"Ash! Ash!"
Ash looked up from where he was working on some last-minute training for the Masters Eight – he thought Dragonite could get a little more impact out of her Draco Meteor, and it was really important to get a lot of impact out of a move like that – and waved. "Hey, Goh! What's up?"
"Professor Amaranth sent me a message," Goh explained, skidding to a halt. "She says that we might have a chance to go and find Mew in just a couple of days!"
He looked down. "I guess that might mean I miss the Masters Eight, so I can give up on-"
"No, no, if you have to go then it's fine!" Ash replied.
He frowned. "Though, uh, why is it so specific on the timing? It's not far, right?"
"Not far-" Goh said, then blinked. "Huh? Faraway Island is, um, far away, and it's surrounded by storms almost the whole year round! There's only a short period every year when we can even visit, that's why we've been preparing! It's our only chance to even see Mew!"
"Huh," Ash said, scratching his head. "That's weird. Is there a specific Mew you're after?"
Goh stared at Ash.
Then looked at his Dragonite, who waved cheerfully
"Are – have you been listening to any of the stuff I've said for the whole time we've been friends?" Goh asked.
"Yeah!" Ash replied, somewhat indignantly. "You wanted to have Mew as your starter, and that's changed, but you still want to catch every Pokémon. But I always thought that was about catching Mew, not seeing Mew, because otherwise you'd just go to Rota."
"Pika pika, Pikapi!" Pikachu said.
"Hey, I trust Goh!" Ash replied. "Besides, that Mew was a bit of a jerk. And Goh knows how important it can be to let a Legendary Pokémon go about their own business, so the same must be true for Mythical Pokémon, right?"
Goh was trying to lever his jaw closed.
"What do you mean, Rota?" he said.
"There's a Mew there," Ash explained simply. "They're part of how the Tree of Beginning works. It's… kind of a painful memory because Sir Aaron's Lucario died there, and maybe he wouldn't have if the Mew wasn't such a Pikachu-stealing jerk, but… anyway, if all you want is to see a Mew then we can head over there really easily. Who's faster, your Aerodactyl or Flygon?"
"Niite?" Dragonite asked. "Drago-Dragonite?"
"Yeah, we're going to Rota!" Ash agreed. "It's near Pewter City, I don't know in what direction but I'll recognize the castle and the big tree!"
Goh was still trying to reboot his brain.
