"No," Volo said, shaking their head. "No. This shouldn't be how it ends. This isn't how it ends!"

Akari hefted one of her Pokéballs, experimentally, but Volo had a glint of wild light in his eye.

"GIRATINA!" he shouted, and shadows pooled around them.

"I don't understand!" Akari said, as Giratina rose out of the darkness. "Why is Giratina helping you do… whatever you're trying to do!"

"When I was born, I knew that our Father had roles in mind for my brother, Dialga, and my sister, Palkia," Giratina replied, rising to their full height. "Dialga set time in motion. Palkia gave space a place to be. But I was… the residue. The unneeded. The unfortunate consequence. And I knew Despair."

The Renegade Pokémon's golden armour glowed, giving them an ethereal quality that was not, really, so very different from Arceus. "Then, there were new creations. The beings of Spirit, Uxie, Mesprit, Azelf. Who, too, were given a role in shaping the world. And that was when I learned that I would never have any part in Father's creation. And I knew Rage."

Volo stepped back, into the shape formed by Giratina's body, and the ghostly Dragon leaned down towards Akari. "And when I expressed that rage, Father locked me away in the other side of this world. An empty, misty nothingness, there only because it was necessary for his true creation… just like me. And I could watch every other creature enjoying the fruits of what Father had done… everything, everyone, except me. And for untold thousands of years, I have known Envy."

"But the Reverse World's cool," Akari protested. "It's not the same as the material world, but it's beautiful in its own way."

"It-"

"How could you even know that?" Volo demanded. "You've never seen the Reverse World! You fell out of the sky remembering nothing!"

They scowled. "Or was that a lie, too?"

"Well… I don't remember years of my life," Akari said. "I don't know why I'm suddenly fifteen, when the last I could remember before the rift I was twelve. I don't know where my Pokémon went. But I do remember Giratina, and the Giratina I know is… kind. And full of rage, if they've been wronged, but… they liked living in the Reverse World, so long as they could leave."

She put the Pokéball she was holding back in her pocket. "I don't know if that's the answer you want to hear, but it's the truth. You even gave one of my friends a ride on your back, and then you and Palkia kept Arceus busy while Dialga threw us back in time to change history… not this time, the other time."

A long pause.

"Do you expect me to believe that?" Giratina asked.

"Honestly, not really, because you're really angry," Akari replied. "But I do have this."

She reached into her other pocket, and held it out.

"It's the only Poffin I've managed to make so far," she said. "But my other friend found out what you liked, and… I'm pretty sure I remembered it."

One of Giratina's wing tendrils grabbed the Poffin from her hand, and Giratina swallowed it in a single bite.

"Volo," they said, in exactly the same tones as before. "I have only known this human girl for five minutes, but if I did anything to her then I would destroy myself."

"...what!?" Volo asked, completely baffled.

"She literally just met me and she gave me baked goods. Did you ever give me baked goods?"
