Chapter 21
Adam felt strange. The agony from his shattered wings continued to shoot throughout his body in pulsating waves; they were painfully suffocating yet distant while his body was eerily slack, obedient to the sinner's command. Each breath came in slowly, his chest rising and falling like a gentle tide. His mind, once filled with panic and desperation, now floated adrift in a sea of silence, thoughts dulled as he weakly gazed at Vox's eyes, drawn to the one eye with the hypnotic swirls.
"That's it… just relax," Vox's voice was a distant static, yet it held a tight grip on his mind. Vox continued to hold Adam's head with a satisfied smile while Val was busy on his phone, texting with a frown. "Now, Adam… let's see what's inside that head of yours, shall we?" Vox's left eye glowed brighter, causing Adam's eyes to do the same.
For a moment, Adam was surrounded in complete darkness, and he wasn't sure how long he was there until he found himself completely healed with his golden wings and standing on a stage, gazing out at the immense crowd of human souls in front of him, with glares that held nothing but hatred.
One human stepped forward. "You're a monster!" Before Adam could respond, a ripe tomato struck him square in the face with a sickening splat. He recoiled in shock as the acidic juice stung his teary eyes and ran down his cheeks.
"Murderer!" another voice screamed, and another tomato followed, landing on his torso this time. Adam stared in shock as people threw more fruits at him, making no attempt to cover himself.
"You killed my parents!" Yet another voice cried out.
Someone threw a single cupcake in his face. And then he saw her – Molly, tears streaming down her cheeks as she glared at him sadly. "You're a monster," she spat.
As more people joined in lashing at Adam, he felt the pain in his heart grow worse, as if each word hurled at him pierced a dagger through it. He couldn't take it anymore. Breathing became difficult, teeth clenched in agony as he fled to backstage, heart pounding and completely shaken. Pressed against the wall, he tried to calm his racing thoughts, but then he saw Lepin and his band, their eyes accusatory. Emerging from behind them was Emily and Lute, their gaze like ice as she stepped closer.
Adam reached out to them. "Please, I… I'm sorry, I… I need your help…"
"Sera was right," Emily said, causing Adam to stare with confusion. "You're not my brother. You're not my family."
Adam stepped away from them, his eyes glazing over with unshed tears.
"You're nothing but a monster," Lute said, her face scrunching up in disgust.
"And we don't want you here anymore."
Emily and Lute fade away, along with everyone else. Everything shifted around him, and in the blink of an eye, Adam found himself perched atop a tower, facing Lilith in the Garden of Eden. Then Lucifer stood in front of her protectively, surrounded by countless angels as Moro shouted with rage, freezing Adam with terror. Helplessly, he watched as a red portal materialized, shallowing Lilith and Lucifer whole, with Eve reaching out for them.
"Do exactly as we say, Adam, and you will not be discarded like Lilith," Moro's voice whispered in his ears, making him tremble with nausea. Then he found himself perched atop a tower overlooking the silent city of Heaven below.
He stared down at the empty street. There was no human soul or angel in sight.
"So, you're telling me you would go to sit on that tower, waiting, alone, for a thousand of years until another human arrived…?" Vaggie's voice echoed in the surrounding air, causing his chest to tighten with anxiety as he clenched his eyes shut, trying to block out the voice and his surroundings.
"This… isn't real," he muttered to himself, his voice trembling as he gripped a fistful of his hair tightly.
"It wasn't a thousand years, you idiot," his own voice countered from afar.
"Adam… No other human joined you in heaven for over a thousand years. It's written in the records."
Adam gritted his teeth in frustration. "It's all fucking lies," he spat. "It wasn't a fucking thousand years!" He screamed, causing everything to grow dark.
"But it's not a lie, is it, Adam?" a dark voice asked in amusement, making him glance around in annoyance to find who was messing with him. "And it seemed even when others joined you in Heaven, you were still alone."
"I'm begging you, please, don't leave me here alone," he heard his own trembling voice from an old memory reaching his ears. His eyes widened as he watched a scene play before him, a replication of himself on his knees, holding his broken arm close to his chest, his body trembling with Sera and the other high-ranking angels loomed over him. "I can't bear to be alone again. Sera, please, don't do this to me."
Adam slowly backed away from the memory, his heart beating faster.
"See?" the dark voice chuckled. "You know, the truth deep inside… You were alone for so long."
"I can't bear to be alone again." The words replayed in his own voice again, prompting Adam to blast the scene before him with his golden beam. But that only caused the cityscape to return. This time, he was in the streets, alone once more.
"I can't bear to be alone again."
Adam quickly flew to a shop, barging in to find it empty. He tried another, but it, too, was vacant.
"I can't bear…"
Adam shot up to the skies, screaming for someone, but only silence answered.
"…to be alone…"
Adam blasted the entire city with frustration.
"…again…"
"Stop messing with my head!" he screamed out of desperation.
"I'll admit, your mind is very powerful," Vox's voice reached him, making Adam flee as far as he could from the city. "Especially having blocked so much of those years. You must have felt so lonely, so devastated, as you had to wait, and wait, and wait… with no one but yourself for company… for a thousand endless years…"
"Leave me alone!" Adam yelled at him as he flew over a large forest. He wasn't sure where he was going, but he wanted to be as far away as he could from the city.
"No, I won't let you run away… not this time," Vox said with a chuckle. Suddenly, the forest vanished, and Adam was once again in the city, this time chained to the roof by all four limbs. He struggled against the restraints, but they held him firmly in place.
"Stop hiding the truth!"
The ground of the city cracked open, and dark strings shot forth from the gaping hole, shooting up to latch onto Adam and wrapping around his body tightly.
Suddenly, memories began flooding into Adam's mind. A whirlwind of all the images and emotions that he tried so hard to push away clawed their way into him. His eyes widened in horror as he remembered them all too well, the days and 'nights' spent alone, waiting in vain for someone, anyone, to reach out to him, to hold him, to rescue him from his suffering.
The pain in his chest became unbearable as he relieved the endless years of loneliness. Memories of his time on Earth faded into insignificance compared to the overwhelming isolation that had defined so much of his existence.
With trembling hands, Adam reached up to clutch at his head, as if trying to hold himself together as the terrible memories consumed him. But no matter how hard he tried to push them away, they continued to cling to him.
The few good memories were now nothing more than a slight blip in his life, his music and the people who he cared for nothing more than a hallucination. Tears streamed down his face as he drowned in despair, sobbing uncontrollably as he pressed his head against the ground.
"Stop, please, just stop," Adam begged sadly. His mind was falling apart. The memories and emotions were too much to bear. He screamed for the agony in his soul to end, only to find himself back in the cold stone chamber, trembling as he felt his soul shattering into pieces.
Hot tears streamed down from Adam's eyes seemingly to no end. His gaze was weak as he stared at Vox's hypnotizing eye, his chest heaving with the effort to hold back the sobs that dared to escape past his lips. He was completely shaken by the memories he had so desperately tried to forget burning into his mind.
Meanwhile, Val was delighted to see Adam shedding tears. "Finally…." He had been waiting about an hour, sitting in boredom.
"I'm not done yet," Vox said. His grip still held Adam's face in place as his eye glowed bright again. "But I'm almost there…"
"Find me…" Not-Eve whispered in his ears. Adam mentally begged for Sera again. Holding on any longer seemed impossible for him. He cried for Sera desperately, then suddenly everything shifted around him, and the golden gates of Heaven appeared. He was then surrounded by Sera and the other high-ranking Seraphim angels.
Adam stared at them all with wide, teary eyes.
They… they actually heard his call?
They actually came for him?
A sob escaped his lips as he struggled to rise to his feet, his ankles burning with pain and his broken wings sending electric shocks through his body. Despite the agony, he stood, desperate not to appear pathetic in front of them, and looked up at the angels, who wore bitter expressions.
Even though the angels didn't seem happy to see him, Adam felt a flicker of hope when he found Sera's gaze, believing she had teleported him away to save him.
Sera approached him, causing him to inch close to her, his shoulders hunched as he trembled. With a firm grip, she grasped his chin, forcing him to meet her gaze.
"Sera…" Adam whispered, his voice broken with sadness and longing. Tears shimmering down his sore cheeks. Though surprised that she had her hand on him, he leaned into her touch as he silently cried out in relief; the last time he had seen her, she had said farewell and simply left him, and he didn't think he would actually ever see her again. He'd never been so happy to see her.
She, however, stared at him with an icy detachment, her lip curled in disdain as she abruptly let go of him and turned and walked away from him without a word. The rejection left Adam standing there, his eyes wide with anguish.
"She's not your mother, Adam," Moro's voice cut through the silence. He felt his heart constrict painfully at Moro's words. "We're not your parents."
Adam struggled to suppress more sobs, his shoulders shaking under Moro's gaze. "I know…" he whispered sadly; his voice hoarse.
"And you're no longer our great Adam," Moro continued cruelly, causing Adam to let out a sob as his head dropped, his heart getting crushed. "You're nothing but a disappointment."
More tears trailed down Adam's cheeks as he struggled to speak, the pains in his ankles too unbearable to ignore, causing him to collapse to his knees. "I… I tried…" he choked out. "I tried really hard."
"Did you though?"
Adam brushed away his tears with his shoulder as he nodded sadly. "Please… Moro…sir," He begged, desperation in his eyes. "Please, I'll be good… I promise I'll be better. Please, take me back, please. It hurts, everything hurts so badly. I can't hold on any longer. Please… please…"
Moro's stare bore into him. "You are our greatest mistake ever made."
Slowly, the angels vanished, leaving Adam alone. He cried for them, feeling completely abandoned, just as he did weeks before. He screamed their names but received no response. And once again he was on the concrete floor, breaking down into sobs, believing Sera and the others have truly given up on him and thrown him back to his tormentors.
Everything - the terrible memories, the pain in his body, soul, and mind - was too much for him to endure. He wanted it all to stop, but he knew there was no way he could ever be happy again. He had failed Heaven, became nothing but a monster, a mistake, and was now left alone to suffer for all eternity.
"And there you go," Vox said to Val as he pulled away from Adam, who was falling apart. Rivers of tears streamed down Adam's face as he wept.
Val chuckled and conjured a carpet on the ground, sitting down before gathering Adam's broken, naked form in his lap. He hushed him, pulled him close, cradling him in his arms with a mocking smirk.
To his surprise, Adam leaned into Val, burying his face against Val's neck. Despite the pain of being held, Adam desperately craved human contact, yearning for anyone to hold him as if that would keep him together. His boy trembled with emotion as well as from the pain shooting through his body and the cold room.
Val chuckled softly, his breath warm against Adam's ear. "You'll be my favorite now and forever," he whispered. "I'll take good care of you…I promise." Gently lifting Adam's face to meet his gaze, Val brushed a finger across Adam's cheek, attempting to wipe away the tears that stained his face. Adam's lips quivered sadly.
Val then closed the distance between them, his lips pressing hungrily against Adam's, his hand caressing Adam's naked leg. Despite the tears still lingering in his eyes, Adam closed them, surrendering to Val because of the fear of rejection in this vulnerable moment; he wanted Val to hold him close, even though it felt extremely wrong. Val's tongue forced itself into Adam's mouth, sending Adam feel nauseous as Val explored every inch of his mouth, leaving no corner untouched.
He truly was in Hell…
The assault was abruptly halted as the chamber doors swung open, eliciting a hiss of irritation from Val. He pulled Adam close to him, shielding him from view as Adam's weak gaze lifted to meet Angel's wide-eyed expression of shock. Cherri, who stood beside her friend, also looked disturbed at what she was witnessing. Two large sinners stood behind them.
"Oh, look at that. You've decided to show up at the least convenient time," Val remarked coldly, his tone laced with infuriation.
"Adam...?" Angel's voice trembled with disbelief, his gaze locked on Adam's broken form as the fallen angel buried his face into Val's chest. The sinner took in Adam's crooked wings, the cuffs on Adam's joints, and the collar around his neck.
Shame washed over Adam, intensifying the overwhelming anguish already weighing heavily on his soul as Angel continued to stare at him. He desperately wanted to hide, wanting Val to cover him with all four arms to shield him from everyone's eyes.
"What the hell have you done to him?!" Angel's voice finally erupted with rage.
Val chuckled dismissively, his hand caressing Adam's leg again, a bit soothingly and possessively, causing Angel to throw himself in their direction, only to be held back by the two guards.
"No need to be jealous, my sweet angel," Val started, his tone slow and amused. He had texted Angel to come into the room, though he planned for him to arrive after he had won over Adam's soul, to show his new 'toy' to Angel as a parting surprise after freeing him. "I know you're going to miss me… then again, nothing can stop you from visiting me."
"What the fuck are you talking about?!" Angel yelled back, struggling against the two sinners.
Val chuckled, producing a contract before Angel's eyes. Angel's brows furrowed, and he skimmed through the unfamiliar document, his eyes widening as he took in the terms and the two signatures at the bottom.
Slowly, Angel turned to Cherri with despair.
Cherri dared to smile at him. "You're finally going to be free after all these years," she said.
Angel continued to stare at her in shock, which prompted a frown from Cherri.
"What?" Cherri asked with annoyance. "You've wanted this for so long, didn't ya?"
"Are you out of your damn mind?!" Angel snapped at her. "How could you think this was okay?! What the hell were you even thinking, Cherri? Where in your damn head did you think I'd ever want someone else to take my place as Val's slave?!"
"What the hell is your problem, Angie? Who gives a shit if the asshole's soul is being given up for you? This is the same dickhead who killed our friend."
"God damn it, Cherri! Don't give me that bullshit! Sir Pentious was my friend! You didn't give two shits about him until I told you he had two fucking dicks!"
"That's not fucking true."
"You know it is! And you know what Val is capable of, the terrible shit he does to his slaves! How could you do this? I've been trying to help Adam, not destroy him!" Angel screamed, completely losing control of his emotions by this point.
Val conjured a new contract and then inserted a pen into Adam's weak hand, causing Angel to panic.
"Adam, listen to me. Don't sign that contract!" Angel pleaded, his eyes growing wider every second as fear ran through his soul. He spotted the chains on Adam's limbs, knowing full well that Val had tortured Adam to push him into giving his soul up. "You have to listen to me. I swear on my goddamn life I'll get you out."
Adam felt tears escape his eyes again as he heard Angel's voice, which sounded as if he truly cared for him.
"Adam, look at me," Angel begged, tears welling up in his eyes.
Cherri stared at her friend with confusion and grew more perplexed when she saw Adam weakly gaze at Angel, tears streaming down his face. Something in her chest twisted rather painfully at their interaction.
"Please, don't do it! I'll get you out of here!" Angel continued to plead. "I swear, you'll be back at the hotel, safe, with me, Charlie, and Husk. We won't let anyone hurt you!"
Adam recalled Angel's warm embrace, which was much more different than Val's. A glimmer of hope flickered in his eyes, angering Val, who signaled for the guards to drag Angel away.
"Let me go!" Angel struggled against the guards violently. "Adam! Please, don't sign that contract, I beg you. I promise you I'll get you out of here. I swear, don't sign it!"
Cherri watched Angel's desperate plea, then turned her gaze to Adam, who was being forced to look into Vox's hypnotizing gaze again. Whatever Vox was showing Adam caused him to break down into more tears and lose the tiny light he had gained from Angel's words.
"You know… I could teach ya." The memory of Adam telling her he would teach her guitar replayed in her mind. He hadn't even asked for anything in return. Cherri's chest clenched, cursing under her breath as she balled her hands into fists before storming out of the room.
Val's impatience boiled over as he tried to force Adam to hold on to the pen, only to find that Adam's fingers could barely move because of the damaged joint. Frustration etched across Val's features as he groaned.
"Fuckin' course," Val muttered under his breath.
Vox rolled his eyes before swiftly producing a key to undo the cuff from Adam's injured wrist. As the cuff fell away, Adam whimpered in agony as Vox quickly removed the sharp object from his joint, causing a trail of blood to ooze from the mangled and torn up tissue. Vox tore a strip from Adam's torn shirt to staunch the bleeding, wrapping it tightly around the damaged wrist.
Val wasted no time pressuring Adam to sign his name to the contract. Leaning in close, he whispered a menacing threat, promising solitary confinement if Adam refused, causing Adam's heart to painfully race fearfully.
It took a considerable long time for Adam to write even a letter on the contract. It was barely eligible, and it pained him so much as he did so.
"That's it, good boy," Val cooed soothingly, his hands tracing gentle patterns across Adam's legs, urging him on.
Eventually, Adam completed his signature, but before Val and Vox could celebrate their victory, the contract didn't light up bright to seal the deal. Instead, it slowly turned black before their eyes then dissolved into nothing but ash, as if it had spontaneously combusted.
The room was dead silent, broken only by Adam's weak, labored breathing, while the overlords stared in utter confusion as the ashes simply faded away.
"What the fuck?" Val uttered out after a long moment. "What the hell was that?!"
As Vox tried to make sense of what had just taken place, a strange unease settled in his stomach. He had seen contracts not allowing someone to finish signing their name if they've already sold their souls to someone else. However, he'd never seen a contract just turn black and turn into ash. Something about it felt completely off.
Meanwhile, Val shoved Adam to the ground with brute force. He screamed down at the fallen angel before kicking his ribs multiple times, each blow eliciting cries of hurt. "Who did you give your soul to, bastardo?!" Val's voice reverberated with fury as he continued to mercilessly attack Adam, who curled up and whimpered in pain, trying his best to use his arms to shield himself.
Vox stared at the scene before him. Couldn't believe their plan had failed. If they couldn't own Adam's soul, then they were in serious trouble…
Vox sprang forward, shoving Val to the side before seizing Adam's face once more, locking eyes with him in a hypnotic trance.
"Repeat after me," Vox commanded firmly, his voice tinged with desperation. "You are nothing."
Adam's tear-streaked eyes met Vox's gaze, his voice trembling. "I... am nothing," he murmured softly.
Val frowned at Vox for being rudely pushed aside but grew curious at what he was doing.
"You are nothing without Valentino," Vox continued.
Adam sobbed as he repeated Vox's words, feeling himself falling further apart.
"Stop crying and repeat after me, you are Valentino's!" Vox pressed on, his voice commanding. "Repeat, you are Valentino's, and you are nothing without him!"
Adam's voice quivered as he complied, his sense of self slipping away with each repetition.
"Again, you are nothing!"
"I am nothing," Adam whispered, his voice barely audible.
"Hey, I don't want some mindless puppet," Val retorted, glaring at Vox.
"We have no choice right now," Vox retorted irately as he glowered back at Val. "I told you, he's not like your other weak-minded pets. I'm not going to risk him regaining his will and getting revenge on us." He turned back to Adam, determined to break Adam's mind completely. "Everything that has made you happy, the music, the people, the memories, lock them all up," he instructed. "The only one that can bring you happiness is Valentino. You need Valentino."
Adam's clouded with filled with despair as he slowly surrendered to Vox's manipulation. He continued to repeat the phrases Vox wanted him to say, over and over, until Vox finally pulled away.
Vox stood up and turned to Val. "I'm going to need more time with him, but for now, I'm going to call Velvette and Carmilla. Under no circumstances should anyone else know about Adam's location until we can ensure he won't break free from us, or that no one else can get their hands on him." Before leaving the room, Vox handed Val the remote to Adam's devices.
Val frowned deeply as he glared down at Adam, who continued to weep silently while staring blankly at nothing in the room, his body still trembling.
Adam found himself completely lost, as if trapped in a dark fog. He was so exhausted, in too much pain. He had a strong desire for Val to hold him, but he could barely move a muscle, couldn't find it in himself to speak.
Val went to the cart and retrieved a silver dagger then used his magic to manipulate the chains, causing one to connect Adam's left wrist back to the ceiling while another dangled from above, hooking onto Adam's collar. As the chains lifted Adam by his wrist and neck, his wings hung limply on his back.
Positioning himself behind Adam, Val pulled one of Adam's legs towards him, exposing the back of the knee. "I hate being stuck with a crippled pet… But I'm going make damn sure there's no way for you to escape. Nor will anyone else take you," Val muttered darkly, pressing the point of the dagger into Adam's muscle. His eyes widened with a sadistic grin. "Don't hold back, mi hombrecito, I love it when you sing to me." he plunged the dagger into Adam's hamstring, blood bursting out.
Adam's body convulsed as he let out a gut-wrenching scream of agony, the sound stifled by the strain on his neck from the ceiling chain. His muscles tensed and spasmed uncontrollably, his broken wings twitching involuntarily in response.
Before Val could drive the dagger any deeper, screams and other noises erupted from above them, causing Val to tense. Suddenly, a portion of the ceiling began to disintegrate into small particles, and a blinding light flashed into the room, making Val wince. He pulled away from Adam, using his arms to shield himself from the light, annoyed by the disruption.
As Adam weakly panted and felt the fresh pain shooting up from his leg, beads of sweat trailing down his body, he slowly opened his eyes when the brightness dimmed, gradually making out Lucifer standing in the room, staring at him in shock. Adam's eyes welled up with more tears and widened when he saw Sera, who had a look of profound shock on her face as she stared at him.
Adam let out a strangled sob, shutting his eyes as he couldn't bear to witness Sera growing in disgust at his pathetic, broken state.
Val, who eventually realized who stood before him and the danger he was in, quickly moved behind Adam again, wrapping his arms around him while holding the tip of the dagger threateningly close to Adam's throat.
"I'll fucking kill him, I swear," Val threatened desperately. "This is angel steel. I'll fucking kill him if you come any closer."
After staring at Adam for a long moment, her mind still processing what she was seeing, Sera glanced at Val, her eyes turning dark. Slowly, her entire body morphed, countless eyes flashing open on her wings, hair, and halo, all glowing with an uncontrollable rage. A bright red energy surrounded her as she continued to glare venomously at Val.
At first, it seemed as if nothing was happening, but then Val's body glowed, and from the tips of his fingers, they started to become nothing but tiny particles, disintegrating into dust. Val's eyes widened in horror as he backed away from Adam, the dagger falling from his disappearing hand.
"What... what the fuck are you doing to me?!" Val panicked as his body continued to fade away into nothing but dirt.
Sera held her icy gaze, filled with hatred, as he continued to dissipate. She ignored his please as Val continued to become a pile of dust on the ground, black just like his soul.
As Adam heard Val's screams die down, his body went slack, and he mentally braced himself for what was coming, believing Sera had come to end him as well, or much worse, since he was now nothing but a mistake in the eyes of Heaven. And honestly, he didn't see any point in living anymore. He had completely given up. He'd become something pathetic, disgusting, weak, and awful, so there was no reason he should be allowed to continue living. But he was terrified that his final moments wouldn't be as quick and painless as he hoped.
Hot tears continued to stream down his face as he sobbed quietly, no longer willing to plead. He waited for more agony to consume him whole when suddenly… it took him a moment to realize what he was feeling: warmth.
With utter confusion and hesitation, he slowly opened his eyes and weakly gazed up to find Sera holding him close, the chains that once bound him falling from the ceiling as he crumpled into her tender embrace.
Sera knelt, careful not to disturb the wounds on his body, and gently shifted Adam until he was lying upon her lap, cradling him close to her chest while Lucifer conjured gauze and began wrapping it around Adam's injured leg to slow down the bleeding.
"I'm here, Adam," she whispered to him quietly. "I'm here…"
He tried to make sense of what was happening, asking himself if he was being deceived, Her soothing words and the warmth of her body that enveloped him like a protective blanket left im feeling lost, but slowly he felt a rush of mixed emotions flooding through him, once again causing him to let out another broken sob. His face buried in her chest, hoping he wasn't hallucinating, hoping so badly that it all to be real.
As he nestled closer, he took in her scent: soft lavender, just as he believed it would be. Never had Sera ever held him in his existence. She barely even touched him, always keeping him at arm's length, as if he were never worthy, even though he had felt a connection between them, one that he had buried deep inside long ago.
Now, as he was held in her protective embrace, he felt warmth unlike any other. Tears trickled down his cheeks, but this time from an overwhelming bliss that he never thought he would ever have in his life, especially after falling.
Despite believing that he was nothing to her now, or was some pet in her eyes, fearing her wrath and that of the other high-ranking angels, Adam couldn't hold back the word that yearned to escape him after everything that had happened to him in the past weeks in a trembling, weak voice: "M-mom..."
For a fleeting moment, Adam felt Sera go still. He was ready for her to shove him away, but instead, she drew him closer, tighter, as if unwilling to let him slip away. It was a gesture that made Adam close his eyes, curl up even more, cry even harder into her embrace while she gently pressed her cheek against his forehead. In that moment, he allowed himself to experience the last comfort he thought he'll ever have in his existence and the motherly affection he had always longed for from her.
Just once, he would believe Sera loved him…
