If any of you young authors out there ever write a multi-chapter fan fiction like this, you really need to be sure that it's one you'll absolutely stick with, and not abruptly end for frivolous reasons. Otherwise, you'd risk not only losing your potential audience, but also worsen your reputation as a writer.

That's a lesson I've been learning the hard way. Multiple times, even.

Hello, this is Psychid, and I have returned to present to you attempt number umpteen at the kind of story I've been more than eager to write ever since joining this site back in February 2006: Lo and behold, Yu-Gi-Oh! CHRONIXII

Compared to most of this story's previous versions, the overall premise will be significantly different. More specifically, this is gonna be a multi-multi-crossover story, and I really do mean "multi-multi-crossover." You'll see what crossovers will be involved as the story progresses, but I will say that I intend to go above and beyond with the "multi-multi-crossover" aspect of it all, especially with what I was truly inspired by prior to going this route.

Additionally, this story's duels will be centered around a completely custom-made format known as the "Game Duel" format. You'll see how it works in the chapter that first introduces it, but the best way to describe it is to imagine the rules for Yu-Gi-Oh! Rush Duel, but with a few unconventional elements taken directly from some rather obscure YGO video games of old. However, this format will include cards that are already present in either the real-life card game or are exclusive to the YGO anime/manga, and any newly introduced cards will be properly showcased at the end of each chapter (with a few exceptions, to prevent potential spoilers), along with any additional notes.

With that said, after presenting the following synopsis and disclaimer, I hope you enjoy Yu-Gi-Oh! CHRONIXII!

CHRONIXII; they all belong to their respective owners. This story is nonprofit, and therefore made for entertainment purposes only. Please support the official release.

It was a dark and stormy night, as the old saying goes.

Actually, it was raining rather hard, with some occasional thunderstorms. The exact location was a high-tech corporation that almost resembled a clock tower. Inside the laboratory located on the top floor, a large group of scientists were at their computers, feverishly working on some kind of project.

Whatever this project was, nobody knew but them. But it wasn't long before the sliding doors opened, a man in his late thirties entering the laboratory. He had long, pale blonde hair tied into a miniature ponytail, and wore a pair of sunglasses. His attire was simply a black tuxedo. "What's the overall progress?" he demanded. "I need a status check, pronto!"

"Everything is close to completed, Mr. Giichi, sir," one of the lab technicians reported, hastily interacting with him. "If all goes smoothly and the storm doesn't disrupt our operation, the simulation should be completed just before the official launch tomorrow morning."

"And are there any viruses or potential malware in the program or servers?"

"Negative. We've scanned the entire program and its servers from top to bottom with the best and most reliable antivirus software our money could buy."

"Good. If this is to succeed, its functionality must be absolutely foolproof! Now, back to your post – I want this project completed, post-haste!"

"Yes, sir!" the lab technician obeyed, saluting his superior.

As the technician returned, Giichi was about to exit from where he came, but a female intern stopped him. "Mr. Giichi, sir?" she worriedly asked him. "At the risk of angering you… are you sure you really want to go through with all this?"

"Absolutely," Giichi sternly replied. He placed his hands on the intern's shoulders, a sense of chilling discomfort running down her spine. "I've put a lot of time and effort into creating this, especially with its true highlight. I can't let all that I've worked hard for, all of my tireless efforts, all that I hope to accomplish, go to waste!"

"But… but sir! With some of the decisions you've made, it may give your intended audience bad impressions! Think about your reputation! The reputation of your company!"

"I am aware that there will be some who won't take too kindly to this – but I don't give a damn! What matters is that my vision shall become reality!"

"Sir…"

"We shall discuss this no further," Giichi firmly stated, exiting through the sliding doors. The intern said nothing, but sighed as she returned to her desk.

Giichi, meanwhile, went back to his office, locking the door behind him. After returning to his desk, he pressed a special code on a virtual keyboard built into the desk's surface, and a virtual screen popped open. It was dark green with spring green markings, written in an otherworldly language that only he could understand.

"Soon…" he said silently.

YU-GI-OH! CHRONIXII

LEVEL 1 START

LEVEL 1-1
GAME DUEL, GAME START!

Fourteen-year-old Mira Yukiko suddenly found herself in her own dream.

At least, that's what she thought it was.

How could it not be a dream? Every dream had some form of abnormality. Plus, one would commonly find themselves in their own dream – and in some cases, wearing something different from their regular attire. In Mira's case, she found herself in her nightwear, consisting of a midriff-bearing camisole top and sleep shorts, both of which were black. But this particular dream was nowhere close to the kind of dream that she – or anyone else, for that matter – would have. Almost everyone's dream would involve something lively, even if out of the ordinary, and the presence of mind to question it was barely a whisper. But for Mira, all that she saw through her red eyes was pitches of blackness… and nothing else.

Actually, she did notice something nearby. In an instant, she jerked her head, her shoulder-length burgundy hair following the movement. What caught her attention was a portal of yellow light – a sickly yellow, to be exact. Dropping down from the portal was an ovular stone about half her size. Upon the stone's landing, a ripple of the same sickly yellow formed. Mira wanted to get a closer examination of the stone, but for some reason, she found herself unable to move her legs. To her surprise, a second stone fell, creating the same ripple upon its landing. Then a third stone fell… then a fourth… then a fifth… This strange sequence lasted for six more stones.

Afterwards, a twelfth stone fell. But instead of a ripple like the others, its landing created a circle of shining golden light. With the circle's formation, the other eleven stones lifted off the ground, and slowly hovered away from each other in different directions. Once each of the stones was at a fair distance away from each other, they slowly floated down, each one creating a smaller golden circle upon its landing. Mira found herself standing on one of the circles. After the golden circles were formed, they were connected by lines of the same color. The result was the shape of a cross with four short lines between the cross's vertical and horizontal ones.

But just when things couldn't get any stranger, the stone in the center circle suddenly changed from marble to pitch black, and the circle underneath changed from heavenly gold to blood red. These changes in color disintegrated the lines and the other ovular stones, while the other circles of light remained intact, albeit less luminously than before. In the center circle, seven smaller versions of the now corrupted stone stuck out from beneath.

At this point, all of this absurdity was becoming too much for Mira. But then, she saw six ovular crystals dropping down from the sky, each one a different color from the other. They surrounded the corrupted stones upon their landing. Once they did, the seven corrupted stones disintegrated, as did the original corrupted stone soon after.

"Mira… Yukiko…!" a female voice spoke out of nowhere. It sounded computerized – odd, given the supposed mystical setting of Mira's dream.

"Wh-who said that?!" Mira asked, hastily turning her head back and forth.

"You have… been… been chosen… to save these worlds… and mine…!" the voice spoke, cracking as it started to sound more like static.

"But… but I don't even know what's going on!"

"Our time… grows short… only the six… can stop…" The voice was unable to finish.

"What 'six'?! Stop what?!" Mira screamed. To her shock, the eleven remaining stones disintegrated, and she plummeted into the depths below.

"WHAT THE HELL IS ALL THIS?!"

Mira awoke with a yelp. Almost immediately, she looked around as she breathed heavily, sweating almost abundantly and feeling her heart pounding. To her relief, she didn't see any pitches of blackness, or any falling rocks for that matter. All she saw was an ordinary bedroom – the same bedroom she had known almost half her life.

What's more, it was about nine o'clock in the morning when she abruptly awoke, so she didn't have to worry about going back to sleep for any further nightmares. Regardless, she was still haunted by the dream she just had, especially with the falling stones and the brief conversation she had with… whoever it was. And it especially didn't help that she had no idea what it all meant, or if it had any meaning to begin with.

"Oy, Mira Yukiko!" a thick female Irish accent called, breaking her concentration. "Your breakfast is ready! You don't want it to get cold, do you?!"

"Oh! Coming!" she called back, proceeding to hurry downstairs to the cafeteria.

It didn't take long before she got to the cafeteria to grab her breakfast of tamagoyaki. But as she was about to head from the counter to the dining tables, she noticed that there weren't as many orphans at the tables as there usually were. "What's going on?" she wondered as she scanned some of the empty tables. "Where's Homanu and Kero?"

"If you're looking for your friends," a female voice spoke, "they finished their breakfasts early, and then hightailed it out of here." The voice belonged to a middle-aged nun with brown eyes and gold-rimmed vintage bifocals. She was the one who called Mira down to breakfast earlier.

"Thanks, Sister Golas," Mira said, sitting at a table close to her caretaker. "Did they say why?" She then proceeded to eating her breakfast.

"From what Kero said," sister Golas explained, "he didn't want to be late for whatever nonsense Giichi's come up with this time…"

Upon hearing the mentioning of Giichi, the astonished Mira spat out some of her food. "Damn it, I totally forgot!" she cried.

"Young lady, please mind your language!" Sister Golas scolded. "Have you forgotten that this hospitable facility is being run by the blessings of God?"

"I'm sorry," Mira said, slightly bowing her head. "It's just that I totally forgot about what's happening today – Giichi Corp's gonna release an entirely new duel format to the public!" Upon hearing her own words, she began to scarf down her breakfast faster than usual.

"Okay, but just be sure you don't choke," Sister Golas warned.

Mira was too excited to heed her warning, but finished her breakfast without incident. Afterwards, she stood up and said, "Sorry, Sister Golas, gotta go!" As she hurried upstairs to her room, Sister Golas playfully sighed as she cleared Mira's dishes.

'I really hope I'm not too late for the premiere,' Mira thought as she quickly walked to her room. 'But whatever this new format may be, I hope it'll make me forget the crap I dreamed about last night!' With that hopeful thought, she closed the door to get changed.

Less than ten minutes later, Mira was now dressed in her everyday attire, consisting of a black vest over a white tattered T-shirt cut to expose her midriff, emblazoned with a purple decal of a cogwheel. She also wore black fingerless gloves reaching just below her elbows, burgundy denim shorts with a black belt, black socks up to her thighs, and completed the ensemble with burgundy slip-on shoes.

As she hastily walked to where the 'new duel format' was to be unveiled, she observed the everyday activities of Alba Litora – her home.

Alba Litora was a megalopolis so technologically advanced it made cities like Neo Domino City look prehistoric. Everywhere a citizen would look, there would be buildings and skyscrapers in various shapes and sizes as far as the eye could see. There were also virtual screens displaying advertisements for all sorts of places – from dining, to shopping, to entertainment. All known everyday transportation vehicles were variations of hovercrafts. The most notable feature of the city, however, was a clock tower that retrained its neo-gothic style and still managed to be futuristic. It was both the largest and the tallest of all the city's known buildings.

Throughout her entire venture, she surveyed all that she could of both the city and its activities, hoping that she would keep her mind off whatever she dreamed about the previous night. But no matter how hard she tried, she kept seeing visions of it – and she still couldn't make any sense of what it might have meant. Who was the mysterious voice that was talking to her? What was this 'six' the voice was referring to? Why did all this have to happen to Mira, of all people? And why was she letting this dream bother her so? The more she thought of that dream, the more frustrated she got.

"DAMN IT, WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?!" she screamed. Little did she realize, until it was too late, that she vented her frustration outside of a stadium resembling the famous Roman Colosseum, only it was just as technologically advanced as the rest of the city. To make matters worse, this just so happened to be where this 'new duel format' was to be unveiled. She caught the unwanted attention of all the other duelists, both young and old, who were here for the premiere. Knowing this much made Mira more than embarrassed, and she ran her fingers across her forehead.

"Mira? Is that you?" a male voice called from the crowd, catching Mira's attention. She turned, and was relieved to catch notice of her friend who just spoke, Homanu Ishako, and her other friend, Kero Nobuyuki.

At first glance, one would expect the brown-eyed Homanu to be a stereotypical street thug of sixteen. It would make sense, given his tall and slightly muscular physique, along with his spiky-cut hair that was red with blond streaks. But in actuality, he was very much kindhearted, and would do anything to protect his friends from any harm, even if it occasionally meant pushing the limits in doing just that. His attire consisted of a tattered red-orange T-shirt, dark gray jeans with holes in the knees, and black boots with light gray soles. His T-shirt's decoration was a black skull and bones surrounded by an orange flame.

Thirteen-year-old Kero met Mira when she first arrived at the orphanage. Although there were times where he irritated her, there were more times where she stood up for him whenever possible. As such, he looked up to her as the caring older sister he never had. Although he was of average height for a boy his age, he was always the shortest of the three friends. He had green eyes, long magenta hair with a wiry ahoge hanging forward, and a cheerful expression planted on his face. He was a good friend to almost anyone, but was occasionally immature. In fact, he was the least mature of the trio. But what Kero lacked in maturity, he more than made up for with an adventurous nature and a passion to never give up. His own attire consisted simply consisted of a silky, white long-sleeved shirt, black jeans, and white sneakers.

"Homanu! Kero!" Mira cried, rushing to join her friends. "Sister Golas told me I'd find you here!"

"Why wouldn't we?!" Kero beamed, bouncing up and down. "Ooh, I've been excited to see this new format ever since Giichi Corp's been teasing us about it – and now it's finally here, Onee-chan!"

"Glad someone's excited…" Homanu murmured, crossing his arms.

"Wait, you're not excited for this new format?" the slightly concerned Mira asked him.

"Not really. I mean, Duel Monsters has already been tainted when they first introduced Pendulum Monsters and Link Monsters. And with the new archetypes and series they've been introducing, they don't make the game as enjoyable as it was before. So what makes you think introducing a whole new format is gonna make things any better?"

"Well, if you're not looking forward to it like the rest of us," Kero teasingly asked, "why did you come to this event anyway, hmm?" He cheekily smirked and placed his head beside Homanu.

"Because," Homanu sternly replied, "Sister Golas insisted that I keep an eye on you, 'cause you're not mature enough to go to these kinds of events on your own."

Hearing this greatly offended Kero. "I am too mature enough!" Kero whined, stamping his left foot in anger. "I am, I am, I AM!"

"Boy, you really showed us," Homanu remarked.

"WHY YOU-"

"Guys, enough!" Mira shouted, ceasing the quarrel. "The last thing I want you guys to do is start another fight! I'm already not in the best of moods…"

"Really?" asked Homanu. "What's bothering you?"

"Yeah, tell us!" Kero added.

Mira sighed through her nostrils, and then motioned her friends to slightly move away from the crowd, which they did. Once she was sure no one would overhear their conversation, she told them about her absurd dream from last night, recounting every single detail. "And the strangest thing is, there was this voice telling me that 'only the six' can stop… something!"

"Stop what, though?" asked Homanu.

"Hell if I know!" Mira cried, throwing her hands.

"You probably just had a nightmare," Homanu said, placing a hand on Mira's shoulder. "I'm sure you'll forget about it in no time."

"I wish I could…" Mira murmured, crossing her arms.

No sooner had she said that when a fanfare suddenly started playing from the stadium's loudspeakers. "Guys! It's about to start!" Kero squealed, shaking his fists in excitement. He rushed back to the anticipating crowd, Mira and Homanu calmly following behind.

Sure enough, around halfway into the fanfare, some sparklers shot up from the floor, surrounding the entire entrance in a thick smoke. As the smoke started to clear, standing before the entrance was Giichi himself, his right hand on his hip and a proud smile across his face. His presence only increased the overall excitement of most of the attendees.

"My fellow duelists, both young and old," Giichi proudly announced, "you've been waiting this long since we've revealed teasers about our new format, and we have felt your excitement, your anticipation, and your hopes that it would be released sooner than originally intended. But now, the wait is finally over – I, Takahiro Giichi of Giichi Corp, officiate the release of our new, revolutionary duel format!

"Fellow duelists of Alba Litora, I present to you… GAME DUEL!" With those words boldly spoken, several large screens popped open before various locations of the audience, each displaying stylized red kanji with the words 'GAME DUEL' written in gold beneath. This sequence increased the audience's overall excitement.

"Typical Giichi, always gotta rely on flashy effects to get people to notice him…" Homanu remarked, crossing his arms.

"Just to show you how we have truly revolutionized the entire card game with Game Duel," Giichi continued, "behold!"

The screens changed to display three famous and easily recognizable cards: Beaver Warrior, Magical Stone Excavation, and Call of the Earthbound. But the overall layout for each of those cards was significantly different from that of regular Duel Monsters. For starters, the boxes for both the artwork and the card text were increased in width, to the point where they nearly touched the edges of the card. There was a slant just above the text box, on the far left, which was where the cards' Type lines were located. A similar slant was located on the upper right corner of the art box, which displayed the cards' Attributes. For the Monster Cards, the Levels were located in the upper left corner inside the art box, inside a near transparent frame. The 'ATK' and 'DEF' values were located at the bottom center of the text box, and were written in a cybernetic font in the same kind of transparent frame for the Levels, only less transparent by comparison. The words 'ATK' and 'DEF' were respectively written in red and blue, and their respective values were written in white.

But the most unusual feature for the displayed cards was that the concept of Attributes wasn't just applied for the Monster Cards, but for the Spell and Trap Cards, as well! Even more startling was that some of the Attributes were ones no one had heard of before. Beaver Warrior maintained its 'EARTH' Attribute, but Magical Stone Excavation's Attribute was 'WHITE MAGIC', and Call of the Earthbound's was 'DEMON MAGIC'. Upon this realization, all kinds of comments and gasps of awe arose from the audience.

Once he was sure that the audience was accustomed to the layout of the cards exclusive to his format, he resumed, "Some of you may have noticed some of the new Attributes for Game Duel. But you'll see that it's only a small sample, as we now present to you all of Game Duel's Attributes!"

Almost immediately, the screens changed to display all of the Attributes for this format – eleven, to be exact, in two separate columns. Next to each Attribute was its respective classification, which was as followed:

●BLACK MAGIC
●WHITE MAGIC
●DEMON MAGIC
●ILLUSION MAGIC
●EARTH
●FIRE
●FOREST
●ICE
●THUNDER
●WATER
●WIND

The EARTH, FIRE, WATER, and WIND Attributes were immediately recognizable, but all the others were completely new. The color for BLACK MAGIC was pitch-black; WHITE MAGIC was a white gold; DEMON MAGIC was a sinister violet; ILLUSION MAGIC was a pale lavender; FOREST was dark green; ICE was a pale light blue; and THUNDER was bright yellow.

The audience was certainly amazed and intrigued by the format's exclusive Attributes. Homanu, on the other hand, was significantly less than thrilled. "What kind of Attributes are those?!" he complained. "I mean, I'm glad they're keeping some of the regular Attributes, but what's with all the other ones?!"

"I dunno," Mira said with a gentle smile, "some of them do look kinda cool…"

"Are you for real?!" the astonished Homanu cried in disbelief. "I mean, I respect your opinion and all, but I still don't see who in the right mind would actually be taken in by Attributes like those!"

He suddenly noticed that an unbelievably happy Kero was completely drawn in by the Attributes, his fists clenched with excitement, his eyes fully dilated, and his smile practically stretching beyond the boundaries of his face. "Kero doesn't count…" Homanu grumbled.

"There's more to Game Duel than just new Attributes and new card designs," Giichi resumed. "The rules and the overall gameplay are significantly different, as well! But rather than boring you all with a tiresome lecture, how about you truly get a feel for them with an actual Game Duel!?" Once again, most of the audience got excited, feeling as if they actually had a once-in-a-lifetime chance to win a tremendous prize.

"Who shall be my two lucky demonstrators?" Upon hearing this, most of the audience raised their hands as high as they could, and shouted as loudly as they could. Kero repeatedly jumped up and down, in high hopes he would be picked.

"The first one shall be… you, with the spiky yellow hair!" He shone a green laser pointer on the shirt of a boy no older than nine. He had purple eyes and gelled yellow hair, and his attire simply consisted of a white T-shirt with a light blue vortex pattern resembling the artwork of 'Polymerization', beige cargo shorts, and dark blue sneakers. The boy was astonished that he was chosen, and he immediately ran up to greet Giichi.

"That's one lucky duelist down, and one to go!" Giichi announced, almost dramatically. "But who shall be the lucky opponent?" Again, the audience wave their arms at their wildest and cheered at their loudest, hoping any one of them would be picked.

"PLEASE! PLEASE! PICK ME, PLEASE!" Kero pleaded, jumping up and down at his hardest, waving his hands at his wildest, and screaming at his loudest.

"I hope he doesn't have a breakdown if he doesn't get picked…" Homanu sighed.

"I wouldn't bet on it," said Mira. "I mean, this is Kero we're talking about…"

"Alright, the opponent shall be… you, with the long reddish hair!" Giichi announced, shining his laser pointer on Kero's shirt.

Seeing this made Kero overjoyed to his fullest. "He… he chose me?!" he heavily gasped in excitement. "OH MY GOD, HE CHOSE ME! I'M GONNA BE DUELING IN THE EXHIBITION MATCH!" He raced up to the stadium to stand next to Giichi, his smile still stretching across his face. But as soon as he got up on stage, his opponent discreetly studied Kero quizzically, as if he wanted to be sure about something in regards to his overall character.

"Alright, now that our two lucky participants have been chosen," Giichi announced, "the first Game Duel can finally commence! But before going any further, I'll need the names of our contestants." Turning his attention to Kero, he asked, "What's your name, young man?"

"Kero! Kero Nobuyuki!" Kero beamed, hitting his chest with pride.

"Kero Nobuyuki – a fine name, indeed!" said Giichi. To Kero's opponent, Giichi added, "And what might your name be, little boy?"

"Eiko," the boy shyly replied.

"…Eiko who?" asked Giichi.

"Just Eiko," the boy said.

"Alright, Kero and… just Eiko," Giichi said, almost awkwardly, "you have been chosen to partake in the very first Game Duel, ever! However, you'll be using a very special kind of Duel Disk made specifically for this format – the 'D-Gear!'"

Two interns suddenly walked out of the stadium's entrance to greet Giichi, Kero, and Eiko. Each of the interns carried the 'D-Gears' Giichi had just introduced. But instead of them being round discs with physical blades, the D-Gears were wristbands with black bands, a dial in the shape of a dark gray cogwheel with eight teeth, and a touchscreen in the center of the cogwheel. The screens displayed before the audience changed to showcase these new Duel Disks.

Kero's eyes glistened at the sight of this new device. "Oh my God… it's beautiful!" he squealed, immediately snatching a model from one of the interns. "And I can't believe I actually get to wear one of these babies! Ooh, this day just keeps getting better and better!"

He begun to twirl around, still holding the D-Gear. But in all the excitement, he accidentally flung it against a wall of the stadium, creating the unmistakable sound of glass shattering. The intern he took the model from rushed over to the D-Gear, only to discover that the touchscreen was irreparably damaged, much to Giichi's chagrin when he was informed of the damages. Kero, flustered after realizing what he had done, only smiled sheepishly at Giichi.

Though Giichi maintained his composure in front of the audience, he still ordered the intern: "Send this kid to the detention area, so that he doesn't break anything else."

Upon hearing this, Kero was considerably heartbroken, knowing that his chances of participating in the first-ever Game Duel were diminished. "No! Please!" he pleaded as the intern dragged him away. "I'll behave! I'll pay for the damages! Just please let me duel!" He continued whining and struggling as the intern dragged him into the stadium.

"Damn it, Kero…" Homanu grumbled, slapping his forehead. Mira, who was just as embarrassed, fumed through her nostrils as she placed her fingertips on her forehead.

"Okay, due to that little incident beyond our control," Giichi resumed, taking out his laser pointer, "we're now one participant short, so Eiko's new opponent shall be… you!" The duelist Giichi shone his laser pointer on… was Mira!

Mira was astonished that she, of all people, was chosen. Regardless, she still made her way to Giichi. Not long after, the same intern who detained Kero emerged out of the stadium with a new D-Gear, which was the same as the one Kero had previously broken. But all this time, Eiko had studied Mira discreetly. But this time, he appeared to be more taken in by Mira than he was when studying Kero.

"Assuming that there won't be any further incidents," Giichi announced, "duelists, activate your D-Gears!"

Mira and Eiko took the D-Gears and fastened them onto their wrists. Not long after, each of the touchscreens immediately lit up to display a pattern of rotating white rounded curved lines in front of a background of multicolored digital pixels. Afterwards, a rounded rectangular blade of partially transparent green digital light formed parallel to each of the D-Gears' cogwheels. On each blade were three zones outlined in white, all of which were levitating. A thin horizontal slot, also outlined in white, was located parallel to each of the three floating zones.

"One thing you may have already noticed is that with Game Duels," Giichi explained, "there are three zones for both Monsters and Spells and Traps, instead of the traditional five! This format not only pays homage to the classic 'Speed Duel' format, but also to the battles of Ancient Egypt, where its participants were only able to control three monsters at a time!" Nobody noticed that Eiko faintly smiled as he heard the reason for there being such a limited number of zones.

"There are two other important rules to Game Duels: first, instead of Normal Summoning only one monster per turn, you're both allowed to Normal Summon as many monsters as you want during one turn! Second, during each of your Draw Phases, you get to draw cards until you have five in your hand! However, should you already have five or more, you cannot draw any more cards.

"But there's one other feature to Game Duels, which will be the environment you'll be dueling in!"

With a snap of Giichi's fingers, both duelists noticed a card moving up to the center of their D-Gears' touchscreens. The card's artwork depicted Alba Litora being constructed by digital wires of different shades of blue. But the card itself was colored cyan with a honeycomb pattern, similar to that of Link Monsters. The traditional icon for Field Spell Cards was located in the slant above the text box, but the kanji beside it translated to 'Game Duel Field'. "Now activating Game Duel Field, Game World," a computerized female voice spoke during this sequence.

"When a Game Duel begins," Giichi resumed, "a special card known as a 'Game World Field Card' will automatically activate! Game World Fields not only determine any special rules for the current Game Duel, but they will also determine the overall Terrain, based on the current environment the Game Duel will take place in! The 'Terrain' in question will determine which monsters of certain Types or Attributes will be strong or weak in the Terrain! But since this is merely an exhibition match, this duel will be played under the 'Normal' Terrain that has no advantage or disadvantage for any monster Type whatsoever, nor will there be any special rules outside of the standard rules for Game Duels. Furthermore, you'll still be able to activate regular Field Spell Cards, but Game World Fields cannot be negated or removed by any means!

"But now that we have gotten all that out of the way: duelists, draw your cards, and let the first-ever Game Duel commence!" The audience cheered wildly at this declaration.

"Looks like this is it, Eiko," Mira said, gently but confidently. "You ready for this?"

"As ready as ever!" Eiko beamed.

"Game Duel, game start!" Giichi bellowed, pointing towards the sky.

MIRA: 4000 LP / EIKO: 4000 LP

"It's my turn!" Mira shouted. A transparent digital ring with a white outline formed around her wrist. Three horizontal trapezoid-shaped ridges with a thin slot for each were located around the ring in a triangular fashion. Each of the three slots had a different color – more specifically, red, green, and blue – clockwise from the topmost ridge. Not long after the ring's formation, five digital Duel Monsters cards stacked on top of each other materialized in front of the red-slotted ridge. "I draw!" She drew the five cards, and then proceeded to look at the contents of her hand: three Monster Cards, a Spell Card, and a Trap Card.

'Hmm… These Monster Cards aren't very strong,' Mira thought, analyzing her Monster Cards. Indeed, they didn't have high Attack or Defense values – strange for a format that Giichi so advertised as being 'revolutionary.' Compared to regular Duel Monsters, these cards surely didn't have a strong awe factor. 'But if I really am able to Normal Summon multiple monsters in one turn like Giichi said, then I'd better make use of it!'

"From my hand, I summon Necrolancer the Time-lord, Moon Envoy, and Blackland Fire Dragon!"

She took the three Monster Cards in her hand, and within a single swipe, she slapped them across her blade's three floating card zones. Three green hexagonal portals formed beside her, and the three monsters emerged out of them before each portal closed up.

The first monster, Necrolancer, was a lanky, one-eyed green demon that had a golden ring around him. [ATK: 800] The second, Moon Envoy, was a warrior clad in blue armor mixed with white gold, and wielded a pike whose razors resembled a crescent moon. [ATK: 1100] The third and last, Blackland Fire Dragon, was simply a green-skinned winged dragon. [ATK: 1500]

"I'll place two cards face-down, and end my turn!" she took the two remaining cards in her hand and slid them into her blade's leftmost and rightmost slots. Two vertical cards materialized – one behind the one-eyed demon, and the other behind the dragon – before disappearing from sight.

"Ladies and gentlemen, you're seeing this with your own eyes!" Giichi excitedly announced. "Mira has just demonstrated the true potential of Game Duels! She has just used up her entire hand by Normal Summoning three monsters, and placing two cards face-down – that means on her next turn, she'll be eligible to draw until she has five cards in her hand!"

"Alright! Show 'em what you're made of, Onee-chan!" Kero cheered from inside the stadium's detention center. Another intern was there to keep watch of him.

"Okay, Eiko, you're up!" Mira said.

"Alright, it's my turn!" Eiko declared. His D-Gear's ring appeared around his wrist, five stacked digital cards materializing in front of the red-slotted ridge. "I draw!" he shouted, drawing the five cards. 'Alright, time to show her what I can really do!' he thought as he examined the contents of his opening hand.

He took two cards from his hand and slapped them onto his blade's leftmost and rightmost floating zones. Two more green hexagonal portals formed beside him, and the two monsters emerged out of the portals. Armaill was a male serpent-like humanoid with a razor-sharp blade at the end of his tail. He was clad in pale blue armor, and wielded two swords. [ATK: 700] The other was a green-scaled dragon similar to Blackfire Dragon; but as the name suggested, this dragon had only one eye, as well as silver armor on its chest and face. [ATK: 700]

"I'm glad you're starting to pick up on the rules, too," Mira told her opponent, albeit uneasily, "but your monsters are kinda weak – weaker than Necrolancer, even!"

"I'm aware of that," Eiko said, rather confidently. "But if Game Duels let you Normal Summon multiple monsters in one turn, then that means I can summon high-Leveled monsters with ease!"

"What are you…" Mira began. But then her eyes widened as the realization occurred to her. "You mean…?!"

"You bet!" Eiko beamed as he raised another card high into the sky, which was then inexplicably shrouded by a sinister violet digital aura. "I sacrifice both of my monsters to call upon this mighty beast!"

Both of Eiko's monsters dissipated in green pixels. But instead of a hexagonal portal, a pillar of sinister violet light shot up behind Eiko. Flying out of the light was another dragon, this one pitch-black and more bipedal, with violet dots and dotted lines all over its body, including the sides of its neck, its arms, and its tail. Additionally, the skin of its wings was comprised entirely of violet light.

"I Tribute Summon… GANDORBIS, THE DRAGON OF DISTORTION!" Eiko bellowed as the dragon unleashed a frightening screech. [ATK: 0] Everyone – especially Mira, Homanu, and Kero – were startled by a newcomer such as Eiko wielding a card such as the one he just played.

But no one was more startled about Gandorbis than Giichi himself. 'I don't remember implementing that card into my format's database!' he suspiciously thought.

"I activate Gandorbis's effect!" Eiko resumed. "Since my Life Points are at least four thousand, I pay two thousand Life Points!" He was shrouded by a sinister violet digital aura. [LP: 4000 2000] Afterwards, the orbs on the dragon's body began to shine rather ominously. "By doing so, all the cards on your field are destroyed!"

"No way!" Mira cried. Before she could say or do anything else, a laser shot out of each of the dragon's orbs, vaporizing all of Mira's cards. This included her two face-down cards, which were Call of the Earthbound, and an unknown Spell Card.

"That's not all!" Eiko beamed. "For every card Gandorbis just destroyed, he gains six hundred extra Attack Points! And since five cards were destroyed, Gandorbis's Attack and Defense Points both become three thousand!" The dragon unleashed another frightening roar. [ATK: 0 3000]

The move Eiko just made increased the astonishment of the audience, especially Homanu's. "So Eiko has brought out a monster that not only wipes out all the cards on Mira's field, but can also gain that much Attack Points?!" he cried. After thinking about what he just said, he narrowed his eyes on Eiko on the virtual screen closest to him. "Something's not right about this guy…"

"If you thought that was impressive for a newcomer like myself, just wait!" Eiko resumed, grabbing another card from his hand. "First, I'll place this card face-down!" He slid the card into his blade's center slot. Another virtual card materialized before disappearing from view.

"Then I activate the Field Spell, Orbis Seal, Star Denial!"

His D-Gear's Field Card Zone opened, which was revealed to be a virtual slot that slid out of the outer end of the blade. He placed the card onto the slot's zone before the slot closed back up. Not long after, a circular pattern outlined in violet light formed underneath Eiko, before it enlarged to be underneath both duelists. It was comprised of two circles, with a series of what appeared to be runes of an otherworldly language, written inside the outer ridge.

"Since I control my Gandorbis, who is a monster of the BLACK MAGIC Attribute, I have to select him for this card's requirement. And as long as this Field Spell's in play, none of our monsters whose Levels are lower than my Level Eight Gandorbis can attack or activate their effects!"

'Damn!' the frustrated Mira thought, gritting her teeth. 'That means all the Level Seven or lower monsters in my deck are practically useless!'

"First Gandorbis, now this?" Homanu pondered, his suspicions towards Eiko significantly increased. "Either Giichi somehow arranged for this to happen, or Eiko's almost too good for a first-timer at Game Duels…"

"Time to cut you down to size!" Eiko declared. "Gandorbis, attack Mira directly!" Violet digital light began to form in the dragon's mouth.

"Gigarays of Distortion!"

The dragon unleashed the light as a digital flame that struck at Mira, who screamed as she was flung backwards by the force of the attack. [LP: 4000 1000]

"Mira!" Kero wailed as he witnessed his friend's predicament. "Please don't give up, Onee-chan!" he loudly pleaded, falling to his knees. "Show this guy what you're truly capable of as a duelist! I believe in you!"

"I end my turn," Eiko finished, feeling rather proud of himself. "Let's see what you've got, Mira!"

Mira groaned as she slowly got herself up. 'I didn't think Eiko would be this good for a newcomer…!' she frustratingly thought. It wasn't long before her self-determination returned. 'But if he thinks I'm gonna just give up that easily, he's got another thing coming!'

"It's my turn!" Mira declared as her D-Gear's ring formed around her wrist. "But if I'm really allowed to draw until I have five cards in my hand, I'll do just that!"

With that declaration made, five stacked digital cards materialized in front of the red-slotted ridge. Not long after, Mira drew them with all her might. But when she looked at them, her eyes widened in surprise. Two of the cards she just drew were ones she had never seen before.

'What are these cards?' she wondered, closely examining them. 'They're obviously something made exclusively for this format, but what do they even do? Looks like there's only one way to find out…' She took a closer look at one of them, which was a Monster Card. 'At least it tells me how I can summon it!'

"Since this card was drawn this turn and I control no monsters," she said aloud, "I'm allowed to summon this!" She took the card she put her focus on, and raised it into the air.

"I summon the Upgrade Monster, Destiny Dragon Chronogias!"

She slapped the card onto her blade's center floating zone. But instead of a hexagonal portal, a lustrous lavender pillar shot up from behind Mira. Flying out of the pillar was an ebony cybernetic dragon with lavender eyes and accents. The joints of its partially attached arms were separated by glowing lavender spheres, and its partially attached wings were built in the same manner. On its chest were two unlit hexagons inside each other.

Giichi was beyond overjoyed over this move, as if it was the kind of move he was expecting, or rather hoping, someone would make in this exhibition match. With the energy of a happy little boy, he excitedly announced, "Ladies and gentlemen, what you have just witnessed is the Monster Card type made exclusively for this format: the Upgrade Monster!"

The screens immediately changed to display this so-called 'Upgrade Monster'. The color of its frame was orange like regular Effect Monsters, but also included a circuit board pattern in the background. Other noticeable features were that it had no Level, and in place of the regular ATK and DEF values, the word 'ATK' was written in white, but was followed by 'BASE' and 'SUP'. Similarly, underneath was the word 'CORE', also written in white, with 'SUP 2' written next to it. All traces of text relating to 'BASE' was written in light gray, while the text relating to 'SUP' was written in light blue.

"Upgrade Monsters are unique in the sense that unlike regular Monster Cards, they possess no Level whatsoever, making them immune to cards and effects that would otherwise affect monsters that do have Levels! But worry not, for all Upgrade Monsters will state how or if they can be properly summoned.

"However, the true highlight of their functions revolves around their indicator known as the 'Grade'!" On the virtual screens, 'BASE' and 'SUP' were highlighted before the audience. "An Upgrade Monster's Grade takes place of its Defense Point value – so in addition to being unaffected by cards and effects that revolve around Levels, Upgrade Monsters are also unaffected by cards and effects that would either change them to Defense Mode, or flip them face-down. But the true purpose of the Grade is that it determines the Upgrade Monster's overall strength, both in terms of Attack value and effects!

"That's because when an Upgrade Monster is first brought out, it will acquire its lowest possible Grade – which, in the case of Chronogias, is the BASE Grade. As a result, it will have 1900 Attack Points when it's first brought out to the field!" This time, the screens just highlighted Chronogias's 'BASE', both the word and its ATK value. [GRADE: BASE / BASE ATK: 1900]

"But how does one increase an Upgrade Monster's Grade to its fullest potential, you ask? The answer is through what's known as a 'Core Card'!" On each screen, a mockup of a light gray card appeared next to Chronogias's card form, part of its kanji translating to 'CORE CARD'. In place of the Attribute was a light gray hexagon with a white cybernetic 'B' in the center.

"To 'inject' simply means to place underneath an Upgrade Monster, very similar to an Xyz Material exclusive to Xyz Monsters," Giichi further explained. Indeed, the screen illustrated the mockup card moving underneath Chronogias; and once it did, Chronogias's 'SUP' text was highlighted instead of the 'BASE' text. "Once an Upgrade Monster is injected, the Upgrade Monster's Grade will be raised to whatever Grade is specified in the Core Card's text, and thus will have the possibility of strengthening the Upgrade Monster to its fullest potential! But such powerful effects it may obtain come at a cost – and that's where the 'Core' comes in!" The 'SUP 2' next to Chronogias's 'CORE' text was highlighted before the audience.

"Once an Upgrade Monster is injected with a Core Card, it will automatically acquire the number of Cores written in its own text – in this case, should Chronogias be raised to the 'SUP' Grade, it will immediately acquire two Cores! But once the Core reaches zero, the Core Card will be ejected, and the Upgrade Monster it was injected into will revert to its lowest Grade." On the screens, the 'CORE' depleted to zero; and when it did, the mockup underneath Chronogias pixelated, making Chronogias's 'BASE' text highlighted once again.

"Some other important things to know are that Upgrade Monsters can only be injected with one Core Card at a time, and once it's injected, the Core Card cannot be ejected unless the Upgrade Monster's own Core reaches zero. Furthermore, each player can only have one Upgrade Monster on their own side of the field at a time, considering how powerful plenty of them can be. Additionally, if an Upgrade Monster in the hand or Graveyard is chosen for an effect that involves Attack Point strength, the Attack Points associated with its lowest possible Grade will be applied. But we'll see how well Mira demonstrates an Upgrade Monster's true capabilities!"

'Jesus, I thought this guy would never stop talking!' the irritated Mira thought, anxious to get back to the duel. Still, she looked at the other card in her hand before Giichi's lengthy lecture. It was, in fact, a 'Core Card' that was capable of injecting into another Upgrade Monster, as Giichi stated. After reading the card over, she thought: 'Okay… here goes!'

"I inject Chronogias with Upgrade Core Super!" she declared, revealing a card. It was the exact same gray-colored card as the mockup used to demonstrate the capabilities of Upgrade Monsters in general. As for the artwork, it depicted a more detailed version of the light gray hexagonal graphic, except it was shrouded by a lustrous blue light.

"And once it's injected, its Grade will become 'Super', and its original Attack Points will become twenty-five hundred!" After placing the card directly underneath Chronogias's card form, the hexagons on the dragon's chest began to shine a lustrous blue. [GRADE: BASE SUP / BASE ATK: 1900 SUP ATK: 2400 / CORE: 0 2]

"I activate Chronogias's Super Effect! I select a monster on your side of the field; and by using one Core, that monster will lose fifteen hundred Attack Points!" After the outer hexagon became unlit [CORE: 2 1], the dragon unleashed a wave of lavender energy from its claw, striking directly at Gandorbis. [ATK: 3000 1500]

"Now Chronogias is stronger than Gandorbis!" Kero squealed, his pupils dilating in excitement. "That means when Mira attacks, she wins!" Within a single leap, he loudly cheered, "GO GET 'EM, ONEE-CHAN!"

"You may have weakened Gandorbis," Eiko said, back at the duel, "but the Attack Points it lost won't go to waste!" With that declaration, he waved his right arm, and a card materialized beside him. It was a WHITE MAGIC Trap Card whose artwork depicted a faint mirage of the angel from 'Graceful Charity' behind a distraught duelist on his knees. There was a sunbeam shining on the duelist. "I activate the Trap Card, Conversion from Loss!

"Since one of my monsters just lost Attack Points, I regain Life Points equal to the amount lost!" Eiko proudly clenched his right fist as the same sunbeam pictured on the card appeared above him. [LP: 2000 3500] "Looks like your attempt to beat me this turn was cut short!"

"I wouldn't bet on it," Mira said, to Eiko's confusion. "I'll admit, I'm still new to Upgrade Monsters as a whole, but I did look over Chronogias's effects before I summoned it, and I can definitely say with confidence that I have what it takes to beat you!"

"H-how so?" Eiko asked, shivering a little.

"Giichi did say that an Upgrade Monster's Grade can determine its strength in terms of effects, as well as its original Attack Points," Mira explained. "So if that's the case, then I can activate Chronogias's Base Effect! And to do so, I have to send a Spell Card from my hand to the Graveyard!" A card materialized in front of her, which she swiped her fingertips across, causing the card to pixelate.

"By doing so, I get to select a Normal Spell Card in my Graveyard, and add it to my hand! And I know just the one!" Her Disk's ring appeared around her wrist once again and a streak of green light shot from the green-slotted ridge into her hand, transforming into a card.

"From my hand, I activate the Spell Card that you sent to the Graveyard the previous turn: Past Power Boost!" She vigorously swiped the card through one of her blade's horizontal slots. Afterwards, another Spell Card materialized; this one was an ILLUSION MAGIC card whose artwork depicted the phantasmal versions of Magical Beast Wolfang and Spell Archer behind Sevens Road Magician, all in the background of a time vortex.

"With this card, I have to shuffle up to two Normal Monsters with fifteen hundred or less Attack Points from my Graveyard into my deck, other than monsters that were sent to the Graveyard this turn. When I do, one of my monsters will gain Attack Points equal to the combined Attack Points of the monsters I sent back to my deck!"

"No way!" Eiko cried, now knowing that the worst was yet to come for him.

"I return Blackland Fire Dragon and Moon Envoy from my Graveyard to my deck, so that Chronogias will gain twenty-six hundred Attack Points – just enough to defeat you!" Sure enough, the phantasmal versions of Blackland Fire Dragon and Moon Envoy appeared, only to be absorbed into Chronogias, who roared as it was shrouded by lustrous lavender energy. [SUP ATK: 2400 5000]

Despite knowing that he was going to lose once Mira activated the Spell Card, Eiko was left rather impressed. "This was a great duel, Mira," he gently complimented. "I'm glad to have dueled someone like you."

"Wait… you are?" the perplexed Mira asked.

"Without a doubt," Eiko replied. "Now attack me, and end this!"

Mira was still perplexed, but if her opponent really insisted, then she could only nod. She then commanded: "Destiny Dragon Chronogias, attack Gandorbis and end this duel!" Some lavender digital fire formed in Chronogias's mouth, which Chronogias unleased at Gandorbis, vaporizing it. The digital fire also struck at Eiko, who only smiled and closed his eyes as he accepted his defeat. [LP: 3500 0]

Seeing this outcome, Giichi excitedly announced, "Ladies and gentlemen, the winner of the very first Game Rush Duel is… Mira Yukiko!" Indeed, a virtual screen displaying Mira's profile with 'WIN' written underneath in a gold cybernetic font popped open.

"YOU DID IT, ONEE-CHAN!" Kero cheered at his loudest and wildest, raising his fists towards the sky. "I KNEW YOU COULD BEAT THAT GUY! I JUST KNEW IT!"

The rest of the audience was just as wildly excited as Kero was. That is, except for Homanu. There was no doubt he was happy for Mira's victory, but he didn't seem to be as impressed as the other attendees.

"You dueled very well, both of you," Giichi said, placing a hand on both Mira and Eiko's shoulders. "As a special reward for being chosen to participate, you can either keep the D-Gears that were given to you, or trade them in for customizable ones!

"As for the rest of you attending, you'll each get a preconstructed starter deck of your choice and a custom D-Gear model of your choice! Now, shall we go inside, everyone?" He turned and was about to head inside the stadium, but was stopped by Eiko tugging on his dress shirt.

"Um… Mr. Giichi, sir?" Eiko timidly asked. "Can I… actually be excused for a moment?"

"What for?" Giichi asked. But it wasn't long before his expression shifted from curiosity to playfulness. "Oh, I see, you just need a moment 'cause you can't handle all the excitement, can you?"

"You might say that…" Eiko said, almost slyly.

"Alright, but do hurry back inside the stadium so that you can claim your reward," Giichi ordered. Eiko nodded, and ran off not too far from the stadium.

"What's with him…?" Mira asked herself as she and the rest of the attendees headed inside the stadium.

Eiko, meanwhile, went to a group of trees, and hid behind one of them. Once he was sure he was alone, he took something out of his pocket. It was a necklace consisting of a black tag with a silver ring in the center, hung by a white string. Inside the ring was an amethyst crystal with a carving of a crude human eye with five rays resembling eyelashes. 'Well, finally!' a high-pitched female voice spoke from the crystal, and heard only by Eiko. 'I thought I was gonna suffocate in here!'

"Now is not the time for jokes!" Eiko harshly whispered. "Have you found any of who we're looking for?"

'Well, you know that girl you were dueling earlier? I think she's one of them!' the voice chirped.

"You really think so?"

'I wouldn't be glowing like this if I wasn't sure, would I?'

"You could be right, but we mustn't jump to conclusions just yet. If she really is one of who we're looking for, we'll have to find a way to prove it."

'But how?'

"I don't know how, and I also don't know when. But we will, you can be sure of that. Right now, we have to keep searching!"

'Aww, I don't wanna go back in the pocket!' the voice complained. But Eiko ignored her as he placed the necklace back in his pocket before regrouping with those who attended the format's unveiling.
