Even Keen Eyes Can't See Everything
Warning: Violence, Profanities, and Abuse
Chapter 2
When the team got to LAPD's headquarters, They were greeted by two detectives. The lead detective, Sarah Night, and her partner, Mallory Ashwood, stood outside the station. Agent Hotchner introduced his team.
"Good morning, Detective Night." Agent Hotchner said formally. Detective Night held out her hand. Agent Hotch shook it. Detective Ashwood stepped forward for a handshake as well. "This is my team."
He pointed to an older man to his immediate left. "This is SSA David Rossi."
Agent Hotchner pointed at the person beside Agent Rossi. "This is SSA Emily Prentiss."
He gestured to the woman beside Agent Prentiss. "This is SSA Jennifer Jareau."
Agent Hotchner then moved to his right side. He pointed to the person on his immediate Right. " SSA Derek Morgan, SSA Spencer Reid, and our Communications Liaison, SSA Marina Winter."
"It's a pleasure to have you all here. " Detective Night said, greatly relieved by the presence of some of the best FBI agents in the country. Her eyes landed on Mia. She only slightly raised an eyebrow. 'Marina Winter?'
Mia broke eye contact. She could tell what the detective was thinking. 'Marina, is your name now?' Detective Ashwood's gaze also lingered on Mia. After silence, Detective Ashwood spoke up for the first time. "I'll show you guys to the conference room we set up."
Everyone nodded. Mia stayed at the back of the group as the team began heading to the conference room. Detective Night walked next to her.
"It's nice to see you again…. Marina," Detective Night said in a whisper. It took her a moment to remember Mia's new name. "This isn't exactly the way I imagined we'd see each other again. I wish It could have been under better circumstances."
Mia simply nodded. She didn't exactly want to talk to Sarah or Mallory. Sarah, Mia, and Mallory had been childhood best friends since preschool. All three women had dreamed of being police officers together, and maybe even detectives together. When Mia left, she was glad to know that Sarah and Mallory had continued with their dreams. Now that Mia had returned, it was even more exciting to see that Sarah and Mallory had become a detective and partners.
When the team got to the conference room, they took their seats. Mia stood at the front with Detective Night and Ashwood. About five other patrol officers were also there to assist with the case. All of those officers had found the bodies of the victims. One of the officers, Lauren Kyle, along with her partner, Officer Harper Norman, had discovered the first victim. Another team of Officers, Danial House and Mason Parker, found the second victim. An Officer without an assigned partner found the third victim.
As everyone settled down in their seats, conversations started. Some conversations were relevant to the case, others were trying to get to know each other. Detective Night and Ashwood glanced at Mia occasionally.
"Hey… um… Agent Winter?" One of the officers asked. She was short, light-skinned, with dark brown eyes, and brunette hair. She seemed nervous, even though she put on a confident demeanor.
"You can call me Mia," Mia said softly. "What were you asking?"
"I was going to ask if we could talk in private," the officer asked. As Mia listened to the officer speak, she recognized her voice. This was Officer Raven McKenna. She was the lone officer who had found the third victim but was also attacked by the Unsub.
"Of course," Mia said kindly.
Mia and Officer McKenna left the room. They talked in the hallway. It was relatively secluded.
"Is everything ok?" Mia asked.
"Yeah, um.." Officer McKenna paused. "It's just that… I don't know how much I can help with this case. It….. scares me. He was just so big and I….."
Mia nodded. She understood. "It's ok. It's not just your encounter that is the reason why you've been assigned to this case. From what I've read in your peer's files and reports, you're open-minded, intelligent, and adaptable."
Mia placed a gentle hand on the anxious officer's shoulder. Officer McKenna nodded. She appreciated the compassion that Mia was giving her.
Criminal Minds Criminal Minds
The BAU split up into different groups. Agent Morgan, Prentiss, and Hotchner left to interview a few possible witnesses. JJ, Agent Reid, and Rossi left to investigate the crime scene. Mia was left to review the victims with Garcia and compile a possible press interview. Mia was alone at the conference. Detectives Night and Ashwood had split up with the two other teams. The patrol officers had other duties.
Mia sat down at the desk closest to the whiteboard. She stared at the images other the murder victims.
Avery Lambert
Age: 24
Nationality: Asian
Occupation: Accountant
Conner Washington
Age: 17
Nationality: Hispanic
Occupation: None
Anthony Stevens
Age: 37
Nationality: African American
Occupation: Doctor
Mia dialed a number on her phone. She had sat in the deserted conference room for almost twenty minutes.
"Garcia here," said Garcia in a bubbly voice.
"Hey, Garcia," Mia said happily. "What can you tell me about the victims?"
"Well, Avery Lambert was well-liked, had a stable relationship with her boyfriend, and was never late to work. Overall, a pretty solid person. The second victim, Conner Washington was a troubled kid, he often got into fights with his peers at school, and his parents were pretty much absent from his life. He was raised primarily by his uncle. The third victim, Anthony Stevens was also well-liked. He has good reviews, almost no complaints against him, and a stable life." Garcia answered.
"Ok, cool." Mia thought about her next words. She stared at the whiteboard.
"So the rumors were true." said a deep and menacing voice from behind Mia. Mia whirled around in surprise, from both the fact that she hadn't heard anyone enter and the person standing in the doorway. "Welcome back Boot."
Mia stared at the man. He was Officer Noah Dawson. This man was Mia's former TO. The man smirked. They hadn't seen each other for a few years.
