I don't own Naruto, nor do I own Tove Lo's Matteo!
Sad, spent and crabby, Kyori sat against her headboard with a sigh escaping her lips as she clicked on her lamp. She was incapable of going back to sleep any time soon. And she didn't want to if it meant she would relive that nightmare. It has been a constant pattern since the big fall out that led to her duking it out with Maki, which was over a week ago. While all of her external wounds healed, internally, the Shimura girl felt as though she was constantly decaying. Kyori and Shisui hasn't spoken civilly since then and while he came up with the suggestion of them hanging around like nothing happened, Kyori made no move to oppose as long as what happened with her and Fu stayed between them. The one thing they wanted was for people to stay out of their business. So if that meant that she could only speak to him when spoken to then, she was okay with that. She decided she would do anything to be apart of his life.
In a few hours, she would have to do the usual: shower, eat breakfast, take her medication, and go on about her day. A frown settled on her lips. Kyori felt like she was forgetting something, causing her to she pull out her journal. In the midst of her reading, her mind drifted to a bright smile, glamorously bottomless onyx eyes and an unkempt raven head of hair.
'Shisui…' Kyori sighed.
She had to stop thinking of him, but it was proven to be very hard when she finally came to understand what Shisui had meant to her.
Sometimes… he reminded her of Risu. Like her, he was the type that she could confide in without repetitive judgement. He was caring, loving and he accepted her. Cold front and all. He gave her a chance when her own father refused to. And lord, the things he made her feel when he smiled, or laughed made it so clear to her. What she had felt was closer to love than she's ever known.
But she couldn't say he felt the same. And like the flirt she believed he was, Shisui found other girls to entertain and feed his lines to. It really hadn't take much time if any at all for him to get over her…
That had hurt, but Kyori knew that Shisui deserved better. He deserve more than she could ever offer anyways, which is why she hadn't sought him out or begged for forgiveness. Their friendship, and potential for more was understandably reduced to rubble the moment she couldn't refuse the redhead.
Kyori had the choice to push him away, and to fix things with Shisui; however, she wanted intimacy just as much as she needed to prove a point that would ultimately result in her hurting everyone.
Her typical antics, sadly.
Then her eyes landed on today's date and she blanched. It was as though god was testing how she would manage to prosper. Somehow, Izumi coaxed her into an entire sleepover, and Kyori don't remember agreeing. She didn't want to bump into Shisui or act as though things hadn't gone rancid between them. But Izumi insisted that it would be fun, and she could use a little more of that.
Surprisingly, they had grown closer despite everything, but Shisui was fairly good at keeping things cordial to the point that Izumi hadn't suspect a thing. The brunette Uchiha thought that they were still dating despite the lack of affection and words shared between Kyori and Shisui. But there were some alternative theories! Kyori believed Izumi was either firmly rooting for them to be together or she would resort to anything to find out what went wrong between them. Either way, she won't be pleased once she found out what Kyori had done to her big brother. And with the both of them lying to her would do no good.
The morning light had spilled through her curtains, dousing the garnet haired girl in its gloomy shine. She hummed while gathering an appropriate outfit. Looking out the window, she held a soft expression it seemed the November rain wouldn't come to an end.
Kinoto leaned against the fancier rental, whistling a tune as he waited for his charge. He hadn't seen the girl in weeks, so when Hizume requested for him to drop her off to meet with Shisui, he was glad to be of service. That, and he wanted to know how things have progressed with Shisui since he was caught up in his own matters.
"Oh? You look nice today!" The man grunted out, noticing a change of style. She was finally covered head to toe.
She wore her hair in a messy updo with a navy windbreaker that was down to the start of her thigh, covering her majority of her outfit, which consisted of a knitted turtleneck and jeans. It did well to protect her from the chilled autumn breeze with a high chance of rain.
Kyori snorted, giving him a sisterly shove before she beat him to the car. "Thanks muscle-head."
"So…how's it going with the self-proclaimed lady killer? Hizume-san said the date went well." the man asked while putting her bags into the car, starting it up once he had his seat belt on and was ready to go.
"It actually did."
"Soo," there was a very pregnant pause as he drove, taking very few glances at the teen beside him. "Are you two going steady now?"
Kyori momentarily tensed at the questions, wondering if she should tell Kinoto the truth. It's not like he would judge her all too much, but she really didn't want to accidently put a target on the Uchiha's back.
The burgundette sighed, biting her lip. She really didn't want to embellish the truth. "It was a short-lived thing." Putting her hands in her lap, she managed a weak smile. "But I really, really enjoyed dating Shisui. As for going steady, well..." Kyori then shrugged.
But the sadness lathering her voice, said otherwise and the frown on his prickly face had told Kyori that he was not all that convinced.
"Did he hurt you?" he asked, feeling utter discomfort. Kinoto liked Shisui a lot, but Kyori was practically family. He would protect her despite his perception, favored the Uchiha.
"He didn't… It was my call," Kyori spoke lowly, shaking her head. It really wasn't Shisui. "We're just better off as friends, and it took us dating to realize that."
"And what made you change your mind?" the craggy man pondered as he shot her a quick glance. "Was it your father or was it that little bastard, Yamaguchi?"
"Not you being shady!" Kyori pursed her lips momentarily before tittering. Kinoto knew Fu his whole life after all! When he hadn't joined her for a quick laugh, she turned her head away from him, now preferring the window. "It was my choice. If we were together, I would eventually hurt him, Kinoto."
It was not exactly the truth and if Kinoto was aware of that, he failed to call her out for it. Instead, he kept his thoughts to himself and drove in silence. The harsh pitter-patter of the rain was the sole exception.
"We're here," Kinoto grumbled, pulling up to a small shopping center.
Kyori's stomach rolled and dropped since they stopped chatting. Her nerves were growing more intense by the minute as she forced herself to open the door, and her stance was stiff the moment she felt eyes on her. It was inexplicable and maybe irrational, but she had a deep hunch that she was being watched by the Uchiha. Her fudge brown eyes scanned the almost vacant lot and she choked on her breath once her eyes clashed with his alluring dark ones.
'Shisui…' The burgundette swallowed thickly and her legs made her feel heavy, as if she was dragging cement slabs. It was strange, Kyori ached to see him every single day but right now she wanted to disappear from his sight. Not because she was afraid of Shisui, but it was bound to be painfully awkward if not gut-wrenching. How could it not? He caught her moments after the act, only to hear her whine despite trampling all over his feelings.
It was horrible.
Kyori flinched under the ceaseless drizzle. Snapping out of her constant brooding, she helped Kinoto with her things, carrying a neatly wrapped box. As she plodded towards Shisui's car, she avoided his glances for that would only make this mess all the more real for her. They drove in deafening silence, neither succeeded in lightening the tension.
Shisui was having a hard time ignoring her as he took inconspicuous glances at the Shimura that kept her eyes forward. Which was strange on its own because after catching her with the Yamanaka, Shisui immediately stopped acknowledging her presence. He would only resort in addressing her to prevent anyone from confronting either of them on the matter.
But now, having her this close brought fond memories at the forefront. Along with all the little things — her fresh scent, her large eyes, her dewy lips, the glow to her bronze skin— all of which made her so damn enchanting. He would be a liar if he said that he didn't miss her. Kyori was great company and despite her tough act and constant knack to shoot him down, he truly loved her as a friend.
Shisui recognized her best qualities were some of her some of her faults. She wasn't very honest, or the nicest person but Shisui liked to think he understood how guarded she was and why. Kyori was very caring, resilient yet fragile, and she was constantly frustrated with herself, mostly. But that's why he was so drawn to her in the first place.
Even though she had hurt and disappointed him.
The Uchiha gripped the steering wheel and inwardly cursed himself and finally Izumi for putting him in this predicament. His eyes quickly engulfed the view beside him as he watched Kyori fiddling with red and white ribbons. She took her time with the delicate fabrics, trying to make them perfect.
"You didn't have to bring anything," he stated, now looking at the road ahead of him.
Kyori's shoulders squared as she hadn't expected him to say anything. Slowly she brought her chocolate gaze in his general direction briefly.
"Well, I wanted to." She shrugged, lowering her gaze onto her lap. There was no way she could face him without turning into a piece of self-loathing mulch as she inwardly yearned for a solution.
The unruly haired teen nodded, turning up the dial once the girl place her hands between her thighs for warmth.
"So," Shisui paused, beginning to think having small talk was a bad idea the second he heard a familiar song on the radio. Kyori also seemed to notice and her thoughts drowned out the present, going back to their date.
"Never see you on your own, but you're alone. Don't know why the need to fix you turns me on. Think whoever took your heart is gone forever …"
The first thing she remembered was the way those calculative dark eyes bore into her, like he could see her every thought. The next, was the way he held her. His hands were never too rough or perverse… just there, keeping her secured.
"I act so cool but that's not me. Still not the one you choose to see. I don't ever wanna let you go, no..."
The third, she easily recalled their proximity, burning up as images of their lips growing closer while she danced against him. And lastly, she remembered it all went to shit.
"Turn it," Kyori bit out.
"Why? It's a good song!"
"You always look for somethin' new. I hope I get my turn with you. I don't ever wanna let you go, no. Mat–"
"What did you do that for!?" Shisui quirked a brow, lightly sneering when she took it upon herself to turn off the radio and glare daggers at him.
"Can you just… drive!" Kyori scowled and huffed, shifting in her seat. As she turned to look out the window, her heart sputtered within her chest when he frowned at her. "Please," she whispered with hints of guilt in her tone.
The Uchiha shook his head, gritting his teeth to stop himself for saying anything too brash. Shisui wanted to avoid conflict as much as possible, so he gave up on trying to lighten the mood. He could tell Kyori was deeply upset. And while he had no clue as to why, for some reason he wanted to know. Surprising them both, Shisui pulled over on the side of the road and shut off the car before giving her his full attention.
"What's wrong with you?!" beseeched, he turned to her with those calculative pits of coal, trying to understand why she was acting like he was the one to break her heart.
"Nothing."
"Okay, well if it's nothing," Shisui emphasized, making quotation gestures. "Then why are you so upset?" the question alone, caused the girl to scoff.
"Don't act like you don't know!" she blurted, her scowl deepening. "Afterall, it's been you ever since we've met!"
Affronted by her peeved tone, Shisui's eye brows raised in disbelief. "What the hell are you even going on about? Since day one, I've been nothing but kind to you."
"Shisui," Kyori tried glowering fiercely when she found his words to be true. He was more than kind, he was good to her… Shaking her head, the Shimura huffed momentarily while working out an apology. "It's nothing, okay? I'm sorry."
She felt so angry, despite all that she said, he was not the cause. Shisui just happened to be a common denominator in her recent problems with her father, and of course, her love life. But even she knew this anger was caused by inner issues she hasn't dealt with. And now, she was acting irrational and taking it out on him.
"Don't apologize, just be honest." The raven haired teen frowned. "What's really eating at you?"
Kyori stared down at her clasped hands, gaining the Uchiha's attention. "You," she whispered, feeling her cheeks grow hot.
She reluctantly peered through her curled lashes, deep cedar brown fixed on endless, midnight black orbs, making him a bit uncomfortable. He tried to look away, but there was something deep within that demanded his attention.
"It's just that— I want to be with you."
"Kyori that's…" Shisui gaped as found himself fumbling with his own feelings as well as a response.
The Shimura felt as though her heart shriveled up when he was quick to start up the car and drive instead of saying something. Anything.
But how could he when she said those kind of things? And so earnestly too? God, he wanted to believe that she wanted him, and to give her the benefit of the doubt. No matter how he looked at it, she may have made a mistake but the damage wasn't something that could be brushed off so easily with 's decision disrespected all that he stood for, and she violated the little trust he had in her, along with the assurance that came with owning up to his faults. He wanted to snub her and be petty and yet, her words brought him small bouts of happiness and questions until he remembered seeing her with Fu.
The thought of her just saying these things because she angered the Yamanaka was nauseating, bringing Shisui to doubt her entirely. Knowing Kyori, if it weren't for Fu prancing around with Maki, she probably would never say those words.
"That's flattering, but you're just so hurt over Fu that you'll resort to anything to forget him." The Uchiha kept his eyes forward and he shook his head at her, gripping the steering wheel while tactlessly murmuring, "You think want to be with me, but you don't."
Shisui's words lingered throughout her mind, shattering all forms of hope with the certainty in his tone and it made her want to wretch. Her earnest feelings were just flattering… and what hurts the most was how he dismissive and insensitive he was being. Not only had he insinuated but he put emphasis on invalidating her feelings. Shisui wouldn't even take how she felt into consideration and the only one to blame was herself.
'Maybe I'm just so lonely… and so unloved that I throw myself at anyone who wants me? Just like back then.' she pondered, breaking her own heart as she started to doubt her own feelings. Kyori stared absently at the road while hot tears welled, blurring her vision until they poured. It felt like she was crumbling, completely cracked down the middle.
"Kyori, please…" Shisui flinched at the watery daggers she glared into him. He got the message, loud and clear.
Shut up and drive.
But as he drove in silence, he hoped that they would get through this someday. He didn't like playing the bad guy, but if it bought her enough time to figure out what she wanted then so be it.
Ochaaa here!
It looks like we have our first time skip~
Now instead of working it out, Kyori and Shisui would rather play pretend and keep their big split confidential. And during all that time apart, not only does the girl finally acknowledges what she's done.. she also confesses! Only for Shisui to shoot her down for both of their sakes. It looks like he's okay with being the bad guy if it means she'll keep her head straight; it sounds like it's coming from a good place. What can possibly happen next?
Will Shisui have a change of heart and allow the sleep over be their saving grace? Or will the truth be revealed to Izumi and cause another well-built bridge to burn?
May we all find out later on, so make sure to favorite it, flame it, book it or keep it in your history (mobile users).
