parry and deflect most of the slashes! "Fast, but predictable!"
"In that case... Irritant Buzz!" DinoBeemon intoned, emitting another horrible buzzing sound, causing Ciel to grit her teeth! But before it could strike, it was swallowed up by flames from Hackmon! "What?!"
"Don't count me out yet!" Bao Hackmon taunted. "Teen Blade!" he lashed out with his tail blade, DinoBeemon managing to block it with its arm, though a little blood was drawn as a result. The insect Digimon vanished again, but Hackmon was ready this time, jumping and spinning around with his rear legs out, managing to blunt most of DinoBeemon's slashes, though he still fell to the ground in a heap.
"Die, weakling!" DinoBeemon cried as it moved to finish its fallen foe- but suddenly a (ratatatatatat) rang out as it was pelted with bullets! "What the-?! Who did that?"
"I did!" K-Sha exclaimed with machine gun in hand. "I may be human, but don't underestimate me! Transform!" The schoolgirl was engulfed in a golden light, fading to reveal that she now wore a black hat and eyepatch, with a large golden weapons apparatus behind her, now holding two small golden machine guns in her hands. "Gold Form activated!"
"I am not impressed," DinoBeemon said bluntly, before blurring out of sight! However, K-Sha's 'eyepatch' was actually a high-tech scanning device, enabling her to predict her foe's path of attack! "Got you!" she cried as she opened fire in a seemingly random direction, only to nail Dinobeemon in the face!
"Good for you! And now... Awakening!" Ciel was again engulfed in light, but this time her appearance stayed mostly the same, her headgear now covering her eyes, and her bust having become slightly more prominent. She ran at DinoBeemon, then suddenly vanished, the insectoid putting up its arms to block as several slash marks appeared on its body! "How does it feel to be on the receiving end?!"
"Not good enough!" DinoBeemon shot back, also blurring out of sight, only the sounds of clashing being heard with a few after images here and there.
"Man, I can't follow them at all!" Hackmon complained. "I need more training..."
"I can follow them," K-Sha said as she tracked them with her eyepiece... but then DinoBeemon suddenly appeared in front of her, flooring her with a punch to the face before she could react! Bao Hackmon quickly ran to try and attack the Digimon from behind, only to accidentally collide with Ciel as she attempted the same, both collapsing in a heap.
"Die, human!" DinoBeemon raised its claw to crush K-Sha's head... but the moment he struck, a large steel blade suddenly appeared to block the blow! "What?" It looked up to see a white-haired woman dressed in black, with clear anger in her green power-symbol eyes.
"You... do NOT hurt my friend!" Black Heart cried as she shoved upward with her sword, throwing DinoBeemon into the air, then extending her processor wings and flying up to it before it could recover, hitting it with a powerful downward slash that sent the Digimon careening down into the alleys below! Black Heart waited a few seconds to see if it would fly back up, but when it didn't, she promptly flew back over to K-Sha, who was now sitting up. "Are you okay?"
"Owww... I'll be fine. He crushed my eyepiece, though," K-Sha grunted, deciding to revert to normal, the damaged eyepiece vanishing as a result. "Is my eye bleeding, Noire?"
"It doesn't look like it... just a little red from irritation," Black Heart observed. "Ciel, Hackmon, can you go down to the street and find that overgrown bug? I'm going to take K-Sha to the nearest hospital, then I'll be right back!"
"You got it!" Hackmon nodded, Ciel speaking similarly as the two headed for the rooftop's edge, Ciel jumping from wall to wall to safely descend while Hackmon just jumped down, rolling once he hit the street. "Okay, did you see where it fell?"
"This way, I believe," Ciel pointed, the duo heading down the alleyway and making a left... but there was nothing there. "Wha... I could have sworn it fell here!"
"No sign of an impact," Hackmon said as he looked about, sniffing with his nose. "I don't smell it, either... maybe that attack from Lady Noire defeated him straight away?"
"He didn't appear to take lethal damage, though," Ciel countered.
"Yeah, but we got in a few good hits ourselves. Maybe that thing just reached its limit?" Hackmon suggested.
"...Perhaps," Ciel shook her head as she reverted to normal. "Let's look around a bit more to be sure, and then we should see about reuniting that FanBeemon with his friends, so we can send them back to the Digital World."
"Okay, let's go!" Hackmon nodded as he also reverted to normal, the two heading off together...
*Elsewhere...*
DinoBeemon groaned as it slowly returned to its senses, realizing it was lying on a soft surface... Pushing itself up, it realized it was now inside a building somewhere...
"He seems to be coming around," a male voice spoke up.
"Excellent," said a sultry female voice, DinoBeemon soon perceiving a figure before him with humanlike features... but his senses told him it was a Digimon sitting before him. "Be grateful that I had my subordinate rescue you at the last moment...'
"Who are you?" DinoBeemon queried.
"I am Lilithmon, Demon Lord of Lust. I must say, I was very impressed to see you hold your own against three opponents at once," the succubus stated. "Rejoice, for I have deemed you worthy to be recruited to my cause."
"And what if I do not wish to serve you?" DinoBeemon said curtly.
At this, Lilithmon's smirk vanished, standing to her full height. "Because, my dear DinoBeemon... you have no choice!" An evil aura flared up around her, causing the insect Digimon to go weak in the knees... "Either serve me, or I shall serve you death!"
"Ah..." DinoBeemon promptly fell to the floor with its head bowed. "Enough! Have mercy! I will serve you, oh master!"
"Good," Lilithmon said as her aura vanished. "At least you're smart enough to know when you're outclassed... now then. First things first, we must ensure you are properly trained. Thus my subordinate here will take you to a nearby dungeon so you can practice against the monsters there. And I highly suggest that you not try anything with Merlin, because I'll know. And then you will die a slow and painful death. Do we understand each other?"
"Yes, master!" DinoBeemon agreed.
"Very well then, let us go," Merlin nodded, walking up to the insect and raising his staff, both teleporting away.
*Back at the orphanage...*
"And then the goddess Black Heart struck down the evil mutant insect, saving the innocent honeybees from a horrible fate!" K-Sha finished her story, eliciting cheers from the kids gathered around.
"So did the good bees make it back home?" one kid asked.
"Yes, Sister Ciel and the squire in training managed to find the bees that were scattered across the city and take them home," K-Sha said with a smile and nod.
"So what about Mr. Square?" another kid asked.
"Squire, not square. He realized that he has a long way to go, so his journey continues to this day," the schoolgirl answered.
"Well, I'm glad that Sister Ciel is just as heroic as her sisters, even if she needed a little help from the goddess," Norn spoke up.
"Well, Sisters Noir and Blanc had help from Uni, if you remember," K-Sha pointed out. "But we all need help sometimes, even the goddesses. But by working together, we can overcome any challenges life throws at us! So let that be a lesson to help each other, okay kids?"
"Okay!" the kids chorused.
"All right, story time's over," stated an NPC worker. "Miss K-Sha, thank you for coming by today."
"You're welcome," K-Sha stood and bowed. "I'll come back tomorrow for our next lesson, okay Norn?"
"Sure! And tell Miss Noire thanks for saving Sister Ciel and Hack- I mean the squire!" the orphan caught herself.
"I will!" K-Sha nodded, turning and waving goodbye to everyone.
And so another day passed in Lastation...
