Chapter four

For a brief moment, Megan thought that something had gone wrong (well, more wrong than her life was already going), and that she'd jumped back into the med-bay. It took her a few moments to realise that it wasn't the same room she had been in before. This seemed more like a doctor's office.

She tried the only door and stepped into a hallway. Directly in front of her, two people were squatting, hiding behind some plants. Judging by the suit and skinny-ness of one, it was the tenth Doctor. Which would make the black-haired woman beside him Martha Jones. Megan could hear several people crying out in fear from the floor below, so she crouched down as well and crawled to join the two.

"What's going on here?" she said in a low voice.

The Doctor's head snapped towards her. "Meg!" He beamed, using one arm to give her a side-hug. "Nice to see you, where have you been?"

"Dinosaurs on-" she cut herself off. "Your future, actually. But I-"

"I'm sorry, who are you?" Martha interrupted.

"Friend of mine! Megan, Martha, Martha, Megan," the Doctor said, and the two women nodded politely at each other. "Anyway, the Judoon probably used an H2O-scoop to get us here."

Megan's eyes widened. "Oh! We're on the moon?"

Martha frowned and let out an incredulous laugh. "What, you just noticed?"

"I just got here, long story." Megan turned to the Doctor. "Can I just tell you what I remember?"

A small frown formed on the Doctor's face. "Course you can."

"Right, so. They're looking for some sort of fugitive, an old woman? She did something, and now they're after her. But she's going to try and blow up the hospital. Or the moon? In any case, she drinks blood to disguise herself."

The Doctor perked up at that last bit of information. "A plasmavore! Oh that's clever…"

Martha let out an incredulous laugh. "I'm sorry, a what? How do you know all of this?"

"If she's a plasmavore, the Judoon won't find her with their scan," the Doctor said, completely ignoring Martha as he stood up. "Still, I'm sure we'll think of something. Best keep out of their way, though. Don't want to get scanned."

"Why?" Martha asked, laughing when the Doctor just looked at her. "Oh, you're kidding me. Don't be ridiculous." She looked from the Doctor to Megan, neither of them saying anything. Her smile fell. "Stop looking at me like that… the both of you?"

"No," Megan said.

"Yes," the Doctor said as he held out his hand to help Megan up.

"What?" Megan and Martha said.

"Oh…" the Doctor said, eyeing Megan. "I'm sorry, I- you've always known."

"Of course I did, I just got here yesterday and you blabbed!" Megan whisper-yelled, smacking his outstretched hand before getting up herself. "Should've seen that coming, I guess. What's next, I get superpowers from the time vortex?" She immediately held up her hand to the Doctor's face. "Don't. I genuinely don't want to know. Let's just get a move on."

~O~

Megan let herself fall down face-first onto her new bed. Well, technically it wasn't her new bed. She did have a room in the Tardis, only it was exactly like her bedroom back home. Naturally, she had a breakdown at the sight of it, and the Doctor moved her to a nice bit impersonal bedroom instead, almost hotel-esque.

Finding that she couldn't breathe with her face smushed into a pillow, she turned around to lie on her back, scenes of her day playing out in her head.

They turned around the corner, almost walking right into a judoon holding its scanner out. Instead, it was pointed at Megan's forehead. "Non-human."

"Well there's the proof for that," Megan mumbled as the Doctor grabbed her and Martha's hand, turning to run the other way again.

"My life is in shambles." Megan whispered to nobody in particular.

"No, no, no!" the Doctor said, head moving to look at the opposite sides of the corridor, the judoon getting closer from both. "I need more time. Martha, you have to hold them up."

Martha frowned, slightly panicked. "What do I do?"

"Just forgive me for this, it means nothing." His eyes moved to meet Megan's. "Absolutely nothing," he emphasised before turning back to Martha and pulling her into a long, hard kiss. He stepped away and grabbed Megan's hand, pulling her into the MRI room with him.

"Why did he care so much about me knowing it meant nothing?"

Megan watched in horror as Martha's chest compressions became more and more sluggish. Apparently it's not enough to do a few beats and breathe into somebody's mouth a few times, and it was exhausting enough that she needed Megan to do the mouth-to-mouth. Black spots were already creeping into her vision when she did so for the third time, after which both she and Martha collapsed onto the ground on either side of the Doctor. For a second, Megan was convinced that would be it, as the Doctor was not moving. Until, of course, he did.

"And of course I passed out afterwards. And I didn't even change anything! It's like I only actually matter in moments that were never broadcast." Megan felt a brick form in her stomach as realisation hit her. "I'm talking to myself. Out loud. Multiple thoughts and sentences. I am officially going insane!" She groaned as she rolled off of the bed, thinking that a nice long shower might do her some good. "I mean, what are the chances of me jumping whilst still fully nude?" Her face fell. "I'm doing it again. Fuck."

A/N: Okay, so what do you think of this format? It's much more fun for me to write, and hopefully also not as boring for you to read? If it sucks, let me know.
