26: The Incredible Journey

Spring gave way to a surprise Regina had not expected. It was a normal day in Two Witches until Zelena showed up mid-afternoon. She was loud enough for Regina to hear her calling for Regina from in the kitchen. Maleficent looked at Regina, who shrugged. Regina stepped out of the back, catching sight of Zelena, holding a bundle close to her chest. Okay, so she did have a baby. Mother more than likely had a heart attack when it happened.

"Regina, it's been a while," Zelena said with a grin, as if they were friends. Yes, they had been texting over the past few months, but they had both been quite cautious in what they said. Maybe just the act of reaching out meant something to Zelena, as it was not something either of them did. They tended to only interact when they were forced to be around each other now.

Regina stepped closer. "Indeed. You've kept Mother busy for nearly a year."

"Oh, no, she gave up on me once Robyn was born." Zelena held up her daughter.

Regina did not have time to react to the name. Her eyes fell on the baby. She was tiny. Quite young, but Regina was not sure how old she was. Hell, she had not been sure Zelena was pregnant until now. This was almost surreal. And she was unable to imagine Mother giving up and not coming back to torment her. What in the world was going on?

"What happened?" Regina asked as she motioned for Zelena to come deeper into the cafe, away from prying eyes and readied phones.

"It's a long story," Zelena replied with a drawn out sigh.

"Order some food and tell me. It had to be incredible to push Mother to run to Europe after you."

Zelena nodded and stepped to the counter to order. Tinker Bell was bright and friendly as always, giving her usual suggestions to help Zelena choose. Zelena rolled her eyes.

"Bit on the cheery side, isn't she?" Zelena asked with a scowl.

"Be nice. Tink is Mal's second favorite cousin," Regina replied.

Tinker Bell gasped, hand to her chest. "Second? You think Nova tops me in anything?"

Regina pointed to Nova, checking in on a table. "Looks like she's doing that right now. Besides, you think Nova is best at everything."

Tinker Bell blushed. "Shut up. She's my big sister, after all."

Regina used to dream of having such a sentiment. The older sister worship in her had faded long ago. For most of it, Mother was to blame. She snatched Zelena from Regina's life and purposely put a wedge between them in the form of an entire ocean.

"Oh, so this little shop is with Maleficent," Zelena said with a wicked smile, snapping Regina from her thoughts. "Mother had to love that when she found out."

"She's waiting for us to fail, so she can say I told you so to me," Regina replied.

Zelena nodded. "One of her favorite parenting styles with you. Didn't this lead to you becoming the first female and youngest mayor in Storybrooke history before?"

Regina threw her hands up. "She's the parent." Of course, her mother had left her to a terrible fate, dealing with Gold. But, someone who loved her helped snatch her free of that ordeal rather than waiting for her to come begging for assistance. Mother always expected them to come back, on hands and knees, and then crawl through broken glass on their bellies for her to help them. Never again, hopefully.

Zelena's order was placed in front of her, a simple egg salad panini and fries. Regina grabbed Zelena an iced tea, as that was one of Zelena's favorite drinks, even though she sort of resented it. They sat down at a corner table, away from everyone else. Zelena took out a bottle to feed the baby.

"What's the baby's name?" Regina asked. Zelena had said it, Regina was sure, but her brain had not held it.

"Robyn."

Regina blinked. "Robin?" Her stomach twisted. It's fine. Calm down. "How… how'd you come up with such a name?" She took a soft inhale and slowly let it out.

"I went into labor on a train and had no idea what was happening. A kind woman who happened to also be a nurse helped me all the way to the hospital. Her name was Robyn. I thought it only appropriate to name my daughter after her." Zelena cooed down to the infant. "You're such a cute little Robyn, aren't you, poppet?" She blew kisses.

Wow. Regina had a niece. She peered over at her niece. She was perfect from what Regina was able to discern. I want to hold her. She would hold off until Zelena at least finished feeding her.

"So, what happened? This was bad enough to pull Mother away from me and her trying to map out what to do with my life after being mayor," Regina said.

Zelena sighed and focused on the baby for a long moment. "I don't think I can thoroughly explain this, as it's rather muddled, even to me. I'm not quite sure what I was thinking. I was entangled with a man who to this day I'm not sure if I wanted to piss Mother off or prove to her that I could marry up."

"Yes, things tend to end up muddled when dealing with Mother. To this day, I'm not sure I became mayor to spite Mother or prove my worth or do my own thing or a combination of those things. Hell, maybe there are reasons I didn't bother to consider."

Zelena nodded. "I completely understand it, especially with this. I think I went out with him to some popular venue and that was how she found out. She made her opinion of what was happening quite known, which, of course, made me double down. It was a mistake as he was a complete wanker."

Regina nodded, eyes falling to Robyn for a moment. "And her father," she guessed.

"Unfortunately, I didn't catch it at the time. She had actually been part of the plan to force him to marry me and again show Mother that I could marry up. I could do what she did, what she wanted you to do, and that would… show her? Prove I was worthy of being her daughter?" Zelena squinted and shook her head. "I'm not sure."

Regina gave her a small smile. "I understand. After all, she's my mother, too, and I've made confusing moves because of her." Her stint as a mayor, a job she never wanted or cared for, was proof of that.

"Yes, but… anyway. The more time I spent with him, the stupider I felt, more so when I got pregnant. It was clear he had no intention of marrying me and the way he spoke of me… of her…" Zelena's face grew sour.

"You've witnessed decent relationships, decent family lives, and decent people. You weren't ready to settle for anything less than that to beat Mother," Regina replied.

"Exactly. And, as she grew inside of me, the stupider I felt. And, it wasn't even him. How dare I use this sweet child as part of some plot I couldn't even figure out what I was doing, a plot that wasn't working. And then I realized, Regina… I was Mother." Zelena's face was full of horror. Her eyes lined and chilled.

Regina did not pull any punches. "I'm surprised that bothers you."

"Wanting her approval and being her are two different things. I can very much recognize our mother is terrible and I had no intention of being her with my daughter. I never want her to look at me how I see you look at Mother."

Regina could only imagine how she looked at Mother considering most of the time she was afraid of Mother. She never knew Zelena had the empathy or ability to tell. In fact, she never knew anyone could tell, beyond maybe her father, but he was much too scared to do anything about it.

"What happened with him?" Regina asked.

"He was so spooked when Mother showed up. I barely had to convince him to go to London with me."

"Mother's reputation always proceeds her."

"I think he feared Mother would disappear him as she has a habit of doing to people who leave a bad taste in her mouth. While we were in the UK, he got more and more paranoid. I think she was in contact with him. He talked me into going to the continent, but that didn't help. I suggested Australia."

"Your second home," Regina said. Once Zelena had been sent to boarding school in the UK, she made friends and one of her closest friends was from Australia. Zelena spent more vacations there than with the Mills family.

"Indeed. He abandoned me when we were in Australia. I was seven months pregnant at the time. I'm not entirely sure what happened, but I suspect Mother got word to him what she planned to do with him when she finally got ahold of him and the threat finally worked."

Regina tilted her head. "Was he not as upper-class as he presented himself?" This would explain Mother's attitude toward him.

Zelena nodded. "I only recently found out he doesn't have a penny to his name. He conned me, if you can believe it." She waved it off, like it was water under the bridge.

Regina believed it, considering Zelena tried so hard to do what their mother wanted, needing their mother's approval. Well, sometimes. Other times, Zelena was quite aware of how messed up their mother was. Unfortunately, Zelena, like Regina, was traumatized enough to want their mother to love her and, thus, would do crazy things for that love. They also missed obvious signs when they tried to coax their mother into loving them. They also missed obvious signs when they attempted to prove their mother wrong.

"I understand why Mother was so pissed with you. Did she want you to abort?" Regina asked. Zelena was repeating history way too much for Mother's taste.

"Yes, which is why she stopped hunting me once Robyn was born. I'm now soiled goods to her. I'll never achieve what she wants, in her opinion anyway," Zelena replied, to the point of bragging. It was like she realized she was free.

"You seem pleased with that." Of course, it was funny for Mother to come to the conclusion that Zelena was soiled for the upper classes thanks to her out-of-wedlock baby. But, whatever made Mother go away was always welcomed.

"Because I am. Regina, holding this darling child…" Zelena looked down at Robyn with gentle eyes.

There was so much love in Zelena's gaze. It was hard to believe because this was Zelena, after all. Regina softened at the sight. When Zelena focused on her again, her expression was still the very definition of tender.

"She changed my life, changed my mind," Zelena said. "She went from being a stupid scheme to prove to Mother I was able to do what you were incapable of, namely marry rich, to being this tiny life who depended on me and all I could think was 'I can't turn into Mother.' I was so close to being exactly what Mother was to me, Regina." She shuddered, chilled at the idea.

"But, you didn't. You aren't."

Zelena took in a shivering breath. "Regina, I can't let this child see me the way we see Mother. Mother is a monster." She said it with the conviction they both were certain of.

Regina nodded. "I understand, better than anyone else ever will. If I had a child, I'd feel the same way." She would never want to parent the way Mother did. She would never forgive herself if her child viewed her the way she viewed Mother.

Zelena smiled. "Yes, I assumed so."

"So, are you going to let me hold my niece or what?" Regina grinned.

Zelena chuckled and passed Robyn along. The baby cooed, but her eyes were closed. She was asleep. Still, Regina cuddled her close and breathed her in. The scent made her sigh.

"She smells wonderful," Regina said. That perfect baby aroma.

Zelena nodded and bit into her sandwich. She let out a surprised squeak. "I'm not surprised by how scrumptious this is."

"It's only an egg salad sandwich."

Zelena nodded and they were quiet for a moment. "So, I've purchased a house here, as I figured you'd want to bond with your niece and I assume you'd be good for her."

"Thank you for that."

"No, thank you for being the person to bridge the gap. Your text messages helped get me through things, especially as my relationship with her father soured. Then, there were times when Mother was so close and I was exhausted. Then, you'd text and I couldn't let her win. I wouldn't let her be right. I wouldn't fail us again."

Regina smiled, even though she was unsure who "us" was. It did not matter. "And now you've come out the other side. We can find her detestable father and sue him for child support or at least have him renounce his parental rights."

"No need. He never signed the birth certificate."

"Still. Better safe than sorry. God forbid he pops back up later in her life claiming he wants to be in her life and blames you for whatever happened."

"So true."

"I'm glad you want me in her life, though. I look forward to getting to know her."

Zelena smiled, cheeks flushed. "I look forward to getting to know you."

"I have to say, Zelena, I wasn't expecting this, especially when I started texting with you. I never thought you'd finally recognize Mother for who she is. I never thought you'd want to have a real relationship with me."

"It took a lot, as you can tell." Zelena took a moment to focus on her food. "I've always wanted a relationship with you, though. You've always been my sister. Mother has been able to get between us, but you've always been my sister."

Regina's heart thumped, but she would wait to witness her sister's sincerity. "I feel the same. I've always wanted the chance to be your sister, full-time."

Zelena nodded. "Yes, agreed. Has Mother been back by you? She left me alone two months ago."

Regina shook her head. "No, as I said, she's more than likely waiting for my business to blow up in my face. It's one of her greatest pleasures to use your failure against you."

Zelena looked around. "From the taste of the food and the crowd you have at this off-hour, she might have to wait a while."

"I should hope so." Regina also hoped this was the start of something new. She would have to wait and see. This might be a trick. Zelena might be trying to worm her way into Mother's good graces by spying on Regina. It would not be the first time. But, she would hope.

Emma loved her job, even though as the weather got nicer criminals crawled out of every crack and crevice Storybrooke had to offer. Most days, though, she got to exercise her skills and special insight, which was helpful. It filled her with pride, but also she came home with more than her fair share of bumps, bruises, and cuts. Yes, it freaked Regina out, but it also got her so much attention from Regina that it was worth it.

"I swear you tear more pants than a five-year-old child," Regina grumbled as she sat on the couch, mending Emma's pants, because, of course, she knew how to mend clothes. She's such a weird rich person.

Emma grinned, chin in the air with misplaced pride like the brat she was allowed to be. The bell on her collar sang out from the movement. "According to Mulan, I definitely have Roland beat there."

"I believe her. He's always the perfect gentleman when I'm around him."

Emma rolled her eyes. "Yeah, well, you don't run around with him in the park like I do. That kid has not met a tree that he didn't want to climb."

Regina scoffed. "You don't have to follow him up them. Yes, I understand that you're a feral cat, but cats don't wear pants to snag on branches."

A laugh escaped Emma. "You got me there. It's a lot of fun, though."

"Fun for whom?" Regina held up the pants before going back to her task.

Emma gave Regina a break and was quiet for a moment, focusing on the chocolate float Regina made for her. She had never had one of these except for in a diner. It was as delicious as she expected, but she definitely had not expected it. She loved Regina's ability to surprise her with treats a year later.

"Since the weather is getting nicer, I was wondering if you'd be okay with us hosting a get-together," Emma said. "I want my old friends to meet my new friends and I'm not sure having almost ten people anywhere works beyond the backyard unless we all meet in the park. I'm not sure how open they'd all be to that."

Regina's eyes sparkled and then leaned over, wiping whipped cream from Emma's nose. "We can do a tasting here. Your friends get free goodies while Maleficent and I try to expand our menu and try some spring and summer treats."

"I love that idea." She would be of absolutely no help, just happy to eat everything. "I want all the goodies."

"Of course you do."

"Ever think of serving floats? This is so damn delicious." Emma gulped down a large amount of ice cream and then winced. Brain freeze.

"I'll run it by Mal. I think she wants to try snow cones for the summer, but we'll see. I'll add this to the tasting menu. This would be the perfect time for you to meet my sister. She's purchased a house here in Storybrooke and plans to raise my niece here."

Emma nodded. "You said. You sure it's okay for her to meet me?"

"It should be fine. With people around, you two won't have to be awkward with each other. You can turn your attention to others and then ease your way into any conversation you might have."

"Sounds reasonable. Will she tell your mom?" Emma asked with furrowed eyebrows.

"I'm sure my mother already knows everything about you. I'm not sure she understands what you mean to me. If anything, she thinks Two Witches is the most important thing in my life right now and she can't go after that without earning Maleficent's shared wrath. Not to mention, I think you might be under Rumple's protection."

Emma blinked. This was news to her. "What the hell for?" She was a little insulted by that.

"From my understanding of things, he's rekindled a relationship with his son. Technically, he owes that to you. And, perhaps his son has told him of your past and he understands you hold the power to ruin his son's reputation if you want. Whatever the reason, from what I've heard, he's willing to stick up for you if necessary."

"As long as I don't end up owing him, cool." Emma would not do any more dealings with slime like Gold.

"You should be fine. So, do you think you and your friends would like to help with a tasting?"

"You know I'm all for it. I want to eat treats until my teeth fall out."

Regina shook her head. "Of course you do. And, Will is more than willing to follow you with that."

"David, too. But, I want you to meet my friend, Belle. She's the town librarian. I know smart people, too." Emma was boasting, not quite sure why. She wanted Regina to like all of her friends, but especially Belle. Belle was so shy and came across as married to her job. She needed awesome friends.

Regina chuckled as she continued sewing Emma's pants. "I'm aware of her. See if your friends are interested in the tasting and I'll set things up with Maleficent. We might try some drinks as well since you want to do the floats."

"I'm hungry already." Emma texted her friends while Regina fixed her pants. By the time Regina was done, Emma was, too. "Well, my people are down. Free food never fails to motivate us."

"I can believe that. Let me get in touch with Maleficent and we'll figure out the day."

"Tink and Nova are going to come, too, right?"

"I'm not sure why they wouldn't. Maleficent is still trying to socialize them as best she can."

"I think her goal needs to be to socialize Tink a little less. I don't think she's never met a friend. I seriously think she might get in a stranger's van one day."

"You might be correct in that assumption."

The day for the little gathering turned out to be a Sunday a week from the idea. Regina and Maleficent spent all morning cooking, which was not their usual fare. Sunday was their day off. But, they seemed happy about it. Emma stayed out of their way, hanging out in her nest.

There were still so many toys in her nest. She had not had a chance to mess with any of them recently thanks to work. She picked up some of them and put them away. Then, she sat on the bench and just thought about the purpose of this place.

"Regina wanted to be a mom," Emma whispered to herself. Would she like to be a mom? She would love to have a family. Well, I have that with Regina and everyone else. She would not mind more family, though.

Emma was not sure if she would be a good mom, hell, even an okay mom. But, Regina would be amazing. Would their relationship make it to a point where they would have that conversation in an earnest, serious manner? Her heart sped up a moment. She wanted that.

She did not dwell on the feeling as David and Snow arrived at the house. She let them in, greeting them both with hugs. Ruby was right behind them.

Emma did not have much of a chance to have a conversation with her friends before she had to let in Tink and Nova. Belle came in a couple of minutes later. Emma handled all of the introductions until it was impossible. A redheaded stranger arrived with a baby.

"Zelena, I'm surprised you're on time," Regina said as she stepped into the living room. She gave the redhead air kisses.

Zelena rolled her eyes. "I told you I'm trying to be better. Now, take your niece. She needs to drool on someone else for a moment." She put the baby in Regina's arms.

Regina accepted with a grin. She cooed at the baby and then looked up at everyone. She yelped and a slight blush colored her cheeks. "I'm sorry, everyone. This is my sister, Zelena. Maleficent, if you might handle the introductions while I simply enjoy this little one." Regina hugged the baby to her.

Maleficent went through everyone, giving introductions and brief explanations as to why they were there. Tink and Nova helped bring out the food. They also brought out two pitchers — one lemonade and the other iced tea. These might become in-house drinks if the group liked them. Right before the tasting started, Mulan arrived with Marian and Roland.

"Hey, Roland!" Will gave Roland a high-five. Emma also gave him a high-five and then David got in with his high-five.

"You ready to taste some treats?" Dorothy asked as she also gave Roland a high-five.

Roland grinned. His face lit up, like he knew how great this would be. And it was definitely great. There were so many different foods, even though Regina and Maleficent would probably only do about five of them for the spring. There were also floats and milkshakes.

Conversation flowed between all of them, topics coming up at a rapid pace. Emma was pleased that Belle got along with everyone. It helped that she was knowledgeable on so many things. Will's and David's minds were blown almost every time Belle opened her mouth. Emma was the same.

Dorothy seemed particularly interested in Ruby, which was cool. Ruby had broken up with her girlfriend months ago and needed to get back out there. Emma thought Ruby might go more for Belle, but only time would tell with any of them. No matter, she hoped they all left with new friends.

Snow was interested in everyone, smiling as she moved from conversation to conversation. Marian and Regina got along well now, like old friends. Maleficent stayed mostly locked in conversation with Zelena, interrogating her as far as Emma could tell. She resisted the urge to jump in. Emma would watch Zelena until she proved not to be a threat.

Emma enjoyed the gathering beyond the food. She enjoyed sharing her toys with Roland once he ate too much and needed something to occupy himself. Tink joined them in putting together a puzzle after a while.

When the food ran out, they turned on a movie and just hung out. Regina seemed happy with the setup, not at all anxious over their company and conversing with several people. In fact, she looked comfortable. It was pretty amazing. But, by the end of the night, Emma was exhausted. It was cool for one day, but she did not want to do that again any time soon.

-8-8-8-8-

Regina began cleaning up from the tasting after shooing Emma off to shower. It was clear Emma was drained from a full day of company. Regina was not a fan of so much company, but holding Robyn most of the day and interacting with Roland made things so much easier. Plus, she enjoyed speaking with Marian whenever she got the chance.

There was also the fact that every time she was around Zelena, she was more and more confident Zelena was truthful in wanting to be her sister. Maleficent agreed with that, which made Regina more confident. It was a marvelous day.

Emma returned downstairs, clad in a white tank and black joggers with fuzzy socks. And, of course, her collar. She went right to Regina, wrapping her arms around Regina's waist and nuzzling her neck. Regina put her hand on Emma's hand.

"Was it killing you to not have your collar on in the house with everyone around?" Regina asked with a teasing grin.

"It's just nice to put on. It's like putting on comfortable slippers. I mean, I like my necklace and everything, but it's definitely like wearing my fancy shoes. You want me to do anything?" Emma inhaled against Regina's neck.

"Find us something to wind down to. I need to load the dishwasher and then I'm done."

"You want me to start you a shower or anything?"

Regina patted Emma's hand. "Just a show or movie. I don't need a long shower or anything. This wasn't like having a long day of work or anything."

Emma nodded and went off to find something for them to curl up on the couch together. Regina went to shower, returned in only a t-shirt that belonged to Emma, and found wine and pie waiting. She wasted no time sitting down, leaning against Emma. Emma wrapped her arms around Regina.

"You look good in my shirt," Emma said.

"If the next words out of your mouth are 'I bet you look better out of it,' you're sleeping in the yard," Regina replied.

Emma gasped. "You never brought me a proper doghouse for that."

Regina smirked. "Then choose your next words carefully."

Emma gave it a few seconds. "Funny, I expected your sister to be scarier than she was."

Regina chuckled. "Give her time. She's absolutely mad on a good day. Regardless, I hope she's genuine in wanting us to get along. I'm already so attached to Robyn. I'm not letting her go."

"I could steal her for you if you like," Emma said with a snicker.

Regina laughed. "We'll save that for plan B if Zelena proves to actually be on Mother's side. She seems to adore Robyn."

"She's tiny. I didn't know babies were so small."

"You'll be quite surprised by how quickly she grows, again if we're allowed to see that."

Emma nodded. "I think you should have some faith. I don't know your sister, but since she's shown up, you've only said good things."

Regina sighed. "Well, so far, she's only done good things. I'm trying my best to have faith. It's hard."

"I know." Emma took her hand and squeezed. "But, we're proof it works sometimes."

"This is true."

"Do you still want kids?"

"I would like children, yes."

Emma's brow furrowed. She grabbed her glass of wine and took a sip. Regina took her hand and caressed Emma's knuckles, hoping to ease whatever nerves Emma allowed to bubble up inside of her.

"If you don't want children, you can tell me, Emma," Regina said.

"I'm not sure if I do. You think I'd be an okay mom? I've never had a good example," Emma replied.

Regina kissed the side of her head. "I also never had a good example. When I spent time with Roland, I always just went with what made him happy, but kept him safe. I liked making him feel special and cared for."

"That's what you do for me."

A smile spread across Regina's face. "And you do that for me. I always feel special and cared for with you. I think you'd be an amazing mother. You'd put yourself into that role with the same energy you put into being my pet and brightening my life. You'd put the same energy in it that you give to being an extraordinary deputy. You already know what you don't want to do because you had it happen to you, which is a philosophy I also plan to go by."

"That definitely makes sense. There's tons of stuff I don't want to do. A long list of things no kid ever deserves."

"Same."

"What would happen if I don't want kids?" Emma asked.

Regina ran her fingers through Emma's hair. "I like to think we'd be able to work things out. I love you. You're my precious Duckling. I can't see myself parting with you to be with someone else because of children or lack thereof. I'd like to raise children with you, though."

Emma smiled. "You think I'd be able to raise children?"

"I have faith in you, my love. You have to be aware of how much you've grown since we've gotten together. I think you'll continue to grow and I'm sure if you decide you want to raise children with me, we will be able to raise wonderful children together."

Emma sighed. "You always make me feel like I can do anything."

"I've seen you do the impossible without needing me at all. As far as I'm concerned, it's a fact that if you decided to be a mother, you'd be one hell of a mother. I'd be more than proud to be a parent with you."

Emma kissed Regina, as if she needed to do it at that very moment. "I know I say this a lot, but I love you."

Regina's face brightened. "I love you as well."

"I think I could raise kids with you, Regina. I'd be a little sad because I couldn't wear my collar every day around the house, but I'd do my best to be the best damn mother possible to our kids."

Regina put a finger to Emma's collar. "You honestly believe you'll want to wear this years into this relationship?"

Emma sighed. "I really like my collar. I can't explain to you the security it always drives home. It's almost like a kid's blankie or something. I like being your pet, your Duckling. Always."

"Well, if children ever do happen, you don't have to stop. The collar can easily become smaller and more stylish if the necklace doesn't do anything for you. Something you might want to wear outside. Then, this collar and your bell collar can be used in our room."

Emma nodded. "You've got all the answers, huh?"

Regina snickered. "That's what you pay me for."

"I pay you? You pay me with sweet kisses." Emma was never subtle, so Regina wasted no time kissing her. Emma sighed against her lips. "I look forward to this for the rest of my life. Love your kisses."

Regina chuckled. "I look forward to a lifetime of paying you in kisses."
