Chapter Two: Bending Emotions
The soft glow of dusk settled over the Southern Water Tribe village. Aang stood just outside their home, nervously shifting his weight from one foot to the other. He had to tell Katara, even though he wasn't sure how.
Katara stepped out, her face warm but questioning. "You wanted to talk?"Aang nodded, his gaze darting away. "Yeah, uh... there's something important.""Okay," she said, crossing her arms with a small smile. "What is it?"Aang hesitated, rubbing the back of his neck. "I... I'm leaving for a little while."Katara frowned, the warmth in her eyes fading. "Leaving? Why?""It's—" Aang stammered, avoiding her eyes. "It's complicated.""Complicated how?" Katara pressed, stepping closer. "Aang, what's going on? Just tell me."He took a deep breath, finally meeting her gaze. "Zuko... asked me for a favor. He needs me to help find someone."
Katara's brow furrowed in concern. "Who?"Aang winced slightly before answering. "Azula."Katara's expression shifted to shock, then to anger. "Azula? Are you serious? And you agreed to this?""Zuko needs me," Aang said, trying to explain. "It's not something he can do publicly because of his position. I'm just... helping out."Katara crossed her arms tightly. "And you didn't think to ask me about this before agreeing? Or were you just planning to disappear again?""It's not like that!" Aang protested. "This isn't about me or my duties. Zuko thinks she's in danger, and no one else can really go after her."Katara's face flushed with anger. "It's never about us anymore, is it? It's always about your responsibilities, or your fame, or someone needing something from you.""That's not fair," Aang said, his voice lowering. "You know this is bigger than just me. Zuko—""Zuko doesn't matter to me right now, Aang!" Katara snapped. "I do. We do."
Aang struggled to find the right words, but nothing seemed to come out. Before he could respond, Sokka walked by, oblivious to the tension. "What's going on here? Trouble in paradise?"Katara shot him a glare, and without warning, she shoved him against the wall. "Not. Now."Sokka raised his hands, eyes wide in mock terror. "Whoa, whoa, easy there, sis. No need to take it out on me."Katara let him go, storming off without another word.
Aang took a step to follow her, but Sokka grabbed his shoulder, pulling him back."Let her go," Sokka said calmly. "You should know by now, the best way to get through an argument with Katara is to give her space. Let her cool off for a few days."Aang sighed heavily, looking in the direction she had gone. "I hate fighting with her. I never wanted this."Sokka shrugged. "It's part of being in love. Anyway, what's this about Azula?"Aang rubbed his forehead, feeling the weight of it all. "Zuko asked me to find her. He's worried about her—thinks she's in danger."Sokka shook his head firmly. "Nope. I'm not going anywhere near that psycho again."
"I figured as much," Aang said with a weak smile. "But... do you think Toph might help?"Sokka grinned knowingly. "Yeah, I'd talk to Toph if I were you. She'd be perfect for this."Aang nodded thoughtfully. "Thanks, Sokka. I'll ask her."Sokka clapped him on the back with a grin. "Good luck with that, buddy. You'll need it."
Aang watched him walk off, his mind already racing ahead. The task before him was daunting—tracking down Azula wouldn't be easy, even with Toph's help. He steeled himself, knowing that this was only the beginning of a difficult and uncertain journey.
