Chapter 9; Bittersweet Fusion

The next day as the sun started to rise, two giant bird monsters that had a lion's head and its colors were light red, with gold lines around its joints, flew through the sky and took cover in a tree and were keeping an eye on Jim and Noah, who were both fast asleep. They didn't wake up until Barbara opened their doors and said. "Wake up, sleepyheads. You two don't want to sleep through your big day?"

"And what big day is that?" Noah said as he and Jim got up. Barbara then said to them. "That big day that starts with a B?" That caused them both to know what Barbara was talking about. Noah got back into bed and Jim said. "Oh, my birthday."

"Not just your Jim." Barbara said, pointing to Noah. Jim got the idea and said. "Noah, is it your and Seth's birthday too?" Noah didn't say anything, just groaned. Seth then appeared wearing a cooking apron. He looked at Noah, who covered himself with his blanket, and before he could say anything, Jim said to him. "Seth, is today your birthday?"

"Yes it is."

"Then why is Noah hiding under his bed?"

"He really doesn't like birthdays."

"So he's like Jim." Barbara said, causing Seth to gasp. Seth then said to him. "Then I'll need to change your mind too. After all it's your 16th birthday and my and Noah's 17th birthday." Then a timer rang. "The pies are done." Seth said as he and Barbara went down stairs. Jim got out of bed and went over to Noah, but before Jim could say anything, Jim's Bat Phone rang and Jim picked it up. "Warhammer to Trollhunter. Copy?" Toby said and Jim said to him. "Copy. What is it, Tobes?"

"Look out your window!" Toby said as Jim looked out the window and saw Toby holding two cake drawings with one for Jim and the other was for Noah and Seth, but each one had a bite taken out of the names. Jim then said to Toby. "I think a bird or something tore away a piece of your drawing, Tobes."

"Ah, that was Aaarrrgghh. He thought the cake was real. Or maybe he just likes the taste of paper. Any word from Claire."

"No, she might be mad at me for getting her in trouble."

"Well she did leave a total stranger to keep an eye on her baby brother, who wasn't really her baby brother, and went to a concert with a boy. But look at the positive."

"And that would be?"

"You have made a good impression with Claire's parents and Claire is not allowed to see Steve ever again."

"But her brother is trapped in the Darklands. Oh, how am I going to tell her that? Do you think there is a Hallmark card for that?"

"If there isn't, there should be. In the meantime, ignorance is bliss, and I've got a birthday gift for you, Noah and Seth that Aaarrrgghh cannot eat."

"You knew about Noah and Seth's birthday?"

"Yeah, Seth told me." Toby said before his Nana said. "Toby-Pie! Why is this box empty?"

"Ugh, Aaarrrgghh ate the kitty litter. Gotta go. Warhammer out." Toby said before hanging up the phone. Seth then came back up and took them both down stairs. On the table was a regular pie, Jim got closer to the pie, but not Noah. Jim turned to Noah and said. "Your brother made this, are you sure you don't want to eat it?"

"No, and you won't in 5… 4… 3… 2… 1… 0." Noah said as an air bubble started to come out of the pie. Jim saw the bubble, but then it exploded and covered Jim with pit guts. "Not again." Seth said as Jim went to the bathroom to clean up. Noah followed him and said to Jim as he was almost cleaned. "You see Jim, unlike us, Seth loves birthdays and will try to make it the best birthday ever."

"Is this going to get worse?"

"Much worse." Noah said, giving Jim a towel. Jim took it and finished cleaning up. They both went down stairs and Barbara said to Jim. "Oh! Wait! Jim, wait right there. Let me get your present ready in the garage."

"The garage?"

"I know you've wanted this for a while, and now that you're the big one-six, maybe it's time. I think you'll get a lot of mileage out of it." Barbara said before Jim heard the sound of a motor. Jim went into the garage and thought his mom had bought him the scooter he wanted, but what she really had was a fancy new blender called The Food Magic 3000. Barbara saw Jim's smile drop and she said. "You hate it don't you?"

"No, no, Mom, it's– it's– it's great!" Jim said before Noah said. "He was expecting a scooter."

"Oh, and what I said with the garage and the mileage…" Barbara said before Jim said as he took the blinder. "It's fine. I also wanted one of these."

"We'll get a Vespa someday, Jim. Just… You know I hate the idea of you on one of those things."

"The Food Magic is perfect, Mom, really. I can't wait to cook you, Noah and Seth something with it." Jim said before Seth came in and said to Jim and Noah. "Jim! Noah! We have to go to you know where."

"What place?" Barbara said while she was still in the room. Noah then said to Barbara. "Our hang out spot. We'll see you later."

"Ok. Oh, and tonight all of us are together… celebration!"

"Looking forward." Noah said as they all left for Trollmarket. As they were leaving, the birds were following Jim and Noah, but they didn't know. In Trollmarket; Hero's Forge was out of control and so was Aaarrrgghh. Blinky ran up to them, as other trolls were running and said to Jim and Noah. "It's too late, Master Jim, Master Noah. Aaarrrgghh has lost his mind!"

"How did that happen!?" Noah said as he and Jim were about to transform, but Aaarrrgghh roar caught them off guard and Aaarrrgghh grabbed them. But a few seconds later, Jim and Noah saw that this was actually a surprise party. And the whole area was covered with balloons. Blinky then said to them. "Happy birthing day, Master Jim, Master Noah, and Master Seth."

"This was a surprise party?!" Noah said as Aaarrrgghh put them on his back. Blinky then said to them. "Tobias informed us of your human surprised birthday customs. Are you not surprised?"

"That would be one word for it." Jim said, laughing a little. Aaarrrgghh then said to Jim and Noah. "I was convincing."

"Yes, you were Aaarrrgghh. But why are you happy Blinky?" Noah said as Aaarrrgghh put them down. "Sixteen years! A propitious milestone in Troll culture."

"Why is it a milestone?" Jim said as they walked up to Blinky and Blinky said. "Sixteen is when young trolls master command of their bowels." Before Jim, Noah, Seth and Toby could say anything. Vendel appeared and yelled. "The Hero's Forge! Sacred proving ground for Trollhunters past, present, and future, reduced to mockery. You will remove them post-haste."

"Come on Vendel, we are just celebrating life." Seth said before Vendel popped the balloon Seth was holding. Vendel then said to all of them as the other trolls left. "I don't want anything to delay the Trollhunter's training." Vendel then walked away. As Noah, Toby, and Aaarrrgghh cleaned up the party, Jim said to Blinky. "He didn't mention Claire's brother."

"In his defense, he's never met Enrique." Blinky said before Seth said to him. "I think Jim is talking about Teika, not Enrique."

"Oh! Vendel doesn't believe we have a changeling problem, Master Jim. He certainly won't simply take my word that Claire's brother has been replaced with one. But he's right about your training, and what better way to celebrate your birthing day than to work on forestalling your dying day." Blinky said before Jim and Noah started their training. The area had a tower and pillar blades coming out. And as Jim and Noah chased after Aaarrrgghh, Blinky said to them. "You will not always be the quarry, Master Jim, Master Noah. The hunted must become the hunter! Speed and precision is the goal of this drill. You two must catch Aaarrrgghh without reliance upon your powers. If you are without your weapon, the environment can be your weapon!" Then they almost got hit with a blade. "A weapon you two use, I mean." Blinky said before Jim and Noah started to run after Aaarrrgghh. Blinky then said to Toby and Seth. "Master Jim, and Master Noah, don't appear to be themselves. I expected the celebration of their birthing day to add some spring to their steps."

"Birthdays really aren't Jim's thing." Toby said before Seth said. "The same with Noah."

"For creatures with such a short lifespan, I would think they would be cherished." Blinky said before Seth said. "For Noah. After we lost our parents and while we were in an orphanage, every birthday Noah had to fight off the bullies that wanted to take everything we and other kids were given at the orphanage. And even after we left the orphanage, every birthday Noah felt like he couldn't let his guard down or else something bad would happen. What about Jim?"

"Brithday's always remind Jim of the day when his dad disappeared."

"Like "magic" disappeared or "deadbeat" disappeared?"

"Walked out cause he's a deadbeat" disappeared. I'd just moved into the house across the street, and Jim's dad got him this sweet bike kit for his fifth birthday. And then, he just took off. The pieces laid there in the garage for years. Last I heard, the guy ran off with his girlfriend to be a ski bum in Vermont."

"What horrible tragedies. Made even more horrible that I had no idea." Blinky said before Seth said. "Don't feel too bad, Blinky. Those are things that are hard for people to talk about." Then they saw Jim and Noah use a pillar blade to reach Aaarrrgghh. "There you go, Master Jim! Master Noah! That's how you two…" Blinky said before they jumped off the blade, but missed Aaarrrgghh and also fell to the ground. But Aaarrrgghh caught them and then they would start the exercise again. Seth then said to Blinky. "Now I better go get Teika before I can start working on Noah's gift."

"Be fast as the wind, Master Seth." Blinky said as Seth left them. Outside of Trollmarket, Strickler was meeting up with Bular at a broken storm drain that was located in the forest. When he noticed a shard of two Soul Jewel, a gold shard and light red shard. He picked them up and said to Bular. "These are two Phantom pieces, aren't they? You've made a Fusion Phantom!"

"To do what we should have done long ago."

"You know very well that Fusion Phantoms are even harder for us to control than normal Phantoms."

"I'm aware of the danger a Fusion Phantom could cause. But I am sick of hiding in the shadows while these fleshbags stumble closer and closer to my father's bridge."

"Are you mad?! We agreed that any attempt on those boy's lives would bring too much scrutiny."

"Which is why I told them to attack them when they are alone, take them far away, and then kill them. So when they get their prey alone, no one will ever see or hear from the Trollhunter or the Kamen Rider again. Less they find their rotting bones." Bular said before laughing as they saw one of the monsters that had been following Jim and Noah appeared overhead. Strickler looked at the Fusion Phantoms and thought it was a bad idea, but the situation was completely out of his control. After training was done for Jim, Toby took Jim to the scooter place, and a Fusion Phantom was watching them. And Noah was doing some more training before he had to go school. Once at the scooter place, Toby took out a folder and said to Jim. "All right, chief. Are you ready for your birthday gift?"

"Are we gonna sue someone?"

"Nah, that's next year's gift. Hey, give me your wallet."

"Maybe you don't know how this whole gift thing's supposed to work."

"I've got it wired. Give me your wallet." Toby said and Jim gave Toby his wallet. Toby then pulled out his learner permit and said. "Cool. We're ready."

"Not this again." Jim said as they went to the scooter dealer. When Toby made small talk to the dealer, the dealer knew what Toby was after and said. "Look, I told your friend he can't do a test drive unless you have a learner's permit."

"Hot of the press." Toby said, showing the dealer Jim's learner's permit. The dealer then said to them. "Yeah, I also need a insur–"

"An insurance card? Luckily, he's still on his mother's plan." Toby said, pulling out Jim's insurance card from the folder he had. Toby then pulled out Jim's Social Security card, signed testimonials from his teachers and friend, and his library card for fun. The dealer looked at the paperwork and said. "Happy birthday." Jim laughed a little. "But he's still only 16. Needs a signature from a parent."

"Would you accept the signature of Mr. Lincoln and Mr. Washington?" Toby said, pulling out a one dollar and five dollar bill. The dealer took the six dollars and said. "Ten minutes. And it better not come back with a scratch." The dealer then gave Toby the keys and in turn Toby gave the keys to Jim. Jim put on the helmet and took the scooter he was dreaming about for a test drive, but the Fusion Phantom followed him.

For Noah, he was going to school early to catch up with his school work, when one of the Fusion Phantoms grabbed him. "What the!?" Noah said as the Fusion Phantom took Noah away. In the air, the Fusion Phantom was holding Noah by the arms, so Noah swung around so he could grab the Twin-Soul Driver and Blade. But even after Noah put them on, Seth didn't put in any of his Soul Disk. "What is that idiot brother of mine doing!?"

"Here you go." Seth said as he already gave Teika, who was in a bag, to Blinky and was putting shards from Efreet, Gnome, Sylph, Undine, and the frame of a ninja model motorcycle into a giant pot of boiling hot water, along with shards from a gold Soul Jewel. "Now I just need to keep stirring for the next few hours." Seth said as he looked at the recipe. When Seth was stirring the pot While stirring the pot, the Twin-Soul Driver appeared on his waist. Seth felt Noah filtration through the belt, but couldn't stop stirring, so he was looking for someone to stir for him.

Jim, on the other hand, was having a great time. He was enjoying driving the scooter, but the Fusion Phantom was still following him. Jim only noticed it when he was alone and when it was doing a dive bomb attack. Jim barely dodged it and drove away from people, to keep them safe, but not knowing that he was doing the Fusion Phantom a favor. Jim looked around for it, but found Steve, who saw Jim riding the scooter and followed him. As Jim was looking around for the Fusion Phantom, Steve said to Jim. "Nice wheels, understudy. I knew you wanted to be me, but this is pathetic."

"This is really not a good time right now, Steve."

"Time for what?"

"Whatever! This, you!"

"Whoa! You calling me out? You want to race?"

"No! What I want is to have nothing to do with you!"

"You think you can take me, buttmunch? Bring it!

"I don't want to bring anything!" Jim said as he saw the Fusion Phantom behind them and increased his speed. Steve took that as he wanted to race, not seeing the Fusion Phantom that was flying right behind them.

Back with Seth, he was able to use H.Q. stir the pot and he put in Efreet. With Noah, the Fusion Phantom touched him into the air and was going to eat him. But before Noah reached the Fusion Phantom's mouth the Driver said. "Efreet Blade!"

"Henshin!" Noah said as he quickly transformed. The blade for Efreet Blade was a two-side flaming sword. Soul then shot out a fire slash from his sword and it hit the Fusion Phantom's mouth. The Fusion Phantom closed his mouth and Soul landed on top of it. Seth then said to Noah as the Fusion Phantom tried to shake Soul off. "Sorry, bro… I, uh…?"

"Save it until after we kill this before it kills us." Noah said as he took out Efreet and Blade and placed them in the sword. "Wait? Noah!?" Seth said, but Noah didn't listen to him. The Driver then said. "Efreet Blade! Final Attack!" Then the sword started to get longer and the flames burned brighter. Seth sighed, before Soul said as he put the sword to his left side. "Final Attack! Rising Slash!" Soul then cut the Fusion Phantom's head and its left wing off. It then started to fly to the ground and Seth screamed to Noah as Soul grabbed Efreet and Blade. "I tried to warn you!"

"Be quiet!" Noah said as he put Efreet and Blade away and replaced them with Sylph and Fighter. "Sylph Fighter!" The Driver said as Soul turned into Sylph Fighter mode. Soul then used the wind power of Sylph to gently land on the ground. "See, I knew what I was doing." Noah said as the Fusion Phantom crashed not too far away from Soul and a piece of it landed next to Soul. Soul turned to the Fusion Phantom and saw that it was putting his head back on. Seth said as Soul picked up the piece. "Oh… That's not good."

"Yeah, let's get out of here." Noah said as they started to run to Trollmarket. Back with Jim, the race was over, because Steve almost hit a car, lost control of his scooter, crashed into a tree, and then rolled down the side of the road. However the chase was still underway. The Fusion Phantom kept dive bombing Jim. "For the glory of Merlin, Daylight is mine to command." Jim said as he equipped this armor on. As the Fusion Phantom attacked Jim, Jim countered it by swinging his sword. It wasn't until Soul appeared and kicked the Fusion Phantom away. Jim then said to Soul as Jim un-equipped his armor. "Guys did you just see that?"

"See that? We just fought one." Noah said before Seth said. "We need to go to Trollmarket."

"Yeah, Blinky might know what's… Oh, no." Jim said before Noah said. "What's wrong?"

"The mirror broke during the fight." Jim said, showing the broken left side rear view mirror. "We have bigger problems than a broken mirror." Noah said as Soul picked Jim and the scooter up and ran at great speed. Soul dropped off the scooter at the dealership and ran to Trollmakert, with both Fusion Phantom's recovered and following them again. In Trollmarket, Blinky and Aaarrrgghh, who had Teika in a bag, found Vendel and Blinky said to Vendel. "Ah, Vendel! Just the troll we've been looking for."

"Don't stop looking on my account."

"But it is imperative that you look upon this." Blinky said and Vendel stopped to see what Blinky had. Aaarrrgghh then pulled out Teika and Teika said to Aaarrrgghh. "Easy on the scruff!" Teika then turned to Vendel and said. "And what are you staring at, grandpa? Have you never seen a changeling before?" Tekia then looked around and said. "So, this is Trollmarket."

"A changeling?" Vendel said as Aaarrrgghh grabbed him. Blinky then said to Vendel. "You called me crazy, but who's the mad troll now, huh? Behold! I have proof!"

"Put that thing away! What are you trying to do? Incite a panic?" Vendel said as they took them away from the other trolls. Once they were alone, Teika said to Blinky. "Ey! I only came here cause you promised me socks to eat."

"And you'll get them."

"They better be argyle. And smelly." Teika said before Aaarrrgghh put Teika into the bag. Blinky then said to Vendel. "Do you finally believe me? Changelings, therefore bridge."

"Bridge, therefore panic. Have you heard nothing I've said? For once, you're right. And the horror of it. Threat of Gunmar's exile right over our heads, and all Trollmarket has to protect it is your human children."

"You can trust the Trollhunter and the Kamen Rider. In the face of the greatest danger, they will stand steadfast and gallant." Blinky said as Soul appeared with Jim, who was trying not to throw up. "Blinky! Jim and Noah were just attacked by creatures made from this!" Seth said, showing Blinky the piece of the Fusion Phantom Soul picked up. Vendel took the piece and said looking at it. "This is a piece of a Fusion Phantom made from a Lion and Hank Soul Jewel."

"What is a Fusion Phantom?" Noah said before Vendel said. "A Fusion Phantom is when two or more Soul Jewels are mixed together. This way not only makes the Phantom stronger, but makes copies of the Phantom equal to the number of Soul Jewel used in the making of one."

"That explains why we saw two of the same monster, but why didn't the Fusion Phantom we killed stay dead?" Seth said and Vendel said. "A Fusion Phantom and its copies must be killed at the same time or they will regenerate and attack again."

"Then why were they after us?" Jim said before Vendel looked at the piece then said. "Looks like these Fusion Phantoms are ordered to kill you two when you are alone or with one another. And Fusion Phantoms are very single minded. So they won't stop until you kill them or they kill you two."

"That doesn't sound good." Jim said as Vendel walked away. Blinky then said to Jim and Soul. "Fear not, Master Jim, Master Noah. As long as you are not alone, you will remain unharmed."

"You mean, we can't be alone for the rest of our lives?" Jim said before Blinky said. "Is that a problem? You seem quite social."

"This is why I hate birthdays." Noah said before he undid the transformation and Jim agreed with him. An hour later, Jim and Noah meet up with Toby at school. There they told him what happened and how they were going to avoid it, until they could figure out how to kill both of them at the same time. Toby also had some news. The dealer wanted the money Jim had been saving up to repair the mirror Jim broke during the fight. "There you are!" Claire said as she walked up to Jim. Jim looked at her and said. "Claire! I… I thought you weren't talking to me after I got you in trouble with your parents?"

"I'm sorry about what I said last night. It was really my fault not yours. Also there's a problem with the play." Claire said and before Jim could ask, Ms. Janeth appeared and said to them. "Jim! I hope you and Claire are ready to recreate the tragedy of true love."

"Huh?" Jim said and Ms. Janeth took that as a yes and said. "See you after school."

"What is she talking about?" Jim said to Claire and Claire said to Jim. "Steve totaled his Vespa and not only does he have a concussion, but has broken a lot of his bones. He won't be able to leave the hospital for a couple of weeks. We can't do Romeo and Juliet without Romeo, Jim."

"Uh, okay, but I'm still confused."

"You're the understudy for Romeo, remember? I need you to come back. I'm willing to beg."

"No, sure. Let me just see if I can get my mom to pick me up." Jim said as he called his mom. After school, Noah was hanging out with Jim's mom getting things for the party, and Jim was at rehearsal. During rehearsal Jim said his lines. "Forgive me! Forgive me!"

"Forgive me, cousin." Ms. Janeth said, correcting Jim. "Ah, right. Sorry. Got it." Jim said and Claire was amazed by Jim's acting skill. But the Fusion Phantoms were still watching them. After rehearsal, the sun was down and when the Fusion Phantom saw Jim, it snarled and Claire said looked around as they were walking out of the school. "What was that?"

"Uh, maybe I can walk you home?"

"That's sweet, but they are picking me up."

"Oh, no, no, no. My mom's picking me up, too. I just… Maybe we could keep each other company."

"Okay." Claire said before Jim heard the Fusion Phantom growl. Claire thought the growl was wind and said to Jim. "Are you all right?"

"Uh, yeah, just, um… I'm worried about the weather."

"Thanks again for stepping up today. You really saved the play."

"I try." Jim said as Claire's parents arrived. At that time, Noah called Jim on his Bat Phone. Claire didn't notice the phone and Jim said to Noah. "What's wrong, Noah?"

"Your mom is gone." Noah said as he was alone and running to Trollmarket with the Twin-Soul Driver already around his waist and Fighter inside. As Noah waited for Seth to put it Sylph, Jim said into his phone. "What!? Why!?"

"Your mom got an emergency call from work, so she had to go in. Look I'm heading to Trollmarket, you get someone to take you to Toby's house."

"Got it." Jim said, but saw that everyone was already gone. Even Claire just left him. "I'm alone too!"

"Then get to Trollmarket, FAST!" Noah said as he hoping Seth would do something. Back in Trollmarket, Blinky had finished the recipe Seth started as Seth ran to the door with the Horngazel. He then put Sylph into the Driver and almost fell down the steps. Jim, who rode his bike and Soul, who was in Sylph Fighter, reached the bridge above Trollmarket. They both reached the bridge at the same time, but before they could reach the door, the Fusion Phantoms surrounded them. As Jim equipped his armor and Soul turned into Gnome Archer. "Gnome Archer!" The Driver said before Jim said as they were all getting ready to fight. "Sixteenth birthday, but do I get a Vespa? No. I got a food processor and a killer Fusion Phantom!"

"Still think birthdays are good, bro?" Noah said before Seth said. "My opinion has not changed." Seth said as the Fusion Phantoms attacked them. Soul fired arrows at his Fusion Phantom to keep it away and Jim used his sword to slashed the talons of his Fusion Phantom when it tried to grab Jim. The battle was not making any progress for either side in kill the other side. Seth then said to Jim and Noah. "This isn't going anywhere?"

"Yeah. We need to defeat them at the same time, or we are going to be their dinner." Noah said before Jim said. "And how do we kill them at the same time!?"

"I'm open to ideas." Noah said before they then heard the sound of lighting approve them. The lighting and what Blinky said during training gave Jim an idea and Jim said to Soul. "Noah, Seth, do you guys have any group attacks that can fuse with lighting?"

"Yes we do." Noah said figuring out what Jim's idea was. So Soul switched out Gnome with Undine. "Undine Archer!" The Driver said before Soul put the disk into the bow and the Driver said. "Undine Archer! Final Attack!"

"Final Attack, Rain Arrows!" Soul said as he shot a big water arrow into the air. When the arrow reached a storm cloud, it broke apart as a lot of lightning bolts hit the arrow. Soon a bunch of water arrows with lighting bolts came crashing down on both Fusion Phantom's. The arrow hit all over the body and the lightning went through all of their bodies. Both of them screamed before they both exploded. As Jim and Noah returned to normal, and caught their breath. Seth ran up to them and dragged them inside Trollmarket. Toby, who was waiting for them along with Aaarrrgghh and Blinky, then blindfolded them and they went to Hero's Forge. "This better not be another surprise because I really don't think I can handle any more." Jim said before Noah said. "Me too."

"No, no. If my calculations are correct, there's only a few more minutes left of your birthing days. Time for one more present." Blinky said as he removed the blindfolds. Jim saw pieces of scooter and Noah saw Seth holding a big egg that was red, brown, green and blue. Seth then said to them. "We know these don't look like much…"

"Wait." Jim said as he took a closer look at the piece. Jim then said to them as he checked out the parts. "That's a 150 G.S. Four-speed gearbox, classic long saddle… Original handlebar headlamp unit! These are the pieces of a 1955 Vespa!"

"Thank Blinky for the parts." Seth said and Jim looked at Blinky. Blinky chuckled and said. "I thought perhaps one day we could build it together. After your training, of course."

"Thank you. Thank you! This is the best gift I've ever gotten!" Jim said while giving Blinky a hug. Blinky smiled and returned the hug. Seth then walked over to Noah and said giving Noah the egg. "Noah, this is a new Soul Gadget that will ride into battle with you, and allow you to fly, travel across water and all kinds of terrain." Noah took the egg and Seth said. "So do you like it?"

"Yes, I do like it." Noah said, wrapping his arm around Seth's shoulders. Toby then said to no one. "I knew we'd turn it around."
